Kansas Profile -- Now That’s Rural: Tyson and Emily Mullen, Grant County Drug By Ron Wilson, director of the Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development at Kansas State University “The cutting edge.” Where would one expect to find the cutting edge with the latest in pharmaceutical care? Today we’ll meet a young rural Kansas pharmacist who is combining cutting edge technology with old-fashioned customer service. Tyson and Emily Mullen own and operate Grant County Drug in Ulysses, Kansas. Tyson came into the pharmacy business naturally. “My great-grandfather opened the first drugstore in Wichita County,” Tyson said. “I grew up hearing stories about how he would compound his own medicines and deliver them on horseback.” Tyson grew up in the rural community of Leoti, population 1,534 people. Now, that’s rural. He found he enjoyed science and math, and he had good mentors who encouraged him toward the medical field. As did his ancestor, he gravitated toward pharmacy. “I believe a pharmacist can impact people and help people on a daily basis,” Tyson said. His research found that Hutchinson Community College had an excellent track record of preparing people for pharmacy school, so Tyson went there for two years. That was also where he met Emily whom he later married. Tyson went on to the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy where he was president of his class. He served as a national student representative for the National Community Pharmacy Association and was (Continued on page 12)

Think of farmers and ranchers and this old, often forgotten tribute comes to mind. It fits farmers like seed in the soil or ranchers like a newborn calf takes to its mother’s udder. I’ve often heard friends, neighbors and family – my dad for one – quote bits and pieces of it. I’ve heard others refer to it at meetings, in church, at a sale barn, funerals and many other places where rural people live, work and congregate. It exemplifies the farm and ranch vocation. It goes something like this. A man’s greatest possession is his dignity and no calling bestows this more abundantly than farming. Hard work and honest sweat are the building blocks of a person’s character. Farming and ranching, despite its hardships and disappointments, is the most honest and honorable way a man/woman can spend days on this earth. The vocation of agriculture nurtures the close family ties that make life rich in ways money can’t buy. Children who are raised on a farm or ranch earn values that last a lifetime that can be learned no other way. Farming and ranching provides education for life and no other occupation teaches so much about birth, growth and maturity in such a variety of ways. Without question, many of the best things in life are free – the splendor of a sunrise, the rapture of wide open spaces, the exhilarating sight of the landscape greening each spring – true happiness comes from watching crops ripen in the field, watching children grow tall in the sun, seeing your whole family feel the pride that springs from their shared (Continued on page 15)

The Covered Dish: Wild Rice Pilaf

Wild Rice Pilaf

This past summer I wrote a recipe for a side dish of lemon pilaf. With just a little bit of innovation it has now become a ‘winter’ wild rice pilaf. Any time we sauté rice the word ‘pilaf’ can be incorporated in the name. This one is just delicious and it accompanies meat dishes from beef to turkey. I made it this past week in a batch 5 times the size of the usual recipe. What I thought I would do is share what I learned making all this rice for a party of 35 guests. Mainly if you’re preparing this much rice pilaf you must start at least 2 hours before the event. I started about 2 ½ hours before the dinner making five batches. With the wild rice there is a good chance the white rice will get done and the wild will remain chewy. True to word when I finished each recipe the wild rice was still a bit crunchy. Turn an oven or warm-

ing drawer to about 180 degrees. Make sure the containers of rice are sealed tightly with foil. Sitting them inside the low temperature oven helps the wild rice finish softening due to the steam process. We held ours for about an hour and fifteen minutes before serving. This also gives the hostess time to prepare before the guests arrive! I sat down this past week and ate a small portion of the dinner I was presenting with the pilaf. Wild rice soup, crab stuffed mushroom caps, steak, bacon wrapped green beans, cranberry relish, horseradish sauce, rice pilaf, hot rolls and cheesecake for dessert. One of my employees said it was their favorite dinner. It presents nicely and has a good balance. You are going to be able to accompany the rice with not only beef but also pork, turkey and chicken. If

leftovers are a problem you could also add a meat to the pilaf and call it a main entrée. I have to chuckle as I sit back and look at the past week. One morning I put my dress pants on inside out. The following morning I put my coat on inside out and proceeded to walk around in this fashion. It wasn’t until two very nice ladies tapped me on the shoulder and told me that I even figured it out. Last night I came home and asked where all the milk went? We had just purchased a new gallon the night before. About two hours later Ervin, my

2 tablespoons butter 2/3 cup wild rice 2 cups beef stock 3 tablespoons salted butter 5-6 green onions, chopped fine 1/2 cup finely chopped carrot or red pepper 3 garlic cloves, pressed or chopped fine The Covered Dish By Debbie Dance-Uhrig

1/3 cup chopped pecans 1/2 cup dried craisins 1 1/3 cups white long grain rice, rinsed 2 3/4 cups beef stock 1 large orange, juiced and zested 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon savory spice leaves

In large sauce pan sauté wild rice over medium heat in 2 tablespoons of butter. Add 2 cups of beef stock and cook until all liquid is absorbed. Add 3 tablespoons of butter and add onion, carrot and pecans. Toast until nutmeats are lightly browned. While cooking begin rinsing white rice. Drain the rice and add to saucepan. Cook rice until it begins to turn translucent, now add garlic and sauté without over cooking. Add chicken stock, craisins, juice from (1) large orange (2-3 tablespoons), salt, pepper and savory spice. Stir the mixture to a boil stage until there’s no stock left in the pan, when the pan is tilted. Zest the orange and ‘fluff’ into the rice. Serves 4-6 persons. Serve with beef, pork or chicken. You may consider adding the meat to the dish! husband, opened up the cabinet to get a glass and there sat the gallon of milk! Our son, Phillip, was tired and had Oreos and milk just before bed. He was really tired! Then there was Ervin, who misplaced two sets of keys, which were both found in unusual places. (Santa is giving Ervin a key

finder for Christmas!) Therefore this week just has to be better all the way around the horn! We host a big event at our home this week and the entire family is looking forward to the festivities. Should I also state that 80% of the holiday shopping is done, just not wrapped! It’s just a beautiful

season. And…I have a vacation day this week, which means I get to attend a family Christmas event on Sunday. It’s all good, so good. Enjoy the week and pray for snow! Simply yours, The Covered Dish. www.thecovereddish. com

Franching: Music programs Long time employee Jeanne Unruh shall be leaving us at the end of the year. She and I have worked many years together and I am sad to see her go. Word on the street tells me that grandchildren might be more fun and rewarding than working for the paper. They are certainly a very important part of her world. I hope that someday they will look back and realize how much time and love their grandparents poured into them. Thank you for all of your dedication and hard work that you have poured into the Rural Messenger over the

past 10 years. She has certainly had her hand on every edition of the paper. This last week Luke and crew preg checked and calf-hood vaccinated a group of cattle. The day dragged on, but with some freshly baked cookies and several pots of coffee they pushed through and finished. With a second child at home I asked my niece how things were going at her house and she surprised me and said it was going much better than she had expected! Our out of state deer hunters have not had as

much success, compared to years past. I think there are several factors involved. The warm weather for one, healthy coyotes, and multiple deer hunters seeking venison. However the only deer I ever killed was in my parents blue Oldsmobile, making me a non-hunting expert. A chapter closed for Allie this week. She had her last elementary Christmas music program. The kids did well. I often say that 6th grade is the last time some of the boys will sing. Weston got to take a ride on the Polar Express. The kindergarten classes had a big day building up to an afternoon party where they got their ticket punched and the watched the Polar Express movie. My kids are certainly ready for a break from school. They mainly want to know what they are getting for Christmas. We got the Christmas tree brought in. We cut down an Eastern Red Cedar from the pasture.

Nostalgia and Thoughts: Christmas Trees Past

By Sandra Pugh A little history of the Christmas tree: The evergreen fir tree has traditionally been used to celebrate winter festivals (both pagan and Christian for thousands of years. Pagans used branches of it to decorate their homes during the winter solstice because it made them think of the spring to come. Christians used fir trees as a sign of everlasting life. The first decorations were usually edible; such as gingerbread, apples and popcorn. Some people made roses cut from many colors of paper and some used candy. Then glass makers made small ornaments. At first the figure of baby Jesus was put on the top of a tree, but over time it changed to an angel to signify the one that told the shepherds about the birth of baby Jesus or a star like the Wise Men followed to the manger. The first Christmas Trees came to Britain in the 1830’s. The tree would have been decorated with candles to represent stars and in Europe some still use candles. In 1885 a hospital in Chicago burned down because of candles on a Christmas tree and for many years homes burned down from the candles on Christmas trees. In 1917 a New York teenager came up with a novel idea and he and his brothers started the NOMA Electric Company which became a famous name for Christmas lights. They created long strings of lights with painted bulbs of red, green and blue for Christmas trees. In the 1890’s until World War I trees were made from colored ostrich feathers. Artificial Christmas Trees became popular in the early 20th century.

Around 1900 there was even a short fashion of white trees, so the idea that colored trees are a new invention is false. Over the years artificial trees have been made from feathers, paper mache’, aluminum, glass, and plastic. A lot of us remember the aluminum trees of the 60’s. You couldn’t put lights on them so a wheel with red, green and blue colors of plastic with a light behind it would shine on the aluminum tree to add color. My dad always picked out our tree and bought it. The trees back then were

the old scraggly fir trees. He went to the grocery store and picked one that was leaning against the store front. In the 50’s and 60’s they were usually wrapped in a mess bag so you really were buying a pig in a poke (something that is bought without seeing it first). Dad couldn’t tell what it was going to look like, except for the height, until he cut the mesh bag off. It would take an hour or so for the branches to drop and show their thickness, or lack of. Those trees needed a lot of decorations and 5 pounds of silver

tinsel icicles to fill in the holes between the branches. My husband and I had a few live trees when we were first married but after our first Christmas in the new house and months of trying to get rid of the needles in the thick plush carpet we went to artificial. The one we have now looks real and is covered with lights. We never take it apart, just take it to the basement and cover it up so it doesn’t get dusty. I love putting all the decorations on the tree. One ornament is always the first one on

the tree and always hangs front and center on the tree so we can see it all the time. It was given to us by one of my husbands bosses a few years after the boss retired. There are others that mean a lot to us that are added in special areas of the tree and also bring back memories. I use strings of tinsel garland and then crystal bells and icicles. Sometimes I weave gold ribbon into the branches. Our tree is mostly crystal and gold. Of course there is an angel on top or sometimes I use a big

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

December 13, 2017 gold bow to match the ribbon. There is always a sock reindeer (like a sock monkey) sitting under the tree. He survived both of the cockers that loved carrying him around by his nose and shaking him to hear the bells on his antlers ring. His nose is a little dirty from being mouthed by the two cockers but that brings back memories of them enjoying Christmas. So as you decorate your tree, remember the meaning behind Christmas trees past and the special people in your life and the reason for the season. Merry Christmas. Sandy

Traditional Winter Horse Feed Supplement, Bran Mesh Evaluated For Nutritional Benefits

“Do cowboys supplement horses with bran mash to improve winter performance?” During the cold, dreary days of winter, a common discussion is whether or not horse owners should provide their horses with a bran mash daily, weekly or at all, according to Dr. Tom Lenz, renowned equine veterinarian. “Wheat bran is a fluffy, low-density feed that is similar in nutrient content to oats,” explained Lenz, past president of the American Association of

Equine Practitioners. “It has one-half the density of whole oats, around one-fourth the density of corn or wheat and about four times the phosphorous content of most grains,” said Lenz, lifelong advocate for the welfare of the horse. Bran mash is relatively high in vitamins such as niacin, thiamin and riboflavin, but much lower in B vitamins. “A horse ration with bran mash is palatable once they’ve become accustomed to it, but it’s expensive for the nutritional value it provides,”

Four to eight cups of bran mash is generally mixed with warm water until the bran is well saturated to be fed horses as a nutritious winter treat.

Lenz pointed out. Bran mashes have traditionally been provided to horses by their owners because they think there is high-fiber content in the bran. “Combined with various mixtures of grains, supplements and warm water, bran will increase water intake during cold weather and prevent col-

ic,” the equine specialist said. “However, some horse owners feed bran because they simply want to give their horses a warm, comforting treat,” he added. There are a variety of bran mash recipes commonly used. Most involve mixing warm water with roughly four to

Dr. Tom Lenz, renowned equine veterinarian, said bran mash has some benefits as winter supplement in horse ration.

eight cups of bran until the bran is well saturated, the horse doctor explained. “The mixture should cling together when you squeeze it,” Dr. Lenz described. “If you can squeeze water out of it, it’s too wet, and more bran should be added. Then any number of ingredients can be added.” Most horse owners add one tablespoon of salt in winter, or electrolytes during hot weather. Steamed oats, molasses, flaxseed, chopped carrots, sliced apples or a combination can also be added. “These increase the nutritional value of the mash and often make it more appealing to the horse,” Lenz said. Pelleted feeds are not routinely added, as they make the mash “mushy.” Many veterinarians recommend providing horses with a bran mash once a week during cold winter months. This is generally when the horse is not drinking enough, following stressful work, during long trailer transport or after foaling. “They think providing a bran mash supplement stimulates the horse’s intestinal tract and provides an alternate water source,” Lenz evaluated. Nutritionists point out several potential problems with feeding bran mash too often. “Horses require more calcium than phosphorous in their feed, and wheat bran contains 10 times

as much phosphorus as calcium,” Dr. Lenz explained. As a result, horses fed bran daily, without correcting the mineral imbalance, can develop a metabolic condition. “Known as nutritional secondary hyperthyroidism, often called ‘big head,’” Lenz said. “This condition used to be referred to as miller’s disease common in horses fed the bran byproduct of milling wheat. “The disease is characterized by enlargement of the facial bones and weakening of all other bones in the body,” the veterinarian continued. To correct the calcium-phosphorus ration, some horse owners mix alfalfa cubes into their bran mash. Another concern expressed by some nutritionists is that when an owner feeds a meal of bran mash, it is a dramatic diet change. “The original bacteria population that developed to digest the horse’s normal hay and grain diet is destroyed,” Lenz described. Intestinal bacteria thrive in a steady, unchanging environment. “Therefore, nutritionists recommend that if you’re going to feed your horse a wheat bran mash,” Lenz clarified, “it should be supplemented with digestive-aid products to help maintain healthy fermentation patterns in the intestinal tract. “Bottom line is that bran mash provided no more than once a week is a good treat for your horse,” the equine expert said. “It can provide some benefit to the animal’s intestinal tract, but avoid feeding a mash daily.” If you have questions regarding bran mashes, talk to your local equine Extension nutritionist or an American Association of Equine Practitioners veterinarian, Lenz suggested.

The Duke and I I received tons of feedback to the column I wrote about meeting celebrity animal stars like Jet Deck, Peppy San Badger, Bertha the Elephant, Poco Bueno and Borden’s Elsie the Cow. Okay, so I only received one letter in response, but it was a long one. In that missive the writer wanted to know what famous people I’d met and if I considered myself a “celebrity”. I should say so! People used to line up to meet me at book signings. Okay, so only one person lined up. But in my 65 years I have managed to meet a few notable celebrities. The most valuable piece in my collection of people is a photo of me and Ronald Reagan as I presented him the honorary state farmer degree when I was President of the California FFA and he was Governor of California. The second most valuable item is a book written by Nolan Ryan that he autographed for me after my buddy

Riding Hard By Lee Pitts E.C. made it possible for me to eat lunch with Nolan and his wonderful wife. E.C got me the book as an apology because the photo he took of me and Nolan “didn’t turn out.” That happens to me a lot as I’m not what you’d call photogenic. I still think the beef industry should have made Nolan our permanent “pitchman”. I got to meet one of my favorite authors, James Michener, at a Texas Brangus sale, and we have a cocktail napkin signed by Joe Dimaggio. What a gentleman he was! As were my two all-time favorite rodeo cowboys: Gene Rambo and Larry Mahan. When I was writing feature stories for Cowboys and Country Mag-

azine I got to interview stars like Lynn Anderson, Randy Owen and Rex Allen. I also had a radio relationship with Paul Harvey and I have a drawer full of cassettes of him reading my essays. I’ve always been more interested in collecting celebrities in the cattle and horse trades than in seeing Hollywood stars and I loved interviewing Walter Merrick and Reba’s little sister Susie. What a great gal she is! And Baxter Black has pounded on our piano, fed our cows and slept in our bed, although there’s no sign saying so. Many celebrities are attracted to cattle and horses and seem to love auctions. The purebred cattle business attracts celebrities like it does IRS auditors. Some of the stars who have cattle include two members of Alabama, and one half of Brooks and Dunn and the Bellamy Brothers. I once worked a horse sale where George Strait was present and an Arab horse sale for Wayne Newton. I met Mrs. David Rockefeller on a plane as we were both headed to the same Simmental sale and by the time we bid

adieu the next day we were old buddies. I met Huey Lewis in the San Francisco airport and we had a good chat about his fondness for Red Angus. Sports stars are also drawn to the cow business and in one of the first sales I ever worked we sold some cattle for Harmon Killebrew. I met Bobb McKittrick, former longtime offensive line coach for the 49ers, through Paul Harvey and sat with his lovely

wife through many 49er games. Another extremely enjoyable celebrity I met was Bill Bertka who used to coach the Lakers. I loved talking hoops with him. Speaking of basketball, Horace Grant, who played on four of the same World Champion teams that Michael Jordan did, was in my section at a charity auction and he was extremely cordial. As was TV’s favorite bachelor, Andrew Firestone. Rob Lowe did a great job announcing one auction I worked. I suppose the biggest star I ever worked for was John Wayne. I worked his 26 Bar Hereford sale for many

years and his cattle sold for a lot of money while he was alive and on the auction block. After he died they brought far less. The difference is what I call the “celebrity factor”. I fear in that respect the Duke and I may be very much alike. For my wife’s sake I hope there is at least some celebrity factor attached to the books I autographed for her as I was counting on that being the life insurance I never bought. I hope that answers the deluge of mail I received. wwwLeePittsbooks. com

Living Impaired Forever Worthwhile “Cowboys always used to shoot their horses when a leg was broken.” That’s morbidly, sadly true. Generally there was thought to be no alternative. Treatment and recovery were considered impossible or nearly so from physical, financial and logistics standpoints. Truly from kindness of heart, love of mount, stopping misery, pain, inevitable death after long suffering, bullet seemed best. Today is different than decades gone by fortunately in certain situations. With modern medicine, knowledge, techniques, before untreatable leg injury can be doctored back to normal or nearly so. Very regrettably, despite modern sophistication, education, research and equipment, recovery is still sometimes thought impossible. Again, after every resource and effort has been exercised, life end is deemed only humane action. Simple painless prick in-

jection puts suffering to sleep peacefully. Yet, those with permanently injured and even completely missing limbs can often continue onward with most useful lives. A repeated reflection of several permanently lame horses. Still, they’d run their hearts out and win in many speed competitions day after day among the stringiest runners. Science and medicine will contradict it, but other always unsound horses unable to move without gimp go sound in rail classes. Hurt completely unknowable by the best of horsemen and judges, they win too. Many say it can’t happen, but proof is in performance all because that horse has so much try and such a big heart. Horses missing a leg, even two, have still been very productive. Not completely uncommon are outstanding stallions with gone or deformed limbs breeding and siring offspring under various management procedures.

Especially memorable is hearing about and seeing photos of Shetland pony stallions with only two rear stubs. They were used for heavy mating when those small equines were so highly in demand six decades ago. Additionally, mares with missing or deformed limbs successfully reproduce, while limb-missing-impaired geldings can become caretakers themselves human rehabilitation and nurturing. Three-legged and two-legged dogs and cats are frequently seen, enjoying lives with no reserves. Other red meat animals, cattle, hogs, goats, sheep, are producing with limbs missing and deformities. Many people have lost fingers, hands, arms, feet, legs, bear other most serious issues, and are still serving. There is never right to end life in name of humaneness. Reminded of Psalm 92:12: “The lame can still flourish longlived, upright and

Lambda Sigma, the pharmacy national leadership society. To his great credit, he felt strongly about coming back to western Kansas and maintaining the tradition of independent pharmacy. After graduation, Tyson worked for a pharmacy in Lakin. In July 2013, Tyson and Emily bought Grant County Drug in Ulysses. Tyson serves as the pharmacist while Emily, who is also trained as a nurse, keeps the books and looks after their two daughters. It is especially exciting to see a young pharmacist take ownership during a time when the average age of pharmacists across Kansas is in the mid- to late-50s. “My generation is pretty flexible,” Tyson said. “We use technology so much more than our predecessors.” A simple example is sending customers text messages about their needed prescription refills. They also have a system which automatically sends recorded calls using Tyson’s voice as refill reminders. “There is an iPhone app that lets you scan the bar code on the medicine bottle which makes it more convenient to get refills,” Tyson said. He is working on integrating multiple software programs to assist with patient information. “Studies show people only refill their monthly maintenance medicines eight times a year (rather than the twelve they should have,)” Tyson said.

“With better information for them, we’re taking better care of people.” He pointed out that pharmacy school has evolved also. “It’s not about pills,” Tyson said. “We are moving more toward wellness programs and preventative health.” Even more exciting scientific developments are on the horizon. “It is possible to do genetic testing with a rapid swab now, which helps us understand individual differences in metabolism,” Tyson said. “That means we can adjust or identify medicines that they will work most effectively for the individual,” he said. Imagine medicines that can be scientifically tailored for each patient. This is cutting-edge technology being pursued in a rural pharmacy. However, the most important factor for Tyson is still service with a personal touch. “Unlike the big chain stores, we can take the time to get to know our customers,” Emily Mullen said. “When Mrs. Jones walks in the door, we don’t have to ask, `How do you spell your name again?’” “The conversations are important,” Tyson said. “When I call a patient and learn that a particular medicine upsets their stomach, I can adjust to another product which will serve them better.” For more information, see www.grantcountydrug.com. a rural setting pursue these advances in technology. We commend Tyson and Emily Mullen for making a difference with technology while maintaining the personal touch. Kansas Farm Management Association economist gives tips MANHATTAN, Kan. — With the new year straight ahead, there’s no better time for farmers and ranchers to take stock of where they are financially in order to put them in the best tax situation possible, according to agricultural economist Mark Dikeman. Dikeman, associate director of the Kansas Farm Management Association at Kansas State University, said some farmers arrive at the end of the year without a good understanding of where they are financially. Spending time now to determine where your operation is can benefit a farmer in the long run. “In the last 10 years, we’ve looked at tax planning from the perspective of keeping income down and staying in a certain tax bracket,” Dikeman said, but with lower commodity prices the last couple of years, some farmers may be on the brink of showing a net operating loss, which has its

own pitfalls, tax-wise. In addition to obvious reasons to avoid such a loss, a net operating loss means a farmer will not be able to utilize personal exemptions, capital loss carryovers, or all of their standard deduction. “That’s lost to you. Avoiding a net operating loss is always a good idea. For a married couple with two children, that is up to $28,900 in lost deductions in 2017,” Dikeman said. He provided yearend tips: Get your records in order. Having an accurate set of records is critical for a tax preparer to work with. That doesn’t mean a shoebox with a bunch of receipts. A computer program or ledger sheet -- something that’s reconciled back to a bank statement -- is best. If you don’t have that set up, consider that your New Year’s resolution so you’ll be better prepared next year.

Don’t wait until the last minute to get your records in order. Waiting until December to start your bookkeeping for the year means guessing about checks written in January and that doesn’t lead to accurate records. Meet with your tax preparer before the end of the year to discuss your current financial situation and what tax bracket you’re likely to be in. Allow enough time to bring in additional income if facing a net operating loss or to make additional purchases if your income is too high. If a farm loss is inevitable, think outside the box to bring in additional income. Extra IRA distributions, traditional IRA to Roth IRA conversions, or non-farm capital asset sales (like stocks) can potentially offset negative farm income and avoid a net operating loss. Remember the option to sell grain using a deferred contract. In that case, you can sell

grain before the end of the year, but not be paid until after the first of the next year. You then have flexibility to decide, after the fact, if you need additional income in the year that the crop was sold. Make sure you sell in several small contracts rather than one large contract to provide more flexibility for when to show income. Make sure you tell your tax preparer about

popular, Dikeman said, is to not make any estimated tax payments, but in that case, you must file your return and pay all tax due by March 1. The downside is that if you have investments in stocks or mutual funds through brokerage accounts, some of those firms don’t mail 1099 forms until mid to late February which may not allow enough time to

working and harvesting from the land. Farmers and ranchers believe that through their shared vocation they are giving more to the world than they are taking from it – an honor and privilege that does not come to all men or women. Agricultural producers believe their lives will be measured ultimately by what they have done for their fellow men/women

and by this standard, fear no judgment. They believe when they grow old and sum up their days, they will stand tall and feel pride in the life they’ve lived. Farmers and ranchers believe in their vocation because it makes all this possible. John Schlageck is a leading commentator on agriculture and rural Kansas. Born and raised on a diversified farm in northwestern Kansas, his writing reflects a lifetime of experience, knowledge and passion.

(Continued from page 12) file by the deadline.

1Other options are to make quarterly estimated tax payments, although this is the least popular. In that case, the tax return must be filed by April 15. This option may be required if less than twothirds of your gross income comes from farming. Some farmers make one annual estimated payment which must be paid by Jan. 15, though the tax return itself must be filed by April 15. In that case, the smaller of 100 percent of last year’s tax liability or two-thirds of this year’s tax liability is the estimated payment amount with any shortfall due when the return is filed. A final option for farmers when it comes to filing deadlines is to not pay any estimated tax and file by April 15. If a farmer owes tax, this would likely result in penalties and interest, Dikeman said, but usually not as much as interest paid if they had to borrow the funds to pay taxes. “More and more are doing that because cash is tight and operating loan balances are high. Depending on the situation, it might make sense to do that,” he added. 701 E. 30th Avenue Hutchinson, KS 67501 620.663.7004 Mon.-Thur.: 11 am-9:30 pm Fri.-Sat.: 11 am-10:30 pm Sun.: 11 am-8:30 pm

And that list seems to be getting longer … while the bank account gets smaller. That often happens when kids catch an acute case of FOMO during the holiday season. The “Fear of Missing Out” includes not getting some of the gifts they want, or the latest, cool things their friends are receiving. So Mom and Dad go way over the family budget. They hit the credit cards, and the holiday bills climb. After all, overspending on gifts and beginning the New Year with added debt is as much a holiday tradition as mistletoe and stockings hung by the chimney with care. “Many adults annually prove they have not learned their lesson, and it’s an expensive one that keeps adding up,” says Jeff Dixson (www. nwfts.net), a financial educator and author of Winning The Retirement Game. “Discipline is a prerequisite for financial stability, and this kind of chronic overspending of money they don’t really have certainly doesn’t bode well for a family budget, let alone a retirement plan. But habits can change, and the sooner

the better.” Dixson gives four tips for how to keep holiday shopping reasonable and avoid excessive debt: • Look at the big picture. Credit card use means putting off paying for something you didn’t have the money for. So forecast what that mounting credit card bill will add to your regular monthly expenses. “The long-term pain isn’t worth the short-term gain of getting the kids everything they wanted and more,” Dixson says. “Seeing their smiles on Christmas morning is nice, but you also have to see on paper the money crunch ahead; that can act as a deterrent.” • Use one card. If you must use a credit card, Dixson says, put the rest of your cards aside and use the one with the lowest interest rate. This also makes it easier to track your spending. “If the one card is included in your budget, fine, but remember you’re paying interest each month,” Dixson says. “You need to impose a holiday limit on the card.” • Make a real budget. It’s the easiest thing to do before all the shopping. Set up a budget each year as to what you can afford to spend (for example, $600 = $50 per month) and set this aside

each month in order to have the money you expect to spend. But for many people it’s the hardest thing to execute when they’re out shopping. “They lose will power,” Dixson says. “It gets to be a little like gambling; you have to decide how much you can afford to lose, or how much you’ll go over without being totally stretched in January and beyond.” • Make it a teaching moment. The holidays are a great time to teach your kids about money, a lesson that could last a lifetime. It’s not a matter of being Scrooge; it’s about showing them money doesn’t grow on Christmas trees. Most families have budgets, and part of being responsible means not over-spending. “The greater good of the family is served rather than immediate gratification,” Dixson says. “They’ll learn something meaningful about money, appreciation and responsibility that will stay with them when they have families of their own.” “If more parents could apply these forms of financial discipline during the holidays,” Dixson says, “it would greatly help them develop a longterm financial plan, as well as greatly help their kids.”

Hope is the thing with feathers By Emily Dickinson Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without the words And never stops - at all And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard And sore must be the storm That could abash the little Bird That kept so many warm I’ve heard it in the chillest land And on the strangest Sea Yet - never - in Extremity, It asked a crumb - of me.

you tell a teen, it will all be okay when youyourself really don’t know? I can tell you when I saw an angel… There was a moment that David was hurting, more than most of us have ever hurt, and a moment that a young man was having a soul breaking moment, in the midst of the prayers of everyone who stopped or who gave a blanket or who offered help. The young man squatted to the ground and asked for forgiveness from anyone or everyone who would give it, and he cried as the rest of us prayed. In that moment I saw an Angel. While we all were scrambling to save a man, while we all were thinking about tragedy.

David Shinn looked up, and held the hand of the young man who had hit his motorcycle… Not even seconds later as prayers were being said, I heard David say to the young man. “ It’s okay, you are a good man.” The young man who had just broken him, David had encouraged and hoped that this would not define the teen. I saw an Angel that day. A man who cared more for others than himself, a man who loved so hard not even a broken body would stop him sharing a kind thought and words. A gift of a gentle heart in the worst of times. God Bless you, David Shinn and, my thoughts and prayers are with you and you family. You truly are an inspiration. Amen

If you spot a Spotted Skunk would like help learning more about this unique skunk. Eastern spotted skunks have a black body with multiple broken white lines and a white triangle on their forehead. They are smaller than striped skunks, but still have the ability to spray repugnant-smelling musk as a defense. In the 1930s, spotted skunks were the third most common furbearer pelt sold in Kansas. Today,

they are classified as threatened in Kansas and are rare. To better understand the range and occurrence of spotted skunks in Kansas, KDWPT requests reports of any spotted skunk sightings, including road kills, trail camera photos or those inadvertently trapped. Reports, preferably with photos and GPS locations, can be emailed to kdwpt. [email protected].

THE MOST POSITIVE HUMAN FORCE THE WORLD HAS EVER EXPERIENCED The most positive human force the world has ever experienced is “Western Christian Civilization” as Winston Churchill coined it. Its foundation began in the Holy Bible, became prominent in a declining Roman Empire, preserved Europe through the Dark Ages from Muslim’s marauders, and then began to blossom with the invention of the printing press from an old wine press five hundred years ago, so that humans everywhere could read the bible, develop their own belief in God, thus they, and others, thereby establishing the basis of THE INTRINSIC VALUE OF EACH HUMAN LIFE AS CREATED IN GOD’S IMAGE, from Whom our common standard of truth, freedom, kindness and human dignity derives. The United States of America in its 240 years has become the world’s flagship of this most positive force known to Man. Yet despite that flagship’s independence, like all ships, it must repair to its Harbor, God our Creator and Jesus, His Son our Savior. This, our Highest Priority in our founding Declaration, “LIFE” and as extended in our constitution to “our Posterity,” the UNBORN, this Priority in our founding law and classical medical ethics must be restored as it was, when God graced US to land on the moon. this is exactly how we will restore America’s greatness again, by returning to God’s words and our founding father’s words which have proven their overwhelming benefit to US above all other nations. What was I thinking, I cut my own Christmas Tree by Joe Kahnke My wife and I discussed cutting our own Christmas tree this year, and she said I should just buy one since we could get a pretty nice one for 50 to 100 dollars. But I wanted the fun of cutting our own, so I got my permit for $10 and drove my pickup to a good site, and started looking for just the right one. I spotted one standing alone and thought it looked perfect. The tree was about 300 yards away, and as I started walking

toward it, heavy snow began to fall. I cut down the tree quite easily, but on the return trip to the truck, I twisted my ankle on a fallen limb and heard a snap. It didn’t hurt too much so I kept walking. Just then a rancher confronted me—he said the tree was on his property, and was a landmark. He wanted $200 or threatened to call the sheriff. I was going to call and verify that information, but found I must have dropped my cell somewhere in the deepening snow,

and after 200 yards of walking, the snow still falling, I had no idea where it was.. Maybe wouldn’t have worked up there anyway. The rancher was becoming irate by then so I just handed him the money I had, which came to $199.95. As I was driving home in the heavy snowfall, I missed a fork in the road and slid in the ditch—cut the tire on something—good thing I had a spare. Got back on the road, but not sure it was the right one. Saw a sign, Crip-

ple Creek, 30 miles. Well, I knew how to get home from Cripple Creek, so I followed that road, which took me 29 miles out of the way. I arrived home at 10 p.m., kids and wife all in bed— the tree will have to wait til morning. Finally got the tree set up, and it looked good. That afternoon my wife wanted to know where all those bugs had come from, that were crawling through the house, and “What was that awful smell!? Guess the dogs and coyotes were using the tree as a scent

post, and it was full of insects too. I called the exterminator, and he said we would have to leave the house for three days while he killed the bugs and got rid of the odor, and told us to put our dog in a kennel. His services cost $250, well worth it; the kennel $95. We didn’t fare so well at the motel—we had requested a discount because of our dilemma, and since it was the Christmas season. He said he couldn’t help us as he was booked solid during the holidays

anyway. We ended up staying in a friend’s basement, which didn’t smell any better than our home. When the pain in my ankle got much worse, I had to be taken to he hospital, where X-rays showed a small fracture in my ankle. Smart Home Savvy: 6 Ways to Add Technology to Your Living Spaces (StatePoint) A smart, connected home is what’s in style. In fact, since 2014, research shows smart technology has increased in priority during renovations, especially for first-time home buyers. Wondering what options are out there? Here are six ways to add tech to your space. 1. Stay Cool and Comfortable. Certain smart thermostats on the market today intuitively understand when to turn on heating or cooling equipment based on your home’s unique energy profile, the weather outside and thousands of other data points — making sure you’re comfortable 24/7. Some units even claim to save homeowners enough energy to pay for themselves. 2. Design the Perfect Shower. The first

Wi-Fi/cloud-based digital shower on the market, U by Moen shower, allows users to precisely set shower temperature and flow with an in-shower digital controller or from their smartphone, thanks to a helpful app. Need extra snooze time? Power on the shower from bed and it will alert you when it’s ready. Picky about your shower preferences? The ability to set up to 12 custom presets in the app ensures you get your perfect shower every time. 3. Keep Your Eye on Fido. Ever wonder

what your dog is up to while you’re away at work? Now, there are fun, tech-based ways to check in on furry friends. HD pet cameras enable owners to monitor their pets with a wide-angle view, day and night. Some even offer an app that allows owners to toss a treat to their dogs or play a game of catch. Plus, a barking sensor sends notifications to your phone so you can see what’s happening and calm down your pooch via two-way chat. 4. Be Hands-Off in the Kitchen. Imagine the convenience

of having a kitchen faucet turn water on or off, without a touch. Faucets with Moen’s MotionSense Wave touchless technology feature single-sensor hands-free activation, allowing users to easily activate the faucet with the wave of a hand. It’s perfect for when your hands are too full or messy to turn on the faucet, and also helps minimize the spread of dirt and germs, since you don’t have to touch the faucet. 5. Create the Right Ambiance. The perfect lighting is now right at your fingertips. Instead

of a regular incandescent bulb, smart lightbulbs allow homeowners to control lighting with a few taps on your smartphone or tablet. Want to turn on lights when you’re away or adjust their brightness and color? No problem. What’s more, the bulbs last longer and even help save energy. 6. Make Food Prep Smarter. Not sure how to blend your favorite concoction? Vitamix Ascent Series blenders have you covered. These high-performance, Bluetooth-enabled blenders are compatible with a

family of Self-Detect Containers that sense which container is being used and automatically adjust settings. The Ascent Series machines also connect and communicate with the Vitamix Perfect Blend Smart Scale and Recipe App to seamlessly guide you through recipe preparation. From customizing your kitchen to creating a luxurious bathroom, smart home devices can now cater to your preferences, elevating everyday experiences.

Laugh Tracks in the Dust

Milo Yield Well, the deer season is still underway as I write and I’m still “venison-less.” It’s my own fault for taking such a nonchalant approach to deer hunting in my old age. If I put more effort into it, I’d probably had my deer. As it is, all I’ve shot was an unobservant coyote that wandered in front of my ground blind. Also, the “Patient Duo” of neighborhood brothers finally scored two evenings ago. The older brother harvested his first deer — a doe so fat that I have no idea what she’d been eating. Must have been out of a corn crib. I wuz happy for the young man because all the venison will be devoured by his extended family in short order. *** I like giving Christmas gifts, but I do not enjoy Christmas gift shopping. As per normal, I ain’t bought a single gift for anyone yet, but the calendar will force me into shopping soon. *** Here’s a funny I liked. The owner of an agribusiness wuz approached by one of his women employees who adamantly stated, “Sir, all the other women in this company are suing you for groping and fondling. Since you haven’t done that to me. I’m suing you for discrimination.” ***

Two old farmers were sitting in the local bar and grill jawing about how tough it is these days to make their retirement incomes stretch through the month to pay for all their everyday needs. After a few beers, one of the pair said if things didn’t start looking up soon, he might have to go on the Medicare G plan. “Medicare G? Never heard of it. How does that work,” his buddy asked. The first old guy replied, “Say you can no longer take care of yourself and need long-term-care, but the government says there is no nursing home care available for you. That’s when you opt for Medicare Part G. The plan gives anyone 75 or older a gun (Medicare Part G. The G stands for gun) and one bullet. You use that one bullet to shoot one worthless politician, pedophile, terrorist, etc. “This means you will be sent to prison for the rest of your life where you will receive three meals a day, a roof over your head, central heating and air conditioning, cable TV, a library, gym, and all the health care you need. Need new teeth? No problem. Need glasses? That’s great. Need a hearing aid, new hip, knees, kidney, lungs, sex change, or heart? They are all covered! “As an added bonus, your kids can come and visit you at least as often as they do now! “And, who will be paying for all of this? The same government that just told you it can’t afford for you

to go into a nursing home. And now, because you are a prisoner, you don’t have to pay any more income taxes! Is this a great country or what?” I have to say, that’s a novel way to solve the Long-Term Care problem. *** I thought about going to the effort to pen a new Christmas poem, but I only thought about it for a second before discarding the idea. Then, lo’, out of the blue my Colorado friend Jerry Sutliff mailed me a Christmas poem with instructions to use it if I wanted to. Well, I do, and here goes: CHRISTMAS EVE STYLE It seems like every year brings changes In the fashions we’re expected to wear. But, Santa never updates any of his clothes. I guess old Santa Claus just doesn’t care. For centuries he’s stayed with basic red Trimmed with white, as everyone knows. He seems quite content to continue wearing The same old familiar Christmas clothes. Santa avoids expensive electronics, too, And his transportation is always the same. Never changing or updating his open sleigh, Powered by reindeer he knows by name. Santa doesn’t own a radio or TV set Bombarding him daily with automobile ads

You Can’t Take Them With You! By Taryn Gilliespie Rural Messenger More than 116,000 men, women and children are awaiting life-saving organ transplants, according to Donate Life – America. In the nation, 22 people die each and every day waiting for an organ transplant. Many of us are often misinformed about the facts of organ donation. Organ donation is a serious matter—life and death serious for many people. One organ donor can save up to eight lives and change the life of at least 50 people (National Foundation for Transplants). These statistics speak for themselves. I first started learning about organ donation when I was about 11 years old. My mother’s sister, my Aunt Beth, was having serious medical issues. This went on for quite a while, and I remember people talking often about the severity of her illness. They discovered that she needed a liver transplant upon many other medications and diagnoses. She was checked into KU Medical Center in Kansas City, where she stayed for almost six months. In this time, doctors treated her illness as well as they could, while waiting for a donated liver to become available to save her life. We waited and waited, and in this time I started thinking about organ donation at a whole new level. Someone I loved was dying, and there wasn’t anyone who was registered as a donor with a match? This is when I started thinking and praying to myself when I would pass a car accident, first that the victim of the accident was all right, and second, if they weren’t, that they were a donor. Thoughts like these don’t come unless you have been put through a situation where a loved one is wasting away waiting on a transplant. Eventually, Aunt Beth did get a liver, and doctors did the procedure, but she very quickly started getting much worse. This was a sign that her body was rejecting the liver and it didn’t work. We were back to square

one waiting again. Then, again a liver came through. Doctors questioned whether they should do the surgery. They worried surgery might not be effective because she was so sick. They decided to try, but unfortunately, again, her body rejected the liver. Her body was just too sick to accept the liver. At this point, I started to question God. He brought us a liver, and it didn’t work, and when the second liver came and Aunt Beth was too sick, why did God not place that liver with another patient? Could someone else’s life have been saved because of this one liver that had no

chance from the start for Aunt Beth? Since this experience, I have been a strong advocate for organ donation. The way I see it, if I am dead and there was no saving me, if doctors can use my parts to save others, why think twice about that? It is a no brainer. The U.S. Government Information on Organ Donation and Transplantation states that anyone, regardless of age or medical history, can sign up to be a donor. About 94% of U.S. adults support organ donation, but only 54% are actually signed up to be donors. Even starting out with something as simple as blood

donation is a help and can save many. I have also personally looked into living donations, as well. Living donation started due to the lack of donors to save those needing a transplant. Patients needing either a kidney or liver transplant can have a live donor, and both parties are expected to come out with great life expectancy (Donate Life). A little later in my life, maybe 15, I met a young man named Travis. Travis was born with kidney issues and had been sick on and off growing up. As the years went on, Travis started to become more and more sick. He is now in need of a kidney. The waiting

list for any person in need of an organ is crazy long, and many fear they will never make it before a matching organ becomes available. This stress wears on Travis, as well as his family and friends. He is currently very close to the front of the list, but people can be added to the list ahead of him at any point due to the severity of their issues. Travis has made the trip to Kansas City a few times hoping that the kidney being brought in was a match, only to get a call when they were about half way there telling them it’s not a match, sending him back to his everyday life. Travis is now taking

dialysis treatments for three hours every day to try to keep his body well. I have started to go through the process to find out if I am a match to do a living donation for him. This process could take a while and is very specific, so they know they are making the right decision before operating. It is up to us to stand up and become donors. It is our job to make this happen, and it goes deeper than saying yes to the lady at the DMV when she wants to put a little red heart on your license. ROGER'S VIEW FROM THE HILLS: INJUSTICE SYSTEM “INJUSTICE ANYWHERE IS A THREAT TO JUSTICE EVERYWHERE.” Martin Luther King Jr. If there is any justice that is utilized against citizens for the purpose of political power there is no justice at all. The rights of the Constitution are rendered useless when government in the form of a Federal agency, Federal Prosecutors Office, and a judge come together to keep the truth from a jury. And when the jury sees the truth through the actions of the government and renders a not guilty verdict, not just once but two times, and the government tries to keep people in jail and try again for the outcome they want THIS IS UNJUST. Yet you hear nothing about the trails in Nevada from the news media. Why is the attempt to ruin and jail people who stood up under the Constitution still being attacked by entrenched bureaucrats? Why has the Justice Department not put an end to all this? We don’t know. Twice now the juries have found not guilty several supporters of the Bundy’s of Nevada, who stood up against SWAT teams from the Bureau of Land Management, and have been jailed and tried ever since. What form of government is it that is all for stepping on citizens in the West and ignoring law breakers in the East? A government out of control. The judge in the

Roger's View From The Hills case in Nevada did not allow arguments on the 1st Amendment, 2nd Amendment, 4th Amendment, and pertinent facts in the case. It was obvious that the shock of the defense and the attitude of the judge was noted by the jury. But then this is a justice department that allowed a rancher and three companions to come under fire in Oregon when they were going to attend a meeting with the county sheriff over the standoff on the Mulhuer National Wildlife Refuge. And allowed the rancher to be shot in the back as he struggled to walk in a snow drift. Several other shots were put into the man and then agents stood over the body and laughed. Where is the justice in this case? Where is the outrage and investigation? What you read and hear on the media is a set of facts that have been put there by the government and very few have reported on the truth. How does this affect you? Ask the farmer that is being held up by the government for farming a wheat field that has a mud puddle

in it. The fines now stand at over 1 million dollars. The Idaho farmer who built a pond on his own land who has to go to prison for 18 months being convicted of violating ‘rules’ not law. If the government or media decide that you are in violation of some rule made up by an agency in a back room, you will come to understand that injustice for one is injustice for all. The Bundy’s Trial in Las Vegas has taken a turn that no one expected. the witnesses, judge, jury, and other officials have been tutored on the Constitution by one of the Bundy’s who is acting as his own attorney. It has been now established that the government lied, withheld evidence, and brought the fight to the Bundy’s escalating a fight that was intended to go through the courts as an over reach of the Federal government and the Government response was to move SWAT teams into position for a confrontation. The water improvements on the land in question, paid for by the Bundy’s, were wrecked, and cattle were killed and buried. As result the defendants who were held in jail for 23 months and treated as public enemy number one, have been released so they do not have to be separated from their families and drug into court in chains every day. In the mean time the agent who shot Lavon Fincum, who was drawing fire away from his truck that had a woman and teenager inside, has not been charged with murder and the Federal Agen-

DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY: The Freemount Church

John Marshall Celebrations are planned in 2019 for a sesquicentennial, the 150th birthday of the founding of Lindsborg and to recognize communities in the Smoky Valley that help to anchor its heritage. Here is the first of some occasional history, of what brought the settlers here, how they managed their hard lives, and why they stayed. – JM * The Swedes arrived long ago, and among the first and most solid structures to go up were the churches. They built the first one a mile north of the river on a plain among the low hills of the Smoky Valley. The walls were sandstone carved from the bluffs of the river, and mortar was made from volcanic ash deposits along Indian Creek. The weather was unkind and they fashioned a roof quickly, with branches, to keep the dirt floor from turning to mud. This was Freemount, as it was first spelled, in 1870, the incubation of a Swedish community of settlers west and south of Lindsborg. It was the first building among the three churches established that year. In a pure sense, a church is a whole body of Christian believers and by this, the Freemount Lutheran Church had actually been established a year earlier. Four families had met in front of a river bank dugout, decid-

ed to conduct their own service, found a Bible, sang from the Swedish Psalm Book, and prayed – the first religious service held in that part of the country. A month later, in June, 38 settlers decided formally to establish a church and to build their house of worship. It stands in Freemount today just off 8th Avenue, a proud, squat predecessor to the great church west in the yard beyond. Here is a place of two churches, now showing their Christmas wreaths and garland, the small cemetery just to the north, elements in a proud place now breathing a history of 148 years. It speaks of the grace and devotion that carried generations, often by faith alone, through times that often seemed to offer nothing more than the ceaseless cadence of suffering. Eight miles on foot or horseback to one store, 15 to another. Blizzards froze men in their wagons. Drought cracked skin and soil. They first hacked the ground with axes and dropped seed in the slits in a fragile hope for “sod corn.” There was a relentless threat of disease, or injury, the plague of insects, the nagging grip of hunger. Still the settlers had their church, their faith. * Sixteen years ago on December 9 the old church, the settlers and their history, were commemorated with the dedication of Lindsborg’s 23rd Wild Dala: The Freemount Filly, the first outof-town addition to a renowned Dala herd that now is nearly three dozen. Verne Lundquist, the venerable CBS sportscaster and descendant of the settlers, sponsored

the commemorative horse and spoke at the dedication. The late Eldon Swensson created the designs and painted the body of the horse. “I decided to concentrate on images related to the founding and early years of the congregation,” Swensson wrote in a memo about the work. “The side (view) of the first church would be included… the names of the first four pastors: 1) lay preacher J.P. Rodell; 2) A.W. Dahlsten, 18691873; 3) Olof Olsson, 1874-1876, and 4) J. Seleen, 1876-1897, would be included on a stylized old-fashioned cleric collar. The stone lintel over the front door gives the 1870 date of the building of the first church.” Also on the Dala a likeness of the first church itself, the names of the immigrants’ home Swedish provinces (Smaland, Dalarna, Ostergotland, and Skane) and the three spellings of the name of the church: Fremont, Free Mount and now, Freemount – and another reminder of the early days, the high native grass about the legs of the horse, and the images of a family arriving at church in a horse and wagon. * The little building was almost lost. Over the first seven years membership in the little church had grown to 265 and they began building a second Church, a massive stone and brick structure that reached into the sky over the bottomland. Pictures from those early days indicate that it may have been twice the size of the current large church now on site, with rows of seven four-story stained glass windows on the north and south sides, and a massive belfry and spire soaring 100, even 140 feet high. Inside, the sanctuary yawned, enormous. Some of the congregation wanted to raze the original church. In the shadow of the new, massive build-

ing it seemed so tiny and minimal, almost embarrassing. But it stayed. In the summer of 1926 a fire caused by lightning gutted the massive building and left the shreds of its remaining walls crippled. In front of the wreckage and smoldering ruins stood the small, original church untouched. The Freemount congregation would rebuild. Eighteen months later, in December 1927, the congregation’s third church – which is there today – was dedicated. The small stone church, the vision and work of 38 unshakable settlers generations ago, remains squat in the foreground. It has been touched up, refurbished, equipped with temperature and climate controls. There were rows of pews from the second church, saved as people ran in through the fire to save what they could grab. A heavy oak case with glass windows, pulpit lamps from the burned church, old books: BIBELEN… Kyrko Handbok … Alfwegren Hvilostumer … HYMNALs… Sondags Skolbok. Bookends were made from molten metal of the incinerated church bell. The bell’s clappers (one for funerals, one for services) were saved, intact. There was original china from the old church, an offering basket, a Freemount Band uniform, desks from the old school house, and on a revolving stand of metal frames, a photo history of the church and congregation, nearly complete. There was an original plat for the town of Freemount, a dozen long blocks, with Garfield, Main, First, Second and Third streets south to north, and Grant, Washington, Lincoln and Church Streets west to east. The Council Grove Smoky Valley and Western Railroad cut through the north part of town, between Second and First.

There was a post office. In the church a woven, wicker-like object, oval, with rope handles and a wooden top hinged in the middle. A sign: “This basket was used as a suitcase by Christine Rapp on the way from Sweden to America in the 1880s.” It was next to a small heavy box: “Chas. Sundgren’s father’s trunk. He had his valuables in this trunk when he came from Sweden.” * There is an inscrip-

tion stone from the destroyed second church. It was carved from rock quarried at Hedlund farm in Andover, and it took several teams of horses to move it to the old building for installation. In the center: SVENSK EV. LUTH. KYRKA. 1881 The church was burned to rubble, and this stone – it was on the east side of the tower – fell several stories, and didn’t break.

A throwback Christmas In the old days, the weeks before Christmas would have been crazy. These times have brought many changes, so it does seem things have taken a decidedly quieter turn. Of course, I am still the crazy Christmas person in our family. I can’t get enough of anything holiday. I drive with the all carol channel on my radio. I have more than a dozen Christmas movies that I watch while cooking or cleaning. There are entire television channels that are dedicated to people like me, with a different Christmas movie every night of December. My family suffers through it, rolling their eyes most of the time. I stopped by the mall (not quite sure what I was thinking) and the line to see Santa made me reminiscent. As I sit writing this, I am looking at a Santa photo from years ago. It is one taken in 1947 of my then two year old brother looking into Santa’s eyes. This photo got me to thinking about all the changes that the elves have made over the years to the decorations adorning the background of these iconic pictures. My brother is dressed in a coat that could be current day, and Santa, of course, is timeless. This is where any likeness to present day abruptly ends. Let me start with the tree that is right next to Santa.

It is white wood instead of the traditional scotch pine, but who am I to judge. What really makes me wonder is what is in this white wood, leafless tree. Towards the top is a pair of dotted, fuzzy dice. Interesting you say. Not nearly as interesting as the stuffed dog right underneath them. Then there is a large balloon. Pretty random. How to put the final touches on this wonderful collection you ask? Gobs and larger gobs of angel hair. This looks like the industrial strength, pure fiberglass angel hair that I remember from my childhood years later. Anyone out there above the age of 50 should remember the stuff. If you were lucky enough to help place this on the tree, your fingers would itch and burn for days. What wonderful memories we have, huh. I am trying to figure out why this postWorld War II era photo doesn’t reflect a more festive vibe. We have all likely seen the movies It’s A Wonderful Life that came out the year before and Miracle On 34th Street, that came out that year. The Douglas fir Christmas trees in those films were decked out in Depression glass ornaments and silver tinsel. I guess the elves at our local Filenes store were still rationing the merriment. Thank goodness “Clarence” wasn’t counting on bells in this tree to get his wings.
