“Why I Believe In Absolutes” John 8:31-36

Oct 28, 2018

Today, old values are being tossed aside by people who say there are no absolutes. In an intensive study of the changing religious views of Americans, the Barna Research Group in California reveals that the basic beliefs and opinions considered important are changing radically. This trend is in sharp contrast to the Word of God that will not change. To believe in the Bible we must believe in absolutes. According to the most recent studies, currently 62% of Americans believe all truth is relative. And among the ages of 18-25 year old the figures rise from 62% to 74%. A hundred years ago 99% of Americans would have believed there were absolutes.

I) Truth Is Revealed By God: A) Absolute truth is revealed by an absolute God. B) Albert Einstein made one thing clear about relativity. It deals with matter, mass, speed, light, and motion. Relativity refers only to the realm of physics, not ethics. C) The Word of God is truth. The scriptures are revelations of that perfect absolute truth of God.

“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” John 17:17 “For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” Matthew 5:18

II) Truth Is Accepted By Faith: A) Science deals with probabilities. Anything we think is true now, twenty years from now may be shown to be false. But truth revealed by God can be known for certain by faith. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. I John 5:13 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. John 17:3 B) The word faith (pistis) can mean belief, trust, fidelity, firm persuasion, or firm conviction. Biblical faith is not belief in self or man, but in God. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 C) The word elengchos means “proof.” Here it is used in the sense of “entire persuasion,” so complete that further proof is needless.

III) Truth Is Verified By Experience: A) Only truth can set a person free. B) Jesus was talking about a different bondage. What is happening today in America? Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.” John 8:34

C) The fish who decides he doesn’t like the restrictions of water may leap upon the shore, but his liberty will soon turn into death.
