Fanny Crosby, author of our response hymn, Blessed Assurance, was America’s most prolific hymn writer, wrote 8,000 Gospel songs and hymns during a lifetime, which spanned nearly a century.

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER OF PRAISE OFFERTORY PRAYER

2017 marks the 500 year anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses to the door of a church building in Wittenberg, Germany. While not seeking to separate from the Roman Catholic church, he called for substantive and specific changes in her practices and theology.

OFFERTORY

Luther was joined by many other Reformers whose teachings were eventually summarized in what we call the Five Solas, “sola” being a Latin word meaning “alone” or “only.”

FOR THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH ANNIE LODGE • OBOE SOLO For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies; Christ, our God, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise.

She passed away in her 95th year. All of her days, except the first six weeks, were spent in blindness.

For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night, hill and vale, and tree and flower, sun and moon, and stars of light; Christ, our God, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise.

However, not even the loss of eyesight could render defeat to this astoundingly courageous soul. Aunt Fanny, as she later was affectionately called, also wrote 1,000+ nonreligious songs, and had four books of poetry and two best-selling autobiographies published. Frances Jane Crosby was born in Putnam County, New York, on March 24, 1820. A poorly trained doctor applied a mustard plaster poultice to her eyes when she was only six weeks old, rendering her totally blind. Even in her childhood, she realized she had a special gift. She often said, “I have a jewel — content.” When only 9 years of age, she wrote: “O what a happy soul am I, Although I cannot see, I am resolved that in this world Contented I will be. How many blessings I enjoy That other people don’t. To weep and sigh because I’m blind, I cannot, and I won’t.”

REFORMATION 500

For thy church, that evermore lifteth holy hands above, offering up on every shore her pure sacrifice of love; Christ, our God, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise. For thyself, best Gift Divine, to the world so freely given, for that great, great love of thine, peace on earth, and joy in heaven: Christ, our God, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise.

CONGREGATIONAL GREETINGS THE MORNING SERMON

CONRAD “BUSTER” BROWN, SENIOR PASTOR

RESPONSE

BLESSED ASSURANCE, JESUS IS MINE Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine; Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood. Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blest; Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

Sola Scriptura: Scripture alone Solus Christus: Christ alone Sola Fide: faith alone Sola Gratia: grace alone Soli Deo Gloria: glory to God alone These phrases carry such weight because they keep us from our sinful tendency to base our justification before God on something other than what God has done for us in Christ and revealed to us in his Word. The Five Solas Our final authority is Scripture alone, not amended or added to by tradition, opinion, or church councils. The basis of our forgiveness before God is Christ alone, not saints, Mary, angels, or any other being. In his substitutionary sacrifice on the cross Jesus completely bore God’s righteous wrath against us. His payment was full, final, and effective. Our justification before God is by faith alone. God declares us righteous in his eyes not because he sees righteousness in us but because we fully rest and trust in the work of Christ on the cross to pay for our sins and because we receive his perfect righteousness as a gift. We are justified by grace alone, through God’s kind, gracious, and free initiative. He gives us what we don’t deserve and could never earn: forgiveness, transformation into Christ’s image, and adoption into his family. All of this is accomplished for God’s glory alone. For eternity, praises will redound to the God whose wisdom, power, and love ordained that he would have a people from every tribe, language, and nation to share in his Triune joy forever.

PRAISING GOD THROUGH ADVERSITY The Life of Fanny Crosby

The Church in Corporate Worship

OCTOBER 1, 2017

Please use the following prayer to prepare your hearts for worship:

This year marks the 500th anniversary of the beginnings of the Protestant Reformation as Martin Luther nailed a list of grievances against the Catholic Church onto the door of a chapel in Wittenberg, Germany in October, 1517.

O GOD, BEYOND ALL PRAISING, we worship you today and sing the love amazing that songs cannot repay;

Our services in October will center around the themes the Reformation brought to the forefront of the church that mark who we are and how we worship.

for we can only wonder at every gift you send, at blessings without number and mercies without end: We lift our hearts before you and wait upon your Word, we honor and adore you, our great and mighty Lord.

REFLECTION

THOUGHTS FOR WORSHIP PREPARATION So praise, My children, and never cease in your praising, for in the midst of it I will manifest Myself, and you will understand that when I demand of you your praises it is for your highest good. Out of praises come courage, faith, strength, optimism, clarity and peace. Out of praises come health and happiness and the soul satisfaction men seek in the world and do not find. Praise will transform the humblest dwelling to a hallowed haven. It will light the countenance and make the plainest face beautiful. It is impossible for the man who has learned unceasing praise to be a failure. God’s blessings attends his path, and God’s Spirit rules his heart. [excerpt from On the Highroad of Surrender, Francis J. Roberts.] I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together! Psalm 34:1-3

O FOR A THOUSAND TONGUES TO SING

PRELUDE

Wesley wrote this hymn to commemorate the first anniversary of his conversion to Christ.

MORNING WELCOME

This origin is reflected in the lyrics, “On this glad day the glorious Sun of Righteousness arose.” Like with so many hymns, what we have in our hymnals is only part of the original hymn text.

AND ANNOUNCEMENTS VIDEO

CALL TO WORSHIP

JESUS, OUR BLESSED REDEEMER • ECBC ORCHESTRA

O FOR A THOUSAND TONGUES TO SING AZMON

In Christ your Head, you then shall know, Shall feel your sins forgiven; Anticipate your heaven below, And own that love is heaven.

Sudden expired the legal strife, ’Twas then I ceased to grieve; My second, real, living life I then began to live. Then with my heart I first believed, Believed with faith divine, Power with the Holy Ghost received To call the Savior mine. I felt my Lord’s atoning blood Close to my soul applied; Me, me He loved, the Son of God, For me, for me He died!

LAUDA ANIMA

This stately hymn of praise echoes the words of Psalm 103 and calls us to something greater than distracted and half-hearted worship. We’re called to praise God with all we have right down to our soul.

“Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven” responds to the question by example.

Here are a few of the other 19 verses that do not appear in our hymnal:

On this glad day the glorious Sun Of Righteousness arose; On my benighted soul He shone And filled it with repose.

PRAISE, MY SOUL, THE KING OF HEAVEN

Yet how can we really do that? How can we get rid of all the distractions and praise God with all our heart?

The stanza that begins “O for a thousand tongues to sing” is actually verse seven of Wesley’s original poem.

Glory to God, and praise and love Be ever, ever given, By saints below and saints above, The church in earth and heaven.

PRAISE, MY SOUL, THE KING OF HEAVEN

MORNING PRAYER OF PRAISE

The hymn’s beautiful words take our eyes off the world and direct them exclusively on God-the One who has “ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,” who is “slow to chide, and swift to bless,” and who “gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes.” Take a moment to reflect on the words of this hymn.

SCRIPTURE PROCLAMATION

Set your heart on God’s amazing grace and provision.

LEADER: We will praise you, O Lord. Though you were angry with us, your anger has been turned away, and you have comforted us. The Lord, the Lord is our strength and our song; he has become our salvation. We will trust and not be afraid. With joy we will draw water from the wells of salvation. Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted.

Think about all the ways he’s personally touched your life.

ISAIAH 12:1-6

CONGREGATION: Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things; let this be known in all the earth. Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

O GOD BEYOND ALL PRAISING ECBC CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA

As you do, you’ll find worldly worries replaced with something infinitely better, a soul-deep desire to offer our great God joyful praise.

O PRAISE THE NAME HILLSONG WORSHIP

I cast my mind to Calvary Where Jesus bled and died for me I see His wounds His hands His feet My Savior on that cursed tree His body bound and drenched in tears They laid Him down in Joseph’s tomb The entrance sealed by heavy stone Messiah still and all alone

O God beyond all praising, we worship you today and sing the love amazing that songs cannot repay; for we can only wonder at every gift you send, at blessings without number and mercies without end: we lift our hearts before you and wait upon your word, we honor and adore you, our great and mighty Lord.

O praise the name of the Lord our God O praise His name forever more For endless days we will sing Your praise Oh Lord, oh Lord our God

For we can only wonder at ev’ry gift you send, at blessings without number and mercies without end; for Christ, your gift from heaven, from death has set us free, and we through Him are given the final victory!

Then on the third at break of dawn The Son of heaven rose again O trampled death where is your sting The angels roar for Christ the King

Then hear, O gracious Savior, accept the love we bring, that we who know your favor may serve you as our King; and whether our tomorrows be filled with good or ill, we’ll triumph through our sorrows and rise to bless you still: to marvel at your beauty and glory in your ways, and make a joyful duty our sacrifice of praise.

He shall return in robes of white The blazing Son shall pierce the night And I will rise among the saints My gaze transfixed on Jesus’ face
