We Remember Them … Camp Carol Joy Holling isn’t just for young campers. It has a wonderful conference center that was the setting for Southwood’s grief retreat, appropriately titled, “But I’m still grieving! The Second Year and Beyond.” Each of us that attended had experienced the death of a spouse within the past three years. The beauty and quiet of Carol Joy Holling was the perfect place for taking time to support each other as we shared our stories Janet Swanson pictured with her lateand remembered our spouses. husband Val Swanson. Pam Dinneen led discussions and activities that were enjoyable and inspirational. Spending time with others that are on a similar, yet individually unique grief journey was comforting and healing to our hurting hearts. Memorial Day is a day set aside to honor and remember our loved ones that have died. When a spouse dies, it isn’t just one day a year that we remember them, it is every day in many ways, that we remember them. A quote from a “Jewish Remembrance Prayer” says it quite well:

June Honduras Team Prayers

On June 2, a group of 21 volunteers from Southwood will be traveling to Honduras to lead five dental clinics in partnership with our sister church. Stop by Southwood Central to pick up a “Prayer Card” for the team. Knowing that people at home are praying for the volunteers strengthens and encourages them.

Summer Reading: ONE

This fall, Southwood is excited to take you on a journey through ONE—Unity in a Divided World by Deidra Riggs. This is not just a Small Group study; it’s a movement that changes how we think, how we act and how we love others well.

“So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are now a part of us as we remember them.”

``

Pick up a ONE book to read over the summer. Cost $10 available at Southwood Central

This two-day retreat helped us honor and remember those that are now gone from this time and place, but never gone from our hearts.

``

Mark September 16 on your calendar as we kick off this lifechanging journey. Hear Deidra preach on Sunday morning and gather at the ONE Festival from 5–7pm for a meal and fun family activities!

Caring 3 Tips for Everyday Praying as a Family

Family members are the biggest role models to young children. Establish habits of prayer and devotion that will help their faith develop! ff Unplug and reconnect—Create times that invite reflection. Turn off the TV and electronics to create a time to connect with each other and with God. One thing to remember is that silence is also an important part of prayer—including listening to what God may be saying to us. ff Look for God in everyday events—Make time to share what is going on each day. As part of that time, help recognize how God has been at work giving meaning to those moments and give thanks. ff Worship together as a family—We all need community. Take this opportunity for faith formation by worshipping and serving together. Allow God’s Spirit to work through your family and talk about how that feels.
