History: The area was settled about 1713, as part of Woodbury. A parish was organized in 1743, and the town was incorporated in 1796. In early days a silver mine was opened on Mine Hill. When iron was found in the mine, a smelting furnace was built. Later, the mine was used by The Columbia University School of Mines for demonstration purposes. Three leaders of “The Green Mountain Boys” came from Roxbury: Ethan Allen, Seth Warner and Remember Baker.
