Webelos Found in the Cub Scout Webelos Handbook (The Boy's book)

Webelos dens are for boys who are 10 years old. The Webelos den program is different from the Cub Scout den program. Emphasis shifts from home-centered activities to group-centered activities. Everything in the Webelos Scout program is more challenging than what younger boys in the pack do. Webelos Scouts can work on any or all of the 20 activity badges. The entire den works on one activity badge each month, mostly in their meetings: Physical Skills Aquanaut Athlete Fitness * Sportsman

Community Citizen * Communicator Family Member Readyman **

Mental Skills Artist Scholar Showman Traveler

Technology Craftsman Engineer Handyman Scientist

Outdoor Activity Forester Geologist Naturalist Outdoorsman **

Activity Badges The awards: small metal emblems (pins) that are EITHER pinned onto the plaid front panel of the Webelos cap, OR pinned onto the Webelos colors (the Webelos pin with three colored ribbons, pictured above)

• When a boy has completed the requirements for an activity badge, the Webelos den leader or activity badge counselor, rather than a parent, approves most of the activity badges. • Parents may fill out a questionnaire and teach skills in their areas of expertise.

Webelos Badge The award: the tan oval-shaped badge pictured right. This badge is worn on the tan uniform shirt. When the boy wears this, he no longer wears Arrow Points, Bobcat, Wolf, or Bear badges. OR the boy may wear the old diamond-shaped badge on the blue or tan uniform shirt.

• The fifth rank in Cub Scouts (after Tiger, Bobcat, Wolf, and Bear). • It takes three activity badges to earn the Webelos badge— (1) Fitness, (2) Citizen, and (3) one badge from the Mental Skills, Technology, or Outdoor group. • There are 7 other requirements to earn the badge, starting on page 49 of the Cub Scout Webelos Handbook (the boy's book).

Compass Points The award: pictured right. It is attached to the button of the right pocket. Three metal compass "points" are attached to the emblem when they are earned

• Besides earning activity badges, Webelos Scouts can earn the compass points emblem. • This emblem is awarded after a Webelos Scout has earned the Webelos badge plus four additional badges, for a total of seven. • For each four activity badges a Webelos Scout earns after that, he receives a compass point. • See the requirements on page 61 of the Cub Scout Webelos Handbook (the boy's book).

Arrow of Light This award is the only Cub Scout badge that may be worn on the Boy Scout uniform when a boy graduates into a troop.

• The highest rank in Cub Scouting is the Arrow of Light Award. • Earning this rank prepares a Webelos Scout to become a Boy Scout. • To earn the Arrow of Light, boys must complete 5 more badges in addition to the Webelos badge. These badges must include— (1) Readyman, (2) Outdoorsman, (3) one from Mental Skills, (4) one from Technology, and (5) one more of choice. • There are 6 other requirements to earn the badge, starting on page 63 of the Cub Scout Webelos Handbook (the boy's book). • When the boy earns his Arrow of Light, he is ready to become a Boy Scout. Adult leaders • Adult leaders who earned the Arrow of Light Award when they were young may also show their achievement by wearing a special square knot on their adult uniform.

Optional Awards: • Leave no Trace Awareness • World Conservation Award

Pack Meetings • Webelos may present exhibits or demonstrations of what they have been working on. • They may handle responsibilities, such as setting up chairs, ushering, etc.

Outdoors • • • •

Webelos take part in more outdoors activities than younger Cub Scouts. Webelos Scouts can earn the Leave No Trace Awareness award. Hiking: boys will go on occasional nature hikes. Overnight campouts: BSA encourages several overnight camping trips and other challenging outdoor activities for Webelos Scouts. o Parents, not just den leaders, go on these.

Uniform • BSA states that the Webelos Scout and his parent can choose to wear the blue uniform he has been wearing, or he can switch to the tan and olive green one of the Boy Scouts. • The following are worn with either uniform: o Webelos cap: purchase this at the Scout store. (It's like a ball cap.) o Neckerchief: gold, green, and red plaid with the Webelos slide. o Belt: navy blue Cub Scout belt, with optional Webelos belt buckle. Note: Academics and Sports belt loops fit only on the blue belt, which may be worn with the Webelos uniform. Belt loops do not fit on the olivecolored Boy Scout belt. Webelos who earned belt loops in previous ranks may continue to wear them. Webelos Scouts may also earn and wear belt loops.

Den Leadership • The Webelos den leader: the adult leader (21+) and assistant. • The Webelos den chief: an older Boy Scout who is trained to help the Webelos leader. • The Webelos denner: a Webelos Scout elected by the den to help the leader and chief.
