Who’s going to Berlin?

Blue Star Contemporary announces 2016/2017 Berlin Residents

(SAN ANTONIO, Texas) – March 9, 2016 – Blue Star Contemporary is pleased to announce the 2016/2017 Blue Star Berlin Residents–Jesse Amado, Christie Blizard, Joey Fauerso, and Anne Wallace. Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Angelika Jansen-Brown, Blue Star Contemporary awarded its first residency opportunity in 2013 and acts as one of the only US partners with Künstlerhaus Bethanien. This year Blue Star has awarded Jesse Amado, Christie Blizard, Joey Fauerso, and Anne Wallace the opportunity to live and conduct their studio practice in one of the world's most significant art centers, Berlin, Germany. While in residence, the artists are given a studio and living space, as well as access to workshops; exhibition opportunities; and studio visits with international curators; and inclusion in BE Magazine, which is published by Künstlerhaus Bethanien and puts the artists’ work into critical perspective while addressing topical issues of the international art scene. Following the completion of each artist’s residency, an exhibition of artwork inspired by his or her experience will occur at Blue Star Contemporary. Dedicated to the advancement of contemporary visual arts, the Künstlerhaus Bethanien aims to establish a critical dialogue between artists from various backgrounds and disciplines, and the public-at-large. “My colleagues and I worked for a long time to establish this partnership with the Künstlerhaus Bethanien—years before the official start of the Blue Star Berlin Residency Program in 2013—and it is so gratifying to see the results. I knew the artists selected to participate would benefit greatly, and they have, so much more than we dared to anticipate. This year's artists, like their 12 predecessors, will expand their horizons, gain professional expertise, and grow their networks on an international scale. They serve as ambassadors of San Antonio while in Berlin, one of the most important homes for contemporary art in the world.” -Dr. Angelika Jansen-Brown

About Jesse Amado Known for art that is conceptually based and highly formal, Jesse Amado's practice occupies the liminal space that hovers between life and art. Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, he received his BA in English from the University of Texas at Austin and his BFA and MFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Amado resided in both Texas and New York City for many years, but has now chosen to live in his hometown full time. About Christie Blizard Christie Blizard is an Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She works in a variety of media merging painting and drawing with social engagement practices. Since 2006, she has been featured in over 70 national and international art exhibitions. About Joey Fauerso Joey Fauerso is an artist and Associate Professor of Art at Texas State University. Her paintings and videos have been exhibited nationally and internationally with recent shows at the Centro Cultural Border in Mexico City, and the David Shelton Gallery in Houston Texas. Fauerso has been the recipient of numerous grants and residencies and is currently participating in the Open Sessions program at The Drawing Center in New York City. She lives in San Antonio with her husband Riley, and their sons Brendan and Paul. About Anne Wallace Anne Wallace's videos, installations, and public projects draw on both human rights and art practices. They are often community based, incorporating multiple perspectives on culture and history through the use of personal narrative. Many of her works engage the border and the American West, examining issues of representation, authenticity, and myth. From carving salvaged 'street trees' with a chainsaw to the urban park commissions, the relationship between people and the environment has been an underlying theme in her work. Blue Star Contemporary’s 2016-17 Berlin Residency program is generously supported by City of San Antonio Department for Culture and Creative Development, the Capital Group Companies Charitable Fund, and 1010 S. Flores Lofts and 1111 Austin Highway Lofts.
