Worship Excerpt from the Sermon Journal, Monday, August 27, 2018 Written by Pastor Tom Harrison I Belong In Community We used Acts 2:42-47 two weeks ago – but it is so important I wanted to use it again. Christians were marginalized at best and persecuted at worst in the first three centuries after the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus. They did not receive government support. Being a Christian could be a death sentence. (We will hear about today’s persecuted church on October 13 when we host a “Voice of the Martyrs” regional event at Asbury. Invite your friends!) Early Christians exercised “extreme ownership” throughout the Church. A Church father, Tertullian, said, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.” While that statement is not an ironclad truth, it is true that the sacrificial commitment to Jesus and His Church resulted in Christianity’s rapid growth. People committed their time, money and very lives to following Jesus and helping others follow Him, too. Acts 2:42-47 is not about communism, as the government was not involved in redistribution of wealth, but is a voluntary association of caring for one another.

Something to Think About: Belonging to Christian community is not optional for believers. Asbury emphasizes Adult Discipleship Communities and small groups to connect people in meaningful ways. We have classes and service opportunities where relationships can also begin. It is of the highest priority for Christians to intentionally be with other believers. Where, when and how are you doing that now? If you are in a community, who can you invite to join you?

Next week: Life’s Biggest Questions: Where Do I Belong?

Practice Hospitality 5-10-LINK Rule 5 – Refers to time Fellowship and visiting with friends is so important in church. 5 minutes before the service starts, and 5 minutes after it ends, meet someone you don’t know!

10 – Refers to space Even if you are with a group of friends, when someone you don’t know comes within 10 feet of you, reach out to them and invite them into your group!

LINK – refers to connecting When you meet someone new, immediately link them to someone else based on some common affinity (occupation, home state, interests, etc.) Each of us is part of God’s tapestry of hospitality! WEAVE kindness and thoughtfulness throughout all we do as part of Christ’s church.

W - Welcome on a personal level E - Empathize with others, truly listen! A - Acknowledge the concerns and needs of those you meet V- Verify all needs have been met E- Exit on a personal level
