SCOREBOARD

By The Associated Press ST. LOUIS — Paul DeJong had two doubles with three RBIs and Randal Grichuk triMLB pled and drove in two as the surging St. Louis Cardinals held off the Atlanta Braves 8-5 on Friday night to win their season-high seventh straight game. Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright (12-5) went five innings and retired the final eight batters he saw after pitching out of a noout, bases loaded jam in the third. Wainwright helped himself get out of the jam with just one run scored by finishing a 3-6-1 double play, the third double play turned by the Cardinals in the first three innings. Kolten Wong, Matt Carpenter and DeJong each had an RBI double as the Cardinals sent nine batters to the plate in a four-run second inning. Grichuk started a two-run rally in the third with an RBI triple and scored on a single by Wainwright. DeJong’s two-run double in the eighth gave the Cardinals breathing room. John Brebbia, Zach Duke and Matt Bowman, who earned his second save in four tries, pitched scoreless relief for St. Louis. Duke’s strikeout of Freddie Freeman to end the seventh was pivotal as Freeman entered the game 5 for 6 with two homers against Duke. Cubs 8, Diamondbacks 3: John Lackey won his fifth straight start and the Chicago Cubs opened a weekend series in the desert with a victory. Kyle Schwarber and Alex Avila hit consecutive home runs off Taijuan Walker (6-6) to start the sixth inning after David Peralta’s tworun shot had cut the Cubs’ lead to 3-2 in the fifth. Paul Goldschmidt’s solo homer with one out in the sixth ended Lackey’s night. Lackey (10-9) allowed three runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings, struck out seven and walked three, throwing just 85 pitches. He has won five in a row for the third time in his career but first since June 6-29, 2008. The Cubs, who lost two of three at home to the Diamondbacks just over a week ago, won for just their third time in nine games to stay a game up on St. Louis in the NL Central. Reds 11, Brewers 10: Zack Cozart and Eugenio Suarez had three hits and drove in two runs each, as the Cincinnati Reds built an early eight-run lead and then held off a late rally from Milwaukee. The Reds built a 10-2 lead through four innings, but the Brewers scored seven times in the sixth to make it a game. A solo home run by Tucker Barnhart in the seventh increased Cincinnati’s lead to 11-9. After stranding the bases loaded against Raisel Iglesias in the eighth, Jonathan Villar made it 11-10 with a home run off the Reds closer with one out in the ninth. Eric Thames followed with a single, but Iglesias retired Ryan Braun and Travis Shaw to finish off his 20th save. Reds starter Homer Bailey (46) bounced back from allowing 10 runs over 3 1/3 innings in a loss to St. Louis on Aug. 6 to hold the Brewers to two runs despite five walks in five innings.
