PARENTING

Meet the millennial mom: Same infant feeding concerns, savvier about Brandpoint

Mothering styles can be as unique as the moms themselves and vary from generation to generation. A millennial mom would never think of putting her baby to sleep on his stomach, or using a laundry basket to transport her newborn in the car - yet those were accepted mothering practices in decades past. And while some newmom concerns are universal, like questions about feeding baby, millennial moms are answering those questions in their own unique way. Millennials - people between the ages of 18 and 33 - constitute the largest portion of the American workforce, and they’re the largest generation since the baby boomers, according to Pew Research. Also known as “Generation Y,” millennials are rewriting every aspect of American life, from how they bank to how they parent. A study by BabyCenter found a millennial mom is more likely to seek parenting advice from friends, family members and doctors than Generation X mothers, is more focused on

value and relevance from the brands she buys, and spends far more time on her family than on herself. And a new “Pulse of Pediatricians” survey by Perrigo Nutritionals, makers of Store Brand Infant Formula, shows that even though millennial moms are concerned about the same things that have worried mothers of every generation, like how their babies eat, sleep and poop, they definitely have their own approach to parenting. The survey suggests that millennial mothers - and millennial pediatricians - may be a bit savvier about savings and nutrition than other generations. Still, mothers of all ages are leaving money on the table when it comes to their choice in baby formula, the study found. Infant formula perceptions vary by age, even among doctors Seventy-nine percent of millennial pediatricians agree that Store Brand Infant Formula and nationally advertised brands of formula are nutritionally comparable to each other; just 63 percent of older pediatricians knew

this fact. All infant formulas must offer complete nutrition and meet the same strict FDA standards. Older doctors are also more likely to provide free formula samples than millennial pediatricians - 67 percent versus 51 percent. What’s more, when they give a sample, 39 percent of older pediatricians say they are specifically recommending that formula brand for continued use. Only 19 percent of millennial doctors intend the sample to be a recommendation that moms continue using that same brand. Just as formula perceptions vary by age among doctors, millennial mothers have different views than older moms. Among millennial-age mothers, just 26 percent perceive a formula sample as their pediatrician endorsing the brand, whereas 41 percent of older moms believe a sample comes with their doctor’s endorsement of the brand. Perhaps consequently, millennial moms are significantly more likely to try different formula brands during their baby’s first year than older moms - 75 percent versus 60 percent.

Still, even though 67 percent of all mothers know big marketing budgets drive the higher costs of nationally advertised formula brands, just 16 percent save money by purchasing Store Brand Infant Formula - even though they could save up to $600 per year on formula that meets the same FDA standards. “While many moms and all doctors agree breastfeeding is best for babies, the reality is in our busy lifestyles that’s not always possible or in a family’s best interests,” says Dr. Jamie Wells, a board-certified pediatrician and child expert named among America’s Top Pediatricians. “It’s refreshing to see the change in approach from millennial doctors and millennial mothers when it comes to recommending and choosing formula that’s best for infants’ nutrition and families’ budgets.”

Parents: Tips for preventing and battling super-lice Brandpoint

Plenty of common childhood ailments are heavy on “ick factor,” no matter how harmless they really are. Few experiences, however, have the power to gross out parents quite so thoroughly as learning their child has head lice. And now, the pests have mutated into “super lice” that are resistant to standard, over-the-counter, pesticide treatments. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say anywhere from 6 million to 12 million children ages 3-11 get head lice each year. Now, super lice have spread into at least 25 states, according to researchers at the Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. The bugs have

developed a specific mutation that allows them to resist pyrethroids, the most common type of pesticide used in over-the-counter lice treatments. “Head lice are inconvenient and itchy, but basically harmless,” says Dr. Tanya Altmann, a pediatrician and spokesperson for Nix. “Still, just the idea of parasitic insects feasting on their child’s blood is enough to put many parents into a panic. When they learn the treatments their own parents relied on may not work for their children, parents can feel like they’re fighting a losing battle.” However, it is possible to beat the super bugs, experts agree. A two-step process that addresses treatment, re-

Look for small white “flakes” near the base of the hair follicle these are the lice’s eggs, commonly called “nits.” You can tell the difference between nits and flakes very easily; gently brushing your fingers over the hair will dislodge dandruff, but nits will stay put because they’re cemented to the strand of hair. Nymphs - young lice - are very difficult to see and fully grown adult lice are about the size of a sesame seed. Look for evidence of nits around the ears and at the

nape of the neck. Treating head lice Start with an over-thecounter treatment. Parents have been relying on brands like Nix for generations, and now the manufacturer has introduced Nix Ultra 2-in-1 Lice Elimination System. This new solution is a safe, non-toxic and pesticide-free over-thecounter remedy specially designed to kill both traditional and super lice, as well as their eggs. The two-part kit contains a professional metal comb designed to remove lice and eggs, and a solution of mineral oil and dimethicone to help make comb-outs easier. “It’s important to follow the treatment guidelines detailed on the package as closely as you can,” Altmann says. “Use the combout solution and metal comb as directed to achieve optimum results. It’s also recommended that you repeat the treatment in about seven to 10 days, which is about how long it would take any missed eggs to hatch.” Prevention tips Lice spread through direct head-to-head contact, so discourage children from literally putting their heads together. Avoid sharing hats or soft hair accessories like bows and hair ties, pillows, towels and blankets that could also help lice spread. If someone in your household does get lice, parents should also wash all clothing, linens and toys used by the infected person in hot water or through dry cleaning; lice can only live 24-48 hours away from their food supply. “The good news is, you can treat head lice effectively,” Altmann says. “Lice can’t swim, fly or hop and they don’t spread disease. And, to further put your mind at ease, you can’t get head lice from or give them to your family pet!”

HIGHER EDUCATION

There’s a ‘new majority’ in college classrooms Brandpoint

When most people hear “college student,” they likely envision an 18-year-old who is fresh out of high school. But the student body on America’s campuses has evolved. In fact, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, nearly 75 percent of undergraduate students today could be considered “non-traditional.” These non-traditional students are often careerchangers, entrepreneurs and parents who are balancing the demands of school, work and family life. They want the skills and knowledge required to demonstrate capability and value to employers immediately, not after a few years of learning on the job. These non-traditional students are the “new majority,” and as they pursue the right resources to succeed academically and navigate the responsibilities they carry outside of school, they are reshaping the future of education. Who embodies the new majority? Students like Thomas Wolfe, Andres Hernandez, Felipe Dugrot and Lisa Smith - all recent DeVry University graduates who set out to pursue their career goals with a very specific set of criteria in mind. “I knew I needed a school that would be customizable to my schedule,” says Wolfe. “DeVry University not only offered many ways to learn, but they were committed to helping me complete my degree on time, on my terms.” A father of four, Wolfe worked full time at Sapa Extrusions while taking

He earned his bachelor’s degree in technical management with a specialization in business intelligence and analytics management, and is a plant controller at Sapa. Hernandez also juggled academic and professional responsibilities. He held three on- and off-campus jobs - including an intern-

ship and position as a data model technical specialist, both at American Express - and launched Upstge, a grassroots music-streaming hub, while attending DeVry University in Phoenix as a full-time student. The computer information systems skills he developed in his courses were directly transferable to his current role as a data engineer at

American Express. “In my field, technology is constantly evolving and I need to keep up with the changes,” says Hernandez. “DeVry University was in tune with what my industry needed and prepared me to deliver on those expectations through technology skills that were immediately applicable to my work.”

Dugrot, a father of two with a busy schedule, wanted a school that would offer him flexible online courses and the expertise that is essential for a career in technology. He earned his bachelor’s degree in network and communications management and is a solutions support engineer for GE Healthcare. “To me, a bachelor’s de-

gree symbolized freedom and opportunity,” he says. “I’ve made my family proud, and have new skills that I plan to continue to hone.” Smith was looking for a degree program that offered high-definition learning for a growing field. She began working at Kforce Staffing & Solutions in between earning her bachelor’s degree in network and communications management at DeVry University and an MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management. Smith recently completed her MBA program and continues to work at Kforce as a consultant. “I wanted a school that understood the job market and the importance of training and preparedness in a technology-focused career,” says Smith. “The hard and soft skills I gained at DeVry University gave me more confidence both personally and professionally.” For Wolfe, Hernandez, Dugrot and Smith, a nontraditional college experience offered them the resources and flexibility to gain the necessary skills for their career paths - and the confidence to advance their professional lives. DeVry University helps these students, and many others like them, overcome what were once perceived as barriers to their aspirations. And with a decades-long history of partnership and collaboration with some of the nation’s leading companies, DeVry University will continue to give its students the skills that the job marketplace needs today and for the future.

HOMES

Tips for creating a multi-purpose home office space Brandpoint

Many Americans feel working from home would be a dream job, and more than one-third are already living that dream; 37 percent of U.S. workers telecommute, according to Gallup. However, unless you’re a full-time telecommuter or an entrepreneur running a business from your home, it may be hard to justify dedicating an entire room in your house for home office space. Today’s home offices must be able to multi-task as efficiently and effectively as the people who work in them - and that’s something you should keep in mind when making renovation plans. “We see fewer and fewer buyers requiring a dedicated home office when setting their search criteria for buying a new home,” writes Gwen Daubenmeyer, a real estate professional who recently blogged about home offices on the Integrity Real Estate Team blog. Daubenmeyer notes that laptops, cloud storage and online filing services have made it possible to work from virtually any room in the house, so it’s no longer necessary to have a room dedicated solely as office space. Instead of turning that spare bedroom into a space strictly used for work, why not consider improvements that will help the room multi-task? With a few smart upgrades, spaces such as attics, basements, spare bedrooms and other smaller areas can serve as

BRANDPOINT

Be more productive in your home office with more natural light and silent, passive ventilation through Energy Starqualified, solar powered fresh air skylights from Velux America.

BRANDPOINT

Brighten your home office niche with a roof window or a solar powered fresh air skylight while bringing natural light and fresh air into the workspace. multi-functional spaces for work, play, working out and socializing. Tips for multi-tasking offices • Good lighting is essential for any home office, but if you want to avoid the institutional look of traditional office lights, consider increasing the amount of natural light that enters your multi-purpose office space. Adding Energy Starqualified, solar-powered, fresh-air skylights, like those from Velux America, is a cost-effective way to bring natural light, as well as passive ventilation, into any home office space. So-

lar-powered blinds in designer colors and patterns enhance the blended decor of a multi-use room, while allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room with a programmable touchpad remote control. Plus, a 30 percent federal tax credit is available to homeowners on solar-powered skylights, blinds and installation costs. Roof windows, which are very similar to skylights but are in-reach and operated by hand, are another popular option, especially in attics. For home offices without direct roof access, a Sun Tunnel tu-

bular skylight with an optional light kit can provide light 24/7. Visit www.whyskylights.com to learn more. • Divide the room visually to define functional areas. You can do this in several ways, including using a folding screen to partition off the room’s work area, or hanging curtains to conceal lesser-used sections of the room when they’re not in use. You can also use the room’s layout to create a natural flow. For example, tuck a desk and shelving into an attic dormer area as office space. • Many home offices need to double as a guest bed-

room. If working beside an inviting bed all day makes it difficult to resist the temptation of a nap, consider alternative bed styles. A daybed can be dressed up with pillows to serve as a sofa where you can comfortably read reports. Or, completely hide the sleeping area by adding a Murphy bed to available wall space. • Make it easy to rearrange furnishings in the room by putting your desk on coasters just like your office chair. Whenever you need the room to function as a workout space, home theater or social center, just roll the office furniture out of the way. • If you’re turning a bedroom into a multi-purpose office, no one should need the closet for hanging clothes. Instead, convert the closet into a cozy spot for a workspace. You

can place a small desk inside, or hang wide shelving that can function as a workspace for your laptop, printer and files. When you’re not working, simply close the closet doors! • Whenever a room has to serve more than one purpose, organization is critical. If you don’t have the space for filing cabinets, or simply don’t like the way they look, bookcases and shelving can be a great alternative. Don’t overlook the possibilities presented by extra wall space; you can layer shelves to maximize storage space above your desk/work area. Daubenmeyer says that following the housing bubble, homeowners are smarter and want more functional space. The multifunction home office is one solution that is gaining popularity.

Protect your home from fire and storms Brandpoint

Investing in your safety pays off, whether you live in a coastal region prone to hurricanes or in a place fires can occur and storms inevitably strike. Preparing your exterior with fire-resistant, water-resistant siding and hurricane storm-rated shutters can ensure your home stands up to nature’s harshest elements - and weathers them beautifully. Fortifying your home exterior to resist fires and ride out storms is doable when you choose durable and innovative Grayne Engineered Shake & Shingle

siding and Atlantic Premium Shutters. An engineered composite, Grayne features a highperformance weather-resistant cap, which resists moisture absorption. Unlike cedar shingles, it will never cup, curl, crack or split and never needs painting. It can also easily replace or complement fiber cement or engineered wood siding. Fast and easy to install, its cavity back design allows for airflow behind the panel, saving time and money versus installing on wooden laths. To deliver the most genuine look, Grayne’s patent pend-

ing dual offset installation method enables the shingle siding to be easily installed in the same layout as natural cedar. This also prevents keyway stacks. E x t remely du rable , Grayne holds a Class 1A Fire Rating, exceeds the 170MPH wind load rating and is certified by Florida Building Code and Texas Department of Insurance. It comes with a 50/5 year limited warranty (50 years against manufacturing defects, 5 years on labor). With “hurricane shutters,” crafted by Atlantic Premium Shutters for weather extremes, you can

safeguard at-risk homes during hurricane and storm seasons. Homeowners appreciate the attractive form and protective functions of their hurricane storm-rated window shutters, which shield glass and seal water out. Both Architectural and Classic Collection designs, from elegant Louvered Shutters to rustic Board and Batten Shutters, come in hurricane stormrated versions, blending beauty and brawn. Atlantic Premium Shutters’ Storm Systems all utilize durable 1/8-inch-thick polycarbonate panels affixed to shutter backs. Shutter systems that lock from inside or

outside of the home are available. All Atlantic Premium storm-rated shutter systems meet stringent International Residential Code (IRC) and International Building Code (IBC) 2006 impact testing requirements. For homes, the Large Missile Impact Test requires shutters to withstand impacts from nine-pound 2’x4’ lumber pieces hurtling at 34 mph, replicating wind-borne debris. Atlantic’s Bahama Storm System also complies with Florida’s 2006 Building Code, one of the strictest nationwide, requiring products to provide rigorous protection against hurricanes. With shutters this strong, you can throw

your weather concerns to the wind. Tapco’s highly durable, low-maintenance Grayne and Atlantic Premium Shutters make storm and disaster preparedness a snap. When you protect your home with the industry’s top fire-resistant siding and toughest storm-rated shutters, Mother Nature is no match. You’ll enjoy decades of lasting strength, unmatched aesthetics, and ultimate peace of mind -come forest fires, hurricanes, rain or shine. Call 1-866-288-2726 for Atlantic Shutters, 888-289-1169 for Grayne or visit www.TheTapcoGroup.com for more information.
