Jasper’s Jacob Lents, left, and Sam DeWitt sandwiched Vincennes Lincoln’s Spencer Corrona on Friday at Inman Field. Lents booted a pair of 33-yard field goals, but Lincoln accelerated to a 33-20 victory as Corrona was one of two Alices with six or more receptions.

Wildcats (Concluded from Page 16) them. It was just two plays right now that I wish I definitely had back.” Nordhoff acknowledged that the Cats also felt good about bottling Lincoln’s Caden Kotter in the first half before the 6-foot-5 receiving threat snagged six of his seven catches in the second half — including both fourth-quarter touchdown receptions from Toole, whose 14 pass completions totaled 247 yards. Moments earlier when the game was still tied, the Wildcats appeared to have momentum cornered when they spilled Toole for a 1-yard loss on what would’ve made for a punting situation on fourth down. But on the play, Jasper was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct flag for extracurriculars after the takedown on Toole. Lincoln (4-1, 3-0) wound up marching 75 yards and scoring. Jasper managed just 31 total yards and

was 2-of-12 passing in the fourth quarter. “Definitely a big blow to the chest right there,” Nordhoff said. “We had a lot of penalties in the game that were drive-changing penalties, and you just can’t do that, you can’t have that kind of stuff,” Ahrens said. Two holding penalties stunted Jasper’s progress in the latter stages of a 75-yard series when the Cats had to settle on Jacob Lents’ 33-yard field goal, one of two on the night he drilled from that distance. The second one didn’t travel with traditional spin and barely had enough clearance above the uprights, but all Jasper cared about was it leveled the game at 20-all, even if it didn’t come with any style points. “When he was jogging off the field, I asked him if he was passing that ball to somebody, because it was kicking like a straight spiral through there,” Nordhoff joked of Lents, who’s also perfect on 16 PAT kicks this season. “No, I mean he’s done that a few times this year, he’s gotten lucky on some of them, but they’re going through

the uprights. Nobody’s going to complain about it.” The thing that did weigh on Jasper’s mind was a potential missed opportunity, as “we knew this was probably the Big Eight conference decider, winner of this game probably wins conference,” Nordhoff said. While the Alices partied in the distance on their field along with their student section, Ahrens was more in the mood of issuing challenges and reminders before the next chance to rebound this Friday, at home against Princeton (2-3, 2-0). “When you get in those situations you’ve really got to be a tight team and understand that the only way that you’re going to be good is everybody’s got to pull their load, and I’m not sure that all of us pulled our load to the point where we could have won this game,” Ahrens said. “I think there’s effort issues and there’s mental issues, and I think we got caught up in sort of a buzzsaw here and we didn’t shut it down. This is one where you’re got to have the courage to get out of here, go home and learn from it.”

ured out on offense. They were doing some things that we couldn’t stop.” Fuhs used defensive lines of five, six and seven guys trying Hamilton to clot the Chargers’ damage, but to no avail. Ranger center Andrew Schuler said he and his teammates “flatout didn’t react” to what the Chargers were throwing at them. “Coach showed us all the plays,” he said. “It just comes down to not firing off the ball, not staying low, not getting after it as much as we should’ve.” Schuler feels he helps hold together Forest Park’s defensive and offensive lines in difficult times — such as those they were faced with Friday. “(We need to) get as much enthusiasm and work as much as possible next week,” he said. “We can’t take it easy on a single play.” Despite the setback, Fuhs said he was encouraged by some of the Rangers’ offensive progress. Fleck rushed for two second-quarter scores and connected with Jared Schipp and Sam Englert on touch-

down passes of 22 and 30 yards in the second half. But the fumbled snap returned by Fields, as well as another lost Ranger fumble on their first offensive play of the third quarter, stifled Forest Park at key moments. On a night that started with ample school spirit, celebratory homecoming banners that hung from the front of the press box were cut down with more than six minutes to play. They fell to a heap below — a feeling the Rangers could relate to once that time ticked off the clock. “We came into this game expecting to win tonight, and getting beat like this is really an eye-opener,” Hamilton said. “I feel like we need to push harder in practice and we’ll come out a better team.”

Rangers (Concluded from Page 17) That was especially true of Alvey, whose scoring runs of 3 and 13 yards in the third quarter pushed Pike Central’s lead from 26-14 to 40-14. He finished with 252 yards running and added a 9-yard touchdown pass to O’Neal just before halftime. “When they went to that stack offense, you just had to read those stat guys,” Fuhs said. “If they came straight at you, the quarterback was coming at you. They run across the formation, it was a quarterback counter. If the stack guys run outside, it was a jet sweep. We just didn’t stop it.” For as much success as Alvey had, however, Fields may have had the biggest impact. He scampered over the goal line on runs of 13, 3 and 1 in the first, second and fourth quarters, respectively. He also recovered a fumbled Forest Park snap on the Pike Central 5-yard line late in the first half, returning it 95 yards for a score and a 20-8 Charger advantage. The Rangers pulled within 2014 about two minutes later, but the emotional shift caused by Fields’ fumble return had some staying power. “Huge momentum changer,” Mattingly said of the scoop and score. “They were getting it fig-
