Welcome to the Ballantine’s 40 Year Old Visual Identity Guidelines. This is your copy of the guidelines and all the necessary information relating to the visual world of the Ballantine’s 40 Year Old blend. The guidelines should be strictly adhered to ensuring the quality of the brand is never compromised. Forty Y ear Old Blend LIMITED BOTTLE RELEASE

The Ballantine’s 40 Year Old primary brand marque is the preferred version, it contains all of the elements from the packaging itself communicating the same key values. This version should be used whenever space permits and only ever appears over a plain background. The brand marque exists in several forms for differing applications which are shown in the following examples. The position and proportion of the elements as demonstrated must be maintained at all times.

The contained primary brand marque appears within its own area of background colour which is equal to but must never exceed the size of exclusion area as detailed on pages 12 - 13. All variations of the contained brand marques are for use in instances where the background to the layout may contain pattern or image.

The secondary brand marque appears without the written age and exclusivity statements. It should be used when the available space cannot accommodate the primary brand marque, it should never appear forced into a layout and only appears on a plain background. The exclusion zone is always applicable.

The metallic rendition of the contained brand marque is preferred over the non-metallic version and should be used whenever the available printing colours allow. It should only be used when the metallic colour and the spot matt varnish are both available as this is a considered combination that reinforces the premium nature of the marque.

The non-metallic rendition of the contained brand marque is to be used in instances where metallic ink and matt varnish are not available, the background colour is reproduced as a linear vignette to simulate a metallic finish.

On the non-metallic rendition of the contained brand marque a linear vignette is used to simulate a metallic finish. The vignette is printed in 2 colours with a solid light base colour PMS 9043C and a darker vignetting colour PMS 7530C overprinting. The angle and tint values of the vignette should always reproduced as shown above.

The light metallic gold version of the brand marque which is the closest version to the bottle can be used when appropriate. This version of the brand marque can be used when special emphasis on the premium nature of the brand is required.

Where the primary brand marque is used on a dark backgound the colours above are recommended. These maintain the desired balance and contrast between the elements of the brand marque and background which is important in maintaining the look and feel of the marque and evokes the feeling of the bottle materials.

To ensure clarity and visibility of the brand marque it is surrounded by an area which is entirely clear of typography and any other graphic devices or pattern, this applies to all versions of the marque. The exclusion area is measured by the height of the letter ‘n’ from the Ballantine's script as shown (above). The diagram also demonstrates the position and proportion of the elements to one another.

There is no maximum size of reproduction for any versions of the brand marque but all versions have a minimum size in order to ensure clarity and visibility at all times. The minimum size of 45mm shown above is subject to the type of reproduction and may need to be increased for lower quality methods of reproduction.

Typography is key to the brand personality, Trajan is our primary Branding typeface that appears on the product packaging. Trajan can be used as a headline font in other communication materials in either regular or bold weights with a larger initial cap as shown in the example.

These guidelines are an example of the communication typeface usage. Chapter headings and page titles are Univers 57 Condensed evolved into a device with horizontal keylines. The colour used for all typographic elements is Pantone® Cool Gray 9C. The page uses the Ballantine’s crest as a watermark background in Pantone® Warm Gray 2C.

The Ballantine’s 40 Year Old printed colour palette reflects the materials and finishes of the product itself. Light cream is the foundation colour for backgrounds, which represents the colour of a light cream paperstock, it can be printed as the colour specified above. Brown can be used as a background to evoke the feel of the bottle and the dark brown glass. Dark wood and gold are accent colours.
