Vista Hills Drive Restoration Board members have reviewed and met with vendors regarding the restoration of Vista Hills Drive. We are very aware of the damage that was recreated by the patchwork of irrigation repairs, drought, lack of shade and poor relationship between the well and irrigation system. The long term goal will be to replace trees and replace the grass long the length of the drive. However, we need to take into consideration the work that is scheduled this summer for the pending wall and potential drought conditions. We have done extensive work on the wells to work in conjunction with the renovated irrigation system. It has been brought to our attention that several neighbors are adjusting sprinkler heads to water their plants or lawn. At this time, the board is advising that homeowners are barred from making any changes to the irrigation system. Anyone who is caught making any adjustments, changes or altering the system will be fined. If a homeowner has an issue, please contact Southwest Management so that it can be brought to the attention of the irrigation team for correction. We have also removed trees that have died and have ground down stumps for future plantings. The short term solution for 2011 will be to continue to water the established grass to encourage growth. We will be replacing the dead grass in areas that will not be overworked during the construction of the wall. Our efforts will be concentrated towards the front of the drive between the mail box center to the southern loop of Newland. As the pending wall is completed, we will take into consideration what actions can be done against the long term goal. In accordance with weather, drought conditions and planting season, we will start the restoration. It has been acknowledged that the grass is not at its best, however the long term goals should supersede the current standing.
Pool Schedule: The pool hours are 6:00am to 10:00 pm. Restrooms will be open from 12:00pm to 10:00pm. Prior to 12:00pm you will need your gate key to open the doors. June Gardening Lawn: Since we are going to experience hot weather this year, it is best to prepare your lawn for dry conditions. Watering is key to a successful lawn and the grass should be watered 1 inch or approximately 15 to 20 minutes a minimum of every 3 to 4 days. It is best to water in the morning to prevent fungal disease. Alternate your mowing patterns. Zoysia and Bermuda should be cut to 1 to 1 ½ inches tall and St. Augustine should be cut to 2 to 3 inches tall. Annuals: All annuals for a successful season should have been installed already. Must remain cautious of drought conditions and water as needed. Soaker hose, mulch and rain gauge can be your best allies against drought. Over watered, soggy conditions can bring on pest and spider mites. Perennials: Finish all transplanting of perennials from pots to soil so that they can be established before the extreme heat commences. Be cautious of the root system and try not to disturb it. Do not move perennials that are already established in the ground. Water as needed and check potted perennials that may need daily watering. Fertilize as needed and take into consideration bulk of plant, rich green colors and amount of flowers. Roses: Roses can become stressed during the hot season. It is recommended to water 1 to 1 ½ inches every five days, use mulch to retain moisture and deadhead roses. Avoid planting and transplanting roses since the heat will kill the plant or set it back significantly. Fertilize as needed. This is a good time to prune back rose plants that are not repeat blooming plants. Use sharp pruning tools, leather gloves and long sleeves to avoid thorns. Shrubs: Avoid planting new shrubs during the next three months to avoid low success rate. Pull or trim off dead blooms to create space for new ones. You should water deeply and thoroughly once or twice a week. Finish any extensive pruning to spring flowering shrubs this month. Trees: Finish planting all container grown plants this month. July through September heat will make difficult for new trees to be successful. However, new palm plants do have a higher success rate when planted from June to August. If you do not complete your tree planting in June wait until October. Newly planted trees respond best to a hose placed a few inches from the trunk and have the water run at a trickle for about 30 to 45 minutes, once a week. Established trees should be watered 1 inch per week (best done when watering your lawn for about 15 to 20 minutes).
