Webelos Klondike Trek Stations Note: Skills are evaluated and awarded on a patrol basis. Many answers may be found in the Webelos Handbook. 1.

Event Conditions Preparedness -‐ Maximum 30 points total Each of the boys present themselves at check in and are inspected for proper layering (3 points), headwear (3 points), gloves (2 points), footwear (3 points), rain gear (2 points), water (2 points), lunch & snack (2 points), Webelos Book (2 points) and day pack (1 point) – each boy can earn up to 20 points. The total points of all boys are divided by the total number of boys in the patrol to arrive at the patrol score. The patrol will be awarded 5 points as a group for having a “Patrol Flag” and 5 points for having a “Patrol First Aid Kit” Citizenship -‐ Maximum 20 points total + up to 5 points for Scout Spirit!!!!! a. Know the names of some of the key politicians in both Federal and State government. Know your Rights and Duties as a citizen. – 10 points b. Hands on flag etiquette – 5 points c. Learn to transmit and receive “SOS” using semaphore flags. – 5 points Outdoorsman -‐ Maximum 20 points total + up to 5 points for Scout Spirit!!!!! a. Know the Outdoor Essentials, know how to reduce the chance of getting lost and how to stay safer if you do get lost, know what to do if you think you are lost – 10 points b. Set up a dining fly using materials provided, using only two half hitches or taut line hitches for knots – 8 points for using two half hitches or 10 points for using taut line hitches. Fire Building -‐ Maximum 20 points total + up to 5 points for Scout Spirit!!!!! a. Know and explain the fire Tetrahedron – (Info available on the internet) – 3 points i. Oxygen ii. Fuel iii. Heat iv. Chain Reaction b. Know and define the three types of materials that make up Fuel -‐ (All info in Webelos Book) – 3 points i. Tinder ii. Kindling iii. Fuel

Build a fire lay – can use box, tee-‐pee or other -‐ we will supply the materials -‐ (All info in Webelos Book & BS Manual) – 5 points Light the fire lay -‐ 3 points Each patrol member toasts a marshmallow – 3 points Extinguish fire and place ashes in an ash can – 3 points
Orienteering – Maximum of 20 Total Points + up to 5 points for Scout Spirit!!!!! Each boy in the “Patrol” will be expected to the following tasks: a. Explain the difference between latitude and longitude and show them on a map. Study a blank map of the United States of America. Label your state and the states that share its boundary lines. -‐ 5 points b. Make a simple compass with a magnet and nail (they will be supplied). c. Determine how many paces your patrol takes to traverse 10 yards – 1 point d. Take and record the compass bearing to three distant locations. Record the number of paces to each location and determine the distance for each in yards – 9 points First Aid – Maximum of 20 Total Points + up to 5 points for Scout Spirit!!!!! For each task half of the “Patrol” members will play the role of the “victim” and then they will alternate for the remaining tasks. a. Demonstrate the Heimlich Maneuver and tell when it is used – 5 points b. Show how to treat for shock – 5 points c. Show what to do for these “hurry cases” i. Serious bleeding – 5 points ii. Stopped breathing – 5 points Knot Tying – Maximum of 20 Total Points + up to 5 points for Scout Spirit!!!!! Each patrol member will try and tie the required knot and describe its use: a. Square knot – 5 points b. Two Half Hitch – 5 points c. Bowline – 5 points d. Sheet Bend – 5 points

Cooking -‐-‐ Maximum of 20 Total Points + up to 5 points for Scout Spirit!!!!! a. Review the patrol method for preparing meals: water, cooks, KP. Review and demonstrate the safe way to light a Coleman stove – 5 points b. Cook a grilled cheese sandwich – 5 points c. Prepare a cup of hot chocolate – 5 points d. Eat lunch and clean up trash – 5 points Roving “Claim Jumpers” – Read below for how this works and is scored. Each patrol will be issued 5 Gold Certificates at Station 1. During the course of running the event each Patrol will be attacked by a band of “Claim Jumpers”. The band will attempt to steal the patrol’s Gold Certificates by asking questions about Scouting. The patrol will be asked 5 questions from a list of 20. For each incorrect answer the patrol will lose 1 Gold Certificate. Each patrol can only be attacked once, following their encounter the patrol will be given a pennant to hang from their patrol flag to indicate they have already been attacked. The points awarded for this event will be the number of certificates that the patrol is able to hold on to.

Awards: The best possible Skills Challenge score is 170 points, plus 35 points for Scout Spirit, and 5 points for returning all gold certificates. This gives a total possible score of 210. Awards: Ready to Lead! – 181 points and above Ready for the Outdoors! – 151 to 180 points Ready for Adventure! – 131 to 150 points
