A letter from our Chairman of the Board If there was ever an optimal time to be a member of the Richardson Chamber, this is it. We are reaching new milestones, the Richardson business community is growing and Richardson as a city is thriving. It’s an exciting time to be a part of this great community. The incoming development of the new KDC property at George Bush and US 75 will bring a whole new center of activity with mixed-use multi-family housing, retail options and several towers of up to 22 stories of office space for State Farm. Expect a big boost to the local economy with more than 7,000 expected new jobs. This latest announcement is a monument to the city’s commitment to live, work and play. The REDP, a joint program between the Chamber and the city, contributed to the progress our city has made with these new developments. In January, REDP also earned the Chamber our second accreditation, this time from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). REDP is one of only 32 economic development organizations worldwide to be accredited by this premier organization, and the first in North Texas. This designation makes the Richardson Chamber of Commerce only the second chamber of commerce in the nation to be dually accredited with a five-star U.S. Chamber rating and AEDO. In order to keep these accreditations, we are constantly refining our processes and offerings to provide tangible value for our members. They help us be the absolute best we can for our members. With a 67-year legacy, our members continue to give us high marks in satisfaction and rank our networking events and programs high on the list of Chamber benefits that provide value. The Annual Meeting has been recognizing volunteers for 56 years, and the New Teachers Luncheon has welcomed our RISD students for 55 years. Our Annual Meeting has featured household names like George W. Bush, Governor Rick Perry, and this year will host new U.S. Senator Ted Cruz. I’m proud that Blue Cross Blue Shield is the presenting sponsor of this highlight event for the Chamber, supporting the Richardson business community. In order to keep abreast of a busy membership and your ever-changing needs, we’re continually exploring new ways to help you drive business success. This spring the Chamber will be introducing a revamped website to help Chamber members connect with each other, promote their businesses, and better access our services.

Our goal at the Chamber is to help you drive business success, and we are proud to serve as the voice of the local Richardson business community with international reach. Thank you for your support of the Chamber and Richardson businesses over the years – the best is yet to come!

REDP continues with big wins and adds international accreditation Richardson experienced significant growth in economic development this past year. REDP logged 49 projects with more than 5,500 new or retained jobs announced and 1.9 million square feet of non-retail commercial spaced occupied. Those totals are in addition to the State Farm campus project announced in December, making it one of the most successful years in REDP history. The fact that this growth occurred in technology, financial services and healthcare sectors helps continue to diversify Richardson’s industry base and strengthen it long into the future. REDP was instrumental in working in cooperation with the City with the deal to secure KDC’s $1.5 billion mixed-use development at the George Bush Turnpike and US75. When completed, the State Farm office campus will be the largest built in the entire DFW Metroplex in more than 20 years. Other impactful projects included: the relocation of Safety-Kleen’s headquarters from Plano’s Legacy Business Park; Genpact’s selection of Richardson for its first scratch-built business process management operation; Inogen’s relocation from California; and data center additions by Digital Realty and Stream Data Centers. In addition, 20 new restaurants opened in Richardson. “This level of growth does not occur without strategic planning and a strong commitment to the long-term health and prosperity of Richardson,” said Ron Taylor, 2012 chairman of the board of the Richardson Chamber of Commerce from BlueCross BlueShield of Texas. “The City of Richardson has constructed a business-friendly ecosystem that seeks out future growth industries and opportunities. Here at the Chamber and the REDP, we’re thankful to be able to cooperatively work with the City to create an environment where businesses can thrive.” Recently the REDP received the Accredited Economic Development Organization (AEDO) accreditation, issued by the International Economic Development Council. The REDP is the first organization in North Texas to receive the honor. This accreditation, when combined with the Richardson Chamber’s five-star accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, makes Richardson only the second city in the nation to have their Chamber and Economic Development entity accredited at this level. As an added offering to businesses with larger employee bases, REDP also launched a new human resources committee. The committee meets quarterly and is open to HR professionals at the Chamber’s member companies. The meetings encourage peer networking, sharing best practices and discussing topics of shared interest.

Businesses growing and Chamber helping them drive their success In a autumn member survey performed by the Chamber and conducted by business consulting firm ExperiPro, 55 percent of respondents from Richardson businesses said their business has grown during the last year, with 46 percent saying they have hired in the last six months. The survey also showed a significant amount of growth in the small business sector, which is promising. Opportunities for networking, resources about doing business more efficiently and supporting the Richardson community were the three highest rated priorities. “Small businesses have many opportunities in Richardson with the influx of daytime professional workers and a community built on long-term relationships,” said Bill Sproull, president and CEO of the Richardson Chamber of Commerce. “We will continue supporting Richardson businesses by helping them find ways to grow, network and operate more efficiently. Our leadership and educational programs support growth of businesses from a spectrum of sizes, industries and business needs.” When it came to satisfaction, 83 percent of members said they were satisfied with the Chamber, and 81 percent said they would recommend Richardson Chamber membership to others. “We are impressed by what we saw in the Richardson Chamber survey. Their member satisfaction was high compared to other organizations we have studied, and the survey gave them some very clear feedback on where they should concentrate their efforts to support local businesses,” said David Slatter, president of ExperiPro. Slatter was also delighted to see the high levels of engagement that Chamber members had in their support and participation in local events organized for the Richardson business community.

Chamber makes business voice heard during Texas’ legislative session The Chamber’s Public Policy committee worked in 2012 to develop a Texas state legislative agenda focused on the needs of businesses in our community. Areas of interest are public education, economic development, water resources, transportation and air quality, higher education, energy adequacy and reliability, healthcare and local government. Each of these complex issues is addressed with specific priorities. A delegation of local citizens and business people from Richardson traveled to Austin in March 2013 for the Chamber’s Legislative Day activities that happen every 2 years when the legislature is in session. The event gives Richardson delegates the opportunity to meet one-on-one with elected officials and be fully briefed about the issues facing the state and legislature. The Chamber used e-mail communication and its advocacy website to communicate with members about candidates and critical issues during the election year. Legislative alerts continue to go out with updates during the Texas legislative session. The Chamber continues to provide forums for candidates, elected officials, and government insiders to speak. In February 2012, the Chamber hosted a candidate forum for Texas State Senate District 8 and the Republican primary race for Texas House District 67. The forum gave candidates an opportunity to communicate where they stand on issues critical to North Texas. A similar forum is planned before the Richardson Mayoral election in May. Texas Speaker of the House Joe Straus spoke at the Signature luncheon in May about what happened in the 2011 legislative session and what to expect in the current year. During the 2012 Annual Meeting, Andrew Card, President George W. Bush’s chief of staff, riveted the audience by retelling his story of 9-11. For the current year’s Annual Meeting, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz is set to make his first major public appearance in North Texas since being sworn in.

Events hit high points with topics, attendance and high-profile speakers Our Signature Luncheon series featured Dan Garton, CEO of American Eagle Airlines; Norm Hitzges, sports radio host; a salute and roast for retiring Richardson city manager Bill Keffler; executives from several local banks about current financial trends; and Texas Instruments CEO Rich Templeton. The Signature Luncheon series experienced a 56 percent increase in attendance over the previous year, hosting nearly 800 attendees. Sponsors for 2012 were Reliant Energy and the Richardson Civic Center. The 400-plus attendees of the Chamber’s Annual Meeting were enthralled by former Bush Chief of Staff Andrew Card as he related his perspective of the days around 9-11. The acting dean of the Bush School of Public Policy gave his perspective of the role of the president, chief of staff and his own personal experience. Volunteers of the year honored included a range of members whose contributions impacted the Chamber and ultimately the Richardson business community’s success. Winners included: Stan Bradshaw of The Bradshaw Group for volunteer of the year, Executive Press for small business of the year, Dianna Gell of Clearly Creative Promotions for rookie of the year, EarlyNet as the committee of the year (tri-chairs Sandra Ward, Marilyn Castleberry and George Simons) and Bob Krombach of Preferred Office Products as ambassador of the year. The Annual Meeting’s title sponsor was Avnet. The Business & Industry Award Luncheon honored outstanding Richardson-area businesses and organizations for their many contributions to the economic vitality and community involvement for the City of Richardson. Congrats to Stream Data Center, Cisco Systems, Fujitsu Network Communications, Hitachi Communications, Safety-Kleen, The Richardson Symphony and Polytronix. Special thanks to sponsor BB&T. The 25th anniversary of the Golf Classic held in October was sold-out with 144 golfers. The annual Golf Classic was blessed by the golf gods with bright skies, green grass and beautiful weather. Owens a division of Bob Evans Foods was sponsor of the event. Richardson Young Professionals (RYP), a social and service-oriented group, gets together at least once a month. Already in 2013 is a meet-and-greet happy hour for Richardson election candidates and a service project benefiting the Methodist Richardson Cancer Center. The Women in Leadership (WIL) group continues to grow its network of influential women business leaders. The group encourages, inspires and develops women as they grow into their roles as business leaders in our community. The group hosts quarterly luncheons aimed at building leaders and networking events to broaden business contacts. The 2012 theme was “Entrepreneurship: How to Build a Business,” and the 2013 theme is “Keeping Current in a World of Rapid Change.” Attendance at the luncheons increased by 33 percent over 2011.

“I am overwhelmed by this honor, especially given the stature of this community where there are so many notable contributors to Richardson’s successes. Any accomplishments I have achieved as City Manager can only be attributed to the work of many outstanding, servant-minded people -- my City co-workers, our City Council members and a very dedicated Richardson community.” Bill Keffler, former Richardson City Manager and Citizen of the Year (with 2011 COY Gary Slagel)

A low-cost way that businesses stay up-to-date about efficiency and effectiveness in their business practices is through the Chamber’s brown-bag series, which gives tactical advice to deal with every day issues. Held on six occasions throughout the calendar year, the brown-bag series had 155 people attend the luncheons in 2012 on a variety of topics ranging from how to use social media in your business to improving customer service.

Local education and workplace development encouraged by Chamber Community support and development of Richardson’s future continue to be priorities for the Chamber. Using its network and resources, Chamber members honored RISD teachers and worked to further educate the leaders of tomorrow’s Richardson. The 55th Annual New Teacher’s Luncheon, which has been welcoming teachers for more than a half a century, honored elementary teachers at breakfast and junior and senior high teachers at lunch, in order to accommodate the 425 new teachers this year. More than 30 local Richardson companies helped sponsor the event by paying for teachers’ lunch. The Education & Workforce Committee continues to campaign to have Chamber members become more involved in education in Richardson, which impacts our emerging workforce. Plans for 2013 include an education clearinghouse for businesses to connect with schools. Leadership Richardson, the Chamber’s community leadership development program, is in its 28th year. Each year up to 40 people who live and/or work in Richardson or the Richardson ISD study the dynamics of the Richardson community and enhance their community leadership skills for engagement in positions of leadership throughout the community.

Leadership Richardson class members have included city council members, school superintendents, police chiefs, ministers, bank presidents and hospital presidents.

Member services help members connect and market their business Chamber programs and events proved to be of significant value to members, who had hundreds of opportunities to generate business leads, network, learn and grow professionally. Networking continues to be a weekly priority for the Richardson Chamber. EarlyNet, our weekly networking breakfast, set a new record for attendance and referrals in 2012. Attendees documented more than 1200 business referrals during the year. In addition, the monthly PM Connections event is having its best average attendance in years at 60 people per event, as it circulates to top Chamber businesses and welcomes businesses throughout the spectrum of industries. The Richardson Business Trade Show enabled nearly 80 exhibitors and more than 600 attendees to meet face-to-face with potential vendors for their company or home needs. It gathers the best of Richardson-area businesses in one location for a low-pressure, half-day meet-and-greet with residents and other business leaders/decision makers. Thanks to presenting sponsor BB&T for 2012 and 2013. The Chamber’s program for retailers, Local Proud, consists of a website with a search engine of local businesses, owned and operated by local citizens. The Richardson community can find local restaurants, retailers, service providers, attractions and more. The program has established monthly themes in 2013 to generate activity around Mother’s Day, back-to-school, and holiday shopping. For restaurants, the Chamber runs the program Dine Smart, Dine Local with the Richardson Convention & Visitors Bureau to increase awareness of and business at local restaurants. The program drives traffic to these restaurants by providing special offers and discounts to those who live and work in Richardson. Currently 55 restaurants are gaining exposure in the weekly email to an extensive database of subscribers. The Chamber is a welcoming place for new businesses and members of the Chamber. New businesses or businesses hosting a re-opening can request a ribbon cutting. The Chamber’s dedicated group of Ambassadors and many members of Richardson’s service-oriented City Council show up to encourage and support the new business. In 2012, the Chamber sponsored 33 ribbon cuttings, averaging almost three every month.

International Business gains traction with early wins and deeper connections in Asia, Europe, and Mexico Positive international additions are expected in 2013 as a result of the efforts of the Mayor’s Office of International Business. Michael Skelton, its director, has been building local and overseas networks for economic development and creating a pipeline of potential foreign companies who have expressed interest in establishing a U.S. office. Skelton is currently working with several small to mid-sized foreign companies to finalize their location in Richardson during the coming year. February included a whirlwind development trip specifically targeting technology companies in France and Spain, including the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona. In 2012, the Mayor’s Office of International Business was focused on establishing and building relationships with economic development organizations, venture capitalists, universities, start-up incubators/accelerators and early stage technology companies in overseas countries. Finland and Sweden are among the countries with organizations interested in fostering future joint economic development projects. Several different Chinese delegations visited Richardson. A delegation from Pengzhou, China, signed a “Friendly City” agreement with Richardson and a “Friendly Chamber” agreement between Pengzhou‘s Association of Industry and Commerce and the Richardson Chamber of Commerce to foster joint economic development. The Chamber also hosted a reception for a group of 50 high net-worth Chinese investors. Richardson promoted three local real-estate-firm investment opportunities to the Chinese investors. UT Dallas student ambassadors served as translators for the event. Richardson was one of 15 DFW communities that hosted visitors from Japan in conjunction with the Japan American Grassroots Summit. More than 100 volunteers helped organize and participate in various events for Japanese visitors. Seventeen Japanese guests stayed with 13 Richardson families. A true win coming from our neighbor to the south was Intech, a telecom software company from Mexico. The company rented office space in Richardson after being introduced to the area through Skelton’s contact with the local Ecuadorian Consul.
