OASIS Team Leaders – Be a part of the leadership team for your Congregational Community (CC). This is preferably for someone who has been at 2PC for a while and is familiar with opportunities and leadership structure.

Adult Education

Dee Walker / Rocky Anthony at (901) 454-0034 Adult Congregational Community Teacher – A committee selects and works with members who express the desire to teach a class at Second. This committee will contact you as the needs arise. You can choose to teach on a regular basis or as a substitute. MidWeek Teacher – Same process as for CC teachers, but classes are on Wednesday nights during our Fall and Spring MidWeek sessions.

Boy Scouts

Contact Rocky Anthony at (901) 454-0034 Boy Scout Assistant – Work with the leaders of Boy Scout Troops 55 or 86, which are sponsored by Second, or Pack 55 or Venture Crew 2. Help the Scout masters with special events, campouts or special meetings.

Children

Contact Sandy Hazelwood or Dylan Franklin at (901) 454-0034 Disciple 6th graders – Work with staff members during disciple time for sixth graders on Wednesday nights from 6:30 – 7:30. This includes skits, planned activities, games, etc. Extended Session Leader – Volunteer weekly or monthly at either at 8:15 am or 11:00 am worship services to help with children 3 – 5 years old. Greeter – Welcome children and parents at the doors of the children’s Sunday school building D before Sunday school begins and help direct them to classes. This takes about 20 minutes each Sunday morning beginning at 9:30 am. Kids Konnection Leader – Teach a group of first through sixth graders on Wednesday nights from 6:15 – 7:30. Contact Dylan Franklin. Teacher for Nursery Sixth grade – Team teach the age group of your choice with at least three other adults Sunday mornings, 9:45 – 10:40.

Nursery Volunteer – Help in the nursery with the babies on Sunday mornings from 8:15 – 9:30 or 11:00 – 12:15 pm. You may rotate, choosing to work only one Sunday a month or every week. Secretary for the Sunday School Classes – Take attendance, maintain records, send cards to children and greet parents and children on Sunday mornings from 9:40 – 9:55 am. Facilitator for Rainbows For All God’s Children – Facilitate a group of children, ages 4 years – 6th grade, who have separated or divorced parents and at least one parent is attending Divorce Recovery. This is held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 8:30 in conjunction with MidWeek. Special Friends Sunday School Teacher – Lead or help other leaders work with and befriend special needs children and adults of various ages on Sunday mornings, 9:30 – 11:30 or 11 – 12 noon. Thursday Morning Nursery Helper – Teach and guide children whose mothers attend A Mother’s Heart Bible Study on Thursday mornings from 9 – 11:30.

Communications

Web – Volunteers are needed to help format and/or develop content for the 2pc.org website and various social media outlets. Photographers – Volunteers will take photographs of various events in the life of Second Presbyterian Church.

Congregational Care

Contact Gail Stevens at (901) 454-0034 Cookie Brigade Baker – Bake cookies once a month for the visitation ministry to distribute to our homebound members. Crown Ministries Financial Facilitator – Attend the Crown Ministries Financial class for one session to be mentored and trained by a facilitator and then teach a session on Biblical financial principles and good stewardship. This is offered in the fall and spring sessions of MidWeek. Visitor to New Babies – Visit a new mother and deliver a baby bag with a Bible, bulletin, nursery information and a rose from the Sanctuary. Flexible hours, but visits are usually made on Sunday afternoons.

Holiday Opportunities

Contact Mike Gatliff at (901) 454-0034 AMEN Holiday Donation – We collect coats, hats, gloves and socks for the men who stay at the Calvary Rescue Mission and Memphis Union Mission. These items may be dropped off during AMEN in December.

Hospitality / Food

Contact Kim Blankenship at (901) 454-0034 Bakers & Cooks Team – When special events are held, many volunteers are needed to help with the baking and cooking. These occur throughout the year. Team members will receive an email when they are needed and participate as their schedules allow.

Hospitality / Greeters

Contact Kim Blankenship at (901) 454-0034 Greeters – Second Presbyterian is a warm and friendly church, and we need volunteers to help greet and welcome members and guests. Greeters are needed at all worship services on Sunday mornings and evenings, MidWeek sessions, and special events and services.

Special Event Team – When conferences, lunches or Holy Week services are held, many volunteers are needed to help with the logistics. These occur throughout the year, usually on weekends, but Holy Week includes weekdays. Team members will receive an email when they are needed and participate as their schedules allow. Ticket-Sellers – Help support our events by selling tickets when appropriate. This includes selling tickets for MidWeek dinners starting at 5:30 on Wednesday nights. Overnight Guest Hosts – Second Presbyterian often provides lodging for guests like missionaries, guest speakers, visiting pastors and college students for a night or two. Please let us know if you’d be willing to share your home.

Internationals

Story Hour – Read to children in the library and make crafts following the theme of the day.

Substitute Pianist – Play for choir rehearsals and services in the absence of regular pianist. Westminster Singer – Sing for Sunday morning 8:15 service and special occasions.

Music, Children

Children’s Choir Director – Direct choir, work in selecting music and programs for choir, help shape the next generation of worship leaders. Choir Helper – Assist the choir director with attendance and supplying physical needs such as folders and instruments, some phone calling. Piano Accompanist or Substitute Accompanist – Play piano for choir rehearsals and performances. Outreach

Contact Jon Becker at (901) 454-0034 Welcome/Information Center Assistant – Serve at the Welcome Center on Sunday mornings after the 8:15 service and before and after the 11:00 service by greeting guests and visitors and providing information. Testimony – Give personal testimony of faith in Christ during a Sunday evening worship service. Visitor Follow-Up – Phone church visitors to welcome them and invite them back and provide information about Second. Church Phones – Answer phone calls during the Sunday morning services to provide information and take requests for prayer, information or help.

Prison Ministry

Contact Rocky Anthony at (901) 454-0034 Teaching Women in the Pre-Release Program at the State Correctional Center. Teach one-hour class on forgiveness one or two times a week. Training and curriculum are provided. You will have a co-teacher.

Recreation

Contact Robert O’Kelley at (901) 454-0034 Coach Youth Sports – Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, and Flag Football Schedule: Baseball – April through June (including practices) Soccer – August through November (second Saturday of the month); Basketball – November through February, Flag Football – April through June. Picnic Volunteer – Need volunteers to assist with the rides and grills. FCA Camp* – Need volunteers to bring snacks, serve meals, and lead small groups.

Senior Adults

Contact Gail Stevens at (901) 454-0034 Devotional Leader for Nursing Homes – Our nursing home ministry visits many different nursing homes and assisted living homes offering brief devotionals at their chapel services. Transportation – Provide transportation via church bus or car for seniors to and from church on Sunday mornings. Visitor to Shut-Ins – Visit those who are in the hospital, nursing home, or are homebound and share encouragement with them.

Serving

Chaperones – Be chaperones for the children of our Single Parent Ministry attendees. Construction Crews – Consider participating in construction projects for 2PC ministry initiatives. Emergency Response Team – Volunteers who make themselves available to serve as the hands and feet of Christ in the aftermath hurricanes, tornados or other natural disasters.

Women

Contact Women in Ministry at (901) 454-0034 Bloom Mentors – Our small group mentoring program for women at Second is always in need of new mentors (ages 40 plus) to lead younger women (ages 22 – 40). One by One Mentors – Mentor an under-resourced new or expectant mom by teaching parenting skills through the critical period of development – prenatal through three years; or become a prayer partner for a mentor. Terrific Tuesday Host or Set-Up – Help set up for the luncheon or host a table, greet people, pour coffee, tea and make everyone feel welcomed. Women of the Church Circles – Join a monthly circle that specifically does service work as part of its responsibilities. 2nd Commitment Tuesday – Lend a hand at the church once a month to complete projects to benefit various needs in the church and community. Court Manor Visitor – Visit patients at the nursing home four times a year and help brighten their day by giving a devotional, singing, serving cake, and offering a smile! *Indicates Summer opportunities 10

World Missions

Contact Ron Sadlow at (901) 454-0034 Bible League Thrift Store – Arrange, price and sell items at the Bible League Thrift Store. All proceeds go to Bibles for China. Short-Term Mission Trip Volunteer – Serve as a short-term missionary on a variety of different missions trip opportunities. (medical, non-medical, dental) Transportation – Provide the use of a car or transportation to a visiting missionary during their stay in Memphis. World Missions Conference – Serve as an assistant during the World Missions Conference. World Missions Prayer Partner or Correspondent – Pray regularly or correspond with a specific missionary and family supported by 2PC.

Bethany Christian Services

Administrative Help – Volunteer in the office once a week or twice a month, etc. This involves helping with phones, special mailings, organizing, etc. Office is open from 8 am – 5 pm, Monday-Friday. Host/Hostesses – Volunteer for any special event or fundraiser. This involves volunteering at the event itself or helping with the set up.

Christ Community Health Services Contact (901) 260-8500

Program Support Liaison – Develop a mentoring relationship with inner-city youth who live in challenging environments and provide support as they strive to live out the choices made in the program. Our programs teach abstinence as God’s way to live life as a single person and include interactive learning sessions as well as activities regarding life skills. Contact Angelica at (901) 260-8553.

Church Health Center

Sports Court Assistant – Provide assistance to the Exercise & Movement (E&M) staff on the Sports Court. Assistance is needed Monday through Saturday, especially in the mornings and evenings. A minimum commitment of two hours per volunteering session is required. Lay Exercise Assistant – Provide assistance to the E & M staff in group classes. One hour per class – volunteers are needed each day of the week. A commitment to participate for one calendar year is required.

Volunteer Leaders – Childcare volunteers are needed to help teach our children on Tuesday evenings. Clothes closet volunteers are needed to sort donations to our clothes closet.

Community Health Volunteer Opportunities

Group Bible Study Leader – We need female volunteers interested in leading discussion groups and Bible Studies for women or children during Growth Group and other scheduled meetings. Growth Group meets every Tuesday from 5:45-8:30. A meal is provided. Intensive Outpatient and Life-Skills Class Volunteer – We need female volunteers to help teach and lead various classes. The materials used in the classes are provided. Job Advocate – We need employers willing to provide entry level job opportunities for our women when they reach a certain stage of their recovery program. Mentor – We have an ongoing need for Christian women volunteers to mentor the women in our program. This involves attending four training sessions held quarterly and a weekly mentors meeting Wednesdays from 1:00-2:30 p.m. Other time commitment is dictated by the mentor and her schedule. Prayer Committee – Prayer requests are sent by email to this committee. Special Events and Refreshment Provider – Volunteers are needed to help plan parties and other special events for the women and children. Also, volunteers are needed to bring a meal periodically for the women, children, and volunteers who attend Growth Group on Tuesday evenings and for other scheduled events. Transportation – We have a great need for women to provide transportation to appointments for the women who don’t have cars. Your name will be placed on our ride committee list and emails listing ride needs are distributed. If a ride need fits your schedule, you respond to that need.

Life Choices, Inc.

Contact Sue Parker at (901) 388-1172 Development Support or Helpline Volunteer – Receive the help-phone line into your home in order to assist individuals who call asking for help. Training is required and is given by Life Choices. Volunteer Nurse – Serve under the direction of Life Choices’ Director of Clinic Services providing ultrasound services and medical consultation. Training is required and is given by Life Choices. Client Advocate – Meet and greet clients who come to Life Choices for pregnancy tests as well as facilitate a thirty minute intake assessment session. Training is required and is given by Life Choices.

Berclair Elementary

Serve Special events – Help serve the teachers and students at our adopted school by participating in special luncheons, teacher appreciation week, TCAP week, and career week. Please call for dates. Saturday Clean-Up – Each Spring, all of 2PC is invited to help clean the grounds of our adopted school. Bring your tools, trash bags and gloves. We work from 8:30 am – noon and then stay for a cookout with fellow church members and the Berclair faculty and parents. Scheduled for April 10. Tutor – Tutor elementary age children. K – 6th grade students at our adopted school Berclair Elementary need our help with reading and simple math work. Hours are flexible between 8:15 am and 3:15 pm. You must complete a Memphis City School registration prior to involvement.

Child Evangelism Fellowship

Last year, the after school club at Berclair Elementary was held on Wednesdays. Volunteers are needed to help hand out name tags and refreshments, listen to kids recite Bible verses, sit with children during Bible time, and help with crowd control at dismissal. Volunteers must attend orientation training.

Education Volunteer Opportunities

Prayer Vision – This is our monthly prayer letter sent to over 1,200 addresses. Volunteers are needed for a morning or afternoon to fold letters, stuff envelopes, and put on labels. Generally, this project is done the last week of each month at our CEF office, 2091 Lee Place, Memphis 38104. *Summer Missions 2010 – Teens can volunteer to teach 5-Day Clubs in the inner city. One week of training is required plus a minimum of two weeks of volunteering in the 5-Day Clubs. *Camp Good News 2010 – Teens can volunteer as kitchen and sport activity staff, but they must be 15 – 17 years old. College students can volunteer as counselors and team leaders. Training and orientation is required. This requires a one week commitment the following weeks: June 20 – 26, June 27 – July 3, July 4 – 10.

Fall Break Mission Trip Volunteer – Location: Pineville, Kentucky, Dates: October 15 – 18, 2009. Take approximately 65 college students and adults to Pineville, KY to conduct general carpentry repair to homes of disadvantaged persons working through the Bell-Whitley Community Agency. We especially need adults with carpentry skills to supervise teams of college students. Spring Break Mission Trip Volunteer – Location: TBD, Dates: March 6 – 13, 2010 Take approximately 150 college students and adults to conduct general carpentry work in the mission field. Last several trips were to Bay St. Louis, MS working with Lagniappe Presbyterian Church. We especially need adults with carpentry skills to supervise teams of college students.

The Neighborhood School Volunteer Leaders – Volunteers are needed as prayer partners who are assigned to individual students, as mentors/tutors to read to children, as room sponsors, and to serve in art, music and choir classes.

Volunteer Leaders – Volunteers are needed to provide administrative help in maintaining our database and networking to assist staff in connecting with local businesses concerning employment opportunities. GED Tutors – Volunteer tutors work closely with students to help them prepare for the GED exam. Tutors are needed in all subject areas: grammar, writing, math, science and history. Time and days vary. Suggested one-hour minimum twice a week. Contact Rosalind Hardy 543-8525 or [email protected]. Computer Volunteer – Volunteers are needed to provide our students with the skills to navigate the computer in their job search efforts. We also need volunteers as computer lab assistants to provide individual help to Jobs for Life participants/ graduates completing online applications or editing resumes. Contact Andrew Vincent or Ann Brainerd at (901) 543-8525. Prayer Partners – Commit to praying for the programs, staff, and students of Advance Memphis on a regular basis. Leadership – Volunteers are needed as small group leaders during the Jobs for Life Class to serve as speakers in sharing knowledge related to finances, employment, workplace ethics, and more. Snacks and Drinks Provider – “Club” is one of our primary programs for sharing the Gospel with our students. High School Club is Mondays at 7 pm, Middle School Club meets Thursdays at 6 pm, and Elementary Club is Fridays at 3:30 p.m. Pathways Tutoring – Pathways is our educational mentoring program and is the most relationally involved of all our programs. Tutoring lasts one hour a week. We have hours available between 3 and 6 pm, Monday through Thursday, unless an alternate time can be established. Ready Readers – Ready Readers takes place on the campus of local elementary schools during school hours. Here, adults are paired with students who are below proficient in skills such as reading and math. Each volunteer is asked to spend at least thirty minutes to an hour, once a week, with the children. This is an ideal program for moms with children in school during the day or anyone working with a lunch break to spare. We have hours available between 9 am and 2 pm, Monday through Thursday. StreetSmarts – Volunteers are needed to assist with crowd control, homework, and build relationships with the students. This commitment can be onece a week, once a month, or as you can come. Your youth group may bring a team of students and adult leaders to participate in a week of repairing homes in the name of Christ in Binghampton. We also now host six weeks of summer mission camps in Orange Mound. Spring Break Camp – A church or an organization could put together a team of college students to participate in a week-long mission trip doing home repairs in Binghampton. Fall Mission Projects – Various groups from your church may sign up to participate in a short mini-camp, serving our neighborhood. Adopt a week/weekend – A church or an organization may “adopt” a week or weekend of camp. That group will recruit volunteers and send them to SOS at various times throughout the week/weekend to help with things like: preparing meals, cleaning, praying, doing laundry for our summer staff, delivering popsicles to our work teams and helping with our picnic. Adopt a homeowner – A family or Sunday school class may “adopt” a homeowner. We will help connect people in your church with a family in the neighborhood. The church members may pray for them, visit them, help them with things around the house, give them gifts on holidays, birthdays, etc. Spring Clean – Volunteers from local churches or organizations may sign up to help us get ready to host over 1,400 campers for the summer. Host Families* – Every summer we hire 40 college-aged Christian men and women to serve as camp counselors. A host family serves as a “home away from home” for our college students who have come from all over to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus in word and deed through SOS camps. Construction Leadership – The main thrust of our ministry is home repair. We are always looking for individuals who are skilled in the area of construction to help us at various times when we have camps in session.
