atadi is a remote village, some 6km away from the nearest town. It is home to around 50 families and has a population of 245 people, including 141 children. Most people rely on the land to make a living. For example, some collect green leaves or firewood from the local jungle to sell at the local market. Until recently, the biggest issue in this remote part of Daringbadi was a lack of safe drinking water. The nearest stream was 1.5km away, and the local women or children would have to make regular trips to fill up containers to take back to their families. As a result, parents usually had little choice but to leave young children unattended, as they would be out working in the fields.

A lack of supervision sometimes meant the children were vulnerable to bullying and even harassment. In the summer months, things were even worse. The stream would dry up, so people were forced to go to the nearest river to find water. Not only was this an even longer journey but the river was also heavily polluted. Those drinking from it would frequently fall ill with infections or potentially life-threatening diseases such as diarrhoea or typhoid. Such conditions were particularly dangerous for pregnant women who are more

We did not have water for days and even for weeks in our village and we had to go and bring it from river every day. But after World Vision constructed Water pipe line in our community, there is clean and safe water running in our houses.

susceptible to disease, endangering both them and their unborn children. Young children would also become ill regularly. Many of them were already malnourished, partly due to the difficulty in getting enough water to grow vegetables in the tricky terrain. Your help has truly improved life for the people of Katadi, allowing the installation of a water pipeline to take water from the spring direct to the village. This has meant that all the families in the village have access to water all year round, even in the summer. They can use this to drink, for cleaning and washing, and to help grow fruit and vegetables to improve their diets. The flow of change It’s hard to overestimate just how much of a difference this has made to people in Katadi, thanks to your support. Children are now able to wash before they go to school, and can get there on time. They no longer have to make a long trip to the stream before classes start. This, in turn, is helping them to concentrate on their studies, and the hope is they will go on to get better grades and find work when they finish study. Many people have now started growing their own food, using water from the pipeline. Nanda Pradhan and his wife Sunalika have recently started cultivating potatoes, chillies, cabbages and aubergines, in what used to be a completely unproductive field. “We spend the whole day working in the garden now,” says Sunalika, with a smile. Their children have a much better diet with plenty of nutrition and variety. The couple can also sell any extra produce they may have, bringing in extra

money to help the family in other areas. It’s hard to believe that such a simple provision could have such a dramatic impact on the lives of people in this tiny village. Had it not been for your support, families and their children would have continued making those long and dangerous trips to the stream. Thanks to you, the future looks much brighter for the community of Katadi.

Health boost Nearly 600 children received extra meals this year to help build up their weight and strength, after it became clear they were dangerously malnourished. The children were given a nutritional meal every day for 90 days to try and get them back to a healthy condition. At the end of this, more than half had their health restored. Your support has helped this scheme bring long-term benefits, and spread better understanding of the importance of good nutrition and having enough to eat.
