Conversational English, Conversational Spanish and Citizenship Classes

Enhance your English and/or Spanish as you prepare for a new job or change jobs. Prepare for your U.S. Citizenship Test. Classes are Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at CHBC. Enrollment is free; material costs may apply. If you would like to help serve in this Ministry, and are a member of CHBC, please contact Connie Crew at 634-3854.

Concert of Prayer We begin each year at Capitol Hill with a commitment to prayer and seeking the Lord in a special service called “A Concert of Prayer.” Convinced that what Jesus said in John 15 is true, “Apart from me you can do nothing,” we understand that our own plans and goals for 2017 are in vain unless the Lord is pleased to equip and enable us to achieve them. Our time of prayer together is an acknowledgement that Christ is Lord and we are not. And even more so, going to God in prayer together as His church is always a sweet time of communion with Him. Join us on January 8 at 5:00 p.m. as we start the year off right in a Concert of Prayer. 5

General Information Thank you from Dawna Pybas (Lyle and Willa Ruth Garlow’s daughter) Capitol Hill Baptist Church—thank you so much for the lovely meal you provided for our family on the day of Daddy’s remembrance service. Please express our thanks to all the folks who prepared and served the meal. It helped make a difficult day a little easier. Capitol Hill Baptist Church is a special place with loving members. Thank you! Dawna Pybas

A Note from Pastor Scott Associate Pastor of Worship and Older Adults

Personal Preferences “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests but also for the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3-4 Have you noticed how our personal preferences sometimes get in the way of truly seeing what God is doing? Sometimes we judge people and miss the opportunity to be the Lord’s instrument of transformation. We can easily withdraw from ministry in the church if we think it is not being done the way we would do it. I recently read an article by Mike Harland, the Director of Lifeway Worship that challenges one aspect of personal preference. It follows in its entirety:

What to Do When You Don’t Like the Songs I found myself thinking this the other day in worship – I really don’t like this song and wish we wouldn’t sing it. It probably happens to people in our churches more than we think. We live in a culture where we are encouraged to “rate and review” everything. And we have been conditioned to believe our opinion matters! This is certainly true in our congregational song choices. What should we do when we don’t like the songs? Sit in the foyer until the music is over? There has to be something better. Try this… 1. Sing anyway. You don’t have to fold your arms and put a scowl on your face to visibly express your disapproval. You can actually sing anyway. Not because you love the song – because you love Jesus. It is a choice you can make. 2. Focus on the truth of the lyric. Now, if the lyric is expressing something that is not true to God’s Word, you have reason to not like the song and may need to take more drastic steps. But, generally speaking, there is something true about every song, even the ones you don’t like. Focus your attention on that truth, not on the melody that is driving you crazy. Pray. While the song is being sung, spend your energy praying that God will speak and move in His people instead of dwelling on sensibilities that feel offended by a song you don’t like. And, pray each week for the people that are selecting the songs you are singing in church; pray they will have wisdom and discernment as they make choices in music. 8

3. Planning music for worship for a diverse congregation is a difficult thing to do – your leaders need your prayer support. 4. Resist feeling marginalized. The enemy comes to the offended heart and begins to whisper, “This church doesn’t love you. They don’t care about you. If they did, they wouldn’t sing stuff like this. You don’t matter to them.” And none of that is true. You can choose your attitude about the songs your church sings. A great example of this was from someone in my church years ago who expressed this to me one day – “I don’t like the songs we are singing. But, I love how God is using the music in our church to minister to these young families. You’re doing a great job! I thank God for you!” That’s what maturity looks like. 5. Be Grateful. If you will choose to, look around your church and see all that God is doing… and be thankful. Or, you can decide to focus all of your attention on what isn’t the way you prefer. Are your Sunday lunches more like a critic’s review of the music? Or the sermon? Why not turn them into testimonies of God’s goodness and a celebration of all He is doing in your church and family? I especially encourage parents to be very careful critiquing church with their children and teenagers. You could be unintentionally sowing seeds that will bring heartache later. Try these suggestions. You might discover a worship experience that doesn’t rest on the song list each week. Jesus is longing for you to celebrate His goodness – not just spend your time hating the songs. This article was originally published at WorshipLife.com, a website designed to help all those involved in Worship Ministry to live out God’s greatest commandment—Love the Lord your God with all your HEART, all your SOUL, and all your MIND

I pray Mr. Harland’s counsel will impact us at each personal preference we exercise that would sacrifice our growing knowledge of God or hinder His great work amongst us!

Older Adult Ministry Increase and Abound in Love All Older Adults, including associate members that are teaching in other departments and those participating in Median Adult Sunday School classes, are welcome to all Older Adult events.

January Activities Join us for our monthly luncheon on Monday, January 23rd. We will begin with games at 10:00 a.m. with lunch being served at 11:30 a.m.

In the December edition of Branches we discussed what it means to be hospitable toward one another...without complaint! In this series we are identifying the one anothers of the Bible as an expression of our neediness in the Body of Christ. In 1 Thessalonians 3:12 it states, “And may the Lord cause you to increase and abound in love for one another, and for all people, just as we also do for you.” Verse 13 gives the reason, “So that He may establish your hearts without blame in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints.”

We have just come out of the Christmas season, a time when it seems easier to express love. What would it look like if what we just experienced would increase and abound in this new year?! I find my prayers for this in our church sounding much like Paul to the Philippians, “And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ; having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” Philippians 1:9-11

STUDENT MINISTRY Winter Retreat Ironically, one thing that some unbelievers and Christians have in common is the misconception that Christianity is all about duty. The duty to read your Bible. The duty to go to church. The duty to put money in the offering plate. The duty to die to self. The duty to evangelize friends. And make no mistake about it, those things are good and necessary things. But those things are meaningless apart from a heartfelt delight in God. On the outside, the Pharisees accomplished all of their religious duties. But inside they were whitewashed tombs. They did not love God, their hearts did not adore him. They did not delight in Him. During this Winter Retreat, we want to point our hearts to Christ that we might delight in Him! Date: February 3 -4, 2017 Theme: "Taste and See: Delighting in God through the Psalms" Location: Falls Creek, FBC Chickasha Cabin Speaker: Michael White, pastor of Freedom Church, Lincolnton, NC Schedule: Meet at CHBC at 6:00 pm on Friday; Return at 10:00 pm on Saturday Cost: $40 due 1/22/17; Bring $ for a fast food dinner on Friday
