For most teens, high school is an exciting time for those sweet, first tastes of independence: first dates, first cars, first paychecks. As low-stakes as some of these milestones may seem, there’s one area that deserves some extra attention in every family: per-

sonal finance. Today’s teens are spending $260 billion a year in the U.S., yet only 17 states require completion of at least one financial literacy course for high school graduation. Consider the fact that 3.3 million high school students are expected to graduate in 2017, and what we have is too many young adults head-

Taking part in this program had a profound impact on Kha, along with over 725,000 other Club teens who have completed Money Matters. Bite back against mosquitoes this season with these prevention tips Brandpoint

From annoying itchy welts to serious conditions like Malaria and West Nile virus, mosquitoes have been making humans miserable and sick for thousands of years. And now, there’s Zika - a mosquitospread virus that may be linked to serious birth defects. In fact, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the diseases mosquitoes spread make them the deadliest animal on the planet. The arrival of warm weather means it’s time to step up your mosquito prevention and protection efforts in order to help protect your family. The National Pest Management

Association offers some information that can help: • The type of mosquito that transmits Zika bites during the daytime hours. Most other types of mosquitoes bite during dusk and dawn. • Within the U.S., mosquitoes have been known to spread West Nile virus, Chikungunya, and encephalitis-causing viruses in humans, and heartworms in dogs. • Mosquitoes spread disease when they bite one person, fly to another and bite again, spreading the infection. What many people don’t realize is that the saliva from the mosquito’s bite causes the red, itchy irritation that we all know so well. The NPMA recommends

some ways you can help reduce your exposure to mosquitoes: • Eliminate breeding areas - Mosquitoes need only about a half-inch of standing water in which to lay their eggs. Get rid of any stagnant water around your home, such as flower pots, bird baths, kiddie pools and standing water in low areas of your yard. • Use repellent - Whenever you spend time outside, protect your skin from mosquito bites by applying an insect repellent that contains at least 20 percent DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon-eucalyptus. Also, consider wearing long pants, long-sleeved shirts and closed-toe shoes. • Be aware of the time of day - Mosquitoes are most

active around dawn and dusk, although the variety that transmits Zika prefers to bite during the day. Minimize outside activity during peak biting hours, or, if you must be outside, wear long sleeves, pants and repellent to thwart mosquitoes. • Watch what you wear - Dark colors, floral prints and sweet-smelling perfumes or colognes can attract mosquitoes to you. Wear light colors and forego perfume when spending time outside. • Protect your house Screens help keep mosquitoes out of your house. Be sure all windows and doors are outfitted with screens, and that all are in good shape. Repair tears to keep mosquitoes from getting inside.

Tips FROM PAGE 4

earning money or receiving an allowance, you should open a savings account. Parents and teens can decide together how much of the earnings should be set aside for savings. “Whenever you earn or receive money, put at least 10 percent of it into a savings account,” Kha says. “I personally set aside 25 percent of my income from my part-time job to help me save up for big-ticket purchases, such as concert tickets and cool electronics, as well as college tuition.” NEEDS VS. WANTS

When something fun comes up at the last minute it’s hard to say no, and even harder to face the idea of missing out. The best thing teens can do is prepare for

situations that lead to impulse purchases. Start by making a list of needs and wants. Each month, plan for the things you need, and figure out how much is left over for the fun stuff. If you know ahead of time that your car insurance is coming due, you will be less likely to spend all your money on concert tickets. KEEP TRACK OF SPENDING

Now that you’re aware of how much you need for necessities and what’s left over for the fun stuff, it’s time to start keeping track of everything you spend. It doesn’t matter if you use cash or a debit card, and it doesn’t matter if you keep track with an app or a small notebook. Just be sure to log every single purchase. Even small things, including the taco from the food truck or trail mix from the vending machine, should be entered into the log. Being

mindful of every dollar you spend will help you understand your spending habits - and help you find ways to reduce your spending and save even more. “You can avoid impulsive, emotional or irrational decisions if you recognize them in advance,” Kha says. BUILD GOOD CREDIT

Money decisions you make even now as a teenager will make a difference later. Good credit is essential to getting a good rate on a car loan or leasing an apartment later on. That credit score is an indication to future lenders that you are responsible and will pay on time. To build good credit, always pay your bills on time and carefully manage your checking account. If you choose to get a credit card, never charge more than you can afford to repay in full each month. NOTES » PAGE 14

TECHNOLOGY

Five easy ways to reduce digital eyestrain Brandpoint

Te ch nolog y c a n b e beautiful thing. It has expanded our worlds and our minds, connecting people in a way they’ve never been before. But if you’re regularly using mobile devices, it’s possible you’re one of 70 percent of U.S. adults who suffer from digital eyestrain. And if you’re using technology before bed, you’re probably suffering from the sleep- and heath-alter ing ef fects of blue light. Blue light, which helps us see digital screens clearly in the day time, is emitted from things you use every day: cell phones, tablets, laptop and desktop computers, and even TVs and digital billboards. And consistent exposure can cause disruptions in your circadian rhythm and sleep patterns, especially if you’re exposed to blue light before bedtime. The poor sleep quality caused by these disruptions has been associated with a myriad of health issues, from diabetes to heart disease. Our technolog y consumption isn’t expected to decline anytime soon, but we still need our eyes to function properly to experience and interact with the world. Below are some tips that can help you maintain your health while using modern technology: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TOOLS.

For those who wear glasses or any kind of vision correction solution, Carl Zeiss Vision created an entire portfolio of products to help users maintain optimal eye health while interacting with our digital world.

From Digital Lens, which helps to combat digital eyestrain and suppor t screen viewing, to Duravision BlueProtect which is specifically designed to protect against blue and violet light waves, these solutions help users better and more comfortably view the world. PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN BEFORE BED.

Avoid looking at bright screens t wo to three hours before bed so your body and eyes can “power down,” and help you start the essential nightly restoration process that is sleep. HACK YOUR SLEEP.

When sleeping, try to make sure all digital de-

vices are completely off. Sleeping in a completely d a rk room ha s been shown to improve recovery and restoration from the day’s activities, allowing you to feel more rested in the morning. GET OUT IN THE SUN.

Exposing yourself to lots of bright light during the day will acclimate your body to the cycle of

being alert and present throughout the day, and improve your body’s ability to sleep at night. GO FOR THE 20-20-20 SOLUTION.

Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen for 20 seconds and focus on something that’s 20 feet away. This gives your eyes time to adjust and refocus, reducing fatigue.

HOUSEHOLD

Follow these tips to embrace messes Brandpoint

Warmer months bring days spent outdoors, sweet treats and backyard barbecues. Spending time with loved ones outside can also mean many messes, big and small. With kids out of school, outdoor entertaining and keeping the house clean become serious challenges even for the most organized families. Here are five easy hacks to keep your house (and kids) clean while embracing the mess. DIY ice pop drip catcher Kids love an ice pop af-

ter playing outside, but the melty drips can be a nightmare. To help catch drips and save clothes, simply insert the ice pop stick into the bottom of a paper cup or cupcake wrapper. Pull the ice pop all the way down and the catcher instantly serves as protection, saving clothes and hands from getting sticky! Kiss stains goodbye, naturally Summer fun usually brings stubborn grass stains to clothes. Easily remove pesky stains with pure white vinegar. Simply soak

the stained area of clothing with vinegar, wash as usual, and voila - clean clothes without the use of harsh chemicals. Keep sand in the sandbox It’s easy to forget to kick off your shoes after a long day playing outside. And even if you do, it seems as though sand, dirt, and other messes somehow manage to find their way into the home. To help keep dirt and sand outside where they belong, create a decorated shoe basket to leave at the front door. Your floor will thank you. Combating faucet stains

is a piece of cake As you transition inside after a long day, first things first - wash your hands! Installing a faucet that resists fingerprints and other stains is a no-brainer. A faucet with SpotShield Technology such as the Delta Merge lavatory faucet helps resist unsightly water spots and stains while staying clean for longer periods of time. Available online and in stores such as The Home Depot, this faucet translates to less clean-up and more time spent at the summer barbecue.

Cultural awareness, collaborative spirit: Building a culture of health Brandpoint

Patient behavior and attitudes about health are deeply rooted in outside influences like cultural and societal norms. Thanks to their role in providing per-

son-centered care, a type of care that takes a patient’s physical and emotional well-being into account, nurses develop close relationships with their patients. That’s why nurses’ understanding of a commu-

nity’s traditions and culture as well as patient habits is essential to identifying potential health risks and barriers and proactively managing them with patients firsthand. This community-driven

mindset and evaluation of each patient’s needs within the broader context of their life supports what the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) calls a “culture of health.” A culture of health exists when every citizen is empowered to live the healthiest life they can in and out of the health care setting. It is fueled by the families, health care teams, and other communities of care that contribute to overall health of patients. Patient and communityfirst mindset To build a healthier society, nurses must understand variables affecting each patient’s health many of which stem from their family and home environment. Patients are part of a larger ecosystem, and incorporating their worldviews and backgrounds when developing effective treatments is not an aspirational goal, but an integral part of a nurse’s job. “For nurses, building a culture of health means many things, including having a deep understanding of each patient’s concerns, and arming them and their caregivers with tools and education to manage them,” says Roberta Raymond, as-

sistant professor in the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program at Chamberlain College of Nursing. This person-centered mindset is especially important in today’s global society, where nurses interact with a diverse group of patients with different attitudes, beliefs, habits, education, financial stability and family backgrounds. He a lt h ier s o c ie t ie s through professional collaboration Cultural congruency is a team effort that involves partnerships between patients and health care professionals. By enabling interprofessional, collaborative communication between health care providers and enhancing the continuity of care from hospital to home, nurses may be better equipped to understand and react to community health indicators and needs. One nurse who is building a healthier society through professional collaboration is Linda Minnich, a staff nurse at John Muir Health in Los Angeles, who is leading the crossprofessional charge in her region. A recent Chamberlain graduate of the Bach-

elor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, Minnich passionately co-chairs her hospital’s Quality Pain Management Team. The Quality Pain Management Team assembled in 2012 to identify best practices addressing postsurgical or chronic pain management. Minnich and her colleagues developed new treatments for patients with a variety of pain management issues ranging from nerve pain after joint replacement and hip fractures to post-surgical chronic pain. The successful program was picked up by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), a national health care alliance, as a framework to help other facilities achieve the same success. “I saw an opportunity for nurses to work more closely with anesthesiologists to understand the latest treatments available,” Minnich says. “We noticed many patients were experiencing the same symptoms, so collaborating with other departments showed us new pain management techniques that will be our standard level of care moving forward.” From the classroom to the community

been greater. Rather than gamble on the next buzzworthy stock or bond and hope it lives up to expectations, there’s an alternative that’s gaining traction: land ownership. While stocks and funds depend highly on market swings, forestland requires only sun and rain to provide asset growth. However, the key to maximizing financial and recreational returns depends on proper management-and that requires more than just Mother Nature. Knowing how to manage a large piece of land can be overwhelming to a new investor or a person who may have inherited land from family. It’s important to consider the investment potential. Some common questions include: * Should you harvest any timber? From what areas? * When should you plant trees? * How should you manage the vegetation and handle invasive species? * How can you protect the wildlife? Just as hiring a financial advisor is smart to manage an investment portfolio, hiring an expert to assist in answering questions and managing a land investment is also highly advisable. Independent consulting foresters are experts that offer scientific applications as well as business acumen to landowners. Foresters offer broad-based knowledge about the characteristics of forest land, relevant economics of private timberland management and sensitivity to the full scope of issues important to private forest landowners. In addition, an independent

professional land management team comprised of not only consulting foresters, but also wildlife biologists is important. This expanded capacity of the consulting professional is essential for successful private forest management. So how does the land management process work? According to one leading consulting forester firm that utilizes both forestry and biology expertise, Bird & Crawford Forestry, there are three basic steps to proper forestland management. Following these steps will help ensure the landowner is maximizing his or her investment long-term. 1. The first step is to gain knowledge of the existing and/ or potential natural resources on the property. This includes knowing what resources are on the land, how they are located in relation to land features and what resources are worth preserving. Bird & Crawford Forestry is one group that utilizes wildlife biologists along with professional foresters to survey the land in person to map the property and determine resource assets from a financial as well as a recreational standpoint. 2. Once what actually exists on a property is determined, the next step is to establish goals for the property. Because every landowner/investor is unique, goals can vary greatly. For instance, if the land is inherited, the goal may be focused upon protecting family assets to confidently keep a family legacy intact for generations to come. Upon identifying goals, an overall management strategy can be developed.

Homeowners are looking for value in every home improvement project they take on - whether they are upgrading for resale or their own pride of ownership. With new technologies and products on the market, it is easier than ever to add value to your home with projects that ultimately pay you back in numerous ways.

STANDING WATER THREATENS PROPERTY AND HEALTH

LUXURIOUS LOOKS THAT ARE AFFORDABLE

Technology in home improvements has enabled homeowners to create a luxurious exterior that also saves money and recoups their investment. This includes contemporary trends of mixed materials, colors and textures, combining the look of rich, wood-stain shake or even stone in a variety of styles and patterns for foundation cladding or deck skirting. Polymers can actually be stained or finished to look like the real thing. “We have come light years in achieving rich shake and stone looks for any home that won’t break the bank,” says Ralph Bruno, president of Novik Sales Corp. “There are solutions available that actually install as easy or easier than typical siding, with low-maintenance and high moisture resistance, so ground contact is no problem.” The payback: years of savings on maintenance and rich looks that increase home values. BRANDPOINT

Homeowners are looking for value in every home improvement project they take on to find a system that gives the impression of indoor flooring with a fastenerfree look. This is also a safety issue, since raised fasteners can harm bare feet and get hot in the sun. There are several categories of concealed fasteners on the market, with some next-gen systems that save time and labor with more speed and stability. “Fastening deck boards on the edge with a series of pro-

prietary fasteners, guides and drill bits represents the latest deck technology,” says Chip Manger, vice president at Camo Edge Fastening. “It saves up to 25 percent on installation time and up to 50 percent on costs compared to clips and is very simple to use.” The payback: big savings on deck installation costs, better aesthetics and years of longevity.

GUARDING AGAINST WEATHER AND ENERGY LOSS

Homeowners often have no idea how much damage can arise from moisture getting into the home or the inflated cost of utility bills through energy loss. A yearly audit of windows, doors and jambs, receptacles, roof/gutter lines and other vulnerable areas can protect your home from expensive future repairs. The

simple act of sealing these areas with the right caulk can make a huge impact. “There are quality longlife sealants that adhere to a variety of surfaces with excellent adhesion and joint expansion to keep moisture out and prevent heating and cooling energy loss,” says Alan Crupper, vice president of marketing for Red Devil, Inc. “One example is Stormguard-920, a new 100 per-

The possibility of water seeping into the home is usually enough to scare any homeowner into action, but these days the Zika virus and other insect-borne diseases are driving solutions for removing standing water. In anticipation, the Wall Street Journal reports insect repellent production is expected to triple this year. Homeowners may think water transfer systems are cost prohibitive and difficult to operate, so they wait until it is too late. There are new affordable advancements that can remove water in tight spaces like window wells or wide open grassy areas where insects breed. “Look for water removal pumps with attachments on the top and side, so they fit anywhere,” says Jeremy Cantor, vice president of marketing for WAY NE Pumps. As an example he said, “We designed one such pump called the WWB WaterBUG to be versatile and portable enough to remove any standing water on the homeowner’s property quickly and efficiently.” The payback: protecting the home from seeping standing water and keeping homeowners safe. Make the right choices on today’s advanced home improvement products and systems and you can have a huge payback on your investment and make a lasting impression.

Car Review

Mazda CX-3 is compact crossover that’s responsive and stylish By David Schmidt AutoWritersInk

Center Subaru

Mazda sure got it right when they came up with the phrase “zoom-zoom” to describe what it is like to drive one of their cars. I recently tested a Mazda CX-3 Grand Touring AWD. This is a compact crossover ute, but it is more fun to drive than most small sedans and coupes. Granted, it really is a tall hatchback, designed look like a small sports ute, but that is what all small crossover utes are – cars that sort of look like trucks. It is 168.3 in. long on a 101.2-in. wheelbase, 69.6-in. wide and 60.7-in. tall. This makes the CX-3 is shorter and lower than Mazda’s best-selling CX-5, as it should be. All trim levels – Sport, Touring and Grand Touring – use the same engine. The 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine generates 146 hp. and

146 lb.-ft. of peak torque. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 29 mpg in city driving and 35 mpg on the highway. The only transmission available is a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive comes standard, and Mazda is proud that their all-wheel drive system is offered on all models. The CX-3 is as usable as any of the small crossovers in terms of carrying capability – you can easily get two child seats in the back row, and there is still room enough for the gear those passengers will always require. That is pretty much what these vehicles must be. Okay, so maybe all these compact crossovers aren’t going to all be bought by young couples either with a kid or two… or soon to be coming. In addition, there are some empty-nesters who find their size and efficiency appealing.

I would be willing to bet there are some young, single people whose hobbies require extra transportation room who consider them as well. Plus, they are then already for taking the next step in their life and only have to buy child seats instead of a new car. There ought to be another group – those who aren’t attracted by the thought of buying a family vehicle, but must consider “need” more than “want.” For those folks, from behind the wheel of the Mazda CX-3 it is very difficult not to feel you are driving a sporty sedan. Granted, the seating position is a bit higher, but the car’s response to input is simply way too much fun when not in the act of transporting the little darlings. It isn’t that this is some esoteric suspension. In fact, it is similar to many other compact crossovers, having a Macpher-

son strut front setup and torsion beam axle in back. The steering is a quick r a c k- a nd-pi n ion s y s tem using electric power steering. That is perhaps the greatest part of the spritely feel of the CX-3. It is very responsive, set up to respond quite quickly to driver’s input. This is something not often considered, but the time from a driver’s hand moving the wheel until the steering responds varies greatly in vehicles. This is normally not included among the specifications except for serious-end sports cars. I’ll bet Mazda has this system set to respond in the same ballpark as the Miata’s steering. The brakes are also good-sized for this class of vehicle, particularly since the CX-3 only weight 2,809 lbs. unless you opt for AWD then it jumps to a still svelte 2,952 lbs. To be ready for either

The CX-3 is a tall hatchback, designed look like a small sports ute. spirited driving or having little darlings in the rear seat, you can get Mazda’s full suite of safety features they call i-ACTIVSENSE. These include lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, smart brake support, rear camera, Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) and adaptive cruise control. These are well worth having. So if you can, do so. Even if you can’t, there are plenty of standard features inside the CX3’s modern and comfortable cabin. These includes a push-button starter and Mazda Connect infotainment, offering Bluetooth phone pair ing, audio streaming, USB ports for phone charging and entertainment connectivity and Commander control knob. Your information is presented on a seveninch color touchscreen. Mazda Connect also features SMS text message audio delivery and reply, voice command and Aha/ Stitcher, Pandora and

HD radio connectivity. All these sounds come to you through BOSE sevenspeaker audio system. The base-level CX-3 Sport with front-wheel drive has an MSRP of $19,960. For $1,250 you can add all-wheel drive. The top-of-the-line CX-3 Grand Touring starts at $24,990, but you should add the i-ACTIVSENSE safety package for $1,920. The model I tested was the Mazda3 s Grand Touring 5-door and its MSRP was $29890.00. There was nothing missing from it, I assure you. This is a new model for Mazda, fitting out the small end of the Mazda crossover fleet. It hit showrooms last fall. With this being the fastest growing segment in the industry, its development was most certainly a priority to fill the gap in Mazda’s lineup.
