Who Is God? What Is Man? Sanctity of Human Life Sunday Psalm 8 Stuart McCray, Associate Pastor January 21, 2018

Psalm 8 is a hymn of praise, proclaiming the awesome majesty of God! And as the hymn unfolds, God’s majesty is displayed here on earth through His supreme creation, human beings. Therefore, the implication that flows out from this is that one cannot worship the majesty of God, while also unjustly destroying His supreme creation. Structure of the Psalm Chorus

Stanza 1

1a O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! 1b You have set your glory above the heavens. 2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.

Stanza 2

3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? 5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, 7 all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

Chorus

9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

1. Chorus: verses 1a, 9 – Praise the majesty of God.

2. Stanza 1: verses 1b-2 – Praise the majesty of God, for He establishes strength through babies to silence His enemies.

3. Stanza 2: verses 3-8 – Praise the majesty of God, for He entrusts dominion over His creation to humans who are created in His image.

Questions to Consider 1. What are some lingering questions you have about the topic of the Sanctity of Human Life (to include all life, even abortion)? 2. When you consider the topic of the Sanctity of Human Life (to include all life, even abortion), do you tend to first think in political categories or theological categories? 3. What does it mean to be created in the image of God? 4. Why is it critical, if we’re to have a right view of the dignity of man, to see that man’s dignity is not something earned or achieved, but rather is something that’s bestowed on mankind from their Creator? 5. The sanctity of human life and/or the dignity of man is something that runs like a thread through the pages of Scripture. Where else might you go, that wasn’t looked at in this sermon, to fill out this Biblical truth? 6. What are ways that you can personally take up the cause for protection and advocacy of the sanctity of all human life?
