Let the Chamber connect you

President's Letter

W

Terri Kimble Chandler Chamber of Commerce

hile the New Year started with January in 2014, the month proved to be a very exciting one for Chandler and the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. January was chalked full of exciting events going on locally for both our local businesses and residents. I sincerely hope that your month was just as fun and rewarding as ours was. January was a very exciting start for 2014. The Chamber held its Economic Update Series Luncheon, where we were able to discuss the results of the recent Price Corridor Study for the City of Chandler. The luncheon was extremely helpful in delivering development news for the rapidly expanding industrial and commercial zone. Also this past month, the Chandler Chamber of Commerce was pleased to be able to celebrate several different ribbon cuttings for our local businesses: we would like to congratulate Togo’s, Joyful Yoga Studio, Funktional Fitness, as well as Speedpro Imaging. Good luck to all of these companies as they move forward into the month of February! I would like to take a moment to update you on some of the amazing things that we have coming up in the month of February here at the Chamber and in the City of Chandler. I am ecstatic in being able to inform you that on February 18th, Sandy Cowen, a national and international positioning consultant, will be joining us to speak at our Women in Business event.

2 Chandler Chamber February 2014

This exciting event will include an education salon and experts’ lounge, a business showcase, as well as lunch and the keynote speaker! Along with our monthly Women in Business event, there are also several more exciting events that I would like to share with you. On February 7th, the Chamber will be having our What’s Trending in ’14 event, as The Whale Hunters join us to inform businesses on how to turn marketing on its ear by helping you find the “ideal customer”. Next, the Chandler Chamber Lunch Club will be held at Buca di Beppo on February 17th to help support member businesses- this is a great way to network and get to know new friends! Finally, on February 20th, our Business After Business monthly evening mixer will be a great chance to meet new Chamber members as well as make business contacts. Now that we are moving into the month of February, please make sure that you take advantage of all of the resources that we have to offer you here at the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. We take great pride in ensuring that you have the best tools at hand to make sure that your business thrives from the inside out. Our Small Business Counseling Sessions have been tremendous for business owners, as well as our Small Business Development Center Academy Classes. The Chandler Chamber of Commerce website is the best way to make sure that you stay updated on all of the beneficial information that we have to offer, and we are always here to lend a helping hand to those in the business community. As always, we look forward to our future involvement with you!

Mayor's Letter Mayor Jay Tibshraeny City of Chandler

A

s a small business owner, I understand the complexities and challenges of running a company -regardless of its size. And I can appreciate that adding a wellness campaign in the workplace might seem like something that would take a back seat to more pressing issues like profits, market share and the never ending line of federal forms and regulations to keep on top of. But in reality, creating a healthier workplace can be quite simple. Providing informational resources and prescription discount cards to employees (who may not have a health plan) are just two ways to make an immediate impact. To that end, I am expanding my Health Connect initiative into the workplace in 2014. Call it my New Year’s Resolution for a healthier Chandler. To this point, we have focused our efforts on residents. Now, I hope to actively engage the business community, asking that you formally pledge to consistently strive toward healthy Financial decisions, healthy Physical activities, and healthy Mental practices.

5 Chandler Chamber February 2014

To join me in the Health Connect your business simply agrees to take our pledge. I will provide you with a certificate to place at your business and promote your efforts on a new page of the City’s website devoted specifically to this cause. I am also asking businesses to share success stories that we will post on the site. Chandler Regional Medical Center – a Dignity Health member and partner in this new venture, will also be a resource for you. Many of their resources are already listed on the site. Every action and every pledge towards Health Connect has the potential to make a striking difference in personal lives and community wellbeing. Your support will help make this happen. To join me or to learn more, please contact Dave Bigos in the Mayor’s Office at [email protected] or visit www. chandleraz.gov/connect and click on the Health Connect tab. Thank you for your interest in making Chandler a better place.

Public Policy Let Your Voice Be Heard! Mayor Jay Tibshraeny, the Chandler City Council, and the Chandler Chamber of Commerce would like to invite you to the 2014 Chandler State of the City Address on Thursday, February 6th! This event will take place at the Chandler City Hall Council Chambers at 175 S. Arizona Avenue, and will start at 6PM with a reception and light refreshments to follow. This event will also feature the naming of the Mayor’s Inaugural Neighborhood Excellence Award winners. Also join the Chandler Chamber for a very important date on February 14th, as we will be holding our Chamber Public Policy Meeting. Speaking at this event will be Farrell Quinlan, the Arizona State Director for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). Quinlan is very proactive in the support of small businesses across Arizona and has worked alongside groups such as the Arizona Contractors Association, Arizona Mortgage Lenders Association, and the West Valley Advisory Board. For the Public Policy Meeting on February 14th, Farrell Quinlan will be speaking about Representative Tom Forese’s HB 2260 – The Small Business Bill of Rights. Be sure to make your calendars for our next Public Policy Meeting on February 28th.

Mayor Jay Tibshraeny

Farrell Quinlan

Water Balls Our water balls are a unique new attraction in which riders get the opportunity to walk on water inside an air sealed hamster ball! This attraction is complete with a large rectangular pool.

Edwin McCain Edwin McCain’s voice is everywhere. At any given moment, a radio station is playing one of his songs. His songs have over 25 million plays on Myspace alone. We hear him in over 100 concert halls throughout the country every year, and that’s not even counting the performances at the Super Bowl Village and fundraisers for Habitat for Humanity, the Wildflower Camp Foundation, Kyle Petty’s Victory Junction Gang and so many more. Three Dog Night Legendary music icons, Three Dog Night, celebrate their 4th decade bringing with them some of the most astonishing statistics in popular music. In the years 1969 through 1974, no other group achieved more top 10 hits, moved more records or sold more concert tickets than Three Dog Night.Three Dog Night’s hits wind through the fabric of pop culture today, whether on the radio where they are heard day in and day out, in TV commercials or in major motion pictures. This Grammy-nominated band is not content resting on their legacy alone. A Flock of Seagulls As well-known for their bizarrely teased haircuts as their hit single “I Ran (So Far Away),” A Flock of Seagulls were one of the infamous one-hit wonders of the new wave era, growing out of the synthheavy and ruthlessly stylish new romantic movement. The group released its debut EP on Cocteau Records early in 1981, and while the record failed to chart, its lead track, “Telecommunication,” became an underground hit in Euro-disco and new wave clubs. The band signed a major-label contract with Jive by the end of the year, and their eponymous debut album appeared in the spring of 1982. Rancho Viejo This family group was born and based in Peraza, Sinaloa, Mexico in 2006. Playing bandas, rancheras, cumbias, and corridos, this unique, hit-making orchestra played its first gig in 2006 and recorded its debut album, Como Tortilla al Comal for Disa in 2007. Una Vez Mas followed in 2008 and placed higher on the Regional Mexican chart. They received several nominations for this album, including best new artist at the Univision awards. In June of 2013, the full-length Entre un Millón was released. Once more produced by Camacho, it contained songs by hit composers Espinoza Paz, Horacio Palencia, and Luciano Moon, and eventually reached not only the top of the radio charts, but also became their best-selling offering to date.

In October of last year, SRP announced it was revising its schedule for the project to provide additional time to pursue a route on the Gila River Indian Community (GRIC). The SRP project team continues to work with the GRIC, the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the Office of Appraisal Services (OAS) to pursue this route alternative. We have spent the past few months working through a complex environmental review. In addition, we are working with the GRIC government and allotees regarding the placement of the line on tribal lands. The GRIC route alternative requires successful completion of the following steps: • Environmental approval - A Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) resulting from the Environmental Assessment in conformance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process. • Business agreement with the GRIC government - A successful SRP / GRIC business agreement to allow the line to be located on GRIC land. • Right-of-way acquisition - Obtaining consent of the landowners along the proposed route. Right-of-way acquisition of tribal land requires the consent of at least 51% of the ownership of each parcel. We assure you that SRP and the GRIC are diligently engaged and collaborating on all three steps. It is our intent to submit an application for a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility (CEC) to the Arizona Corporation Commission on Aug. 1, 2014. If we are successful with the GRIC, the application will be for a route from Schrader Substation to the GRIC lands. If we are not successful with the GRIC, the CEC will include all private land route options. For project information, please visit www.azpower.org.

International Resource Seekers

erhaps there is a toy or other object you remember from your younger years that you are nostalgic for, that you would like to own again. Owen Fabert, owner of new Chandler Chamber of Commerce member International Resource Seekers, may be able to help.

The way his business works is that a customer, who for example wants an antique Radio Flyer red wagon, tells him what they are willing to pay. He attempts to find one that he can sell at that price with his profit built in. If the customer ends up not wanting it, he refunds the money back or doesn’t collect.

After about 50 years working in the pawn shop and car sales businesses, Fabert launched IRS in 1997 in California to help people find such items, long before Craigslist or eBay.

“I am hoping (chamber) members contact me about things they wanted, things they had as a kid that they would like for their kid,” he said.

Even though he now competes with those Internet sites, he says his business is still relevant.

He believes many people don’t have the time to shop for nostalgia or don’t want to haggle.

“A lot of people think you have to know where to go to find stuff. No. You have to know who to ask or who can lead you to somebody else who leads you to somebody else,” he said.

“With my history as a pawn broker and as an automobile dealer, believe me, I know how to haggle,” Fabert said.

Exchange Club

of

Chandler

he Exchange Club of Chandler was only chartered last August. But with 25 members, it is already one of, if not the largest, in Arizona, says president Owen Fabert. Others are in Phoenix, Tempe and Scottsdale.

At the national level, the Exchange Club began in 1911 in Detroit when businessmen gathered to exchange ideas. With 700 clubs and more than 21,000 members now throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, the Exchange Club claims to be the oldest service organization operating exclusively in the U.S. Fabert, who has been with Exchange Clubs since 1972, said their main goals are to promote Americanism and programs that help youths and seniors, meet community needs and prevent child abuse.

“Anybody who has an interest in any of those areas, they belong in the Exchange Club and the Exchange wants them, “ Fabert said. The Chandler club already has several projects planned. They include handing out American flags for children to wave at the March 1 Ostrich Festival Parade that is sponsored by the Chandler Chamber of Commerce, selecting a high school boy and girl who excel because of their community involvement, and honoring businesses that regularly and properly fly the American flag. The club joined the Chandler Chamber of Commerce in hopes of getting more members. Dues cost $50 a quarter and the club meets at noon Tuesdays at Coach and Willies in Downtown Chandler. Fabert, who has served as president of Exchange Clubs 10 times, said his personal passion is preventing child abuse. The national exchange club operates 75 child abuse centers in the U.S. where trained volunteers work with families to try to break cycles of abuse. “There is not an Exchange Club Center in Arizona, and I am going to do my best to remedy that,” he said.

KEO Marketing Inc./ActionCOACH Arizona W

hen Sheila Kloefkorn discovered her marketing company was giving clients more business than they could handle, she decided they needed more help. She became a business coach.

Now the business growth expert, who has an office in Ahwatukee Foothills, can offer more comprehensive services to businesses of all sizes, especially when it comes to using social media effectively. Before founding KEO Marketing in 2000, Kloefkorn was an executive at New York City based Youthstream Media Networks and iCrossing, a search and digital marketing agency. At KEO, she and her staff primarily help businesses develop online and offline marketing. But it soon became apparent that clients needed more. “Sometimes, what happens is that we actually deliver too many leads to a company. And then they say ‘Oh my gosh, we should probably stop because we can’t handle all the leads we are getting’, which is a quality problem to have,” she said. “As you scale up your marketing, you need to be able to scale up the rest of your business. And that requires coaching.” So last year Kloefkorn bought an ActionCOACH franchise and is one of half a dozen coaches in Arizona affiliated with that 20-year-old program, which operates in 29 countries. She primarily focuses on the east Valley. She offers companies a two-hour complimentary audit to start. “This is a proven formula for how to grow a business more quickly. We use a six-step model dealing everything from financial mastery to sales mastery to customer service mastery to help a company be successful,” she said. Last year she was named one of the Phoenix area’s social media leaders by the Phoenix Business Journal. She said she and her staff are known for keeping up to date on online marketing but concedes it is a challenge. Google, for example, has had more than 500 algorithm changes over the past year, which can affect how companies get prominent mention, also known as search engine optimization. Kloefkorn has identified several mistakes companies often make in social marketing: First, they don’t make it easy for someone to interact with them on their Web sites. “It’s either hard for them (customers) to find contact information, or it’s not really clear when you get to the page, what you want them to do. Do you want them to call you, to submit a form?” “They (companies) put together a Web site that says what they think about, but they don’t put themselves in the shoes of their customers and make it clear what they want them to do.” Another message she wants companies to learn is that they have to adjust their Web sites for mobile devices like smart phones and tablets. “If Web sites are not optimized for mobile, they will not achieve the same level of success they had in the past. Thirty to 40 percent of all Google searches are mobile now. So major companies really need to move with haste to mobilize their Web sites, to make sure they can be used on all types of mobile devices.”

W

hen Charles Pinto opened his first Evapeology e-cig or “vaping” lounge in Chandler last October, it was one of only about half a dozen in the Phoenix area. Now there are about 20.

They are rapidly catching on because they offer a lower nicotine alternative to smoking, Pinto said. The practice of puffing on battery-operated e-cigarettes is known as vaping because people inhale vapor instead of smoke. “It literally helps you quit,” he said. “I stopped five months ago after 40 years of being a smoker. I smoked a pack and a half a day. I literally picked one of these up, and I haven’t had a cigarette since.” He sells 60 flavors of vapor juices, and the most popular include Hawaiian Punch, Mountain Dew, and strawberry burst. They are grouped by nicotine level so users can gradually reduce their nicotine levels. His personal favorite is banana. The bottles sell for $8 to $25, and a jar is the equivalent of about $65 carton of cigarettes. Pinto has two Evapeology lounges, with Evapeology 2 at 183 E. Williams Field Road, Suite 115, Gilbert. Unlike many shops that just sell supplies and juices, his businesses or lounges where customers can sample juices. On one recent night, every chair in the Chandler business was full. “It felt like happy hour,” he said. Pinto also runs www.itxtdeals.com, a mobile marketing firm that develops apps. He joined the chamber recently because he enjoys the comradery of being with other small businesses. Pinto also has used the chamber to get referrals for glass repair, payroll, insurance and other companies. “I’ve actually used the chamber like people used to use old fashion Yellow Pages,” he said.

Desert Star Dance

A

t Desert Star Dance, the emphasis isn’t on competition and winning or pushing kids to look and dance like they are older. Director Ann Bode strives for a family friendly atmosphere where students learn dance fundamentals without burning out. “My motto is to have a balance between fun and discipline because I think you need both. All discipline and no fun is no fun for the kids. But all fun is no fun for me,” she said. Bode is a former professional dancer who toured the U.S., Europe and Africa with the dance troupe The Dancin’ Machine and, in the 1980s and 1990s, performed and starred in the Las Vegas production of “Splash.” In 2003 she started Desert Star Dance in Gilbert and has moved it twice to accommodate steady growth. Now she has about 275 students. Some of her former students now bring their children to train with the studio’s 10 instructors. Three of her instructors are former students. Bode is dismayed to see competitions like the reality Lifetime show “Dance Moms” where children are pushed to win titles in ways that Bode doesn’t believe are age appropriate. “I go to competitions, and it’s appalling what they have 11, 10, 9 and even eight year olds do and wear. They are wearing skimpy costumes. They are doing suggestive movements … Obviously, it’s what people want because they are going there. But it’s not what I want.” Her favorite part of the business is being able to spend time with children and watch them grow into adults. And her favorite time of year is producing a two-hour show in June at Mesquite High School. The studio is for three to 20-year olds and offers classes in hiphop, tap, ballet, jazz and music theater (Broadway style dancing).

Bode joined the Chandler Chamber of Commerce because she wants the studio to be more of a participant in the community and to let businesses and organizations know that students can participate in events. In fact, Desert Star Dance students will do an hour-long show at 6 p.m. March 7 during the Chandler Chamber Ostrich Festival.

Virtual Ribbon Cutting Profile Schwan’s Home Service, Inc.

K

arla Boyles knows how chaotic it can be to work fulltime and then go home and prepare a meal for the family, which in her case consists of a husband and six-year-old son.

Her personal experience makes it easier for her to sell the grocery delivery services of Schwan’s Home Service, Inc., where she works as customer service specialist. Schwan’s is a new Chamber member. The home grocery service, best known for its familiar yellow delivery trucks, is ideal for today’s busy parents who juggle jobs and kids and for whom grocery shopping is just one more time-consuming chore. It’s also ideal for the elderly or anyone else who can’t or doesn’t want to drive or face grocery stores.

Customers of Schwan’s Home Service can order groceries online, put them in a virtual cart and select a delivery date. “It’s very simple. It’s very easy,” Boyles said. “There is no contract involved, no minimum purchase, no maximum purchase. So it’s very nonthreatening. You order what you want, when you want.”

The company’s parent, The Schwan Food Co., was founded almost 62 years ago in Marshall, Minn., where it still has its headquarters. It sells its own brands of foods, including Schwan’s ice cream, Red Baron pizza, Mrs. Smith’s and Edwards desserts, in stores, restaurants and through home delivery.

Over the holidays, Boyles rode along with some drivers as they made their routes in Mesa communities that cater to older winter visitors and was impressed at the service. “A driver would pull up and he would go in and put the food away for them. He had been driving in that area for so long, he just built up a relationship. He just knew who wanted him to put the groceries away. I thought that was amazing,” Boyles said.

Ocotillo CrossFit f you’re shopping around for a fitness center to help you get fit this year, consider new Chamber member Ocotillo Crossfit.

The gym, on the southern end of the Price Corridor, offers Olympic weightlifting; gymnastics such as pushups, hand stands and ring dips, and metabolic conditioning such as running, rowing and jumping rope. It aims to train average people, not just athletes. There are no treadmills or other machines commonly found at fitness centers. The purpose is to teach people how to safely strengthen their bodies and not just let them mindlessly spend their time on treadmills. CrossFit defines crossfit as “a broad, general and inclusive fitness that is created by constantly varied, functional movements executed at high intensity.” Ocotillo Crossfit doesn’t offer personal training but training in groups of 10 to 15. Coaches instruct customers how to exercise properly, pointing out, for example, that their hips move differently than their knees.

Classes start at 5 a.m. and as late as 5:30 p.m. on various days through the week. Customers have to be at least 18 and they pay by the month, with no contracts. Rates range from $85 to $125 a month “We have showers so that our business people can work out at 5 or 6 a.m. and then go shower and go to their jobs,” said Connie Werbelow, an owner and trainer.

Keep An Eye On Safety Despite Work Comp Revenue Declines A new report from Standard & Poor’s revealed workers’ compensation insurance revenues are declining because of unemployment and economic weakness. The demand for workers’ comp in the United States fluctuates based on economic cycles and conditions in the labor market, according to Insurance and Financial Advisor. S&P noted unemployment and gross domestic product were impacting premium growth, as well as relatively unchanged wages and the increasing cost of living. Part of the uncertainty may be the result of employers’ continued concerns about the effects of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act on long-term healthcare costs. While the healthcare reform law is expected to be implemented fully in 2015, parts of it already are in effect. So what do the decreasing workers comp revenues mean to employers? While some companies may view declining workers’ compensation rates as a positive sign for cost savings, this is not necessarily the case. But being proactive to improve worker safety during periods of relatively few claims can lead to long-term savings. Employers usually consider the expenses of workers’ comp based on premiums alone. However, the cost of claims only makes up 20 percent to 30 percent of the total expenses of a workplace injury. The other indirect costs include such items as overtime, needing to bring in temporary workers, heightened training needs, increased demands on supervisors’ time, production delays and property and equipment damage and of course the time lost from the injury and the time lost by colleagues who may have witnessed the incident. Workplace injuries also can stress employees out and lead to unhappy customers if the company is left short-staffed. In short, the total costs of workplace injuries will play a much more significant role in a firm’s overall costs compared to rate increases or decreases. One consideration for employers is to avoid becoming complacent in times of low workers’ comp claims. Workplace safety should always be a top priority because reducing the number of incidents can ensure overall costs stay low. However, focusing exclusively on the frequency of accidents may not result in long-term savings. Employers may want to strive to establish a culture of workplace safety and emphasize training to minimize the risk of workers comp costs. To establish this kind of culture, employers may want to visit the CopperPoint Mutual Insurance company website, copperpoint.com, and download a free Safety Plan template and follow the step-by-step instructions to develop a safety plan that will be unique to their business.

Healthcare Problems and Solutions: This Approach Can Save You Money By Steven M. Sabatier, ND.

Problem: More Expenses, Less Results In the past 14 years insurance premiums have increased 196% while income has only increased 50% . With all that we are investing into care it would make sense that we as a nation would be getting healthier, but our data proves otherwise. An analysis of 48 most efficient healthcare countries ranks our nation 23rd for life expectancy, 46th for efficient healthcare spending, 47th for per capita costs, and we spend the most GDP per capita on healthcare (48th) . Americans today have more chronic disease than ever before. Heart and Cardiovascular Disease, Cancer, Diabetes, Arthritis and Obesity rates continue to surge upwards. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report 75% of healthcare spending is on chronic diseases . Solution: More Results, Less Expense Interestingly, the CDC also reports these chronic diseases are preventable. It is difficult to brighten a dark room by attempting to capture, kill, or remove the darkness. Adding light to the room is a more efficient approach, causing the darkness to recede naturally. Customized care focused on individuals’ health, proactively increasing the light rather than attempting to remove the darkness/disease, results in more health and better outcomes for less expense. Impacting The Bottom Line: Employers and individuals implementing this type of care as a benefit have observed a reduction in expenses, as much as 50% . Additionally, their workforce is happier, healthier, and more productive. Investing in the light kind of care saves you money and helps Our National efficiency rankings.

For the Sake of Your Business

In the last year, the Maricopa Small Business Development Center launched a partnership with the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. They offer Chandler businesses access to their Startup Labs, the SBDC Academy training programs and one on one business counseling. They have helped business owners launch new ventures, expand existing strategies and integrate technology more effectively into their business. Below are three key lessons for small businesses in Chandler: 1.) Chandler has a lot of great resources, but the important thing is knowing how to leverage each resource to their greatest advantage. It is easy to get lost in the alphabet soup of resources. Be sure you are clear on what you need instead of spending too much time worrying about what resource is the best fit. If you don’t know your business plan, then ask for help! 2.) Integrate the strengths of your community into your business strategy. Consider Chandler’s rapid and strategic growth as part of your business strategy. No business exists in a vacuum. If you operate a business in Chandler you exist in a garden. Cultivate your business according to the strengths of its environment. 3.) Businesses in Chandler have the opportunity to be strategic in their growth. With the resources and in-depth demographic information available to Chandler small business owners, they can create a strong business plan. If you already have a business but don’t have a business plan, now is a great time to create one to ensure that your business is moving forward quickly, strategically and with a clear purpose. Recently, the SBDC strategically invested additional resources to handle the overwhelming demand. Keep your eyes open for additional articles on the Maricopa Small Business Development Center and the resources offered in Chandler. For more information on Business Counseling you can email Dale Kater ([email protected]) or Jenny Herschaft ([email protected]). Also, consider joining the next SBDC Academy starting again in the Spring of 2014. These programs provide real hands on feedback on creating a business strategy, addressing common business challenges and integrating technology into your marketing and business processes.

Networking, Oh My! What’s Trending in ‘14? - A monthly miniseminar provided by Chamber member businesses held every 1st Friday of the month. Next meeting: February 7 Topic: How To Find Ideal Customers and Land Bigger Deals Come join us as The Whale Hunters demonstrate how to turn traditional marketing on its ear. Rather than waiting for leads to come in, Whale Hunters define the characteristics of what would be an “ideal customer”. Once they create that “Target Filter”, they run it through an ocean of business databases to produce a specific list of ideal companies. With the scout researching these companies, locating introductions to key executives, and watching for signs of readiness to buy, your company becomes increasingly focused on high-probability deals with exceptional customers. If you ever have trouble saying NO to a deal that you know is wrong for you, this workshop is one that you need to attend!

Chandler Chamber Lunch Club - Held on the 3rd Monday of every month, the Chandler Chamber Lunch Club aims to network while supporting a local restaurant. 2014 Schedule:
