Cindy Hyde-Smith visits JCRW membership drive meeting By Linda Cranford The Jones County Republican Women’s August monthly meeting highlighted their annual membership drive. The guest speaker was Cindy Hyde-Smith, who became the first female Commissioner of Agriculture in 2011, following a 12-year career as Mississippi State Senator for District 39. President Jane McArthur, who is serving her second term as president, recognized several of the past presidents who were present at the meeting including Betty Anderson, Ann Rose, Joan Martin, Stella Hall, Mary Ann Stevens, Mary Jo Wedgeworth, and Martha Sims. A number of past president’s scrap books were available for members and guests to view. McArthur spoke of the past history of the Jones County Republican Women. The JCRW is one of the largest chapters in Mississippi with 206 total members. Men are welcome in the chapter, and are considered to be chapter associates. There are 161 Republican women, 44 associates, and one honorary member. JCRW received their charter on April 10, 1963. In 1962, Gloria Ball and Jody Tillery were helping with the campaign of Rubel Phillips, who was running for governor, when they were encouraged by an organizational group of Republican women to start a chapter in the Jones County area. Ball and Tillery went to work on the idea and encouraged other women to join them in their efforts. Among the first members of the organization were Betty Derrick, Dell Scopper, Mae Moye, Joy DeGrummond, Billie Boone, Betty Howard, Jean Lindsey, and Jean Christian – who became the first president of the chapter. The women first met in homes, ate sack lunches, and slowly grew the chapter. As Smith began to speak to the group, she exclaimed, “You (JCRW) are the benchmark in Mississippi. Everyone wants to be like Jones County. Thanks for giving all of us an example to follow.” Smith spoke to the group about some of her successes during her four-year tenure as Commissioner of Agriculture and several issues facing Mississippi’s agriculture. “We live in a world of cellphones and apps,” declared Smith. She said they have established

several apps including one for the State Fair, Farmers Markets throughout the state, and Ag Tourism in Mississippi. During the State Fair this year they were able to provide for the Wrangler Network, which covered the rodeo from start to finish. They also now have the capabilities to provide push notifications for food safety alerts, as well as directions for animal handlers during the Livestock Shows. There has been $3.5 million of improvements made to the coliseum, including new elevators, and new restrooms. “I have received money from the legislature to now build a new Trade Mart, which is my money maker,” said Smith. “It will be attached to the coliseum and will give us 40,000 more square feet for additional show rooms. We don’t have to build it, and they will come, they’re already there. It stays full for us, now.” Smith said it would have cost approximately $8 million to renovate the present building, and only about $10 million to $12 million to rebuild it. “It was a no brainer to choose to build a new Trade Mart,” said Smith. Addressing the fire at the Mississippi Ag Museum, which destroyed three buildings on November 14, 2014, Smith said they are meeting with architects and designers to rebuild the barn, veterinarian infirmary, and maintenance shop. “We’re going to come back bigger and better than before,” exclaimed Smith. She also spoke about the threat of the Avi-

an Influenza to Mississippi. “This is the bird flu,” explained Smith, “a disease that can wipe out millions of birds – turkeys, guineas, ducks, chickens, and others. It devastated Iowa and Minnesota. It cost Iowa 300 million dollars. It has affected 21 states.” She said the heat kills the viruses so Mississippi is okay for now. “But, ducks and geese are about to start flying south through the Mississippi flyway. This is a highly contagious disease. Trucks can carry the disease from poultry house to poultry house. You can’t even walk from one house to the other without changing clothes and showering immediately. We are standing on alert in case we get that first outbreak. We pray that it doesn’t happen. But, I want to be prepared to contain this stuff and make it as least devastating as we possibly can.” Smith spoke of another issue that will not only affect Mississippi, but the entire country in the future. According to her studies in the future challenge of feeding a growing population, Smith said it is estimated that our population will grow from seven billion people to nine billion by 2050. “This is a 70 percent increase in agriculture production,” said Smith. “Food is going to be the new oil, and the land is going to be the new gold. I believe we are going to live to see this.” Smith said she is confident that with the available technology, which continues to improve, that Mississippi will be able to meet the demand. “But, someone’s going to have to be hustling to do it!”

I learned that many individuals with special needs include people who are hearing impaired, or who have speech impediments.” Willis said, in addition to her community service experience spurring her interest, in 2012 her mother married Joseph Wilkinson, and she now has two sisters, the youngest of which has special needs. “My step-sister, Alleigh, has eighty percent hearing loss in one ear, and fifty pereasy. cent hearing loss in the other,” explained Willis. “She PAYMENTS wears hearing-aids, and struggles to speak clearly, AS LOW AS but I’ve seen how speech $68.99 intervention has improved MONTH Husqvarna Z246 her ability to communicate, • Engine manufacturer: and participate socially and Briggs & Stratton academically. • Engine Name: Endurance “Tomorrow, I move into series V-Twin my dorm at the University • Endurance V-Twin of Southern Mississippi, Engine where I will be an HonPrice: $2,699.95 ors College Student,” said Abby. “I am so grateful to Sertoma and its members for supporting my college education goals. Neat Used Things for Sale

My name is David Livingston and I am a Candidate for Constable of District 3 Jones County. I have lived in the Glade Community for the past 43 years and graduated from Northeast Jones. I served in the National Guard from 1990-1996. I am a State Level 2 Certified Law Enforcement Officer, Former K9 Deputy for the Jones County Sheriff’s Department for 10 years, and currently part time officer with SOSO P.O. I am currently the owner and operator of SPORTWORKS K9, Where I raise and train working dogs for Police & Search & Rescue. The Constable’s primary duties are serving Justice Court papers, however the Constable has the authority and obligation to maintain order and uphold the laws of the state of Mississippi. If elected Constable of District 3, my primary objectives will not only be to serve Justice Court process but also to assist local

and state agencies in keeping our communities safe. By being a life long resident of Jones County and with my experience in law enforcement I know that I can make a difference in our communities in all matters of criminal activity. My opponent is running on the fact that I have a full time job and will not be there. We both currently have full time jobs. I never remember having a conversation with my opponent what my plans were if I was elected Constable of Dist #3. I can assure the voters

of Dist #3 that I will be there and have been there over the last 13 years. David Livingston is the one that you see at ever NEJ football game away or home assisting with security for our kids and grand kids. I do not currently receive any pay for helping with security. Voters need to vote on who has been there the past 13 years at school events and not vote on promises. Today more than ever we need someone to be that Liaison who is certified Law enforcement to assist the community and law enforcement on a day to day basis. I will be the voice for the community and the gap between community and local and state law enforcement. I would like to thank GOD, my wife Sarah, and my 2 children, Zachary and Blake. Vote David Livingston on Aug 4th Jones County Constable Dist #3.

Vote David Livingston on August 25 Jones County Constable - District 3.

Dial challenges opponent to debate

Longtime supervisor sets record straight about termination

Four years ago, Beat 4 Supervisor Andy Dial didn’t want to give details about why he fired four employees right after he was reelected. That’s because it was a personnel matter. But now that his opponent has made it a political matter, Dial wants to set the record straight. And he challenged David Scruggs to a public debate before the Aug. 25 Republican primary runoff. “I didn’t fire him because he ran against me,” Dial said. “I fired him because he was more concerned about politicking than getting his work done. That’s strictly a violation of personnel policy.” Dial said that Scruggs and his crew were at the Chevron off Interstate 59 in Ellisville for 1 hour and 15 minutes on the Thursday before the 2011 election while the dump truck they were in was parked

out front. “There are a lot of issues “Anyone can run for office that will affect the county that wants to,” Dial said. “It’s a for many years to come,” free country. My concern was said Dial, who is seeking a taxpayer money being wasted sixth term. and that $200,000 truck not Dial said his opponent being used for what it was has been telling voters that bought for. Those are the kinds of issues Dial wants to discuss at a debate. Scruggs didn’t respond directly to the debate challenge, but he did say he wasn’t interested in a debate. “He had a chance to explain it all when he fired us and he didn’t,” Scruggs said. Scruggs got 103 more votes (1,3551,252) than the longtime incumbent in the four-man primary election on Aug. 4. Glen Robertson and Allen Busby got a total of 712 votes. Scruggs, who worked for Dial for six years, admitted that revenge was part of the reason he put his name on the ballot against his former boss again this year. “That had a little something to do with it,” he said with a smile at the courthouse after the results were called out. “It’s time for a change.”

JCJC’s Maroon Typhoon previews “A Rock Fantasy” at Band Exhibition By Teresa McCreery, JCJC Media-Public Relations Director The Jones County Junior College Maroon Typhoon Marching Band is off to a “Fantasy” filled year as it begins the marching season with a sneak preview at the annual Band Exhibition, Tuesday, August 25, at 7 p.m. in the Sim Cooley/Bobcat Stadium. The public is invited to this free event to get a glimpse at the “Rock Fantasy” show directed by JCJC Interim Director of Bands, Jeff Cannon and created by former Director of Bands, Dr. Jonathan Helmick. “I was thrilled with the response to this year’s show concept,” said Cannon. “The Maroon Typhoon will take us on a musical journey with a young man dreaming of rock stardom!” Featured soloist, sophomore from Gautier, Bryce Kinzer said he is excited to have the spotlight on him for the French horn solo in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” “The solo itself is not difficult; the difficulty lies in making something musically beautiful from it,” said Kinzer. “I love the high pressure of having a solo with the entire crowd listening to the music coming out my horn.” Band members shared their excitement about performing a rock-and-roll show with hits like, “Carry On My Wayward Son” by Kansas, “Brick in the Wall” by Pink Floyd, “Hot for Teacher” by Van Halen, “Seven Bridges Road” by the Eagles, “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac and “Dust In the Wind” by Kansas with “Bohemian Rhapsody Reprise” by Queen as the finale. “I think the show is great. Obviously a classic rock show will have a lot of music taken from the guitar which sometimes doesn’t translate easily, but that’s the challenge of it all,” said Kinzer. Touch of Gold dancers and the color guard will be featured in a very different way than in previous years with more visual props and they are included throughout the show. “The show is really energetic, forcing the audience to watch us. They won’t want to leave because it is so captivating,” said Touch of Gold captain, Madison Aultman of Sumrall. The five color guard captains shared they also like being included more in the show, along with the use of more props, backdrops and voice overs in the show. Sumrall’s Alexus Floyd said there are a lot of moments in the show that give her chills. While Toni Leverette of Terry credits their choreographer, Evan Williams for giving the color guard a fresh look. “The choreography is intense and challenging but Evan makes the challenging routines look simple to perform. He has made us re-think how we perform too,” said Leverette. Maroon Typhoon fans will also see a new “ look” with new uniforms and a different type of “step” in this year’s show as the band prepares for the McDonald’s® Thanksgiving Parade in Chicago, Illinois on Thanksgiving Day. The band was introduced to the military style of marching during

but they have been real troopers and I think people will really enjoy their 2015 production of, ‘A Rock Fantasy!’ The students have been very nice and very receptive to my sometimes unorthodox methods.” Students admit, learning Cannon’s style was difficult at first. However, Kinzer said he realizes how Cannon’s methods have helped him personally and the band as a whole. “A common theme Mr. Cannon has preached is versatility, and he is absolutely correct. A band student needs to be versatile. Mr. Cannon’s style can make it difficult to learn drill as a band, but marching technique has improved massively.” Aultman added, “He (Cannon) is so passionate about his work he really wants us to look good for us as a group, and I really appreciate that!” Sophomore drum major from Laurel, Lydia Myers said she is thrilled with this year’s show and is excited to have Cannon working with the Maroon Typhoon this year. “He is the parade master! We’re going to rock Chicago and everywhere we go!” said Myers. “I look forward to another great year with the Maroon Typhoon!” Cannon agrees this season is going to “rock” because of JCJC’s assistant directors

Improving depth and overall team speed will go a long way in securing the Braves a successful season. Richton comes into the season with a veteran offense and a defence that looks to replace a few key positions in the front seven and secondary. Sorry my old friend coach Chris Fortenberry, but... De’Andre Johnson. Johnson was kicked off the FSU team for hitting a 21-year-old female in a bar. Mississippi schools are not the only college programs looking for a starting quarterback. The weekend papers reported that Nick Saban was not pleased with any of his quarterbacks, nor was South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier. Auburn is telling the world that Jeremy Johnson is their man while LSU and Georgia are looking for the right fit to run their team’s offense. Last year’s national champion Ohio State is also having a quarterback battle as all three quarterbacks are back, and all played with success. Braxton Miller was moved to wide receiver last week, so now head coach Urban Meyer has two to choose from in either J.T. Barrett or Cardale Jones. Meyer is in a win-win situation as he will have a proven winner no matter whom he chooses. Quarterback talk this weekend was not strictly about the college game. The New York Jets lost their quarterback as he broke his jaw in a fight with his own teammate. Tim Tebow played for the first time in two years in leading Philadelphia over Indianapolis, and Tebow mania was out in full force in the city of brotherly love. Tebow completed 6-of-10 passes for 69 yards and ran for 15 yards and a score. He is in the running for a backup job with the Eagles. The top two picks of the pro football draft, Jameis Winston of the Tampa Bay Bucs and Marcus Mariota of the Tennessee Titans, were tossed into the fire Saturday night. Though both their teams lost, they both showed flashes of greatness. Winston was 9-of-19 for 134 yards and rushed for a TD. Mariota threw an interception, which is a rare occurrence in itself, for the former Oregon signal caller. He completed 7-of-8 passes for 96 yards. Another banner headline was that San Diego Charger quarterback Phillip Rivers signed a contract extension worth $84 million. Even former quarterback Terrell Pryor made headlines as he is making a comeback with the Cleveland Browns as a wide receiver. And speaking of the Browns, when was the last time we saw a headline on Johnny Football? Come on back, Johnny—football fans love you. Contact Dale at [email protected]

By Dale McKee Well, August is here, and that means football fans are gearing up like baseball fans do in spring. Your favorite team has yet to be defeated, and you’re hopeful that loss column stays blank as you look for a banner year. Everywhere you go these days, fans are anxious for the first game. Ole Miss had their Fan Day and 6,000 showed up for autographs and a short moment with their favorite star. The University of Tennessee saw 40,000 fans show up for a scrimmage this past weekend. Football fills the air. USM fans are looking forward to their home opener on Sept. 5, MSU fans have circled Sept. 12 for the LSU game, and Ole Miss fans are looking ahead to Sept. 19 when they battle Alabama. Those are some of several dates that will be marked on the family calendar. Spoke to a USM fan the other day, and he joked that Dak and MSU better watch out. You know, that is the way fans should feel this time of the year. Every fan has a certain date to look forward to. USM will be much better than the team MSU manhandled a year ago. But the loyal USM fan knows down deep that beating MSU will be a tall chore. Stranger things have happened, I suppose. It is fun this time of year to talk smack whether it is from your junior high or your favorite pro team. Following football is us-against-you, and having a favorite team to support is what makes the season fun. Quarterbacks all over the headlines I was reading several Mississippi newspapers this past Sunday, and the talk centered on who was going to play quarterback. We know that in Starkville, Dak is back, so that job is filled for the time being. Ole Miss is still having a quarterback battle, but it’s next to impossible to find out much about what is really going on. Most of the Rebels’ practices are closed to the media, so not much information is forthcoming. About all we do know is that Junior college transfer Chad Kelly and sophomores DeVante Kincaid and Ryan Buchanan are battling for the starting spot. This past week USM coach Todd Monken said he could see playing both his hopefuls. Last year’s starter Nick Mullens and TCU transfer Tyler Mathews continue to compete, and both have the talent to start. Also making the news was East Mississippi CC as they landed a former Florida State quarterback in
