Proverbs (and many other verses regarding speech) urges caution in speech much more than freedom. "Silence leaves all other options open." - Det Bowers, Jr.

Words reflect character--unwise words destroy credibility. (Proverbs 15:2) II. Helpful Words A. Words can heal and restore. (Proverbs 12:18) B. Words establish your reputation. (Proverbs 12:9a) C. Wisdom makes truth acceptable/palatable. (Proverbs 15:2a) 1. Sandwich truth between words that affirm and encourage 2. Consider the personalities involved. III. The Tongue Can Be Tamed. A. Proverbs 15:2a 1. Develop Wisdom. 2. Use wisdom to filter your speech. 3. Use patience--wait for the right timing. B. Proverbs 21:23 1. Think carefully about how you hurt yourself--guard your mouth and you guard your soul. IV. Help and Hope A. Desire and pray to use words to bless. 1. Quit using words for freedom (of expression), to exert power, to relieve emotion (self expression/relief of emotion are about you). B. Before you share an opinion, ask yourself: 1. Am I an authority here or just an opinionated spectator? 2. Have I been asked? 3. Is there immediate danger? (i.e. Do I need to say this now?) C. Watch people who do this well. Imitate or ask them how.
