LESSONS ON WORSHIP (JOHN 4:19-24) WORSHIP Scott Hansen, Lead Pastor October 27, 2013

 God wants people to worship Him.  We tend to become like what we worship.  Time & place have very little to do with true worship.  Worship occurs spirit to Spirit.  True worship is honest, authentic & vulnerable. (cf. Psalm 27:8)

WORSHIP Scott Hansen, Lead Pastor October 27, 2013 Lesson Aim: To dig deeper in our understanding that worship is a surrendered lifestyle of celebrating, glorifying & obeying God so that we can climb higher in our ability to worship the Lord in all we think, say & do. Prayer: Ask the Holy Spirit to lead your study time and/or discussion. Icebreaker: What type of worship music do you tend to connect with best? Do you have a favorite worship song? 1. READ John 4:1-26. What does the text tell us about the background of the Samaritan woman? Why is this significant as we consider how Jesus reaches out to her? 2. How does Jesus’ offer of “living water” contrast with what the woman thinks He means (vs. 10-15)? What does this offer of “living water” mean in your life and experience? 3. How does Jesus respond when the woman suddenly changes the subject and begins talking about the controversy over the proper place of worship (vs. 19-24)? 4. What does the Father seek? What is worship (hint: check your teaching notes)? Why is it so important? 5. Review the main points under the section titled “Lessons on Worship.” What is at least one personal application you can make from this section of the teaching?

6. In the teaching this weekend, Pastor Scott shared this Core Belief & Value: We believe worship is a surrendered lifestyle of celebrating, glorifying & obeying God. Therefore we will worship the Lord in all we think, say & do. When is the hardest for you to live out this “surrendered lifestyle” before God? And why? o When I’m sick or hurting. o When bad things happen to me or someone I love. o When something really good is happening to me. o When I’m really busy. 7. READ Romans 12:1. How have you experienced God’s mercy in your life? 8. How does understanding worship as a gift that we present to God change your view of worship? 9. What might it practically look like for someone to be living worshipfully when they’re at home, work, in class, etc.? 10. Did you respond to one of the “Next Steps” on the Connection Card from Sunday? o Read Psalm 145. o Spend 5 minutes of quiet before the Lord, thinking about Him and/or listening to Him. o Forgive/love a person sacrificially, as Christ has done for me. (Colossians 3:13) o Sing a worship song (with or without the radio) & express gratitude for 5 minutes. If so, how did it go? If not, is there a Next Step you want to commit to now? Close in prayer as the Holy Spirit leads you. This LifeGroup Study Guide is designed to help you apply Sunday’s message.
