ers, ultra slim laptops and tablets are a must in today’s living room designs, and because there are so many options and colors to choose from, families can seamlessly integrate technology to enhance the function and design - even in traditional homes. “New colors like rose gold laptops and vintage orange portable speakers create new opportunities to add personalized touches, while striking new television design, like LG OLED TVs, make a stunning statement piece,” Marks says. “And it’s not just about the advanced design form,” adds Frantz. “These products are also delivering innovative performance. It’s about form and function. LG OLED TVs not only look great, but they deliver stunning picture quality and advanced access to streaming content from popular apps, internet channels and streaming content providers.” Connected devices like Smart TVs are transforming how people consume content. Advances such as the webOS Smart TV Platform offer new features like “Channel Plus” for simple access to channels including BuzzFeed, Esquire and more. And, as the first TV to support both available HDR formats - Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10 - OLED smart TV users can stream the newest HDR titles from leading content providers like Netflix, Amazon Video and VUDU.

least one TV in their home. However, families are using spaces like living rooms to serve multiple functions, including entertainment and work, researching and making purchasing decisions, and communicating with distant loved ones. According to a recent Mintel study, more than 80 percent of millennials shop for clothing apparel online and more than 67 percent have “binge watched” a TV series, ranking it as their top online T V viewing behavior. than ever to transition from the office to the living room while also prov iding enough screen space to multitask between work deadlines, watching your favorite sporting event and latenight online shopping. A SMARTER HOME ON THE RISE
Homes are becoming as connected as the people who live in them. Today, home automation systems can control thermostat settings, lower and raise mechanized blinds, turn lights off or on, and monitor home security. “With the popularity of wireless devices and smart homes, homebuyers and real estate developers alike now have a stronger interest in creating spaces that seam-
lessly integrate advanced technology in ways that will enhance the space, and simplif y a buyer’s life,” notes real estate trends specialist Ricardo Rodriguez of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. At the same time, people remain concerned about the high initial setup costs and perceived complexity of connected homes. Professional installation of consumer e le c t r on ic s pr o duc t s has remained a rare occurrence, even among hig her-income house holds. In fact, in a recent Mintel study, only 10 percent of respondents had ever paid for custom installation of electronics. Instead, consumers prefer DIY (do-it-yourself ) and plug-and-play home monitoring solu-
tions with home automation capability, like the Smart Security from LG and ADT, which represents an easy-to-install approach that gives families greater control over how they protect and control their homes. “Product design is so streamlined and v isually appealing that consumer electronics are no longer the elephant in the room; they’re often the star. Stylish interiors are enhanced by smart technology, and that’s really having a transformational influence on modern living room design,” Marks says.

5 hot trends in school supplies
School supplies have never been this stylish. Sure, you should stock up on classic highlighters and yellow pencils, but why stop there? Why not reach for a binder with an elegant rosefoil design or a zipper pouch with a sassy slogan? Will these expressive touches make your kid study harder? They can’t hurt, especially if it makes them even a teensy bit excited to hit the books and stay or-

Save during the back-to-school season Back-to-school shopping can come with plenty of sticker shock, if you don’t plan ahead. This year, parents said they plan on spending more this year than last, with totals exceeding $900 to outfit and supply, according to a survey by Rubicon. To shave some dollars off that total, here are a few savvy strategies to save while preparing for school.
Watch for extreme deals This is the key time of year to follow the cardinal rule of the extreme saver: Keep an eye on the ads for rock-bottom prices on school essentials. In the weeks leading up to the
start of school, it’s your time to save big.
Take advantage of price matching A traditional frugal shopper will tell you not to settle for anything but the lowest price. If you have to make six lists and drive all over town, being a penny pincher costs dearly in time. Instead, compare those weekly ads and save yourself some time by taking advantage of price matching. Staples, for example, offers a 110 Percent Lowest Price Guarantee, meaning all you have to do is show proof of a competitor’s lower price, and Staples will not only match SAVE >> PAGE 14

The study underlines how this group lives in a “phigital” world, a term coined by David Stillman, who is an author, speaker and expert on Gen Z. That is, physical and digital. He finds “Gen Z students are adept and fluent with technology, yet they still value and see the benefits of non-digital practices such as writing things down with pen and paper

Welcome Home!
and especially communicating face-to-face.” His son, Jonah Stillman, a 17-year old high school student who writes and speaks about Gen Z, agrees, “I can’t imagine life without technology, as I use it throughout the day, even at school. However, when I’m studying for that big test or trying to remember something from class, I find it helps to actually write things down.” By understanding how Gen Z students think, communicate and learn best, parents can set them up for success as they head back to school. Harness the strengths of both digital and analog study tools. According to the same study from the brand, 61 percent of respondents use both digital devices and handwritten notes when it comes to school work. In fact, 81 percent stated that they would feel restricted if they could only work on digital devices. Before the start of the school year, talk to your student about their needs and find digital and non-digital tools that complement one another. Perhaps they would prefer to open a textbook and flag key points to remember rather than download the e-book on their tablet. On the other hand, they may prefer an e-book but learn best when they can jot down key facts on paper. Equip students with the supplies they need to study efficiently. Find a note-taking solution that works. Handw r it ten notes helped 93 percent of students keep up w ith schoolwork in a typical week. Whether they prefer to type lecture notes LEARN >> PAGE 14

or write them out longhand, students will better recall and retain important information when they extract key details from a dense outline of notes. Therefore, as students review their notes, they should jot down facts and reminders on Post-it Super Sticky Notes. Not only does the act of writing enhance retention, but the notes can stick and restick to organize ideas in a notebook or on a desk, as well as be used as flash cards. “Using sticky notes is ideal as it taps into exactly how Gen Z has been trained to communicate,” says David Stillman. “From social media posts to texts, they typically write in sound bites. Giving them a full sheet of paper would feel more out of place, if not overwhelming.” Remember how Gen Z interacts and communicates with others. While Gen Z has spent years texting and tweeting, electronic communication is not the only medium. In fact, 84 percent of Gen Z said they prefer faceto-face communication, according a study called “Gen Z @ Work,” conducted by Gen Z Guru and the Institute for Corporate Productivity. An in-person meeting works well for these students. Therefore, consider setting up a weekly after-school session to touch base with a teacher, or review lessons with a tutor or peer. Understand there is a time and place for digital devices, but balance is key. Some students may be distracted in classrooms by the temptation to text friends and browse social media, while other students find digital devices are helpful for tasks like researching information for

BRAIN FOODS
Eating for academic success Research shows that certain vitamins and nutrients support brain health and development. That means the snacks, meals and supplements your child consumes can give them an academic edge, in the classroom and in life. Lauren Zimet, director of the Early Insights Healthy Foundations Program and a mother herself, understands how food can empower the body and brain. Here are Zimet’s top picks for brain foods that can help support your child’s learning and development. Protein for breakfast and lunch will not only curb hunger pangs
throughout the school day, but will also help sustain mental energy and level moods. Kid-friendly protein ideas include eggs, organic chicken/turkey/beef, nonGMO nitrate-free turkey bacon, and beans. Have leftovers from last night? Dinners in the U.S. traditionally have more protein than other meals, so eating last night’s leftovers in the morning is a fun brain-boosting breakfast option. Some examples of healthy complex carbohydrates to incorporate into your child’s diet are brown rice, quinoa and oats. These types of carbs elevate levels of serotonin in the brain, which has a calm-

ing effect. Need bread? Look for organic options so you can feel confident your child is consuming the nutrients they need and not the additional chemicals that are commonly found in conventional breads and grains. Did you know the brain is about 60 percent fat? That means when your kids eat healthy fats, it can support brain function. Pack snacks with nuts, seeds and avocado. When cooking, replace unhealthy hydrogenated oils with healthier options such as extravirgin olive oil or coconut oil. Eat more meals with cold-water fish like salmon to get more omega-3

essential fats, which play an integral role in promoting cellular health and brain development. These nutritional powerhouses provide generous amounts of calories, fats, complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals and fiber. Kids can enjoy making their own healthy seednut snack mixes, then package in baggies or small containers. Also, try swapping traditional peanut butter for other nut butters like almond or cashew for a healthier take on PB&J. Real, whole foods like fresh fruits and vegetables support brain health while calming the
nervous system during times of stress. Blueberries, raspberries and strawberries are full of antioxidants and vitamin C, which research shows helps regulate cortisol, a hormone responsible for stress. And don’t forget bananas! Not only are they full of potassium, but they also help the body produce hormones that help reduce stress and promote better sleep. By paying a little attention to the foods your child eats, you’ll be set for a healthy start to a brainsmart school year! Courtesy of BrandPoint

How today’s students learn best Brandpoint
All students heading back to school this year are part of the new generation known as Gen Z. Born in the years of 1995-2012, this group is defined by the fact that they grew up with a widespread usage of technology from a very young age. Laptops, software, apps and digital devices have granted them powerful tools to access nearly the entire bank of human knowledge. However, it is important to understand this generation is not solely digital, as studies have found handwriting and analog tools remain important elements of communication when it comes to learning. According to a recent study commissioned by the Post-it Brand, 85 percent of Gen Z students feel they learn best when they use both digital and non-digital tools for schoolwork. The study underlines how this group lives in a “phigital” world, a term coined by David Stillman, who is an author, speaker and expert on Gen Z. That is, physical and digital. He finds “Gen Z students are adept and fluent with technology, yet they still value and see the benefits of non-digital practices such as writing things down with pen and paper and especially communicating face-to-face.” His son, Jonah Stillman, a 17-year old high school student who writes and speaks about Gen Z, agrees, “I can’t imagine life without tech-

However, when I’m studying for that big test or trying to remember something from class, I find it helps to actually write things down.” By understanding how Gen Z students think, communicate and learn best, parents can set them up for success as they head back to school. Harness the strengths of both digital and analog study tools. According to the same study from the brand, 61 percent of respondents use both digital devices and
handwritten notes when it comes to school work. On the other hand, they may prefer an ebook but learn best when they can jot down key facts on paper. Equip students
with the supplies they need to study efficiently. Find a note-taking solution that works. Handwritten notes helped 93 percent of students keep up with schoolwork in a typical week. Whether they prefer to type lecture notes or write them out longhand, students will better recall and retain important information when they extract key details from a dense outline of notes. Therefore, as students review their notes, they should jot down facts and reminders on Postit Super Sticky Notes. Not only does the act of writing
enhance retention, but the notes can stick and restick to organize ideas in a notebook or on a desk, as well as be used as flash cards. In fact, 84 percent of Gen Z said they prefer face-to-face communication, according a study called “Gen Z @ Work,” conducted by Gen Z Guru and the Institute for Corporate Productivity. An in-person meeting works well for these students. Therefore, consider setting up a weekly afterschool session to touch base with a teacher, or review lessons with a tutor or peer. Understand there is a time and place for digital devices, but balance is key. Some students may be distracted in classrooms by the temptation to text friends and browse social media, while other students find digital devices are helpful for tasks like researching information for a report or reading current events. Evaluate your student and whether smart phones, tablets and laptops are being used for education-related purposes.
Reach your goal. You’re 42 percent more likely to get something done if you write it down, according to research from the Dominican University of California. Post-it Brand is encouraging people nationwide, especially students, to write down their goals, dreams and aspirations as a way to #makeitstick and reach achievement in the new school year.

The science of lawn care made simple Brandpoint
America has home renovation fever. At one time, a handful of home improvement shows were on late at night or during the day, but now entire networks are dedicated to showcasing remodels, flips, additions and new constructions. The result is that more homeowners are ready to tear out the old and install maple cabinets, granite counters or marble bathtubs. Many undertake these renovations with the belief that it will increase their home’s value. But the simple fact is that large-scale projects often cost more than the value they add, and rarely do homeowners recoup their expenses. A far easier, less expensive and effective strategy is to focus on your lawn. As every good realtor will tell you, curb appeal and making a good first impression are fundamental in selling your house at the price you want. Therefore, having a well-kept lawn is key to your home’s value. Even if you’re not selling right now, a healthy lawn is a long-term investment that contributes to the overall value of your neighborhood and location. Science, simplified T hose immaculate greens you see on golf courses or large estates are so pristine partially due to engineering and a scientific understanding of the soil and how grass grows.
BRANDPOINT
America has home renovation fever. People go to college to specifically study the science of lawn care. The good news is, to get similar results, you don’t need men in lab coats to study your lawn. The basis of the best kept lawns in the world is the same as in your neighborhood: a lawnmower. Types of lawn The biggest challenge
many homeowners face is how to adequately mow a yard that has a variety of terrain. Hills, dips and bumps can stop many lawnmowers and result in uneven cutting. Many push mowers now come with a propulsion system that takes a lot of the work out of mowing the lawn. The big advantage here is that a self-propelled mower is able
to navigate a variety of terrain, and in wet conditions, provide an even cut. To bag or to mulch? There are the two main types of lawn mowers, ones that mulch and ones that collect. Mulching, which leaves behind a finely chopped layer of grass, is ideal for areas suffering from droughts. The grass clip-
pings not only aid in water conservation, but also fertilize the soil, leading to a greener, healthier lawn. These lawn mowers have a high cutting deck, which increases the airflow that helps to evenly distribute the clippings. When summer rolls into autumn, mulching can also be used to dispose of leaves while cutting grass. The mix-
ing of grass clippings with mulched leaves helps both decompose more quickly, making it a great and easy way to prep your yard for winter. People who suffer from seasonal allergies or don’t plan on mowing as frequently, usually have a lawn mower that bags the clippings. These type of lawn mowers also extend their usefulness into the autumn months, allowing homeowners to skip raking and use their lawn mower to collect and bag fallen leaves. This option works particularly well with dry leaves. The do-all solution There is a reason golf courses have a fleet of lawnmowers, as they require a special machine for each job, for many variants and terrain. Thankfully, consumers don’t need a garage full of lawn mowers. Selfpropelled, with 4-wheel drive, the Husqvarna LC221A lawn mower offers an all-in-one advantage that gives you the choice to mulch or to bag clippings. This allows people to adapt to environmental conditions, such as mowing a small yard or a farm yard, in a drought or after a rainfall. It also provides multiple options for leaf removal, which extends its value past the end of the usual mowing season. In essence, they’ll be able to maintain a lawn they’ll be proud of and, more importantly, adds value to their home.

Fast fixes to boost curb appeal for a quick home sale Brandoint
It takes just seven seconds to form a first impression after meeting someone new. The same psychology applies to the first impression people get when shopping for a new home. Within seconds of arrival, home buyers are forming positive and negative opinions about the property. This is invaluable to home sellers. If you want to sell your home fast and for a premium price, you can’t afford botching the first impression. Fortunately, revamping the facade doesn’t have to cost a small fortune. In just one weekend you can boost your curb appeal with a few simple updates. Enhance the garage door A garage door accounts for up to 40 percent of a house’s facade. Often ignored, a bland or ugly garage door is a turnoff to home buyers. However, there’s no need to buy a costly new one. Instead, upgrade your current door with simulated window overlays and decorative handles and hinges from Coach House Accents for upscale appeal at a fraction of the cost. Start by adding a fresh coat of paint to the garage door. Then to get a custom car-
riage house appearance, add the window panels made from lightweight, durable automotive-grade plastic resin. Finish with hinges and handles that mimic high-end forged metal. Coach House Accents can be purchased online at w w w.coachhouseaccents. com, www.amazon.com and at select Lowe’s stores nationwide. Update the entryway The entryway is the focal point of the front of the home. Start by clearing clutter and cleaning stairways. A new coat of paint on the stairs and door is essential. You might also consider investing in a new door handle and other hardware to modernize the space. In addition to keeping the area clean, add attractive elements to the entryway. A potted plant or two offers a welcoming touch that reflects seasonal style. Toss worn welcome mats for fresh, new options. If you have space, a comfortable chair paints an inviting picture for potential home buyers. Liven up the landscape Sprucing up the yard goes beyond pulling weeds. Start by trimming hedges and trees to create a tidy appearance. If you don’t have much greenery, adding flowers and other plants can have a dramatic
visual impact. Finally, a new layer of mulch will help your landscape features pop and makes any property look instantly fresh again. In addition to clearing brush and updating plants, enhance outdoor spaces with thoughtful use of landscape lighting. Pathway lights on walkways, accent lights in planters, and garden lights around the porch make a space more stylish and useful. Plus, when home buyers view the property in the evening, beautiful lighting will impress them the moment they pull in the driveway.

Building industry experts say now is the best time for homeowners considering a home improvement project to look at the energy efficiency of their house. Homeowners should ask themselves, “How much energy is being lost through inefficiencies in my home and how much is this energy loss costing me each month?” The U.S. Department of Energy suggests there are several inexpensive and quick ways to reduce energy consumption and lower monthly energy bills. Installing a programmable thermostat can contribute to a 10 percent reduction on heating and cooling costs. Lowering your water heater’s temperature by just a few de-
grees can make a noticeable impact on reducing your water heating bills. The ways your home uses light can also make a noticeable impact. Using natural light to your advantage and relying less on artificial light can contribute to improving your home’s energy efficiency. Also, installing ENERGY STARrated high-efficiency windows can help reduce energy loss. Working with an expert Homeowners serious about optimizing their home’s energy efficiency should consider working with a certified Home Energy Rater. These professionals conduct a series of tests to assess a home’s energy efficiency to provide an overall efficiency rating in much the same way that appliances are rated.

The new-for-2016 Toyota Prius has grown up, and become a car that most people would be comfortable driving. The Prius no longer requires any philosophical commitment to own and operate it. For 2016 there is a really new version, one that is stylish, a key consideration if you want the car to compete with others in its size and price zone which aren’t hybrids. Toyota has sold 3.5 million Prius worldwide, but needs for the Prius group of bodystyles to keep growing. To do that, they are going to have to attract people who aren’t going to buy it just because it’s a hybrid and gets very good gas mileage. You can even tell by the commercials on television, which are now cute, enter-
taining and lively. The commercials aren’t wrong: who’d of thought there would be a “power” button on a Prius. More importantly, it actually makes a difference, and uses the electric motor to add its instant torque to the car’s initial acceleration so that it actually has excellent offthe-line pickup. This fourth-generation 2016 Prius Liftback is now based on a world small-car platform. While it gives the Prius the same 106.3-in wheelbase as the previous model, it is also 2.4-in. longer, 0.6-in. wider and 0.8in. lower. Most impressive is that the Prius, with a coefficient of drag of 0.24 has just about the lowest drag of current production cars, except maybe some of the exotic supercars. The looks are modern, much like other new genPRIUS » PAGE 30

erations of small cars. It had a very aggressive front nose, sweeping side lines which converge in the back. This Prius looks like a car young urban Millennials would buy rather than being something that would pretty much only appeal to a someone who’s a fan of good gas mileage. Speaking of which, I did get 89 mpg on a trip home from the local high school at night. It’s about three miles in suburban traffic. Okay, I nursed it a bit, but overall in the week I had the car I averaged just more than 50 mpg, in mostly suburban traffic. Now that I look back, I drove no miles on the interstate, but I did have fun seeing how long I could keep the engine from coming on. I did pretty well, too. The car I tested was the top-of-the-line, the Toyota Prius Four Touring. The MSRP for this loaded model is $33,708.00. You can spend quite a bit less on one as the base model’s price begins at $24,200. Toyota makes it pretty simple to know where you are in the model lineup. There are six grades, starting with the entrylevel Prius Two. Next is the Prius Two Eco – which gets the best fuel mileage, but doesn’t offer many amenities. Next up is the Prius Three, followed by the Prius Three Touring grade for buyers looking for more
The new interior’s look and feel is modern and somewhat techno. It will appeal directly to the young buyer, fitting into their take on what things should look like. dynamic driving. At the top is the Prius Four and Four Touring. These are designed for those people who want more than an ecological statement for their driving pleasure. In addition to as much stylishness, both inside and out, these models have another advantage. They offer the features and safety upgrades which appeal to people who perhaps never considered a hybrid. The new interior’s look and feel is modern and somewhat techno. There is
nothing about it that selfrighteously say’s “I’m a hybrid.” It will appeal directly to the young buyer, fitting into their take on what things should look like. At the same time, it design isn’t over-the-top, putting off those who’s taste is broader or more traditional. The dashboard wraps around the front of the car, flowing into the side of the car. The seats are both comfortable and supportive, as well as attractive. The instruments
are attractive, and things seem to fall nicely to the hand and eye, always a sign of good design. The design-statement of the interior is just modern enough to say to those who are new to hybrids that they are joining into a smart set. In addition, the interior is very quiet, so occupants can enjoy the premium features such as the Entune infotainment and connectivity which, for those who can afford it, are becoming essential to their driving experience while
getting an EPA stated 54 mpg in the city and 50 mpg on the highway. Safety features help make the Prius more than an icon of automobile efficiency. you can add Toyota Safety Sense, a package consisting of automatic pre-collision braking, which is a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection. There is also lane-departure alert with steering assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic highbeam switching. But Toyota didn’t just
gussy up the Prius, making it prettier, there are plenty of changes that make the car bigger, safer and even more efficient. There’s also a lot more high-strength steel, making is safer in an accident, and the added body stiffness makes it handle better as well. The 1.8-liter gasoline engine and two electric motors use a continuously variable transmission which integrates smoothly the power from the engine and motors. The transaxle, which gets the power to the wheels, uses a multishaft layout that allows for a higher motor-speed this system reduces parasitic losses by 20 percent, compared to the previous model. More importantly, this generation, with the exception of the Eco model, gets their nickel-hydride batteries replaces with lighter, more efficient lithium-ion batteries. And there’s a smarter regenerative braking. The Prius drives well, and can even be fun to drive. It looks significantly better and more broadly appealing that the previous three generations. Toyota is hoping that more affluent empty-nesters (and old people) decide they can fit a Prius into their lifestyle and do so. They will probably find that they can. ADVICE
Get car ready for the rest of the summer By Family Features
Sun may be shining and summer breezes blowing, but before you put those windows down and settle in for a leisurely drive to soak up that fresh air, your car needs some freshening of its own. Regular car care helps ensure that your vehicle looks and runs its best, and timing your car care to the seasons can help ensure all of your equipment is in top condition to protect your safety. Ensure you and your car are well-protected and ready for summer with this car care checklist.
Give your car a checkup An all-over maintenance checkup is a good starting point to get a pulse on your car’s condition. A multi-point inspection can help alert you to signs of wear or damage on parts such as your belts, which can weaken as a result of colder weather, and your brakes, which are critical for safe driving.
Your engine relies on clean oil for smooth operation, so if it’s time for a change (usually every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, depending on manufacturer recommendations) you can schedule a change to coincide with your service appointment.

Your tires are another of your car’s essential safety features. Excess or uneven tire wear can be extremely dangerous in wet and slick road conditions. If your tires can’t get adequate traction, you may find yourself hydroplaning or losing control. What’s more, tires are an expensive investment, so before embarking on your next road trip, make sure your tires are properly inflated, balanced and rotated.
