App gives patients the power to help ensure medication serial numbers are authentic Brandpoint

Smartphones can do just about anything these days - from tracking your sleep, to controlling your electricity and streaming television. Now, thanks to an app developed by EMD Serono, Inc., the North America biopharmaceutical business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, smartphones can also give patients the ability to verify the authenticity of the serial number on all EMD Serono medications by scanning the two dimensional barcode on the package. “Although our company’s exposure to counterfeiting in the U.S. has been limited, we are constantly evaluating all of the ways we can best serve pa-

tients, and our app is one tool that puts the power to help verify the serial numbers on the packages of EMD Serono medications in their hands,” says Kimberly Fleming, associate director, Product Security & Outbound Logistics. “We believe that EMD Serono is one of the first health care companies in the U.S. to serialize all products in advance of requirements set forth by the Drug Supply Chain Security Act.” People taking any of EMD Serono medications can download the free smartphone app, Check My Meds(TM), on Apple(R) or Android(TM) devices and scan the barcode on the product packaging to authenticate the medicine’s serial

number. The app will alert patients instantly to confirm the authenticity of the product serial number or refer the patient to an EMD Serono representative if they have any questions. To address the issue of counterfeit medicines, which

has been an increasing problem in industrialized countries such as the U.S., the FDA mandated that by November 2017, all drug companies will need to include a unique serial number on each package of drugs dispensed.

Protect againt mosquitos this summer Brandpoint

Summer is here, which means you can count on two things: warm weather and mosquitoes. From backyard barbecues and neighborhood get-togethers, to baseball games and trips to the beach, families all over the country are spending more time outdoors enjoying the weather. As concerns about the spread of mosquito-borne diseases increase, it is important to take proper precautions to avoid mosquito bites and stay informed on the best ways to keep you and your family protected. “As the world’s largest, privately owned urban entomology research lab, we have over 60 years of experience studying insects,” said Dr. Tom Mascari, researcher, SC Johnson Entomology Research Center (ERC). “Seven days a week, 365 days a year, we study about 20 different species of insects - including six species of mosquitoes - which makes us leaders in this field and solidifies our commitment to educate families on how to stay protected.” Dr. Mascari and his colleagues at the ERC offer these helpful tips so that you can enjoy your summer and stay protected from mosquitoes. Prepare Remove standing water. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so removing it from your property can reduce their numbers. Rain gutters, buckets, bird baths or fountains with stagnant water are all possible breeding sites. Plan activities outside of peak mosquito hours. Mosquitoes bite at any time of the day, but many types are most active around dusk and dawn. If possible, schedule your outdoor activities to avoid these times, and have personal repellent

on hand to protect yourself and your family. Apply a pest pretreatment to your yard. A pretreatment product, like OFF! Backyard, helps protect your yard from mosquitoes and other insects. Some product applications kill insects on treated hard, non-porous outdoor surfaces for up to eight weeks.

Always read product directions prior to application. Protect Apply personal repellent. Applying a repellent, such as OFF!, can help protect you from mosquitoes. Choose among pump sprays, aerosols and towelettes that contain active ingredients such as DEET or Picaridin.

Tips for navigating the sharing economy Brandpoint

Boundaries For Pets 800-732-3181

Thousands of people stayed in rooms and houses last night that belong to strangers. More hopped into cars with people they’d never met and accepted a ride to a restaurant or to their home. A young woman rented a designer dress she saw listed online. These are a few examples of the sharing economy - a system in which people rent homes, arrange rides and borrow personal items typically

through online services that facilitate the transactions. Rather than doing business with hotel chains, taxis or department stores, consumers are engaging with strangers in a way that is atypical of traditional business interactions. The sharing economy generated about $15 billion in revenue in 2013 and is expected to hit $335 billion by 2025, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers. Like many big changes, the emergence of the sharing econ-

omy has required consumers and companies to re-educate themselves and rethink their approach. While there are many safeguards in place, owners and renters tend to overlook the role insurance plays in this new economy. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Resources such as Insure U from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) can help you avoid unexpected surprises in the world of shared rides and rooms. A few things to keep in mind: Welcome home The vast majority of accommodations booked on HomeAway, VRBO or Airbnb go off without a hitch. Still, there are stories involving families coming home to torn-up couches, smashed-in walls and homes littered with trash. If you regularly rent out a room in your home, it’s important to know many homeowners policies won’t cover guests’ injuries or property damages.

Talk to your insurance agent and determine if you need additional liability or landlord coverage. Likewise, if your next vacation involves renting a room or villa, make sure your homeowners or personal liability insurance covers any damages that could happen during your stay. Don’t be taken for a ride If you have a car and don’t mind driving, contracting as an Uber or Lyft driver may be a way to make extra money in your spare time and meet some colorful characters. Before you start, make sure everything is safe for you and your passengers. With this in mind, insurance is one of the most important factors to understand. The most popular ride-share companies offer contingent collision and comprehensive coverage when a driver accepts a ride request or has a passenger in the vehicle. However, drivers need to understand that while you can insure your vehicle for personal use or for commercial use, in some cases you cannot insure it for both. More insurance companies are creating policies that cover drivers who use their vehicle for both commercial and personal use. Contact your insurance representative to find out if there are any gaps in your coverage to reduce your liability and ensure a safe experience. Goods and services for hire The sharing economy doesn’t stop there. It’s also now possible to make a little extra money by renting out your power tools, golf clubs, camera equipment and much more - including your time and labor. Before you rent, get a security deposit and take plenty of photos to document the item’s condition. Talk with your insurance agent to figure out what kind of information you need for your homeowners insurance policy to cover whatever it is you’re renting out.

Brain foods: Eating for academic success POWERFUL PROTEINS >>

Brandpoint

What do the foods your children eat have to do with the grades they bring home? Surprisingly, more than many people think. Research shows that certain vitamins and nutrients support brain health and development. That means the snacks, meals and supplements your child consumes can give them an academic edge, in the classroom and in life. Lauren Zimet, director of the Early Insights Healthy Foundations Program and a mother herself, understands how food can empower the body and brain. Here are Zimet’s top picks for brain foods that can help support your child’s learning and development.

Protein for breakfast and lunch will not only curb hunger pangs throughout the school day, but will also help sustain mental energy and level moods. Kid-friendly protein ideas include eggs, organic chicken/turkey/beef, nonGMO nitrate-free turkey bacon, and beans. Have leftovers from last night? Dinners in the U.S. traditionally have more protein than other meals, so eating last night’s leftovers in the morning is a fun brain-boosting breakfast option. INCREDIBLE

C A R B O H Y-

DRATES >> Some examples of

healthy complex carbohydrates to incorporate into your child’s diet are brown rice, quinoa and oats. These

types of carbs elevate levels of serotonin in the brain, which has a calming effect. Need bread? Look for organic options so you can feel confident your child is consuming the nutrients they need and not the additional chemicals that are commonly found in conventional breads and grains. FANTASTIC FATS >> Did you know the brain is about 60 percent fat? That means when your kids eat healthy fats, it can support brain function. Pack snacks with nuts, seeds and avocado. When cooking, replace unhealthy hydrogenated oils with healthier options such as extra-virgin olive oil or coconut oil. Eat more meals with coldwater fish like salmon to get more omega-3 essen-

tial fats, which play an integral role in promoting cellular health and brain development. MIGHTY NUTS AND SEEDS >>

The art of innovation: The key to unlocking creative blocks Brandpoint

The Wright Brothers knew they were going to crash, yet tried to fly anyway. Unlike their competitors, the former bicycle mechanics brought extra parts to the sand dunes to make onsite repairs and reduce cycle time. Their cre-

ative courage resulted in not just a new product (the aircraft), but also a process for failing quickly, learning fast and outpacing their competition. There are myriad inspiring tales of similar legendary so-called fails. The multibillion-dollar

success of Post-it(R) Notes is directly attributed to two employees at 3M, Spencer Silver and Art Fry, who mistakenly formulated an adhesive that didn’t stick well, but which just happened to unstick as needed. The duo persisted, despite management recommendations to abandon the project, and because of their resilience, their failed glue formula was transformed into the ubiquitous office product we can’t live without. Virtually all companies - from startups to Fortune 500s - need it. Corporate stagnation is real. Innovation is happening at breakneck speed, and even historically successful corporate stalwarts are finding themselves staring in the face of irrelevance. No matter how knowledgeable a team may be of their market, product portfolio and competitive landscape, they face a perilous proposition: grow or fold. And nothing prompts growth more than creativity and innovation. To boost your own creative

thinking powers - whether at work or for your own personal needs - try these tips from Dalí Museum Innovation Labs’ executive facilitator, Nathan Schwagler: High-performing creative people learn to bend the status quo and they do it by optimizing their conversations. These successful creative thinkers temporarily suspend judgment during idea generation. In the context of innovation, one of the most prohibitive things to do is to attempt to both generate and evaluate new ideas at the same time. Instead, try splitting a brainstorming session into a few parts: First, immerse yourself in the data and information surrounding the challengeThen, generate a clear statement that summarizes the opportunity or problemTry a divergent exercise - something to clear your mindNow you’re ready to focus your energy on developing solutions. Once you have a solid list of solutions to consider, force yourself to stretch further. Feel tapped out? Go even further! A good goal is to get to that challenging third round of ideas, which research suggests will be the most innovative. When you’ve truly exhausted your ideation, take a break and come back to the challenge with evaluation criteria in hand - define what success looks like and then deliberately apply that criteria against your list of ideas.

Salvador Dalí famously quipped, “Have no fear of perfection, you’ll never reach it.” The Museum has adopted the artist’s approach in its Innovation Labs program. “When it comes to solving the complex problems of our interconnected global economy, Dalí’s fear-free, trial-andlearn approach is the type of creative thinking that we optimize for at The Dalí Museum Innovation Labs,” said Schwagler. From Dalí’s fearless artistic prowess to the creative and courageous examples set forth by the Wright Brothers and the Post-It Notes inventors, there are numerous shining examples of great things that can emerge from creative thinking and a never-say-never spirit. Even the most impactful products and solutions can be sparked by an open mind and fresh perspective. The Dalí Museum, in St. Petersburg, Florida, is a world-renowned Museum featuring an unparalleled collection of art works from celebrated artist Salvador Dalí. The Museum’s Innovation Labs offers one-ofa-kind programs that carefully combine more than 60 years of psychology and management research on creativity, creative problem solving, and innovation, infused with Dalí’s philosophy and methods to unlock a team’s true untapped creative potential. HIGHER EDUCATION

5 gigs that will help you pay for college Brandpoint

Let’s face it, college is expensive. Whether you’re still in school trying to pay for textbooks and housing, a professional facing your student loans or a parent saving for your child’s future tuition, the cost of an education can result in debt that looms for decades. More people are finding that full-time jobs are not even beginning to cover the

costs. Today’s gig economy and sharing economy offers many different avenues to supplement your budget and ease the burden of education-related expenses, all while providing flexibility and self-determinant hours. Drive for a ride-sharing service. Do you have a car, auto insurance and some spare time? Ride-sharing apps, like Uber and Lyft, offer an opportunity to make quick cash by driving riders in your local area, using your own vehicle. Drivers work as independent contractors and receive a payment based off of how many hours or miles are

logged each week. “They make it extremely easy to make quick money if I need it,” says Aidan Monheim, a student at the University of Massachusetts-Boston who drives for Lyft in his spare time to earn money for utilities and other bills. “It allows me to be flexible around my classes and earn money without working a set number of hours a week.” Rent your room. Another “side-gig” opportunity that is gaining popularity is the homesharing industry. Apps like Airbnb and HomeAway connect would-be travelers with locals willing to rent out rooms, or their entire home. Simply list your place on the site, and screen candidates based on your preferences. By listing your residence during peak travel times and arranging to stay with friends or family, renters can earn supplemental income for their education, with very little effort. Become a direct seller. Direct selling provides a flexible opportunity for people to make additional income on their own terms, and within their own networks. Take Nakul Arora, for example, who became an Amway Independent Business Owner to help pay for business school. Amidst earning his degree, working full time as an accountant, and studying for professional certifications, 25-yearold Nakul worked his direct selling business in the evenings. “I saved every penny I earned through my Am-

By joining a successful company like Amway, a global leader in direct selling, you can share and sell high-quality products to your friends, co-workers and colleagues to earn additional income. The unique flexibility of direct selling offers an opportunity for you to work as little or as often as you want, around traditional day jobs, classes, family, or other responsibilities. Work for a home services company. Often described as the services used by those with

more time than money, apps like TaskRabbit, Handy, Thumbtack and HomeJoy offer opportunities to get paid for home cleaning and maintenance work. Seemingly simple tasks, such as cleaning a home, mowing a lawn or assembling a piece of furniture can run up to $50 an hour. And the best part? Like Uber, direct selling and other gig economy services, you work on your own terms and can make your own schedule around studying, work or other commitments. Sell your old stuff. Is your closet piling up

with unwanted clothes and shoes? Maybe you have spare furniture cluttering your storage space, or a drawer full of old electronics. Why not turn your clutter into cash? Apps like ThredUp, PoshMark and LetGo offer opportunities to sell your stuff in an auction-like setting, and do all the work for you - simply list your items, watch them get purchased and place them in a shipping bag that is provided by the company. Selling old items is an easy and painless way to make extra money for tuition, textbooks, or loans.

Relocating? Six tips for a stress free move Brandpoint

Does the prospect of moving have you buzzing with excitement? Or are you left with worries about packing and clutter? This moving season, an estimated 40 million Americans will move or relocate, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Moving is an exciting time, creating opportunities to start fresh and reinvent your life. But whether you’re moving by yourself or uprooting your entire family, moving presents a number of stress-causing challenges. Staying organized and planning ahead will be your best armor against the moving blues. Ease your transition with some of these professional organization tips: MAKE A PLAN >> Your calendar will be your best friend throughout the moving process. As soon as you know your moving date, schedule moving help and/or a truck rental. Then, block out time in your calendar for each step of the move, including packing, payment due dates and paperwork. Schedule a day or several to walk through your home, opening every cabinet and drawer, to get rid of what you don’t need or use. There’s no sense in paying to move items you don’t want in your new home. CLEAR THE CLUTTER >> Did you know that 91 percent of Americans say they have kept an item because they feel guilty

HOMES

Create visually striking doors in your home Brandpoint

Think of a door opening and closing. Chances are you pictured it swinging on hinges, since that’s how most doors operate. But, more homeowners are choosing other door hanging hardware for a unique look with their interior and exterior doors. If you’re looking for a way to make visitors to your home say “wow,” consider alternatives to hinged doors for an unexpected twist. “Once you’ve chosen the door that’s perfect for you, it can be hung in a number of distinctive ways,” says Brad Loveless, marketing and product development manager for Simpson Door Company. “A pocket door, sliding barn door or a pivot door can add some personality and pizzazz to your home.” POCKET DOORS >> Similar to closet doors hung on a

track, pocket doors slide open and closed, but disappear into the wall when closed. Popular in home offices, bathrooms and utility rooms, pocket doors save space and can make a room feel more open. Using a pocket door in place of a hinged door saves about 10 square feet of floor space, notes home improvement expert Tim Carter. Depending on the width of the opening, you can use either a single pocket door, or double pocket doors that slide into opposite walls and meet in the middle when closed. Because they don’t seal as tightly as hinged doors, pocket doors are largely limited to use inside the home, instead of as entry doors. SLIDING BARN DOORS >> Barn doors are a bit like pocket doors in that they slide open and closed, but they’re hung on tracks that are visible. When opened, the doors are

located on one side of the wall, instead of disappearing into the wall. For large openings, such as between dining rooms and living rooms, you can even hang multiple barn doors on tracks in order to divide the spaces. A number of companies offer high-end barn door track hardware, in a range of styles and colors. “People like the unexpected look of a barn door,” says John Golesh, president of door hardware manufacturer Goldberg Brothers. “They’re a great way to add a rustic, yet elegant look to your home. And with the wide variety of door hangers and handles, a barn door can complement any interior décor.” In addition to the chic look barn doors offer, homes for sale with “barn door” in their listing sold for 13 percent more than expected and 57 days faster, according to research by

84 S. Main St., Winsted (860) 379-2784 www.thedamoreagency.com Colebrook

Zillow Diggs.

Common in ancient buildings, pivot mounted doors are virtually unseen in North American homes. For homeowners who want an element of surprise, a pivot door is a good choice. In place of hinges or overhead sliders and tracks, pivot doors rotate open and closed around pins installed in the top and bottom of the door frame. The pins are set several inches in from the door frame, depending on the door’s size. “For high-end homes with extra-wide doors, pivots are a great way to handle the additional weight, and will be unlike anything your visitors have seen before,” Loveless says. “We are making many different super-sized doors for this exact application.” Some of these doors are huge - measuring up to BRANDPOINT four feet wide or more. As If you’re looking for a way to make visitors to your home “large, simple rectangles,” say “wow,” consider alternatives to hinged doors for an unexpected twist. PIVOT DOORS >>

CAR REVIEW

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution says goodbye This 2015 Mitsubishi Evolution is the “Final Edition” model for good reason. The car’s run is over and it’s not known whether there will be a next generation or not. This was the car that created Mitsubishi’s reputation in the U.S. market. Based on a World Rally Car, it was fast, aggressive and had a huge spoiler on its rear. Add to that a blazing bright blue for the rally colors, and their success in rallying, and young car nuts couldn’t wait for it to come to this market. When it did, they bought them, sooped them up even further, bolted on outrageous wheels, exhausts and gave them paint jobs and created the reputation which sold even more of them. While they were always a niche car, they did a great job of getting young guys in the showroom where their

wives convinced them to drive out in a more family-friendly vehicle that also wasn’t quite so expensive. Not that it was expensive per se. the one I tested had a list price of $41295.00. But there aren’t many people who can afford a BMW or similar road rocket really considering them. It was always a car for a fuel-driven twentysomething. But it has now grown too old, and with maybe a bit too much competition and so it’s gone at the end of this year. It will be missed. But frankly it is now clearly old and feels it. This car reminds you just how far cars have come in the past 10 years. It is stunningly analog, and that’s not a bad thing in the driving and performance aspects. But it is quite noticeable in the things your girlfriend will notice – and find unappealing. No chauvinism here, as virtually all the buyers of the Evo are men.

The Evo is about performance, and just that. The heart of the Final Edition is a turbocharged and intercooled 16-valve four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine generating 303 hp. and 305 lb.-ft. of peak torque. That power flows to all four wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The engine does a great job of creating power, but its older technology turbocharging system has significant lag, and allows the car very little torque at lower revs – that 305 torque number is at 4000 rpm, whereas more modern engines make that max torque closer to 200 rpm. It is not an easy car to get off the line fast, and if you do, you soon come to recognize the smell of overly heated clutch. While the manual transmission is well geared for the enthusiastic driving, particularly on an auto-cross or racetrack, as it is geared to keep the revs up where the power is. But that

gear spacing means that at 70 mph it is running fairly hard. Shall we say that there is little noise cladding between you and the engine. When having fun, that is great, but poking holes in the air at 65 or 70 mph on a highway is somewhat tedious. Mitsubishi calls it drive system the Super All-Wheel Control System. It uses an active center differential which will move up to 50 percent of the tires to the front and back. It also integrates yaw control, stability control and the anti-lock brakes to create three driver selectable modes: “Tarmac,” “Gravel” and “Snow.” While it is a very good system, so many cars today have similar capabilities thanks to the integration of the control modules for these systems that it doesn’t stick out much. On the other hand, the handling can leave you breathless. The suspension uses in-

verted MacPherson struts up front with a multilink design at the rear. The suspension control-arms are made of aluminum (as are the hood, roof, front fenders and front and rear bumper beams). To make this car’s handling even better, Mitsubishi added performance Eibach springs and Bilstein shock absorbers. The brakes are very good though, and will stand up to any competition in stopping power, as it should. The Evo is fitted with lightweight, two-piece Brembo brake rotors up front. So the car stays extremely flat, with almost no nose dive even under max braking. Granted this is helped by serious performance tires. The steering is quite quick and positive – if you move your hands, the car moves right now. The result is that there are few drivers who actually can get this car to the limits on a public road for more than a

couple of corners. That’s because even if they are relatively slow corners, the Evo takes them so fast that it’s just silly. So for fun driving, the Evo is still delightful. But inside you simply can’t forget that this is a car of the past. The dashboard is classic, but hard plastic and with a dated look. The touchscreen in the middle is quite small with less-than-average resolution. There’s no backup camera, and the noise, vibration and harshness constantly remind you that this is a car about going fast, and not in a straight line. It was a car for purists, and in that sense still is. That’s because it is still fast, although there are other compact cars that aren’t too far behind without being primarily for motorheads. It is now a classic and will only get more classical. When it comes to the “Final Edition” there are only 1600 of them being made.
