Family enjoys summer in Evergreen with a bike ride to Montgomery Hill By Frank Shortt Times Staff Writer ith summer vacation in our midst some might have a difficult time finding interesting things to do, but if we look around we might be surprised at all the activities around us in Evergreen Valley including bike riding. There is a family in the environs of Evergreen who is setting a wonderful example of trying to find healthful and safe things to do. There are several things that set this family apart from the average family. The father, Elmer, is a male nurse at a local hospital. On his off days he may be seen running, hiking, or bicycling around the Evergreen neighborhood. He enjoys the qualities of staying healthy. His attitude, reflecting his healthy state of being, is always upbeat. The mother, Catherine, is a homeschool educator. She has a pre-teen daughter as well and one of elementary school age. She teaches piano and voice lessons to each of them. Both are members of a swim team. Both are bright, and share the same healthy attitude as their parents. Before becoming a stay-at-home mom, Catherine was also a nurse as well as a teacher. She is well aware what makes a well-rounded, healthy child. The children, Calyn and Elyana are very bright students. They are

Both children are involved in choir singing, music, and just simply being with children of their own age, doing what healthy children do. Although the children are tech-savvy, they do not spend hours at any one technical activity. Their days are taken up with positive things that lead them to a well-rounded life. This family enjoys outings to family camps in the Santa Cruz Mountains whenever the occasion arises. While they are there, they take

advantage of all the physical activities offered. The family enjoys hiking, trail riding, swimming, and a host of other family activities. Sometimes, they go to Leoni Meadows in El Dorado County, (a Christian centered retreat), to partake of the spiritual and physical activities offered there. This is a time to enjoy fresh mountain air along with a time to meditate and reflect about their past endeavors. Many evenings, when Elmer is not called to work, the family dons their bicycle-riding habits. Catherine makes sure that each are properly attired for the outing. After Elmer checks all the bicycles, mak-

Mailbox Poachers threaten redwoods Dear Editor, Thanks to early conservation efforts, vast areas of prehistoric redwoods have been protected from logging where they survive in our State despite generations of an industrial economy. These redwood forests are now under threat and help is needed if we want these ancient trees to continue into the future. Poachers are encroaching into protected government and private land to steal the burls from these

trees. By removing their protective layers of bark, these ancient redwoods lay exposed to disease and pests killing them quickly over time. The burls are sold to lumber mills or craftsmen and this beautiful decorative wood is ultimately used to create high end consumer goods. With the small number of rangers available to patrol the vast acreage of the forest, the risk of getting caught is limited. If convicted, current penalties can be easily incorporated into the cost of doing business with minimal impact on the profitability of this enterprise. The California Federation of

ing sure everything is safe, the tires all aired up, and the proper safety equipment is present, they begin their family bicycle outing. Sometimes they ride up Montgomery Hill, sometimes around the trails of Evergreen College, or any other place that will challenge their physical makeup. They try to arrive home before dark to prevent being hit by passing vehicles. The family believes they should do things together, be aware of each other, share victories, as well as occasional disappointments. To readers of the Evergreen Times, have a wonderful and safe summer! will reduce the spin of the courtroom doors for those convicted of this offense. We ask that Californians contact their State Assembly representative to stand with the California Federation of Women’s Clubs to protect our redwoods by passing Senate Bill 288. Jennifer Nickel Legislation & Public Policy State Chairman, California Federation of Women’s Clubs

Women’s Clubs is asking for support of California Senate Bill 288 which increases penalties of burl poaching to include up to one year of imprisonment and imposes stiff fines on poachers in the hopes of making those who would kill our redwoods think twice before seeking this avenue for enrichment. While this does not resolve the problem of catching poachers, it

Garbage pickup fees added to most property tax bills The good news: garbage bills are being eliminated. The bad news: homeowners will continue to pay fees and they will be tacked onto their county property tax bills starting this month. According to government officials, the switch to billing property tax bills is a cost saving measure for residents and the city.

Ed Bautista, spokesman for the Environmental Services Department, said that necessary upgrades to the billing system's old software are more expensive than moving to a new property tax billing system. The annual cost for garbage and recycling service will remain the same. Most residents use the standard 32-gallon cart, and they will continue to pay about $370 per year, although that fee now will be split between the two annual property tax installments. Should a homeowner request a larger cart, a supplemental bill will be sent directly from the city; and residents who downsize to a smaller garbage cart will receive a credit toward the next fiscal year's garbage and recycling service on their tax bill.

Homeowners can also request a prorated refund directly from the city if needed.

Deadly crash near Evergreen High School One person was killed and another person was injured when their truck crashed into a home Friday morning at 10:45 am on July 10, shutting down traffic on Ruby Ave. near Evergreen High School for several hours. The passenger, Alan Wright, 60, died at the scene, while the driver was taken to the hospital with major injuries. The passengers appear not to have been wearing their seatbelts. Evan Morra said he and three of his friends tried to free the occupants of the smoldering truck, but could not pry the door open because the hinges were heavily bent. "The driver was yelling out the window what happened, my back hurts. Get me out of here!" he said.

This year’s Festival featured vintage planes, including military aircraft, classic and custom cars and booths featuring science, technology, engineering, arts and math, thus the Festival’s name, S.T.E.A.M. It’s not just a car and aircraft show, it’s an event for the entire family,” said Mike and Susan Hennessey, event organizers. “Hot San Jose Nights is designed to be a very family friendly event with lots of entertainment and lots to do,” he said. The Festival, which doubled in size compared to last year’s event, provided a winning combination for fans mechanical movement, including robotics demonstrations, plane rides, and race cars. The Festival melded San Jose’s longtime affair with the automobile and new technology that may someday make driving obsolete. Visitors flocked to the Wounded Warriors booth to not only make a donation or pledge, but to also get a chance to win a 289 FIA Ford Cobra. Another popular car was Chris Del Carlo’s 2014 Dodge Challenger Shaker, one of only hundreds made that year. Visitors not yet of driving age were more enthralled with the radio-controlled model planes, replicas of World War II. But the hit of the show was a turbine powered jet that really impressed the crowd with its stunning speed and sound. Mike Hennessy said plans are already in the works for next year’s event, even bigger than this month’s successful show. “We can’t wait to announce what we have planned for next year.” he said.

Local school districts among ‘Career Pathways Trust Grant’ winners

C

alifornia State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson awarded $244 million in grants earlier this month to 40 programs that blend academic and career technical education. Among the district winners are the San Jose Evergreen Community College District and the East Side Union High School District.

The grants help connect employers with schools and train students for jobs in high-demand fields, such as health care, advanced manufacturing, information technology and software development. The grants are provided through the California Career Pathways Trust (CCPT) program, which is the largest program of its kind in the nation. The program has provided nearly $500 million in career tech grants over two years. “My top priority is to better prepare California students for college and careers in the 21st century,” Torlakson said. “Career Pathways provides vital support for innovative and effective career tech programs that keep students engaged in school and prepare them for real-world jobs.” The state Legislature created CCPT in 2013 and allocated $250 million for the program in the state’s 2013-14 budget. Last year, Torlakson awarded grants to 39 recipients. After seeing the pro-

gram’s popularity – the state received 123 applications requesting $709 million in CCPT grants last year – lawmakers approved an additional $250 million for this year. The program builds on Torlakson’s “Career Readiness Initiative.” “Career Pathways not only provides students with specific skills and training needed in modern industries but it also helps employers fill high-demand jobs created by the new economy,” Torlakson said. “These college and career ready students are what employers need to grow the regional economies of California.” CCPT-funded programs involve many dynamic sectors of California’s economy, such as health care, engineering, transportation, agriculture, and public service. Companies participating include Kaiser Permanente, the giant health maintenance organization; Qualcomm, a global firm that designs and markets wireless telecommunications products and services; and Intel Corp., a large multinational company that develops and manufactures semiconductor chips. Career Pathways programs connect education to business through work-based learning that allows students to explore and experience real jobs, under the mentorship of professionals in these industries. Work-based learning provides students with valuable opportunities to learn what is involved in various jobs, what kinds of skills are needed to be successful and whether they want to pursue a similar job for a career. The new awards are in addition to the $4.2 million announced in April. Among the 10 college districts, San Jose Evergreen Community College District has won in the “up to $15 million per award regional grant category.” The District won on behalf of

Connecting generations By Josh Seides Special to the Times magine what multi-generation family gatherings mean for children and grandchildren: the dinners, celebrations, movies, to name a few. What about technology lessons? For many years, as the founder of Technocademy, I have taught my grandparents how to use modern technology, ranging from cell phones to laptops. Realizing that my grandparents can’t be the only senior citizens and veterans needing help, I decided to address the generational technology education gap. In 2012, I founded Technocademy, Inc., a registered nonprofit that helps seniors and veterans learn to use modern technologies ranging from iPhones to Microsoft Office. After helping a woman set up her voicemail, 23 messages came flooding in from her daughter that had been sent months ago. It was a breakthrough moment realizing that seniors have been kept from communicating due to gaps in technology education. Initially, Technocademy began working exclusively with seniors through local assisted living and recreation centers in

Atlanta, Georgia, teaching over 700 seniors. In 2014, Technocademy partnered with United Way to send DVDs as part of “Operation T-CUP” to over 100,000 people, following that up in spring 2015 with the Technocademy Pocket Guide, distributed to over 50,000 people. Nicole Little, Activities Director at assisted living house Benton House Johns Creek, had this to say about the company, “”Very helpful! Technocademy generated a lot of excitement from our residents. We all need help with technology! My residents were able to follow instructions easily. The volunteers made the electronics less intimidating. The Technocademy, Inc. volunteers were very gentle in their approach and patient in their teaching to our seniors and we are very happy to have them!” In 2014 I expanded the target audience to encompass veterans by devising a series of Microsoft Office tutorials and classes to help them prepare to enter the workforce as well as reconnect with their families.
