mission statement
Benefits of Walking By Deirdre Rose Goggins
No pain, no gain, grab the dog and kids – let go!! Walking is a great way to start exercising with little cost. Just make sure you have good walking shoes and stretch out for 5 to10 minutes prior to starting out. Walking benefits include reduction in the risk of coronary heart disease, and stroke. It reduces high cholesterol, body fat and lowers blood pressure. Increases bone density, helps prevent osteoporosis and reduces the risk of non-insulin dependent diabetes. A large percentage of children in the age range of 11 to 16 years are walking half as much as children did a decade ago. Regularly participating in physical activities will increase longevity. It is suggested that you should walk 3 days at week for 30 minutes. Walking will help reduce stress, depression and anxiety. Including walking in your weekly activities will aid in sleeping better. Once you are comfortable in your walking routine, kick it up a notch with “fitness walking”. Walk as fast as you can while being able to hold a conversation. In other words walk at a pace that is brisk but does not prevent you from talking to a friend in a normal manner. Walking one mile (1.6km) will burn up to at least 100k calories of energy. Walking two miles (3.2km) a day, three times a week will help reduce weight by approximately one pound every three weeks. Also walking alters your body’s fat metabolism so that fat is burned up instead of sugars. Vista Oaks has wonderful tree lined street that add to your walking experience. It is a great way to meet neighbors and make new friends.

Tips and Tidbits
by Debbie Cole I always receive plants at Christmas. Sometimes I get Poinsettias, soil temperatures are still warm (which promotes root growth) and sometimes it is Christmas cactus. Last year I received a topiary the air temperatures are cool (which allows less stress on new trees.) Rosemary. These are a pain to keep in my office or house. Can I What better gift than a tree in honor of or in remembrance of a plant them out of doors? family member or friend? If an oak is desired, it is still best to select those varieties that are not susceptible to oak wilt. Live oaks and red Landscape Lady Says: Good question. Believe it or not, Poinsettias are outdoor plants-in oaks fall into this “iffy” category. Bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) is Mexico and other southern climates! They grow in vacant lots, along an excellent long lived oak which is a relatively speedy growth tree. roadsides, etc in many of the warm areas of Mexico (extra tidbit….. Landscape Lady planted one in December of 1989 in honor of a new plant was named after Joel Roberts Poinsett-first US Ambassador to family member. It was a scrawny little 15 gallon thing which drew Mexico who introduced the plant to the US in 1825.) Although the laughs and snickers from skeptics. That little sprout now towers over plant becomes a large woody shrub in Mexico, they are too tender a 2 story house and shades an entire western exposure. to tolerate central Texas winters. And they do not typically rebloom as the greenhouse grown plants do. Landscape Lady grew a crop for the Governor of Texas and the Governor’s Mansion; however, it was a HUGE pain involving more steps than you would care to know about! Christmas cactus do quite well indoors, are very, very thrifty with water (yes, you can ignore them for weeks), and they will rebloom each year. Just keep it indoors out of drafty areas and with lots of light (not full sun though.) Rosemary? Yes, yes, yes. Plant in very well drained soil and in full sun. They won’t remain Christmas tree shaped unless you prune them that way, but they will do well outdoors. Do NOT overwater. Sustainable Landscape Tip Making a few minor adjustments in an irrigation system can go a long way to saving water. One of the newer types of irrigation heads (known as MP rotators) save water and therefore money. These can be used in 4’ strip beds, irregularly shaped shrub beds, and turf. The heads can be used in an area requiring up to 30’ radius. The water delivery is exceptionally uniform and has a lower application rate that allows more water to fall INTO the soil rather than drifting off into the atmosphere. A special “double pop” allows the MP to self flush on start up and shut down without increasing spray head flow. This is valuable in our hard water environment. Planting Trees December is a great month to plant trees in central Texas. The

Lance’s Corner:To Do List • Continue to operate your irrigation system at least 1 cycle per month. • Wait until after the 2nd freeze (typically after January 1) to cut back perennials. • When you cut back perennials, be sure to cover the stems remaining with 3-4” of hardwood mulch. • Allow ornamental grasses to remain dormant (do not cut back) until winter if over. • Fertilize lawn with a balanced fertilizer to “put it to bed” for the winter. Balanced means all 3 numbers on the bag are fairly equal (13-13-13). • Add mulch to all bare soil in shrub beds. • Begin to think about how you want to “edit” your landscape in 2011. Spring comes before you know it! • Aerate turf prior to fertilization. • Consider changing out annual beds to perennial beds. Did You Know? Commercial landscapes have an average aesthetic lifespan of five to seven years, excluding native and specimen trees? The irrigation system components, depending on installation quality, have a similar lifetime.
