Christmas in Lincoln White House was a low-key affair

By Tom Emery

Christmas in the White House in the 1860s was a far cry from the ornate displays of decor familiar to Americans today. During the Lincoln administration, the holiday was celebrated in low-key fashion. Celebrations of Christmas in those years were far less prevalent than today, and the White House was no exception. The first indoor Christmas tree at the White House did not appear until 1889, and the first outdoor tree lighting was not held until 1923. For President Lincoln, December 25 was often a working day. Those who did celebrate Christmas in the era often viewed the day as a social occasion. As President-elect in 1860, Lincoln was consumed with a steady stream of visitors at his Springfield home. Reporter Henry Villard, one of many seeking Lincoln’s attention, wrote that “a party of St. Louis gentlemen all but monopolized the attention of the President-elect.” Still, Lincoln found the time for a little shopping. On Christmas Eve 1860, he purchased some “yard goods,” or fabric, for his wife, as well as eleven handkerchiefs for gifts. In Lincoln’s first White House Christmas in 1861, much of December 25 was spent in dealing with the Trent affair, a diplomatic crisis with England and France. The evening, however, was spent in celebration, as the Lincolns welcomed many family and friends from Illinois and Kentucky at a Christmas dinner. “Christmas for the Presidents of the mid-19th century was generally a quiet time,” said Dr. William Bushong, (Continued on page 12)

Potential Household Hazards The holidays are a wonderful time of sharing with family and friends. This is also a time when you may have young visitors, so you need to be aware of potential dangers that may exist in your home. The average household is full of hazardous substances so before your guests arrive, take time to look around your home and lock up or relocate items that may be dangerous in the wrong hands. If you suspect someone has inhaled or ingested a poisonous substance, call the Kansas Poison Center at 1-800-332-6633. Be sure to have the container nearby to ensure that you are providing the correct information to Poison Center personnel.

Americans celebrated Christmas in 1776 with victory at Trenton By Tom Emery The year 1776 is legendary in American history, as the Declaration of Independence was adopted by Congress on July 4. Christmas in 1776 was a momentous occasion as well. On Christmas night, Gen. George Washington made his famous crossing of the Delaware River in preparation for an attack on Trenton, N.J. the following day. The battle was a sweeping victory for the Americans to close out the year in grand fashion. Though history remembers 1776 for the Declaration (whose date was really July 2, not the Fourth), the year was actually a difficult one for the Continental cause. Washington had been driven out of the pivotal stronghold of New York City that autumn,

and barely escaped the pursing British. By winter, his underfed, poorly supplied army languished in frigid conditions in camp in Pennsylvania. Washington also anxiously awaited December 31, when many of his men’s service terms were scheduled to expire, and he feared a loss of much of his army. Across the river, the city of Trenton was held by a brigade of “Hessians,” German mercenaries who fought against the Americans in the Revolution. The brigade commander, Col. Johann Rall, ignored orders to build fortifications and direct scouting parties, although British spies in Washington’s army had advised of a possible attack. Rall, who never shied from alcohol, (Continued on page 15)

The Covered Dish: Breakfast Stromboli It feels like the calendar has played a little trick with my mind. First it was the first day of December and now; it’s the last few days before Christmas! How has it passed so quickly? At this writing I don’t have presents wrapped either! Wow this energizer bunny better get her batteries re-charged! With the push of the busy season and family events I like to present recipes that are easy to accomplish. I’ve run Stromboli recipes before, but this week I twisted the easy recipe into a breakfast dish. I’m absolutely loving it. Hopefully you’ll have time to grab the few ingredients necessary to create this filling breakfast recipe. What should you serve with the Stromboli? I’ll keep it simple and say, ‘fresh fruit.’ I made this for my staff last week and their opinion was pretty much the same. Gather a few festive plates, fresh juice, milk, fruits and terrific coffee and Christmas morning is sailing. For that matter, you’ve turned an ordinary breakfast or buffet into something different or special.

In the past week a few cooking events have been affirmed on the winter calendar. For those in the Platte City, Missouri area I’ll be in town, Sunday, January 21st for a cooking class. The theme will be ‘Preparing for the Super Bowl.’ The class will begin at 1pm and run through 3pm at the Platte City Lion’s Club Building. I’ll be presenting several different specialty foods for the big February party day. The bad weather date in Platte City will be February 11th, same time and location. I’ll also be in McPherson, Kansas on Saturday, January 28th doing a show from 10-Noon, at the Cook’s Nook on Main Street. If numbers grow there will also be11-8 a 1-3pm class. For both events a Facebook notification will be coming out this week. With registration information, cost and all the little details. In McPherson you’ll be reserving a seat by calling the Cook’s Nook. In 11-15 Platte City attendees will most likely be reserving a spot with yours truly in advance.

EGGNOG CHEESECAKE CRUST 2 ¼ cups (302g) graham cracker crumbs ½ cup (112g) salted butter, melted 3 tbsp (39g) sugar 1/2 tsp nutmeg FILLING 24 ounces (678g) cream cheese, room temperature 1 cup (207g) sugar

3 tbsp (24g) all purpose flour 1 cup (230g) eggnog 3/4 tsp ground nutmeg 4 large eggs, room temperature WHIPPED CREAM TOPPING 1 cup (240ml) heavy whipping cream, cold 3 tbsp (45ml) eggnog 10 tbsp (72g) powdered sugar Nutmeg, for sprinkling Pearl sprinkles, optional

DIRECTIONS: CRUST 1. Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C). Line a 9-inch (23cm) springform pan with parchment paper in the bottom and grease the sides. 2. Combine the crust ingredients in a small bowl. Press the mixture into the bottom and up the sides of the springform pan. 3. Bake the crust for 10 minutes, then set aside to cool. 4. Cover the outsides of the pan with aluminum foil so that water from the water bath cannot get in. Set prepared pan aside. CHEESECAKE FILLING AND TOPPING 5. Reduce oven to 300°F (148°C). 6. In a large mixer bowl, mix the cream cheese, sugar and flour until well combined (Use low speed to keep less air from getting into the batter, which can cause cracks). Scrape down the sides of the bowl. 7. Add the eggnog and nutmeg and mix on low speed until well combined. 8. Add the eggs one at a time, beating slowly and scraping the sides of the bowl after each addition. 9. Pour the cheesecake filling into crust and spread evenly. 10. Place springform pan (covered with aluminum foil) inside another larger pan. Fill the larger pan with enough warm water to go about halfway up the sides of the springform pan. The water should not go above the top edge of the aluminum foil on the springform pan. 11. Bake for 1 hour and 30-40 minutes. 12. Turn off heat and leave cheesecake in oven with door closed for 30 minutes. 13. Crack oven door and leave the cheesecake in the oven for about 30 minutes. 14. Remove cheesecake from oven and chill until firm, 5-6 hours or overnight. 15. To make the whipped cream, add the heavy whipping cream, eggnog and powdered sugar to a large mixer bowl. Whip on high speed until stiff peaks form. 16. Remove the cheesecake from the pan, then pipe the whipped cream onto the cheesecake. I made little rosettes with Ateco tip 844, but feel free to decorate as you like. Sprinkle with a little nutmeg and pearl sprinkles, if desired. 17. Refrigerate the cheesecake until ready to serve. Cheesecake is best for 3-4 days. https://www.lifeloveandsugar.com/2017/11/27/eggnog-cheesecake/

The moment I understood Silent Night

It was Christmas Eve 1948, I was 11 years old. We lived in southern Minnesota and our family of seven was out-side getting ready to load up in our 1937 Studebaker to attend mid-night mass. It was a very cold night. The fresh snow was on the ground, the sky was clear, there was a full moon and every-thing was very bright. All was calm, cold, quiet and still; it certainly was a holy night. It was just perfect. At that time in my life, every-thing seemed good. Out-side of being so cold, in my mind and in my spirit, I was taken back to that time of the first Christmas. Although it was at least 10 degrees below zero, I don’t remember feeling cold. I was trans-ported to a different place in my spirit. I felt I saw the edge of Heaven; total peace. We had no radio or commercials; none of the things that interfere with that spiritual connection. If there would have been one, I may have missed the whole experience. The church was always beautifully dec-

orated... We knew and loved our priest. Father Godfrey O’Sullivan. The mid-night mass was always very special, filled with much joy and anticipation of the wonders of Christmas and it’s meaning for the coming year. The influences of the world were not nearly as strong as they are today. Our experience did not run through the filter of commercialization that obscures the true message of Christmas. We lived in a rural area; our interactions were generally with family and neighbors. This left us free to be close to the earth and creation and opened many doors to communicate with our Creator; just like two friends talking. Today we are constantly bombarded to buy this or that. We get hammered with so much materialism; it’s like spinning in a meaningless circle. God gave the ultimate gift, His only Son. People are going into debt to pay for gifts that are frequently meaningless and break, gather dust, donated or re-turned the very next day. When it’s over, we

say “What happened?” did we miss the real meaning again? Just slow down, don’t worry about the tree and all the distractions. Spend more time on your inner self and prepare your highway. Make the path straight; clear away the obstacles that hide you from your Savior. Let the Holy Spirit come in and you will have a very joyful experience. The things the world gives you are passing away, but the things God gives you last forever. Joe Kahnke December 17, 2017

Nostalgia and Thoughts: Christmas through the years

By Sandra Pugh I ask the Life Story Writing Class students to write about a first memory in their life in many subjects. I have never tried to remember my first Christmas memory. So it is time for the teacher to try and write her first Christmas memory. I have memories back to the age of 2 when I first discovered my teddy bear in my bed with the high sides. I remember my 4th birthday and the wagon I received. I remember getting a bicycle for my 7th birthday, but not what I got for Christmas just a month before for either year. Coming up with the first Christmas Memory is going to be harder. As I sit here the first one I can remember was when I was 10. I received a Bride doll that stood about 2 1/2 feet tall with dark hair and blue eyes like mine. She wasn’t a bride doll when mom bought her but Ruby, my dad’s bookkeeper at the Co-op, made a beautiful dress and veil for her. The other memory of that year was the record I bought with my allowance money (25 cents a week). Right after Thanksgiving I bought “The Chipmunks Song” a Christmas Song. I wore my mom’s patience out with that record and I am surprised that it didn’t come up missing while I was at school. I hope I can come up with a few more memories of Christmas through the years, but the presents are not what remember. My best memories are always about going to my Grandparents house on Christmas day and seeing my Grandmother and Grandfather and all the cousins.

The year we lost Grandmother in the fall, it was not a good Christmas. All the holidays with her and my Grandfather were over and each of their 4 children went their separate ways and had their Christmas with their families. We still went to my other Grandparents when they had the dinner, but that was only every other year, but I didn’t get to see both sides of the family and spend time with all the cousins. When we got married we went to my parents on Christ-

mas Eve so we could have Christmas there with my family. That worked out great, because that was when my family had always opened packages. Some years, we would spend the night with my folks or some times we’d drive on down to his folks on Christmas Eve. We would have Christmas Day with them which was their normal gift exchange. My husband learned early on to hide my presents or wrap them so they wouldn’t rattle. I would still pick them up several times between the day he put

them under the tree and Christmas Eve. Most of the time I am pretty good about figuring them out but one year I had to weigh one. When our Black Cocker, Lady, moved in with us we discovered she loved packages and had an uncanny knack of knowing which ones were hers under the tree. Even if they didn’t have anything in them that she could smell or came from someone else she knew which were hers. She loved the challenge of finding out

what was in them. Our second Cocker, Lacy, loved to open packages too. But only the ones you gave her to open. But after she had opened all of her packages she loved to open ours. All we had to do was hold it in front of her and she would rip the paper off for us. Once the paper was off, the fun was over and she was looking for the next one we’d let her open. Christmas has changed again; our parents are gone and there are no fur babies to argue with over unwrapping packages or

December 20, 2017

help rip off the paper from our presents. We are now on our own: just the two of us for Christmas. We have a dinner and exchange gifts with my BFF and my husband’s golf buddy, who are husband and wife, and we really enjoy our time with them. It is the highlight of our Christmas season. Our Christmas through the years has changed in many ways. Merry Christmas to all our Rural Messenger readers. To Contact Sandy: [email protected]

Youngest Calf Roper In Bright Lights City Heads Back To Flint Hills Ranch Ninth Best In The World

Coop left no question in Glitter Gulch that young Flint Hills cowboys are among the best in the world. The youngest contestant there, Cooper Martin, 20, Alma, was a first timer at the National Finals Rodeo last week in Las Vegas. He’d gone into the city of bright lights in 14th place, and headed back home standing ninth in the world. That was after 10 nightly rodeo go-rounds, of Martin roping and tying calves among more mature ropers including

world champions. First performance, Thursday, Dec. 7, started strong for Coop with just-out-of-the money seventh place tie-down roping run of 8.4-seconds. Martin was 10 flat, for eighth, in the second go-round. Then, Coop’s Kansas cheerleaders came out of their crowded bleacher seats Saturday with a clock stop at 7.2-seconds. That was worth $20,730.77 for Martin in go-round money. Sunday’s Round 4 score tote board glowed all the way back to Wa-

the cowboy’s winning collection. Somebody said, “Cooper wasn’t nervous out there roping the calf. But, he sure was shaking when they awarded him the go-round gold buckle a couple hours later.” The next runaway calf was roped, but Coop couldn’t get it tied before the 25-seconds time limit whistle sounded. It was a disappointing no score in the fifth goround pushing Martin back in the average. His 9.8 seconds ranked the roper 11th in the sixth go-round. Yet, that run was followed by very disappointing “no times” in both Rounds 7 and 8. However, a comeback 7.4-seconds run split fourth and fifth in Round 9, adding $8,884.61 to Coop’s payroll. Final calf of the rodeo, Saturday Round 10, Martin wrapped up in 10.1-seconds, no payback at seventh place. All in all, Martin was 14th in the average with total time of 61.507-seconds on seven calves roped and tied. It was still a very a profitable 10 days for the young cowboy. He won a total of $151,284.18 for the year, substantially more than the $85,438 in his pocket coming into the city. Cooper Martin, Alma, Kansas, ranked ninth in the 2017 Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association World Tie-Down Calf Roping Standings.” As we get ready to head home after 12 nights in Vegas I wanted to say Thank You to all of our friends, family, and community that showed amazing support to our son,” expressed Mom Candi Martin in a Sunday morning Facebook post. “We had a blast watching our kid reach a lifelong goal and sharing it with all of you made it that much sweeter. He finished top 10 in the world and left with a buckle,” Mom, along with rancher dad Chris Martin, verified. “Coop was blessed to have his Texas Chick family, Schultz/Martin family, neighbors and friends, and several special rodeo families here for each round,” she expressed appreciation. An added postscript revealed: “The minivan is still in one piece, we will miss having a maid, I have no Christmas presents bought, but

man it’s been fun.” Tie down roping was a thrilling event for all spectators leading to both a new event champion and new all-around champion of the world. Marcos Costa was named the world champion tie-down roper after winning the average with 81.3 seconds on 10 calves. He won $317,421 for the year’s championship title. Only collecting checks in three gorounds, Tuf Cooper, last year’s world champion, was second in the average with91 seconds on 10 calves tied. Most significantly, Tuf Cooper beat out his uncle Trevor Brazile to be all-around champion cowboy of the world. Brazile ended eighth for the year in calf roping, and was runner-up to the all-around winner. Tuf Cooper collected $341,560 during the year, while Brazile had $319,337 total annual winnings. Now Cooper Martin was emphatic in expressing appreciation to all of his family, friends and the other cowboys for their support during the year. However, most importantly of all is his horse Payday. “He’s just a perfect fit. I could have never done this without this 17-year-old gelding. Payday is the best horse I’ve ever ridden I knew it from the start.” Cooper Martin was 33rd in the world last year with $36,221 in winnings, making him second in the Rookie Standings. He won three major rodeos last year including the most prestigious California Rodeo Salinas. Major highlights for Martin’s 2017 year included winning Yakima, Washington; Mitchell, South Dakota; Laramie, Wyoming; Jerome, Idaho, along with being co-champion at Eagle, Idaho. However, likely most important of all to Coop was winning the final-qualifying-rodeo-of-the season, the American Royal in Kansas City in front of Kansas family and friends. No rest for a good cowboy. Cooper Martin is on the road traveling to rodeos throughout the country looking to qualify for his second National Finals Rodeo next December in Las Vegas.

truce occurred between Ypres, Belgium and Neuve-Chappelle, France, and originated when a truce was called to bury the dead By Tom Emery between the lines in The First World War “no-man’s land.” “That’s how it startshocked the world ed,” said Cart. “It’s with its brutality and certainly not unusucasualties. But for a brief time at Christmas al for both sides to 1914, enemies became request a cease-fire to take care of the dead. warm friends. While many while others recall Germans placing small of the stories of the Christmas trees on top cease-fire have been embellished with time, of their entrenchments on a frosty Christmas the truce stands in contrast to the horrific Eve. One British soldier compared the lit warfare that ravaged trees to “the footlights Europe. of a theater.” “In some cases, the Multiple accounts men posed for photonote that German graphs wearing each troops began singother’s hats,” said ing carols, including Doran Cart, senior curator of the National Stille Nacht, commonly known as “Silent World War I Museum Night.” While some in Kansas City. “They Allied troops suspectexchanged cigars and ed a trap, many others cigarettes, and drank German schnapps and applauded the music and responded with British rum to celesongs of their own. brate the occasion.” Accounts of the truce An awestruck British fighter wrote that “I vary widely, and it is apparent that the truce shall never forget it. It was one of the highwas celebrated with different intensity, and lights of my life.” As more trees and with different length, candles appeared on at various spots along the lines. Much of the the parapets, Brit-

www.horschtrailers.com 620-545-7292 ish soldiers cheered mightily, including one who recalled that “I stayed awake the entire night. And it was a wonderful night.” A young Bavarian officer was one of many who shouted that a Christmas truce should be made, and that both sides should leave their trenches to approach the other. He recalled that the British eventually agreed, and that “a man came out of their trenches and I on my side did the same… we shook hands a bit cautiously.” They were joined by others, and the next day was filled with intermittent visits in no-man’s land, where men found their enemies to be quite engaging. “Many of the Germans who participated in this were Saxons and Bavarians, and a lot of them had lived or worked in England before the war,” remarked Cart. “There are examples of soldiers asking about others they knew in both countries.” Amid good-natured ribbing about the other side’s war efforts, men stood in small groups, chatting and joking while exchanging goods. Cart says that, unlike popular legend,

there were no actual Christmas gifts to each other. “They didn’t give any real presents to each other,” he said. “They traded goods they had, but nothing of any military value. Each side was happy to get what the other had.” Several myths have grown from what many British soldiers called “the wonderful day.” An example is that one or more soccer games were played along the lines, a recollection that has been challenged in recent years. “There may have been some kicking around of a ball, but I just can’t see any way that a full-fledged soccer game could have been played in no-man’s land,” commented Cart. “There would have been so much debris in that area, which had been a furrowed farm field. I don’t know that there would have been enough space of suitable ground to actually play a real game.” While the British and Germans are commonly associated with the Christmas truce, some French and Belgian soldiers also took part. However, many scholars believe those armies were in little

mood to celebrate with the Germans, who had overrun their countries earlier that year and were accused of various atrocities. In some areas, the truce did not end on Christmas Day. Pockets of opposing soldiers extended it into December 26, and in isolated cases, for a week or more. Commanding officers on both sides threatened reprisal for the men involved in the agreement, though there is no evidence of any actual punishments. Half-hearted attempts were made to repeat the truce at Christmas in subsequent years, but nothing like what happened that first year. The 1914 truce became a sensation in the English press, and countless British soldiers recounted the events of the truce in letters to home and the papers. The holiday ceasefire has since grown

into a global legend, its story captured in books and TV depictions. “A mythology has arisen from the truce,” said Cart. “There’s no doubt that a truce actually happened, because many, many men on both sides wrote and spoke of it later. But it’s become much larger than it probably was.” Ceremonial recreations of the Christmas truce have been held periodically over the years at the site, including in 1999. In 2014, diplomats of various nations joined to commemorate the centennial of the truce, a remarkable event that one British soldier wrote “made the bitterest of foes friends,” if only for a little while. The Silent Night

OBERNDORF, Austria --- Each year, on December 24, a special passenger train pulled by a bright red electric locomotive heads out of the train station in Salzburg for a half hour trip to the village of Oberndorf. A multitude of languages can be heard as passengers from all over the globe become Christmas pilgrims, heading for the birthplace of the world’s best loved Christmas carol “Silent Night.” At the same time, the Oberndorf streets are crowded with cars bearing license plates from neighboring European Churches can be seen across the nations and filled with people who have raced along the autobahns to arrive in time for the special Christmas Eve “Silent Night” twilight service. Throughout the world, “Silent Night” which has been translated into more than 200 languages, is an anchor for Christmas celebrations. Its lullaby-like melody and simple message of heavenly peace can be heard from small town street corners in mid-America to magnificent cathedrals in Europe and from outdoor candlelight concerts in Australia to palm thatched huts in northern Peru. The original church of St. Nicholas where “Silent Night” was first heard in 1818 was torn down in the early part of this century after sustaining damage from the flooding of the nearby Salzach River. The Silent

Night Chapel was erected on the spot in front of the main altar where Gruber and Mohr stood with the choir to sing the six-stanza carol. In a higher section of town, another church was built and the original pulpit and altars from the old church were moved there. At Christmas Midnight Mass, singers stand in front of the same altars and recreate the moment when the song heard ‘round the world was first performed. Research by Bill Egan, Christmas Historian

The Story of Santa Claus Once upon a time a man called Nicholas lived in Patara, a town in the East. Because he was very fond of children and was kind and generous to them, they came to think of him as their dear friend and their beloved saint. So it was that after a time the wonderful things he did were woven into a beautiful legend. You know that Santa means Saint and Claus stands for Nicholas, and that is how he came to be known as Santa Claus. In Santa Claus’s own town, Patara, lived a great lord who had three daughters. He was very poor, so poor that one day he was on the point of sending his daughters out to beg for food from his neighbors. But it happened that Saint Nicholas not long before had come into a fortune, and as he loved giving to those in need, he no sooner heard of the trouble the poor lord

was in than he made up his mind to help him secretly. So he went to the nobleman’s house at night, and as the moon shone out from behind a cloud, he saw an open window into which he threw a bag of gold, and with this timely gift the father was able to provide for his eldest daughter so that she could be married. On another night Santa Claus set off with another bag of gold, and threw it in at the window, so the second daughter was provided for. But by this time, the father had grown eager to discover who the mysterious visitor could be, and next night he kept on the lookout. Then for the third time Santa Claus came with a bag of gold upon his back and hitched it in at the window. The old lord at once recognized his fellow townsman, and falling on his knees, cried out “Oh! Nicholas, servant of God, why seek to hide yourself?” Is it not wonderful to think that this was so long ago, sixteen hundred years, yet we still look for the secret coming of Santa Claus with his Christmas gifts? At first he was said to come on his own birthday, which is early in December, but after awhile, as was very natural with Christmas so near, the night of his coming was moved on in the calendar, and now we hang up our stockings to receive his gifts on Christmas Eve. In some countries children still put their shoes by the fireside on his birthday. In others they say it is the Christ-Kindlein or Christ Child who brings the gifts at Christmastime. But it is always a surprise visit, and though it has happened so many hundreds or times, the hanging up of the Christmas stocking is still as great a delight as ever.

historian of the White House Historical Association in Washington, DC. “For most First Families, it was a quiet, family occasion.” The Civil War and the plight of soldiers weighed heavily on Lincoln’s mind. On Christmas afternoon in 1862, President and Mrs. Lincoln visited “many hospitals” to meet sick and wounded soldiers. The next year, ten-year-old Tad Lincoln, the President’s youngest son, sent many soldiers gifts of books and clothing with the simple identifier “From Tad Lincoln.” Lincoln spent part of that same Christmas Day discussing

the constitutionality of the draft with one of his personal secretaries, John Hay. The President also looked ahead, discussing preliminary plans for amnesty and reconstruction for those in rebellion. Bushong notes that Christmas in the White House in that era was usually overshadowed by a larger celebration. “The New Year’s Day reception in the White House was a really big deal at the time,” remarked Bushong. “Thousands of people came, and the White House was decked out in grand décor. New Year’s Day was a much larger celebration in the mansion than Christmas.” By comparison,

Bushong said that Christmas decorations in the White House were rather simple, usually consisting of greenery, bows, holly, and wreaths. The last Christmas Eve of Lincoln’s life in 1864 brought much-needed good news. Fresh off his successful March to the Sea, William T. Sherman famously telegraphed Lincoln, “I beg to present to you as a Christmas gift the city of Savannah, with one hundred fifty heavy guns and plenty of ammunition, also about 25,000 bales of cotton.” Two days later, Lincoln hosted a Christmas reception at the White House and also took time to write Sherman, expressing “many, many thanks for your Christmas gift – the capture of Savannah.” The President complemented Sherman for his success, writing “the honor is all yours.” However, the pragmatic Lincoln quickly put holiday cheer aside. “But what next?” inquired the President as to Sherman’s plans, adding, “I suppose it will be safer if I leave Gen. Grant and yourself to decide.” Lincoln and other Americans took comfort in the drawings of artist Thomas Nast,

who is credited as the first to depict Santa Claus as we know him today. Nast, who also drew the symbols of the present-day Democratic and Republican parties, offered a sketch of Santa in the Jan. 3, 1863 issue of Harper’s Weekly that showed him in patriotic garb, distributing gifts to Union soldiers. An obvious piece of propaganda, Nast’s original Santa is shown holding a marionette of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, with a rope tied around its neck as to mimic a lynching. Some have asserted that Lincoln requested, or even commissioned, this original Santa sketch, though many scholars dispute that claim. Nast drew Santa in other military and political surroundings in subsequent years, some of the many pro-Union sketches he produced. Lincoln clearly saw the value of Nast’s talents both at Christmas and yearround, reportedly declaring him “our best recruiting sergeant.” Tom Emery is a freelance writer and researcher from Carlinville, Ill. up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’ Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.’ When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has told us about.’ So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about the child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.” Luke 2:1-17

December 20, 2017 (Continued from page 1) apparently believed that fortifications were useless since the enemy could approach from all sides. He also reportedly considered Americans “country clowns” and may have believed that no attack would be made amid a building winter storm. Instead, he promised to “go at (the Americans) with the bayonet.” Historians debate how well Rall prepared his 1,500 troops, and some believe that he called for reinforcements that never arrived. Whatever the case, many sources report that Rall was so drunk on Christmas night that he had to be carried to bed. Meanwhile, Washington was concocting a daring plan. Around 2 p.m. on Christmas Day, his army left camp, and started loading boats on the Delaware River at dark. Though Washington’s plan called for three separate crossings, only his main army of 2,400 troops made it across. The Americans, though, took along plenty of artillery, a total of eighteen guns. The treacherous crossing was helped by the guidance of a regiment of New Englanders who were experienced seamen. But a massive winter storm struck around 11 p.m., hammering the poorly-dressed men with a brutal mix of wind, snow, rain, and hail. One soldier remembered the winter blast as “a perfect hurricane.” The boats were also threatened by floating ice blocks in the swift current. In the decades since, artists have taken dramatic license with the image of Washington, striking an inspirational pose while standing in one of the boats. In all

Page 15 likelihood, Washington was sitting down, trying to protect himself from the elements like everyone else. Not surprisingly, Washington was over three hours late in the crossing, but somehow prepared for an attack that had plenty riding on it. One modern writer declared that a defeat may have been a “catastrophe fatal to the American cause.” The Americans drove in the Hessian outposts around Trenton at 8 a.m. on December 26 though, contrary to popular legend, the Germans were not hung over from the night before. An American soldier recalled that “I did not see even a solitary drunken soldier belonging to the enemy.” Still, the surprised Hessians were no match for the aggressive Americans, and the battle lasted only ninety minutes. Washington captured 918 Hessian prisoners, while another 106 Germans were killed or wounded. Rall died from two mortal wounds the next day. Incredibly, only two Americans died – both from exposure—while two were wounded, including future President James Monroe, who nearly bled to death from a severe shoulder wound. The Americans, who celebrated with plenty of drinking of their own, returned across the river with their prisoners and capture of supplies on December 26-27. Three days later, Washington would march again on Trenton in another impressive performance. But the Christmas victory at Trenton would go down in lore for its importance in the American cause.

Sherman offered city to Lincoln as a Christmas gift By Tom Emery Conclusion to Epic March to the Sea When you do your Christmas shopping, what do you give the man who has everything? How about an entire city? At Christmas 1864, William T. Sherman did just that for President Abraham Lincoln at the conclusion of his destructive March to the Sea. The general offered the key port city of Savannah, Ga. as a Christmas present to Lincoln, a holiday tiding that has become a part of Civil War lore. Sherman’s five-week march from Atlanta to Savannah that fall is considered a decisive blow by modern historians, but the movement was highly risky. The high command in Washington was concerned with Sherman’s plan, as he wanted to advance deep into enemy territory without a supply line or communications.

As a result, Lincoln and other Union authorities were uncertain as to Sherman’s exact location for about a month. “When someone asked Lincoln about Sherman’s progress, he shrugged and said, “I know where he went in at, but I can’t tell what hole he will come out of,” said Dr. Samuel Wheeler, a research historian at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Ill. “When Lincoln received word that Sherman had indeed been successful, his relief must have been enormous.” Wheeler also notes that the fall of 1864 had been “exceptionally tense” for Lincoln, in part because of a stressful re-election campaign. “He went through an excruciating period in the run up to the election of 1864, and shared the popular opinion that he would not be re-elected,” said Wheeler.

“After the election, all eyes turned toward bringing the war to a conclusion. That, of course, brought a whole new series of anxieties.” Sherman’s 62,000 men left for the sea on November 15 with twenty days of rations and, when those were exhausted, lived off the land. He moved rapidly through Georgia with little opposition, but as he approached Savannah and its rich stores, food and other supplies were running alarmingly low. A prolonged battle for the city posed a threat to the army’s survival. Fortunately for Sherman, the outnumbered Confederate garrison withdrew, and the city surrendered on December 21. He was shortly visited by a U.S. Treasury agent, A. G. Browne, who was on the scene to claim the cotton, rice, and government buildings. Known for his hatred of bureaucrats, Sherman curtly refused Browne’s demands. Avoiding a confrontation, the agent sidestepped the issue with a diplomatic suggestion -- that Sherman offer the city as a Christmas present to Lincoln. Saying that “the President particularly enjoys such pleasantry,” Browne further noted that a message could be telegraphed from a nearby communications hub for receipt by Lincoln on Christmas Eve. Sherman accepted Browne’s advice and dashed off a brief message that read, “I beg to present to you as a Christmas gift, the city of Savannah.” Ever practical, Sherman added that the city came with “one hundred and fifty heavy

guns and plenty of ammunition, also about twenty-five thousand bales of cotton.” Lincoln received the wire on December 24. The telegram captured the imagination of the nation was reprinted in major newspapers, including page one of the New York Times, with the subhead “Sherman’s Christmas Present.” “Lincoln was very pleased to receive his ‘Christmas gift’ from Sherman,” remarked Wheeler. “It was probably the best gift Lincoln could have received that year.” On the day after Christmas, Lincoln wrote Sherman with “many, many thanks for your Christmas gift” and conceded that he “was anxious, if not fearful” of the general’s march from Atlanta. But, “the undertaking being a success,” Lincoln offered the glory to his general, writing “the honor is all yours.” “Lincoln was not interested in receiving individual credit,” commented Wheeler. “There’s an old saying, ‘It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit.’ I think Lincoln’s management of his generals personifies that statement.” The men of Sherman’s army celebrated Christmas in the rain in Savannah. After hearing a congratulatory order from their commander, they were dismissed for dinner, an undertaking enjoyed by some more than others. William Humphrey of Jacksonville, Ill., the fife major of the 101st Illinois, wrote that his Christmas meals were “breakfast, rice and beef. Dinner, rice. Supper, beef and rice.” Others had it better, though with equally limited selection. Men of the 16th Illinois Cavalry feasted on oyster soup, oysters on the half-shell, fried oysters, roast oysters, roast goose, rice, raisins, and coffee with condensed milk. The Christmas season of 1864 would prove to be the last in the field in the Civil

War, as the Southern armies surrendered the following spring. Sherman’s present of Savannah has become a hallmark of the smashing success of his march to the sea, though the general has been roundly criticized in some circles for forcing the war on the Southern people. POINSETT’S LEGACY LIVES ON IN CHRISTMAS FLOWER 19th-Century American Diplomat is Namesake of Poinsettia By Tom Emery

dent Madison, who sent him to determine which nations in rebellion with Spain were interested in treaties with America. After a stint in the South Carolina legislature, Poinsett was elected to three terms in the U.S. House as a Democrat. He resigned during his third term in 1825 to accept an appointment by President Monroe as the first U.S. Minister to Mexico. He held the position until 1829 and was often at the center of controversy, particularly over Texas annexation. Poinsett unsuccessfully attempted to broker a $5 million deal to acquire Texas, and his relations with the Mexican government were strained. While in Mexico, Poinsett became fascinated with a red flower called Flor de Noche Buena, or the Christmas Eve Flower. In 1828, he shipped cuttings of the flower to friends, and one made its way to the Royal Botanic Garden in Scotland. Despite the turmoil

surrounding his time in Mexico, Poinsett had scattered support as a Presidential candidate. A statue of Poinsett is also a Greenville attraction. The poinsettia has become a $250 million industry in the United States, largely due to the efforts of Albert Ecke, a German immigrant in southern California at the turn of the century who shared Poinsett’s fascination with the flower. His son, Paul Sr., created a grafting technique to aid production, while his grandson, Paul Jr., helped launch the poinsettia into an American holiday fixture. Today, the Paul Ecke Ranch near Encinitas, Calif. accounts for 70 percent of all American poinsettia purchases and half of worldwide sales. The best-selling potted plant in both the U.S. and Canada, poinsettias are usually bought by women, resulting in eighty percent of sales. Some 100 varieties of poinsettias are available today, though 74 percent of Americans still prefer red poinsettias, followed by eight percent white and six

percent pink. Tom Emery is a freelance writer and historical researcher from Carlinville, Illinois. He may be reached at 217710-8392 or [email protected].

I Remember...An Old Fashioned Christmas

By Doris Schroeder I Remember Ever so often, I hear the words “old fashioned Christmas” and immediately, a picture comes to my mind of our Christmases on the farm. They were not easy, by any means, but because they were inter-

spersed with work and hard times, they were precious and that is precisely why I remember them. The actuality of Christmas usually began with our school Christmas program, the Friday night before Christmas; our church program followed this on Christmas Eve, our family Christmas on Christmas Day morning, and then the trip to Buhler to visit with both of our grandparents and family. Starting about a week before Christmas, doing the nightly chores with my dad was very special to me. Sometimes there was a soft snow

falling gently from the sky, making the world dazzling in its glittering panorama. The clouds appeared to be gigantic comforters tossed about in the gray or navy blue sky. The soft white snowflakes fell about my face like little bits of cotton soothing my world in its softness. Sometimes, however, the wind blew fiercely and made us run for the barn, the granary and the pigpen. It was while doing the chores in the barn, the stable like Baby Jesus was born in, brought reality to the Christmas story. We had a manger, close to the door of the inside

of our barn, where we sometimes fed the cattle during bad weather. We also had some straw in the middle of the barn and it was my job to toss some into the cattle part for the animals to keep warm. I always thought of the shepherds coming to a place like this to see the Lord Jesus and it felt almost holy to me. However, when we finished our chores and hurried back into the house. The frugal glow of the kerosene lamp beckoned to us and cast dancing shadows on the wall of the farmhouse. The pot bellied stove burned brightly and cheerfully, beckoning us

to share her comfort. It is when we sat cozily around the fire, Dad would take out his Bible and read the Christmas story from Luke, chapter 2. As he read, I could picture in my mind the events that had transpired. The shepherds out in the field of a starry night, hearing the message of the angels and then hurrying to the stable to view the baby Jesus in his bed of fresh straw, and his family. No matter how early I woke up on Christmas morning, my mom would have gotten up earlier and had the stove burning brightly. I would be so excited to get my new doll, whatever it was, and giving

my parents their gift, usually something I had made at Sunrise in the woodworking room. Later, after the chores were done again, we would drive to Buhler for our relatives get together. Again my Grandmother Lange would have worked hard on the big feast that was served in the dining room of their bungalow house on Buhler’s Main Street. The grown ups always got to eat first and then we children. It must have taken the women hours to wash all the dishes and put them away but we children didn’t really notice that part. Later, some gifts were exchanged. Each family always got a purchased fruitcake from my single aunt and most of the time; it did make us sick. I remember one year my mother gave each family an oatmeal box filled with homemade fudge. It was so good, but that, too, probably made them sick. Too much of a good thing is not good for you, I found out. Later, we again traveled across the town of Buhler to my grandmother Kroeker’s house. When we got there, we would all gather in her little dining, living room and do a Christmas program. If we kids had a Christmas piece or a song we had learned for one of our programs, we would have to say or sing it. Later, grandma would hand out the sacks and we had a wonderful time, deciphering what was in them. When my grandfather was alive, some years, we each received a silver dollar and we considered ourselves rich. Later, as we drove home once again, we’d usually sing Christmas carols and reminiscence about the wonderful Christmas Day. When we got home, it was again, time to do chores. Life kept on at a working pace and it made us appreciate living all the more. Why not make this year an old fashioned Christmas and enjoy the simple things of life. Most of all, let’s truly remember the One whose birth we celebrate! May you each enjoy His presence. Doris appreciates your comments and can be reached at [email protected]

Laugh Tracks in the Dust

Milo Yield Well, the Christmas Season is upon us whether we’re ready or not. I’m not completely ready for Old Saint Nick’s visit, but I’m close. I’ll readily admit that I’m not a Christmas gift shopper, but simply a Christmas gift buyer. When I finally decide what to buy, I go to one store that sells the item and I buy it, period. No comparative price shopping by going from town to town or store to store. I figure I save money in the long run and, if not, I certainly save time. *** I get nostalgic during the Holiday Season and recently I started thinking about Christmas gifts that I remember from my childhood. I recall that fresh oranges in my Christmas stocking were a real treat. I can’t recall eating oranges at any other time of the year, but my memory might be failing me. I also remember a Santa Claus-brought Erector Set under the tree one Christmas morning. I was so excited. Folks my age may remember that an Erector Set was an exotic array of struts, nuts, bolts and belts for erecting buildings, bridges, vehicles, etc. Plus, the set wuz complete with a small electric motor and a set of gears to drive movement in the things built.

But, alas, my mechanical ineptness rose its ugly head even at that early age. I built very few complicated structures or things. But I loved to use the electric motor and a set of gears to grind up pieces of chalk of all colors. My patient, sainted Mother seldom complained about cleaning up all the chalk dust from everything in my bedroom. I admit, I should have taken the use of that Erector Set much more seriously than I did. If I had, as a teenager and adult I might have become a better builder than a “destructor,” a better “repairman” than a “tear-it-up man.” *** Another long-ago childhood Christmas gift that turned out to be a bummer wuz a widely-advertised on radio “Complete Farm Set.” As I listened to the radio ad every morning on WIBW radio out of Topeka, I wuz enthralled by the descriptions of colorful, life-like farm animals, barns, farm machinery, and livestock fences and pens. As I recall, my parents warned me that the farm set wouldn’t be as good as I envisioned. I think they knew something that cheap couldn’t possibly be good. But, I begged and pleaded enuf that the Farm Set appeared under the Christmas tree. Boy, was I disappointed when every item in the package wuz made out of “popout” cardboard figures. My folks did have the

decency to not say “We told you so!” It wuz my first lesson in getting what you pay for. *** Childhood Christmas presents that I recall turning out much better were my first Daisy Red Ryder BB gun and eventually my first 22-caliber rifle, also a sled with runners. We didn’t have sledding hills where we lived, but it wuz such fun to ride the sled being pulled behind the riding horses that the neighborhood kids and I had at the time. Sometimes Dad even pulled me behind the tractor or pickup. *** It was always a Christmas Holiday treat when my maternal grandmother came for a visit. She was a vivacious lady who loved to play games with me. She also played the rag-time piano by ear because she couldn’t read a note of music. But, she would jump at the chance to bang out Christmas carols on the old upright piano we owned. Sometimes we had neighbors visit for a Christmas party and we all gathered around the piano to sing Christmas carols raucously as Grandma played. She knew how to play every song anyone could think of. *** The winters of my childhood were colder and snowier than those of today. I remember playing the game Fox and Geese in the snowy playground of the South Fairview one room school I attended. And, of course,

snowball fights were common as well with someone eventually getting hit hard enuf to cause tears and teacher admonitions. *** Back then, Christmas trees were always eastern redcedar trees cut from a pasture or roadside ditch in our vicinity. I recall that I always kept an eagle eye out year-round for the perfect Christmas tree for Dad to cut. We had some store-bought tree ornaments, but we made garlands out of popcorn and ice-cycles out of narrow-cut strips of “tin foil.” The star atop the tree also wuz made out of a cardboard star covered with tin-foil. Early in my farm life, we didn’t have electricity. So when the REA brought electricity to our home, it wuz exciting to bedeck our Christmas tree with a strand of colorful lights. *** I hope my recollections of my Christmases from yesteryear brings to you fond

memories of your early childhood holidays. Times were certainly simpler then, but I never felt deprived of anything I really needed. We made do with what we had, we ate well and we enjoyed warm family and community good times. I couldn’t have asked for more. *** So, on that note, let me wish each and every reader a satisfying, fun-filled Christmas season, plus peace, prosperity and love. Have a good ‘un.

ROGER'S VIEW FROM THE HILLS: DECEPTIONS “THE GREATEST DECEPTION MEN SUFFER IS FROM THEIR OWN OPINIONS.” Leonardo da Vinci The horror of watching the fires in California is a horror that is repeated over and over. When I was a firefighter in the 1970’s the major factors in the spread of fires was well known, and efforts to minimize the factors that make the fires less has been well known for a long time. So then why does the number and severity of fire continue to climb? The passions of people who have other agenda’s and are far removed from the places that burn. I have in the past predicted that the really big fire in Colorado has not been seen yet. Some may think that when Colorado burned right into the Garden of the gods and the Colorado Springs area was the one. It is not. Because of policies advocated by organizations far removed from the area the really big one will happen. There are thousands of acres of dead and dying timber in the Rockies that needs to be taken down and remove the source for more disease and the fuel for the fire. And it is stopped by organizations and self appointed zealots who file law suits at every point that would make the forests healthy again. An the public and news media side with these people stopping the work of getting the wild lands back to being productive and healthy again. There is a sign that is up in a lot of communities in the West right now. They read LOG IT, GRAZE IT,

Roger's View From The Hills OR BURN IT! There is no unseen truths. The original intent of the Forest Service and the agencies that have become an alphabet of bureaucracies was to manage public lands. This means keeping them healthy and available for the citizens. Yet the BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT has a track record of excluding multiple use. The resulting fires on BLM lands is visibly worse than privately managed lands next to them. When fires from the public lands threatens private ranch land and controlled burns take place the result can be for the rancher to go to prison and be forced off of his land in bankruptcy. The Ventura fire is in an area that has not burned in 20 years. Yet when efforts to control the fire load are attempted there are organizations and individuals that throw the planned management into court and the result is the fire that is a part of the land takes everything. Yet you will notice the exceptions. The news points out the lone house that was not taken by the fire when everything else is a heap of ashes. Most times it is because the owners did their preparation to minimize their risk. The term ‘Urban In-

terface’ has become an often used term lately. In the 1970’s and before that was the 70% set of circumstances for Sedgwick County Kansas. This is what our department dealt with on a daily basis. Equipment and tactics for urban interface were what we dealt with without having the new term for it. This is simply where wild land and the dwellings and buildings of man meet. The Anderson Creek and Starbuck Fires were something that were going to happen and it just took the right set of circumstances for them to become the top 2 largest fires on private property in the United States. The realities of living in a sea of grass is that fire is an undeniable part of the region. The fire departments of the area do a wonderful job trying to keep homes and lives from being lost but even with the reality it is terribly difficult when equipment is aging, tax base is dropping, and the age of the firefighter (and his health) is increasing. If you feel so strongly about the great western landscape then do not join and fund organizations that are contributing towards the harm of it. Very little news is coming out about the fact that for the last 4 years the online Alkeda news magazine has been exhorting their followers to set fires in the forests and the west. Over half of the fires suffered in the last few years have been incendiary in nature. The arrests and trials of those arrested are soon lost from the news cycle. And as soon as the news-cycle is over the people will come out of the shadows again to stop working in the forests and hills to stop the fires from continuing with no control. What little news that I can get on Air-tanker 944 is that it is performing well beyond its expected limitations. With all the objections that the Forest Service and the Federal Government have had in the past the 747 has done a fantastic

job. Yet the Federal Government has not given the company a contract. So much for the statements that all measures will be taken to fight the fires in the West. Interesting now that Governor Moonbeam announced that “this may be the new normal in California”. Uhh, he was Governor in the 1970’s when I was on active duty. The fires were burning in California every year then and Santa Anna Winds have always been a devastating factor in the fires of CA. It has taken 47 years for Gov. Brown to get that fire is a part of life in his state. It has been a fact for centuries. He is a pretty quick study. Scientific studies identified the influences and preventative measures of fire in the 1970’s California. Yet they still allow building into these areas. When measures are taken to lessen the severity of the inevitable fires, the law suits come out. When a company that insures high end

December 20, 2017 properties offers a service that comes in prior to the fire covering the insured properties with a fire retardant foam, there is nothing but derision from the press. The process has been about 80% effective in saving properties. Instead of trying to extend the service to others the people who insure with that company are subject to derision in the press. Isn’t it time to start thinking ahead? Technology is advancing at a rapid rate and yet the protection from fire has to rely on the preparation of the individual, and the ability of the fire service to use limited resources. It is time for a pre-planning and planning session from the department and resident level to the level of the NFPA. Standards need to be addressed on the local conditions level and not the large urban department and Washington bureaucrats. A change of attitudes would help a lot. Those in authority tend to deceive themselves.

Deep mysteries: among the shadows

John Marshall Anyone notice the moon recently? A

memorable eastern moon, one of those full spectacular discs that happen on cloudless nights before the Earth’s shadow begins to cut over it. This one had been putting out a fierce light, a magnificent sphere, plump like a peach. Its glow cast a twiggy spray of bare trees over the yard. Deep in the night the shad-

When winter bites

When the temperatures in Kansas dip below freezing, two types of people usually surface – those who enjoy invigorating weather and those who tolerate the cold from the inside. How an individual feels about the cold weather usually depends on where he/she grew up, age and more importantly, attitude. Another element comes into play – wind chill factor. Wind chill factor is usually defined as the cooling effect from wind and temperature on the human body. Wind whisking by exposed skin during cold weather increases a person’s heat loss. An Antarctic explorer, Paul Siple, and his colleague, Charles Passel, first coined the term “wind chill” in 1939. Siple described wind chill as the relative cooling power – heat removal – from the body with various combinations of wind speed and low temperatures. Some 75 years later, wind chill has become a common term in our everyday conversation. Knowing the factors help people protect themselves against frostbite and hypothermia. Tissue damage occurs in frostbite when wind chill temperatures fall below –25 degrees F. Hypothermia results when the rapid loss of the body’s internal temperature alters judgment. This

ows are dark as coal, with edges sharp and piercing, cutting over barren gardens, shadows moving slightly as the moon continued its arc; shadows lap against the tree trunks, the light trickling in watery pools, like the surface of a tide against a jagged shoreline. All of this from a moon. A moon of our

youth, of memories. Long, long ago a moon like this would make our dog uneasy. Well into the night he’d let out an odd howl now and again, and in due time across the street the neighbor’s dog would take up the moon song. The duet seemed mournful, making it difficult for our world to settle

sometimes results in death. Western Kansas stockmen know the harder the wind blows, the lower the wind chill factor. Simply put, it is the relationship between wind speed and actual temperature that produces this chilling effect. People who spend time outdoors during these cold periods – stockmen, construction workers, hunters, runners and skiers – may create their own winds or increase the existing wind. Because movement magnifies airflow, they should be especially cautious of wind chill. Manual labor and other physical exertion can cause heat loss also. Sweat begins and heat is removed by vaporization. Breathing cold air also results in the loss of heat from the lungs. Few people realize that smoking, drinking, prescription drugs and illegal narcotics may also contribute to frostbite or hypothermia during bitterly cold temperatures. All of these dull the senses. Alcohol dilates the capillaries of the skin and that increases the body’s heat loss. Nicotine smoke absorbed by the blood causes the capillaries to constrict. This restricts the blood flow to the earlobes, fingertips and other regions of the body. Medication can have side effects too, so venture outside during cold weather with caution.

You measure the passage of time as only a farmer can. These seasons are not for everyone, but for you, it’s the only way. We understand, because we’re farmers too.

down for the night. There was, or is, something disturbing about such a moon, to child and dog alike. At times I would wake from a bad dream and find moonlight pouring into my room, falling across the bed, creeping up the covers like a burglar’s flashlight. The moon seemed an intruder, and I was frightened. It is a wonder what a

dog thinks of a moon at once blazing and indifferent, moving slowly across the night sky, shadows crawling against buildings, under the trees, into a shrub row. Here is a distant beauty, spreading deep mysteries into all the corners of darkness while most of our world is fast asleep. JOHN MARSHALL

Wind chill charts for regular references are available wherever outdoor equipment is sold. Use these charts only as a point of information. Wind chill charts aren’t always accurate because they don’t consider all the possibilities of heat loss, or the preventive measures against it. Air temperature is rarely a reliable indicator of how cold a person will feel outdoors. Elements such as wind speed, relative humidity and sunshine or solar radiation also play a part. A person’s health and the type of clothing worn will also affect how a person feels. When you go outside, dress for the weather and the wind. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing in several layers. These layers can be removed to prevent perspiration and subsequent chilling. Snug mittens are better protection than fitted gloves. Always wear a hat, preferably wool, ear protection and a scarf or neck gaiter. If it’s bitter cold – stay inside or limit your exposure to the elements. destroy any scent carrying molecules they contact, much like the oxidizing process of chlorine bleach. In short, ozone is an oxidant that destroys bacteria. After destroying bacteria molecules, the (03 ) molecules revert harmlessly back to oxygen (02). I read several testimonial articles written by serious deer hunters, one featured in Field and Stream that used a law enforcement drug dog to test the technology. They all agreed that while nothing will fool a critters nose forever, ozone technology does work to fool a critters nose for awhile. There are several companies marketing hunting gear featuring ozone technology; today I happened to be at Heartland Outdoor just south of Hutchinson, and they carry the Scent Crusher brand. Scent Crusher offers several options; there is an actual closet to store hunting gear complete with ozone generator for $300, a large fiberglass tote with lid and generator also for $300, a smaller gear storage bag with generator for $200, a room plug in ozone generator good for 320 sq. feet for $150 and a nifty little generator station to cleanse boots, hats and gloves for $80. This technology is not cheap and is probably only sensible for serious hunters. Check out their website at www. scentcrusher.com. Big round hay bales are a common denominator of the land-

scape these days most everywhere you look, and there commonality makes them excellent camouflage for deer, turkey, predator and waterfowl hunting. YouTube abounds with videos and ideas for making round bale hunting blinds. Muddy Outdoors offers The Bale Blind, a steel framework over which a denier fabric and burlap cover is stretched, making the blind appear very much like an actual hay bale. The blind has several different shooting windows that can be opened in different spots, making it ideal for waterfowl, as well as deer, predator and turkey hunting, or just wildlife watching or photography. The blind sells for $380 at Heartland, and can be viewed with their other products at www. gomuddy.com. At Mud River Dog products, a company that specializes in hunting dog accessories and training products, their goal is Dirty Trucks, Lonely Wives and Happy Dogs. They make a really slick organizer that hangs over the back of a seat and provides 4 large Velcro pockets for gear and dog training supplies and 2 padded gun cases. Heartland

Steve Gilliland with geese. has them for $100. See the rest of their products at www.mudriverdogproducts.com. Now for some neat stocking stuffers; Hunter Safety System offers a 2-pack of pop-up hunter orange safety signs that state “Hunter In Area,” to warn passers-by or other hunters that you are hunting in the marked area. They’re highly reflective and also show up easily after dark. Check out their many products at www.huntersafetysystem.com. Ever Mark Sales has a line of durable plastic signs designed to mount on “T” fence posts. They’re available in “No Trespassing,” “No Hunting,” “Leased” and blanks so you can add your own wording; www.evermarksales. com. And once again this year, ammo dealers have captured the

his first 2 Kansas Christmas spirit with special Christmas ammunition. CCI has bricks of 300 – .22 LR ammo with red and green bullets for $17 a brick. Not to be outdone, Winchester is offering 400 rounds of .22 LR shells in a specially made collectable wooden box for $29. If you have just read this, “I have no idea what to buy my hunter(s) and outdoorsmen for Christmas” is no longer a viable excuse. Get out and check out these and the thousands of other gifts Heartland Outdoor has to offer this year. Merry Christmas from Steve and Joyce at Exploring Kansas Outdoors, and please keep Christ in your Christmas. Steve can be contacted by email at stevenrgilliland@gmail. com.

Christmas through your eyes

Intermittent Irony By Lisa Meitner I have always been a HUGE fan of playing Christmas music and watching Christmas movies non stop from Thanksgiving until New Years Day. As far as I am concerned, Joni Mitchell singing River, “It’s coming on Christmas. They’re cutting down trees...” is perfection. My go to album for background music for a day of cleaning or while having friends over is “A Charlie Brown Christmas” by that great jazz band the Vince Guaraldi Trio. This is awesome because there are very few vocals to distract a person, plus, when there are vocals I am whisked straight away to watching those

great Peanuts movies. I feel like it just meant more in the “way back” when our only opportunity to catch these were to actually sit down as a family on the designated day that your local television channel ran these specials. Miss one and sorry, you were out of luck. I will be the first one to admit that I love owning DVD’s that can, and are, enjoyed as often as I like. It was an abomination (tip of my hat to Bumble, the abominable snowman from the Rudolf movie) of epic proportion if somehow we missed any of these classic kids cartoons during the season. Most everyone has a favorite Christmas movie. Truth be told, as when Buddy the Elf’s boss told him to “make work his favorite,” I refuse to be nailed down to just one. One of my longest friends and her daughter and sister in law and I make a yearly pilgrimage to the Wichita Art Museums interactive screening “Elf.” This year I am

December 20, 2017 throwing an interactive screening of Elf for three friends who have never seen it before. HORROR!! These girls need me to round out this holiday deficit in their lives! I can’t pass a channel if “Its A Wonderful Life” is on. It wouldn’t be Christmas Day if I didn’t have “A Christmas Story” on, non-stop, on the TBS channel beginning Christmas Eve. This gem about a middle class families Christmas in the 1940’s came out when my oldest daughter was 2, and I must admit that before I die, I am going to make one of my children wear a pink bunny pajama set like Ralphie. Also, I will always giggle when I see a frozen flag pole. I am grinning ear to ear typing the following short list: Miracle on 34th Street (original and remake), The Holiday, The Grinch That Stole Christmas, Scrooged, Fred Claus, Love Actually...You may snicker at the odd man out who might have Gremlins on their own list, but

not me. I made a stand many years ago that, in my home, Die Hard IS a Christmas movie! A few weeks back, I kidnapped my middle daughter and drove her through a not to be missed neighborhood light show on the far west side of town, “Candy Cane Lane.” She had a look of wonder on her face that I haven’t seen in years, just like the song Christmas Through Your Eyes waxes poetic about. I believe the only drawback for Jordan on this little adventure was that my all Christmas radio channel was a must for our background noise. Although this Christmas music nuisance brought one of the funniest moments for me. As Dean Martin finished Baby It’s Cold Outside, my daughter turned and looked at me in horror. “Did you listen to the words? She is trying to leave and he won’t let her. He put something in her drink! Is that song about date rape???” Google it. She is not alone on this theory.
