The text to this hymn is based on the anonymous fourth-century Latin hymn “Te Deum Laudamus,” which in modern English prose reads:

HOLY GOD, WE PRAISE THY NAME GROSSER GOTT

TRINITY 101 JUSTIN TAYLOR

Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology defines the Trinity as follows: “God eternally exists as three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and each person is fully God, and there is one God” (p. 226). Broken down, this amounts to three propositions:

We praise you, O God, we acclaim you as Lord; all creation worships you, the Father everlasting.

• God is three persons. • Each person is fully God. • There is one God. In addition, it’s helpful to elaborate on the fact that when we say “God is three persons,” we mean that he is not just one person, and that the persons of the Trinity are not to be confused. So we can also say:

To you all angels, all the powers of heaven, the cherubim and seraphim, sing in endless praise: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.

• The Father is God. • The Son is God. • The Holy Spirit is God. • The Father is not the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is not the Father. • The Holy Spirit is not the Son, and the Son is not the Holy Spirit. • The Son is not the Father, and the Father is not the Son.

The glorious company of apostles praise you.

If your head is starting to spin—then perhaps this little diagram can help give you a snapshot of what we’ve been saying:

The noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white-robed army of martyrs praise you. Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you:

Theologians have typically described God as being of “one essence” but “three persons.” But what exactly do we mean by “essence” and “person”? In its simplest terms, essence answers the question, “What are you?” Person answers the question, “Who are you?”

Father, of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all praise, the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.

So when we say that the Trinity entails “one essence” (God) and “three persons” (Father, Son, and Spirit), we are saying that the Trinity has one What and three Who’s. We can draw this as follows:

You, Christ, are the king of glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When you took our flesh to set us free you humbly chose the virgin’s womb. You overcame the sting of death, and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God’s right hand in glory. We believe that you will come to be our judge. Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood, and bring us with your saints to glory everlasting.

TRINITY SUNDAY

WORSHIPGUIDE

HOLY GOD, WE PRAISE THY NAME

THE TRINITY The doctrine of the Trinity is foundational to the Christian faith.

The Church in Corporate Worship Please use the following prayer to prepare your hearts for worship: Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you know the futility of our fumbling attempts to comprehend you. Time and again we are left exhausted by our finite minds’ endeavour to grasp your infinite Being. We are humbled and thankful you have revealed so much of yourself to us: ... a Father who creates and provides, who reaches out in electing love and embraces us.

This morning, we observe communion on Trinity Sunday as we celebrate with great joy the infinitely complex and unfathomable mystery of God’s Being as Holy Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

REFLECTION

THOUGHTS FOR WORSHIP PREPARATION Nothing counts more in the way we live than what we believe about God. A failure to get it right in our minds becomes a failure to get it right in our lives. A wrong idea of God translates into sloppiness and cowardice, fearful minds and sickly emotions. One of the wickedest things one person can do to others is to lie to them about God, to represent God as other or less than he is. [...in all His Trinitarian glory.] “ Eugene H. Peterson

... a Son who shares in our humanity, who died and rose that we may reign with him.

... a Spirit who opens our minds and hearts, who brings us into trinitarian truth. Lead us to own this mystery. Teach us to live the Trinity.

For praise exercises the heart toward gratitude, and gratitude nurtures contentment, and you may know for a certainty that no fruit ever appears on the tree of discontent.

Out of praises come courage, faith, strength, optimism, clarity and peace. Out of praises come health and happiness and the soul satisfaction men seek in the world and do not find.

This symbol may also be found in our sanctuary in the woodwork of the Apse wall in front of the choir loft; on the bottom of the wall light sconces; in the Narthex chandelier; and the pattern is repeated in the acoustic wood cloud panels above the Crossing platform and in other spaces.

Rejoice in the Triune God always, for as you rejoice and give thanks, you release heaven’s treasures and shower upon your head the blessings of a delighted Father. Nothing so thoroughly delights the Father’s heart as the praises of His children.

So praise, My dear children, and never cease in your praising, for in the midst of it I will manifest Myself, and you will understand that when I demand of you your praises it is for your highest good.

Amen.

The Triquetra or Bohemian Rings are a design used by early Christians as a symbol of the Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit).

Praise will transform the humblest dwelling to a hallowed haven. It will light the countenance and make the plainest face beautiful. It is impossible for the man who has learned unceasing praise to be a failure. God’s blessing attends his path, and God’s Spirit rules his heart. He is eternally at peace with both God and man. Francis J. Roberts Holy, holy, holy; Lord, God Almighty; Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, holy, holyl Merciful and mighty; God, in Three Persons, Blessed Trinity! Reginald Heber

It is crucial for properly understanding what God is like, how He relates to us, and how we should relate to Him. The doctrine of the Trinity means that there is one God who eternally exists as three distinct Persons--the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Stated differently, God is one in essence and three in person. These definitions express three crucial truths: (1) The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct Persons, (2) each Person is fully God, (3) there is only one God. The Trinity is vitally important because God is important. To understand more fully what God is like is a way of honoring God.

THE SCOTS’ CONFESSION The Scots’ Confession was written in 1560 at the direction of the Scottish parliament. Bitter struggle had erupted between the supporters of the Roman Catholic Church led by the Queen Regent Mary of Guise and those who embraced the Reformation and opposed Catholicism, which is derogatorily referred to as Papism. Mary had adamantly opposed all attempts at reformation of the church in Scotland. When Mary died in 1560, Protestant leaders petitioned the Scottish parliament to take action. John Knox, the leader of the Reformation in Scotland, and five other ministers drew up the Scots’ Confession in four days, which was promptly ratified by the Parliament. Its central doctrines are those of Trinitarian doctrine, election and the nature of the Church.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH SCOTS’ CONFESSION, CHAPTER 1

LEADER: What does Pentecost mean for Christians?

ALL: We confess and acknowledge one God alone, to whom alone we must cleave, whom alone we must serve, whom only we must worship, and in whom alone we put our trust. He is eternal, infinite, immeasurable, incomprehensible, omnipotent, invisible, one in substance and yet distinct in three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. By him we confess and believe all things in heaven and earth, visible and invisible, to have been created, to be retained in their being, and to be ruled and guided by his inscrutable providence for such end as his eternal wisdom, goodness and manifestation of his own glory.

HOLY TRINITY MARYTON

Father of heaven, whose love profound A ransom for our souls hath found, Before thy throne we sinners bend, To us thy pardoning love extend. Almighty Son, incarnate Word, Our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord, Before thy throne we sinners bend, To us thy saving grace extend.

Further, we should allow the fact that God is triune to deepen our worship. We exist to worship God. And God seeks people to worship Him in “spirit and truth” (John 4:24). Therefore we must always endeavor to deepen our worship of God-in truth as well as in our hearts.

Eternal Spirit, by whose breath The soul is raised from sin and death, Before thy throne we sinners bend, To us thy quickening power extend. Thrice Holy! Father, Spirit, Son; Mysterious Godhead, Three in One, Before thy throne we sinners bend, Grace, pardon, life to us extend.
