The Lord’s Supper is a physical action, taught by Jesus, through which God acts to nourish, sustain, comfort, challenge, teach and assure us. The celebration of the Lord’s Supper nourishes our faith and stirs our imaginations to perceive the work of God and the power of the Gospel more clearly. It is an act that helps pave the way for revival and renewal. East Cooper Baptist Church welcomes to the Lord’s Table all who have trusted in Jesus Christ as Savior.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

THE HEIDELBERG CATECHISM Q. #60 LEADER: How are you right with God? CONGREGATION: Only by true faith in Jesus Christ. Even though my conscience accuses me of having grievously sinned against all God’s commandments and of never having kept any of them, and even though I am still inclined toward all evil, nevertheless, without my deserving it at all, out of sheer grace, God grants and credits to me the perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ, as if I had never sinned nor been a sinner, as if I had been as perfectly obedient as Christ was obedient for me. All I need to do is to accept this gift of God with a believing heart.

Living, He loved me Dying, He saved me Buried, He carried my sins far away Rising, He justified freely forever One day He’s coming Oh glorious day, oh glorious day One day they led Him up Calvary’s mountain One day they nailed Him to die on a tree Suffering anguish, despised and rejected Bearing our sins, my Redeemer is He Hands that healed nations, stretched out on a tree And took the nails for me One day the grave could conceal Him no longer One day the stone rolled away from the door Then He arose, over death He had conquered Now is ascended, my Lord evermore Death could not hold Him, the grave could not keep Him From rising again One day the trumpet will sound for His coming One day the skies with His glories will shine Wonderful day, my Beloved One bringing My Savior Jesus is mine

COMMUNION RESPONSE LIVING HOPE

How great the chasm that lay between us How high the mountain I could not climb In desperation, I turned to heaven And spoke Your name into the night Then through the darkness, Your loving-kindness Tore through the shadows of my soul The work is finished, the end is written Jesus Christ, my living hope Who could imagine so great a mercy? What heart could fathom such boundless grace? The God of ages stepped down from glory To wear my sin and bear my shame The cross has spoken, I am forgiven The King of kings calls me His own Beautiful Savior, I’m Yours forever Jesus Christ, my living hope Hallelujah, praise the One who set me free Hallelujah, death has lost its grip on me You have broken every chain There’s salvation in Your name Jesus Christ, my living hope Then came the morning that sealed the promise Your buried body began to breathe Out of the silence, the Roaring Lion Declared the grave has no claim on me Jesus, Yours is the victory!

COME BEHOLD THE WONDROUS MYSTERY

The Church in Corporate Worship Please use the following prayer to prepare your hearts for worship:

We gather this day to celebrate the hope of God found in the Rock solid foundation of Christ alone.

O GOD OF ABUNDANT AND UNENDING HOPE, Your people rejoice in Your unfailing love and the beauty of Your matchless character. It is the delight of our lives to think of You, to increasingly order our lives around You, and to make You the object of our highest affections. Unfold afresh the glorious mysteries of Your gospel to us this day -- and every day of our lives. So work in us that we may genuinely bow our hearts before You, Jesus, who upon the cross won for us the freedom that is ours today to live our lives out in Your name. May our hearts be so enamored with Your love, that we will set our gaze upon You like flint.... all the days of our lives.

OCTOBER 21, 2018

Let us offer grateful praise for the triumphant power of Christ displayed at the communion table.

REFLECTION

THOUGHTS FOR WORSHIP PREPARATION

Forgiveness is the fragrance the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it -- Mark Twain

From the cross uplifted high Where the Savior deigns to die What melodious sounds I hear Bursting on my ravished ear Love’s redeeming work is done Come and welcome, sinner, come

Sprinkled now with blood the throne Why beneath thy burdens groan On my pierced body laid Justice owns the ransom paid Bow the knee and kiss the Son Come and welcome, sinner, come

Spread for thee the festal board With richest dainties stored To thy Father’s bosom pressed Yet again a child confessed Never from His house to roam Come and welcome, sinner, come

Soon the days of life shall end Lo, I come, your Savior, Friend ALL MY HOPE ON GOD IS Safe your spirit to convey FOUNDED! To the realms of endless day Up to my eternal home Come and welcome, sinner, come -- Thomas Haweis Grace comes unbidden, often at the least expected of times. We can’t earn it. We can’t work for it. We can’t plead for it. It just comes. What we can do is choose whether to receive it or reject it. We can sing with our arms crossed and our teeth clenched or we can sing with our mouths and our hearts wide open. We can keep the drum muted or we can let loose with a riff to make the angels dance. -- Kim Buchanan

Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. Colossians 1:15-20

MORNING WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO PRAISE

COME BEHOLD THE WONDROUS MYSTERY Come behold the wondrous mystery In the dawning of the King He the theme of heaven’s praises Robed in frail humanity In our longing, in our darkness Now the light of life has come Look to Christ, who condescended Took on flesh to ransom us Come behold the wondrous mystery He the perfect Son of Man In His living, in His suffering Never trace nor stain of sin See the true and better Adam Come to save the hell-bound man Christ the great and sure fulfillment Of the law; in Him we stand Come behold the wondrous mystery Christ the Lord upon the tree In the stead of ruined sinners Hangs the Lamb in victory See the price of our redemption See the Father’s plan unfold Bringing many sons to glory Grace unmeasured, love untold

There are few songs that adequately describe the person and work of Jesus in such a succinct package as does this song by Matt Boswell and Matt Papa, “Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery”. In just a few short verses, “Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery” rehearses the entire gospel story, beginning with the incarnation, moving to Christ’s life and death, and concluding triumphantly with the resurrection. At his first coming, Jesus came to bear our judgment and stand in our place, so that at his second coming there would be no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and nothing that could separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Praise the Lord!

Come behold the wondrous mystery Slain by death the God of life But no grave could e’er restrain Him Praise the Lord; He is alive! What a foretaste of deliverance How unwavering our hope Christ in power resurrected As we will be when he comes

MORNING PRAYER OF PRAISE

SCRIPTURE PROCLAMATION PSALM 130

Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD! O Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy! If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared. I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning. O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

ALL MY HOPE ON GOD IS FOUNDED Joachim Neander wrote this hymn and sixty more. He was a member of the German Reformed Church, and was strongly influenced by Philipp Spener, the founder of Pietism. A rambunctious sort in his youth, he became involved in ministry in his 20s, but died at age 30 of tuberculosis. However, his hymns, particularly this one and the more famous “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation” have inspired Christian worship for more than three centuries (Neander died in 1680). This hymn calls us to trust God rather than “mortal pride” or “earthly glory.” It reminds us that “sword and crown betray our trust.” It calls us to praise the one whose “great goodness e’er endureth.” An interesting side note: Neander’s family name had originally been Neumann, which means “New Man” in German. However, Joachim’s grandfather changed his name to the Greek form, Neander, and that became the family name. Joachim Neander enjoyed the outdoors, and used to spend much time in the lovely Dussel River Valley. After his death, grateful people honored Neander by naming the valley after him. In German, “thal” means valley, so the name of the valley became Neanderthal. Nearly two centuries later in 1856, an ancient skeleton was discovered in that valley. It became known as the Neanderthal Man because of the name of the valley in which the skeleton was discovered. So the Neanderthal Man was named after the valley that was earlier named after the writer of this hymn.
