Whanganui Mountain Bike Interschool Champs Friday 12th June, 10.00am - 3.00pm

Age grades & distance:

Intermediate - Year 7 & 8 (approx. 2km) Junior - Year 9 & 10 (approx. 3km) Senior - Year 11, 12 & 13 (approx. 4km)

Individual & Team:

Individual races – Girls and boys separately. Team Relay for each age grade (intermediate, junior and senior). Mixed team of 3 students doing 1km each. The relay is a great opportunity for kids to ‘give it a go’, especially if not confident enough to enter individually. ** Students can enter individual OR team relay (not both).

Helmets are compulsory. Schools are responsible for the safety of student bikes ensuring they are safe to ride e.g. breaks/handle bars/head set. Sport Whanganui will organise and manage entries, registration, timing and results. Sport Whanganui have a limited number of bikes & helmets available to use at the event ($3 per student). Cost:

$2 Entry fee per student. $3 per bike per student for use of Sport Whanganui bikes and helmets.

Why:

Mountain biking globally, nationally and locally is a popular and growing non-traditional sport. Latest Sport NZ research shows cycling is amongst the most popular choices for recreational activities. Annual event will create links with schools and cycling clubs. It is part of a pathway for students to participate in junior cycling sport programme representing their schools. Encourage students to stay active and engage in a non-traditional sport. It improves young people’s Hauora.
