Projects In The Works At Vista Oaks:

Vista Hills Wall: The Vista Oaks Municipal Utility District is considering updating the landscape of Vista Oaks with a wall to replace some existing fencing. Phase 1 is looking at Vista Hills Blvd. and Phase 2 will consider Vista Isle. The MUD is performing the necessary due diligence to consider Phase 1 at this time. All details would be posted by the MUD in the upcoming months. The MUD would have 100% ownership of the wall and oversee all future maintenance. Electrical Outlets at the Pavilion: The board has elected to continue the installation of outlets for the use of Vista Oaks residents. We will be breaking ground on the outdoor

pavilion that will be built adjacent to the fire pit. The pavilion will be available to be booked for private parties and gatherings. Your reservation must be made through South West Management. Electrical power will be available, but must be requested at the time of your reservation. Playscape: A new playscape will be installed in the middle pasture between the East and West sections of Vista Oaks. The new playscape will be filled with slides, monkey bars and much more. Installation will commence in the upcoming months.

Pool Schedule Lifeguard service starts Saturday, May 28, 2011 at 12:00pm for the duration of the summer. The pool will be closed nightly at 10:00pm. Restrooms will be open from 12:00pm to 10:00pm. Prior to 12:00pm you

will need your gate key to open the doors. The State of Texas has required that “public pool safety” demonstrations be given by all lifeguard governed pools. Please check the upcoming newsletter for dates and times to attend.

Private Swim Lessons at Vista Oaks Residents are welcome to have private swim lessons in the Vista Oaks community pool. However your instruction must post a certificate of insurance with Southwest Management for the value of two million dollars (2,000,000.00) in order for the lessons to take place in the pool. The certificate must be on file a minimum of five days prior to commencement. The certificate must be posted regardless if the

instructor is a resident of Vista Oaks or not. If lessons are being taught in the pool without the certificate of insurance, the life guards and pool maintenance company has been instructed to terminate the lesson. This rule applies to pool at all hours including before the lifeguards come on duty. Please keep in mind Vista Oaks offers a 5% rebate back to the swimmer when lessons are booked through Lifeline Aquatics.

Question of the Month I seem to have a lot of winter freeze damage this year. Do I need to change the types of plants I use in my landscape?

Landscape Lady Says: Not necessarily. We have had an unusually cold winter this year. The best bet in any landscape is diversity. Plant all types of plants that work well in your landscape, just do not overplant any one material. That way if we have a serious disease issue, a winter freeze issue, or a drought issue, you will not lose large numbers of a single plant type. Stick with drought tolerant materials whenever you can. See the Plant of the Month suggestion!

Plant of the Month Jerusalem Sage is a super favorite of GTL. Its botanic name is Phlomis and it originates in the Mediterranean. It loves sun, is drought tolerant and not fussy about soil. It can take high summer temperatures and has survived beautifully the past 2 winters. It can reach 4’ in height; however, the winter keeps it smaller and can also be cut back easily. It has soft, fuzzy leaves and blooms bright yellow flowers in a circle around the stems (sort of like an upside down chandelier).

Lance’s Corner Landscaping Tips for April • Cool weather is finally over. Tender vegetable plants can be set out now. • Prune and trim and fertilize spring blooming trees and shrubs such as azaleas, bridal wreath, Indian hawthorns, redbuds, flowering peach AFTER THEY BLOOM! • Fertilize your lawn with an organic or biosolid fertilizer. NO weed and feed EVER. • Remove the last of the winter damage from trees, shrubs and ground covers. • Replace lawn areas where possible with ground cover (living) or non- living mulches.

Bluebonnets The show of bluebonnets this year is one that is quite nice in spite of the lack of much needed rain. Moisture is critical to the spread of the bluebonnets. At just the right time (seeds disperse in the wind) moisture must be available to swell and crack the seeds in order for germination to happen. Planting time for bluebonnet seeds is fall if you wish to do. If you collect them/purchase them late spring hold on to them until planting time in September-October.

Overcoming Barriers to Exercise Enjoyment, Time, & Know How By Sarah S. Jordan, MS

We live in a busy world where creating and sticking with a regular exercise routine can be challenging. Many obstacles can stand in the way of our routine, including the enjoyment factor, time, and exercise know-how. But with a little creativity, planning, and dedication, the rewards can be oh so sweet! (Not to mention life changing.) 1st Barrier - I don’t enjoy exercise. For some people, exercise is simply not enjoyable. Think about what you did as a child as “play.” Most likely, you enjoyed doing it. See if you can weave that into your workouts to make them more fun. Or make it social by exercising with a workout buddy or in a group setting. Whenever I have people tell me that they just don’t find exercise enjoyable, I work hard to find a mode of exercise that they do enjoy in order to get them started. Once they are moving more, eating smarter, and feel their hard work and activity paying off, it is much easier to find other modes of exercise to challenge them and help them see results. And I love watching exercise become fun for them and the thing that they look forward to in their day!

2nd Barrier - I just can’t find the time. If there is one thing that I have learned about my workouts since becoming a mother, it is that they will not happen if I wait for the time to open up in my day. I have to create, devote, and stick to the time I make for them. Here are some tips for making more time for exercise: • ANY exercise is better than none. Even if you just have 15 minutes, take it. Your body and mind will be glad you did, and 15 minutes a day can add up to great things over time! • Put exercise on your calendar and treat it like you would a mandatory meeting. • Find a reliable workout partner. This not only makes workouts more fun, but it holds you accountable to show up. • Invest in a personal trainer. They can create an individualized workout plan that fits your lifestyle and goals, and equip you with an incredible amount of education on healthy living. • Make use of the early hours. Getting workouts in before the busy (Continued on Page 6)

day kicks off ensures that they happen, and the entire day will be so much better because of it! • Make it a family tradition. What a cool thing to expose our kids to - families moving together! • Find what works for YOU. For some people, joining a gym is the most convenient option. If that is not realistic for you, find other activities, classes, and opportunities in your area. • Don’t give up. If you are not reaching your goals, determine what is not working and create a roadmap to resolve it. Remember that fitness is a lifestyle and it goes through ups and downs, but always benefits us if we persevere. The other important thing is to make the time we do have count in the biggest ways possible. If we have just thirty minutes three days a week to exercise, it is essential that we step up the intensity of those workouts to get the most we can for our time. If duration is short, we need to increase intensity. Add intervals and hills to your routine, or find a fitness class or DVD that offers a combination of cardio and strength training. 3rd Barrier - I don’t know how to exercise. In today’s world, exercise videos and how-to’s are literally at our fingertips online. We also have options for FitTV, DVDs, and opportunities at gyms, studios, and parks around town. Finding what works for your schedule and lifestyle is essential, so test a few things out before you commit. Here are some options for gaining exercise know-how: • Talk to your doctor to get recommendations and approval when starting an exercise program. • Use credible online resources. One that I use often is the “ACE Get Fit ™” section at www.acefitness.org. • Put it in the hands of a professional and take out the guesswork by hiring an experienced personal trainer, or get involved in some group fitness classes. • If you have a friend that is very fit and knows a lot about exercise, ask him/her if you can join them for their next exercise session. We all know that it is not easy to make time to exercise. But we have the power to make choices that can shape our future based on how much we move now. Sometimes all it takes is one step in the right direction.
