Wildcats overwhelm Pats From Herald Staff Reports

The first game in the new era of Heritage Hills football didn’t play out the way the Patriots imagined. They’re not PREP used to dealFOOTBALL ing with large Wildcats.......... 34 losses, such as Patriots.............. 7 the 34-7 defeat Class 2A No. 2 Evansville Mater Dei handed the Class No. 7 Patriots on Friday night at the Reitz Bowl in the debut of first-year Heritage Hills

coach Todd Wilkerson. Mater Dei scored on its opening possession, constructing a seven-play, 80-yard drive, and benefited from five Patriot Konerding turnovers. For Heritage Hills (0-1), Gabe Konerding scored on a 78-yard

run after defending Class 2A state finalist Mater Dei (1-0) scored the first 34 points. Wildcat quarterback Jace Hartz finished 11-for-20 for 209 yards and added a team-high 54 rushing yards. No other statistics were available for the Patriots. Heritage Hills will look to recover next Friday in its first home game of the season as the Patriots entertain Tell City (0-1) in their Pocket Athletic Conference opener.

later. “We felt like we were playing well,” Ahrens said of the halftime message. “We just felt like our kids were playing hard and we just needed to go out and clean up some of the mistakes.” On the first play of the second half, Jasper quarterback Nolan Ahrens completed a 9-yard pass to Jesse Schmitt, one of the few designed passes on first down. Ahrens also looked completely comfortable on the play. He wasn’t completely held back, attempting passes over the middle, including a few beyond 20 yards. In his varsity debut, the sophomore finished 5-of-12 for 38 yards. He also didn’t commit any turnovers and gained a few extra yards when he drew Memorial offside with a hard count when Jasper faced third-and-goal from the 4. Traylor barreled in from 2 yards out the next play. Jasper also started that drive deep inside Memorial territory, on the 20-yard line. With the Tigers facing fourth down near midfield, the snap sailed over the punter’s

head. When Jeremy King tried scrambling to his right to either attempt a pass or a rushed punt, Austin Alles ran him down, pushing him out of bounds. Tony Ahrens said he was proud of the way his guys responded to all the challenges they faced, talking like a coach who was more than a little glad to see some early spunk out of a team he thinks has the potential to have a memorable season. Chances are Jasper won’t need to overcome so many self-induced obstacles the rest of the year to win games. But if they do, they have a plan for that, too. “The biggest thing that’s great for us, is a sign of a good team is the amount of adversity they overcame,” Ahrens said. “We had a whole lot of opportunities to seal the game off and things just happened. We just kind of kept overcoming things and kids just played hard throughout and came out winners.”

that became evident in the first half. The Titans scored on their first four possessions — three runs and a pass — followed by a 30-yard interception touchdown with 7:39 left before halftime. The pick-six was the Titans’ second touchdown in under two minutes. Going into the half, the Rangers trailed 42-3 — thanks to Ranger kicker Dakota Begle’s 34-yard field goal in the first quarter — and Fuhs tried refocusing his squad by figuratively wiping the slate clean entering the final 24 minutes. And though it came midway through the final quarter with the Titans’ lead resting at 53 points, Forest Park got its drive — a 12play, 73-yarder that consumed over 61⁄2 minutes of clock and featured consecutive Bayer passes for 19 and 11 yards. Schnell capped it with a 2-yard plunge for a touchdown, generating some promise going into next week’s game against Perry Central. “That’s what we said at halftime. This game is 0-0. And we’re going to come out and win the second half. And that was our goal at

halftime,” Fuhs said. “But yeah, that was a big confidence booster driving the ball down the field and scoring. But like I said, we were driving the ball down the field the whole game and it would be one thing or it would be another thing. But I think it was good. At least they were clapping and they were excited and cheering there at the end. I think that was big.” Despite the loss, Hart doesn’t see Forest Park as down and out. “They’re banged up right now,” Hart said. “And that’s always tough when you go into your first game of the season. I think they have a chance to be a good ballclub. We got up and got the momentum and it was just hard for them to get back. And I think they’re a lot better than what they showed tonight and Coach Fuhs will continue to get this team better because I know he’s a really good football coach. “(He’s) going to do great things here.”

Cats (Concluded from Page 20) Jasper racked up 257 rushing yards on 52 carries, including a game-high 192 yards from Cole Sermersheim, who ripped off a 28yard gain on the play right before Traylor’s tiebreaking score early in the fourth quarter. “You could tell our linemen were rolling them off the ball a little bit,” Gobert said. “They were getting some big holes for Sermersheim, who ran really hard tonight. You could tell we were in better shape.” Memorial tied the contest with a Dane Hurley 1-yard run with around five minutes left before halftime. The Tigers traveled 72 yards on the drive, but outside of that possession, registered just one first down and never advanced past midfield before halftime. Adam Goepfrich, who kicked all three extra points, also forced a first-half fumble, which Betz recovered. Jasper started its ensuing drive on the Tiger 13-yard line, and Gobert scored three plays

Rangers (Concluded from Page 21) fumble (one). A barrier toward progress. “We would get one step forward and two steps back pretty much every time,” Voegerl said. “We’d get a nice 5-yard gain or 4-yard gain and then get either an interception, fumble or offsides, and you just can’t win games like that.” Fuhs thought on nearly the exact wavelength. “We had a lot of yards on offense, but it was like one step forward and two steps back every time,” he said. “All of our running backs ran well ... but we’d make big plays and then there would be a penalty. Big plays, fumble. Big plays, interception. ... We talked before the game, too. It’s the team that makes the fewest mistakes and less penalties and the least turnovers that’s going to win. And it was obviously them.” With injured linemen Dylan Popplewell and Austin Egloff still absent, facing an rushing attack of Gibson Southern’s pedigree in the first week was inopportune, and
