Buy Local: Spend $20 on the 20th Want to help give our local economy a boost? It’s easy to do. Plan to spend an extra twenty dollars on the 20th of the month. The Washington County Chamber is hosting a new Buy Local awareness program this year, and you are invited to participate. Studies show that many adults do not realize the importance of shopping in their own community. They do not realize that when they spend dollars outside the county for goods and services that can be purchased here, they support other communities. Even online shopping causes your dollars to go elsewhere. Sales tax dollars kept here benefit every business and every resident. Sales tax dollars support our police and fire departments, parks and recreation facilities, libraries, businesses, local workforce, schools and more. And shopping at local independently-owned businesses puts 3 times more dollars back into the local economy. So the challenge is to think about what unique local business would you miss if it went away? Make that the place you choose to spend an extra twenty dollars this month on the 20th. Encourage your family and friends to do the same thing. To further encourage this economic boost, the Chamber is sponsoring a prize drawing along with the new campaign. All residents of Washington County are invited to stop by the Chamber and pick up a “Buy Local” punch card. For each time you spend $20 on the 20th of the month at any Washington County business, show your receipt at the Chamber afterward and receive a “punch” on your card. When your card is completed (5 punches), it will be entered into a drawing for a $220 grand prize! Drawings will be held quarterly (starting July 2011) and the winner will receive a $220 gift certificate to the Chamber Member business of their choice. You can view details about the promotion on the Chamber website: www.BrenhamTexas.com. Go to Chamber Information on the home page, and then News & Events.

July 4th just around the corner With a new look for the 12th Annual H-E-B presents Fireworks-on-the-Brazos in celebration of the Fourth of July, Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site is the place to bring your family. The “Birthplace of Texas” has a full day of fun activities planned to celebrate our nation’s independence, capped off by a remarkable 30-minute laser light show choreographed to your favorite patriotic tunes. It’s the first time a laser show has been presented at the park and it is due to the extreme drought conditions in the area. (Note: the laser light show will be best viewed from the amphitheater area inside the park, not from outside the park as in the past.) Start the day by visiting the site’s main attractions: Independence Hall, where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed in 1836; Barrington Living History Farm, an 1850s-era cotton farm and the original home of Anson Jones, the last president of the Republic of Texas; and Star of the Republic Museum, the only institution of its kind telling the story of the time in history when Texas was a sovereign nation. Park admission is free, but some tour fees apply. To commemorate the events of March 1836, Star of the Republic Museum has mounted a special exhibit titled Fifty-nine for Freedom, exploring the life and contributions of each delegate with numerous artifacts and documents owned or created by many of the 59 signers. Festival food vendors will be on hand all day with special free activities beginning in the evening. A special “Kid Zone,” complete with moonwalk, water balls and other hands-on games, will also be available. Familyfriendly entertainers will roam the park, along with historical interpreters. Children will be invited to participate in 1800s period games beginning at 5 p.m. Cool off with some free Blue Bell ice cream and Coca-Cola products at 5:30 p.m. At 7:15 p.m., head to the Amphitheater for a special free concert by the Western swing band “Back at the Ranch.” At approximately 9:15 p.m., enjoy the highlight of the evening, a Fireworks-on-the-Brazos Laser Light Show. The display will also be simulcast on KTEX 106.1 FM. So bring your radio, blanket and lawn chairs to fully enjoy this wonderful free celebration. Free shuttle buses will be available to bring visitors from satellite parking areas to the Visitor Center area between noon and 10 p.m. For additional information, contact 979830-1824 or [email protected].
