ATTENTION ALL NEW YORK CORN PRODUCERS On April 5, 2017, the Kansas City federal judge dismissed the lone legal claim on which the Syngenta national class action was based. This is a litigation game changer. There no longer is a national class action protecting the legal rights of New York corn producers who chose to stay in the class and not opt out. Every New York farmer who has grown corn for market since 2013 has been damaged, has a claim, and may participate in the corn lawsuit to recover money damages from Syngenta. At this juncture, however, the only way New York Corn farmers can participate in the Syngenta corn lawsuit and share in any recovery is to hire a lawyer and file an individual case. Informational meetings about the Syngenta Corn Litigation will be held at the locations and times listed below. Lawyers involved in the litigation will discuss the current status of the litigation, recent developments, and what you need to do now to protect your rights. Food will be provided.

Medina HigH ScHool iMMerSeS StudentS in FrencH and SpaniSH culture The Medina High School Library was recently transformed into the countries of France and Spain. Spanish teacher Alexandra Peracciny and French teacher Samantha Szeluga created cultural experiences for their students to take part in as they practiced their conversational language skills. Their “trips” began with Banker 1: Federico Rosario (Spain). getting their passport stamped and exchanging currency. The students then decided where they would spend their time and visited a cinema, café and participated in several activities. There were language police who walked around to make sure that no one was using English. The events were hosted on two separate days. “It is a great and fun way for the students to be able to use their language skills,” says Mrs. Musicians: (L-R): Toby Kiebala, Katie Bielicki, Peracciny. Abby Griffin, and Kyla Leno (Spain).

Medina Student to Go Bald for BuckS Ayden Amrhein has almost reached his goal of raising $800 for Goin’ Bald for Bucks. Money raised goes to cancer research and patient care at Roswell Institute. The Clifford Wise Middle School student says he was inspired by an aunt who had thyroid cancer. Once he stated his mission, friends, family, classmates and community members have rallied around him and so far he has collected $500. Every morning he goes to the jug he has set up in the school’s main office and checks his website to see what he can add to his total. “If people want to donate they can go to the Bald for Bucks website www.baldforbucks.org and find my page and Ayden and his collection jug. donate there too,” he says. On May 27, Ayden will be going to Shear Elegance in Medina to get his head shaved. “I think my classmates don’t believe I am going to shave my head, but I am going to. I think they all want to see me bald,” he laughs. “I am just so proud of him,” says Principal Elaine Wendt. “Having a student who takes so much interest in other people and the lives of others is really great. It is nice to see a student make a contribution to society.” Mrs. Wendt says the posters that Ayden has hung up at the school have raised students’ awareness and got them asking questions. “I think it’s great that he is inspiring others and being an advocate. We are all hoping he can reach his goal.” Anyone interested in donating to Ayden’s cause can go to www.baldforbucks.org and search for his page under participants.

NEW BALANCE

ATTRACTING & CARING FOR THE “JEWEL” By Douglas H. Domedion Last week we learned that the rubythroated hummingbird is quite an unusual bird. Today let’s see what we have to do to lure a hummer to your yard and then Over time the word will get out that there are “free” meals at your place! properly take care of his needs. The first step to attracting a “flying jewel” is to have an assortment of flowers they like. Flowers such as bleeding heart, columbine, lilies, morning glory, phlox, trumpet vine, honeysuckle, bee balm, jewelweed, and cardinal flower are all favorites. They not only provide nectar, but also attract insects on which the hummingbirds will feed. The next step is to put up some hummingbird feeders. There are many types of feeders to pick from, but the best ones have a lower container with holes in the cover that they can feed through. This type of feeder is not prone to spilling or dripping on windy days. The other thing to look for is a feeder whose cover can be taken apart to clean. Some of these feeders have perches on them, which is good, but not essential. Place your feeders out of the wind and in a shaded area near your flowers. Once the birds have started you can progressively move it closer to the house where you can see it better. Eventually you can hang it next to your window for some real close viewing. There are commercial mixes you can put in your feeder, but they are no better then what you can make yourself. Mix one part sugar (no honey) to four parts water. Boil this mix for a few minutes and then let it cool before you put it in the feeder. Any extra left over can be stored safely in the refrigerator. You can put a drop of red food dye in the mix to show you at a glance the level of the solution. Years ago there was a concern about red food dye being unsafe, but today’s dye is OK. Once temperatures get really warm you should change the solution every two or three days if the sun hits it, every three or four days if in the shade. The feeder should be taken apart and cleaned with hot water each time you refill it. Mold and bacteria can build up inside the feeder and harm the birds. It’s best to use only enough solution that will be used up in three or four days. If the inside does get dirty and you can’t get it clean you can use a mild chloride solution in it, but rinse it out good before you put the mix back in. Keeping the feeder clean and the solution fresh is very important. You will find that once several birds have found your feeder they will constantly be fighting over it. I solve this by putting several feeders up, each being out of sight of the other, which allows them to feed without so much competition. Your feeder should be up about the first of May so it’s there when the birds return, but it’s not too late to put one up now. One misconception about feeders is that leaving them up too long in the fall will keep the hummers from migrating. This is not true and you can leave them up to the beginning of October in case a bird migrating late comes along. One problem you may have with your feeder is hornets and ants getting into it. There are traps that you can buy and place near the feeder that will not hurt the birds. Building a moat around the hanger on the feeder can discourage ants. Take a Tide liquid soap bottle cap and drill a small hole through the center of the bottom. Push an eight-inch piece of number 12 or larger wire through this hole and bend a hook on the bottom end to hang the feeder. Bend a loop on the other end so you can hang it from the hook that is used to hang the feeder. Now take some silicon glue and seal the wire around the area it goes through the cap. After you hang the feeder fill this cap with water and the ants will not be able to get to it. It is not too late to get a feeder set up so you can enjoy those lively hummingbirds all summer. Your life will be richer and the birds will take your mind off your everyday problems. Seen any fox pups out yet? My contact information is 585-798-4022 or [email protected].

EASEMENtS If there is an easement on the property that a buyer intends to purchase, it will be revealed in a title search. An easement gives someone else the right to use part of the property for a specific purpose. For instance, it may give a neighbor the right to use the driveway to get to his or her own landlocked property. If the wording in a document grants an easement to a particular person, the restriction usually terminates when he or she sells the property. If it is granted to someone for a term of years, or to someone and “his heirs and assigns,” the easement most likely remains in effect regardless of who owns the property. Do you have any questions about easements or any other aspect of real estate law? If so, please call the Law Office of MACK & PACE. Our attorneys have years of experience and we can help you deal with the legal issues surrounding your single largest investment. In addition, we are happy to accept cases pertaining to family law, will, estates, trusts, criminal law, and contract issues. Call right away to make an appointment.

Tips When Toasting the Bride and Groom Toasting the bride and groom at a wedding reception is a responsibility that typically falls on the shoulders of the bride’s father as well as the best man and the maid of honor. Though it is an honor to give a wedding toast, it also can be nerve-wracking, as no one wants to give a toast that’s memorable for all the wrong reasons. While the best toasts are often those that veer off the beaten path, coming from the heart rather than from a how-to guide found on the Internet, there is a certain formula men and women can follow to ensure their toasts cover all of the appropriate bases without offending the bridal party or fellow guests. • Acknowledge the guests. Families are more geographically diverse than ever before, so more and more weddings host guests who come from far and wide to celebrate with happy couples on their wedding days. It’s customary for men and women making wedding toasts to acknowledge the guests, thanking them for being there. This is often a great way for best men and maids of honor to break the ice and calm their nerves, especially at larger weddings where they may only know a small percentage of the guests. When thanking the guests, be sure to thank the parents of the bride and groom as well. • Explain your relationship to the bride and/or groom. Best men and maids of honor should devote a portion of their toasts to explaining their personal relationships with the bride and/or groom. Introduce yourself and explain how you met the bride or groom. Oftentimes, such stories have a comical twist that can further calm your nerves. • Aim for a jovial toast. Wedding toasts are typically given at the wedding reception, when guests and the bridal party are ready to celebrate. Such an atmosphere lends itself to a jovial toast wherein best men and maids of honor focus on happy times with the bride and groom. Tell a funny anecdote that illustrates the special bond you have with the bride or groom. When choosing a story to tell, remember to keep things appropriate for guests of all ages, including young children. • Steer clear of alcohol before giving your toast. Many people overindulge in alcohol at wedding receptions, but best men and maids of honor should avoid consuming alcohol until after they have toasted the bride and groom. Horror stories about drunken, inappropriate wedding toasts may seem more like an urban legend than a legitimate possibility, but the tendency for alcohol to lower people’s inhibitions makes it dangerous for men and women to consume it before giving their toasts. • Give your best wishes to the bride and groom before raising your glass. Raising your glass to toast the bride and groom is often the last step before your toasting duties officially end. But before you raise your glass, remember to offer your best wishes to both the bride and groom. Once those sentiments have been expressed, ask the guests to raise their glasses and toast the newlyweds. Toasting happy couples at their wedding receptions can be stressful for best men and maids of honor who are unaccustomed to speaking in front of large groups of people. But following a certain formula and speaking from the heart will ensure such toasts go off without a hitch. n

10 tips for Creating

effeCtive ads Here are a few tips and tricks professional graphic designers take into consideration when developing an ad.

1

6

Make your ads easily recognizable.

Keep your ads’ appearance consistent and make them distinctively different from those of your competitors.

2

Avoid the use of too many different typefaces, overly decorative borders and reverses. These devices are distracting and reduce the number of readers who receive the message.

3

Use a dominant element.

A large picture, graphic or headline ensures quick visibility. Photographs of local people or places have high attention values. If you can make just one element of an ad strong, the whole ad will appear stronger.

4

Use a prominent benefit headline.

Select the main benefit your merchandise offers and feature it in a compelling headline. The first question a reader asks is, “What’s in it for me?”

5

The copy should be enthusiastic and sincere. Don’t be too clever or use unusual or difficult words.

7

Use a simple layout.

Let white space work for the ad.

White space focuses the reader’s attention on the ad and will make the headline and/or illustration stand out. Too much clutter in an ad makes the ad blend into the page.

Make copy complete.

State price or range of prices.

Never be afraid to state prices. Readers often overestimate omitted prices.

8

Specify branded merchandise.

9

Include related items.

If the advertised product is a known brand, point this out. Plus, using the brand name may also qualify the ad for cooperative advertising allowances from the manufacturer!

Make two sales instead of one by offering related items along with a featured one. For instance, if advertising a dress, increase potential sales by including shoes or handbags in the same ad.

10 Urge readers to buy now. Tell them to get out of their chairs and do something!

A final thought... Remember that your ad, no matter how big or how small, is a representation of your business. It is all a reader knows of you and your services, so take the time to get it right and you’ll see the results you’re looking for! 170 North Main Street, Albion, NY 14411 (585) 589-5641 • Fax: (585) 589-1239 [email protected] www.lakecountrypennysaver.com

Did You Know? According to the United States Department of Labor, single men and women are having an easier time finding work in the slow economy than their married counterparts. A survey conducted by the Labor Department found that single men and women had lost roughly 5 million jobs during the financial crisis. However, the same survey revealed that single men and women, in spite of the slow job recovery across the country, regained about 90 percent of those jobs. Married people have not fared nearly as well. Since the onset of the financial crisis, married people lost more jobs (6 million) than single people and have not been nearly as successful regaining those jobs, recouping only about 22 percent. The disparity could be due to a host of factors, but economists feel married people, many of whom live in dual income households, have had the freedom to be more selective when choosing their next jobs, a freedom not afforded to single men and women. n

Spice Up Your Scrambled Eggs Conventional wisdom says breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But many people find breakfast is also the most bland meal of the day. Those who want to venture off the beaten breakfast path to enjoy something more flavorful than another bowl of cereal can spice things up with this recipe for “Akoori (Indian Scrambled Eggs),” a tasty if somewhat more fiery take on traditional scrambled eggs from Suneeta Vaswani’s “Easy Indian Cooking” (Robert Rose). n Recipe at right

The Ultimate Johnny Cash Tribute

(Indian Scrambled Eggs)

Fri., June 9

Albion Middle School

Serves 4 to 6 8 eggs 1 teaspoon salt or to taste 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 3 tablespoons oil 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 1 cup chopped onion 2 teaspoons finely chopped green chile (see tip below) 1 cup chopped tomato 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 teaspoon turmeric 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped Tomato wedges & cilantro sprigs, for garnish 1. In a bowl, gently whisk eggs, salt and pepper. Do not beat. 2. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat and add cumin seeds. Stir in onion and green chile and saute until golden, 3 to 4 minutes. 3. Add tomato and saute, stirring continuously, for 1 minute. Stir in cayenne, turmeric and cilantro. Cook for 1 minute longer. Reduce heat to mediumlow and slowly add egg mixture. Cook, stirring gently, until eggs are soft and creamy, 3 to 4 minutes. Do not overcook. 4. Serve garnished with tomato wedges and cilantro sprigs. Tip: The important thing in Indian cooking is to use a chile pepper with spirit. Fresh cayenne peppers, or any similar ones, would work very well. If using Thai peppers, now readily available in North America, use only half the amount called for in the recipe. In a pinch, jalapenos also can be used. n
