HEALTHY AGING

Healthy Aging: What is Advance Care Planning? For the many older Americans living today with one or more chronic conditions, advance care planning is an important part of chronic disease self-management. While some people living with a chronic disease enjoy a reasonably good quality of life, in many cases, chronic diseases are ultimately accompanied by slow, extended periods of decline and disability. For some, the time may come when they are unable to speak for themselves or make their own decisions regarding health care. It is during this time that you want to ensure your voice is heard, and your wishes and preferences regarding health care and heroic measures are known and honored. Having an advance directive for health care enables you to do that. An important part of advance care planning involves having conversations with family members and other loved ones about what you would want in the event of a life-threatening illness or injury, and then, most importantly, documenting your preferences in writing through an instrument such as an advance directive. An advance directive can include the name of the individual whom you have chosen to speak and make decisions on your behalf. This person, your “health care proxy” or “durable power of attorney for health care” should be someone you trust and someone who understands and will strive to honor and carry out your wishes. Once you’ve completed your advance directive, ensure that copies are provided to your health care proxy, your health care providers, your hospital, and others whom you think should have the information.

You may want to review your advance directive from time to time, but for the most part, once you have taken the important step to complete one, you can be comfortable knowing that your wishes and preferences are known, and thus much more likely to be followed. A variety of resources are available about advance care planning, advance directives, and related issues such as care giving, cognitive impairment, hospice, and palliative care on the Centers for Disease Control Web Site: www.cdc.gov Homestead Insurance Agency is a Medina County insurance agency that will spend the time necessary to provide you with the protection you deserve. Prepare for “The Talk” About Moving to Assisted Living Talking to loved ones about assisted living can be tough. Many seniors resist this transition, often because they feel they’re being forced out of their homes and losing their independence. Being prepared before a crisis arises, can remove some of the anxiety and uncertainty from the equation, making it easier for all involved. When it’s time to talk with your loved ones about moving into assisted living, the following tips can foster a healthy discussion.

“Our commitment to seniors is the benchmark for everything we do… our residents come first!” - Bev Long, Marketing Director Call Bev today to schedule a personalized tour. JOIN US OCTOBER 5th for Ocktoberfest 5pm-7pm Liberty Residence I Polka music, food, fun and beer!

Everyone welcome!

1. Know the senior housing options. Before bringing up the topic, learn about the different types of senior living settings—especially in the state where your elder lives or may wish to relocate eventually. 2. Learn about your parents’ financial situation and options for funding the move and their ongoing care. For example, ask if they have purchased long-term care insurance. If Dad is a veteran, inquire about his service to see if he could be eligible for veterans benefits to help pay for long-term care. 3. Have the conversation in a casual, comfortable spot, like at the kitchen table. Start by saying, “I know this is hard to talk about, but I want to be sure that I honor your wishes. “ 4. Promise to keep seniors involved in decisions. Everyone wants to be able to choose where they live and the kind of care they receive. When the time is right, Liberty Residence gives residents every opportunity to keep active, stay involved and age gracefully.

We offer meals, transportation, housekeeping and much more!

HEALTHY AGING

Vaginal Pain & Dryness…It’s OK To Talk About It Mona Lisa Touch Might Be An Option! By Mary South, MD As a Urogynecologist, I frequently see women who complain of vaginal dryness, irritation, burning and pain with intercourse. Along with that, some develop recurrent urinary tract infections, vaginal bacterial infections and recurrent yeast infections. As women age and go through menopause, the circulating estrogens in their bodies decrease and one of the side effects of this is vaginal atrophy. Vaginal atrophy is the usual suspect in causing the above symptoms that women find so bothersome. Until recently, the only effective treatment option that we have had for treatment, is locally applied vaginal estrogen cream, tablets or a vaginal estrogen ring. Many women are reluctant to use locally applied vaginal estrogens. Whether due to perceived risks of breast cancer or a personal history of breast cancer or strokes, women have often asked me for “other options” to treat their other than using hormones.

We now have another option to offer patients, namely the Mona Lisa Touch vaginal laser. Treatment involves three virtually painless five-minute in-office laser treatments spaced six weeks apart. This treatment has been shown to increase collegenization of the vagina resulting in increased elasticity and increased vaginal moisture. The results have been amazing! I have one patient who has not been able to have sex with her husband for five years until we treated her, and she had pain free sex after her first treatment! At Northeast Ohio Urogynecology, we are the ONLY practice in the Akron/ Medina area that offers the Mona Lisa Touch. Although insurance does not cover the cost of this procedure, mention this article and we will do THREE treatments for you FOR the price of TWO. To discuss this new treatment option or any other pelvic floor concerns you have are always welcome. Please call 234-205-2040 to set up your appointment.

Tired of Frown Lines & Crows Feet? BOTOX® Cosmetic targets one of the underlying causes of frown lines and crow’s feet—the repeated muscle contractions from frowning and squinting over the years. You will begin to notice a visible smoothing of your crow’s feet lines and frown lines between your brows. Wrinkles result from a combination of many factors. It’s not just about cellular changes that can occur over time, reduction of collagen, or damage caused by free radicals in the sun and the environment. When you frown or concentrate, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. And when you squint, the muscles around your eyes contract and cause crow’s feet. BOTOX® Cosmetic works beneath the skin’s surface and targets the underlying muscle activity that causes frown lines and crow’s feet. Bring a friend and meet one of the doctors at Skin Care Solutions. Fatigue Named Top

Health Concern for Women

Do You. . .Have a Class Reunion Coming Up? The class reunion has been postponed another year.. Everyone is still trying to lose another ten pounds.

You are not alone! Worn out and weary, women across the country named fatigue among their top five health concerns. (webmd.com) Dr. Sharma shares several possible causes of fatigue and suggestions to put the spring back into your step.

1. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck and produces

the hormones that regulate how your body burns fuel for energy. It can be overactive or underactive, but either way you'll feel sleepy. An underactive thyroid can make feel like you can't get your engine going. With an overactive thyroid your engine's on overdrive and you start to burn out. A simple test can determine if there is an issue.

2.

When your heart isn't pumping efficiently, it can't get enough blood out to your body, and that can make you tired. Fatigue is one of the most common complaints of women with heart disease. If you have heart risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure, and a family history of heart conditions, have your heart checked out. Measuring your blood pressure and other simple tests such as an electrocardiogram or an echocardiogram can pinpoint whether your heart is the source of your weariness.

3.

There's been an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency over the last few decades because we've been avoiding the sun. Too little of this essential vitamin can sap your bone strength, and some research links a deficiency of vitamin D to chronic fatigue syndrome. A blood test can determine whether you're getting enough of your daily D. If not, a supplement can get you to the amount you need each day. The Institute of Medicine, which published new guidelines in 2010, recommends that most adults get 600 international units a day. Dr. Priyanka Sharma specializes in really listening to her patients and she is trained to solve puzzling diagnostic problems. Dr. Sharma is trained and equipped to deal with whatever problem a patient brings, no matter how common or rare or how simple or complex. She is specially trained to solve puzzling diagnostic problems and can handle severe chronic illnesses and situations where several different illnesses may strike at the same time.

Headaches Are Not OK! Imagine a Life FREE From Headaches! By Dr. Brandon Bupp, Nationally Recognized Natural Wellness Expert All too frequently we talk with patients suffering from headaches that have no answers, no solutions and no place to turn and that is simply not ok. Let me see into a crystal ball and tell a story similar to yours or someone you know with headaches. The headaches began years ago, multiple tests, scans, blood work, etc. have been completed and there is “no cause” that explains where these headaches are coming from. You take “preventative” medication although it is really not preventing but more like it minimizes the intensity sometimes. The headaches are worse with stress or certain triggers and may be worse during specific times of the month at which you take another medication to minimize the effects. Hopefully, it doesn’t last too long, but pretty much the headaches stop the day in its tracks! Sometimes these headaches last for a few days or even longer. You basically are just hoping and praying that a headache does not happen because when it does, it’s miserable. Oh, and that’s not to mention the regular, throbbing headaches that still happen on a daily basis but you can manage those kinds of headaches! I want you to know that there is another outcome that is possible! The truth is there are many possible causes of migraines, but these causes do not always show up on an MRI or CT scan or other advanced imaging. It is very important to test things such as food sensitivities, vitamin or mineral deficiencies, inflammation markers in blood work, and possibly even toxicity testing may be necessary. But one of the most common causes of headaches and migraines is tension and stress on neurologic and soft tissue structures such as ligaments, tendons, and muscles in the neck caused by poor alignment and function in the spine, called cervicogenic headaches. Loss of optimal position in the spine and vertebral joints can occur due to slips, falls, sports injuries, and car accidents but most commonly loss of normal position and alignment is caused by bad posture because we spend so much time sitting, looking down, or working in a forward flexed position. This loss of position causes tension on the very sensitive, neurologic structures in the spine. That means damage or misalignment of the spine can create tension on these delicate, neurological structures. Irritation to these neurologic structures causes inflammation which creates dysfunction and pain. We analyze this scenario through examination, digital x-ray, and computerized nerve scans. It is then that we devise a treatment plan that aims to correct the cause of the problem based on what is found through testing. It’s really that simple. Of course, there can be other causes that require advanced testing, but honestly, most of our patients have already had that testing done. 6

I started coming to Advanced Health and Wellness in February of 2017. My friend invited me to hear Dr. Bupp speak at the Galaxy and I am so happy I did. I have had migraines since childhood and have tried so many things through the years to help them with no success. I was having 1-3 migraines a week when I started coming to the office. It was totally debilitating. I would be in bed most of the day every time I had a headache. It took hours for them to go away- even with the medications the doctors prescribed. Certain foods, smells, light, and stress triggered them. - Lisa Keener The important idea here is, find the true cause of the problem and then find a care plan that aims to correct the cause rather than simply managing the symptoms of the problem. If this is what you are looking for, please call our office for a free evaluation to determine if we can help.

We have blended the best medical, wellness and fitness services to offer a variety of solutions to enhance your health.

Healthy Aging with Massage I have a 78-year-old client who has been coming to see me for massages every other week for 14 years. She stays very active with taking care of her own home, keeping involved in various organizations. She told me a long time ago that her motto is “Move it or it will rust” and I agree! Movement is a highly effective therapy for preventing and treating a variety of ageassociated conditions. But what if your muscles are sore, or your joints ache? Maybe you have chronic pain, and some days it’s hard just to get out of bed. The population of U.S. citizens over age 65 is projected to increase from 12.9 percent to 19.6 percent by 2030 according to the National Center for Health Statistics. These same aging adults are receiving Massage Therapy as one way to help with the aches and pains of aging. • According to the Touch Research Institute, elderly massage is very useful for the treatment of Alzheimer's patients. It has shown to facilitate relaxation and communication. • It can significantly assist in arthritic pain management and promotes natural joint lubrication. • Massage helps to increase their range of motion, increase strength and muscle coordination. • Boosts natural energy levels and mental awareness. • Can also greatly improve posture by reducing muscle tension.

• Provide a profound calming effect which helps them to deal with medical interventions needed to handle various conditions. Massage can help temper the effects of dementia, high-blood pressure and many find a better quality of life and additional relief from a multitude of health issues. Debbie is the owner of Nature's Touch Wellness Center celebrating 17 years in Medina. She has assembled a caring, knowledgeable team to offer various treatments for her clients in a quiet, peaceful setting away from the hustle and bustle of life. Grief Support Offers Hope and Healing BY DIANE SYDER COWEN

Western Reserve Grief Services Free Community Resources Provide Support to Those Coping with the Death of Loved Ones

Although grieving is a normal and natural process, coping with the swirl of emotions and the new reality of living life with the absence of a loved one can be overwhelming. Many people find help and healing on their grief journey by attending a psychoeducational grief support group. Speaking with others who have experienced a similar death and hearing their stories in a safe, nonjudgmental environment provides the reassurance of knowing we are not alone. Conversations with others about their experiences can lead to fresh insights. Western Reserve Grief Services offers a variety of grief support groups for adults and children of all ages through the Robertson Bereavement Center located at the Hospice of Medina County Care Center, 5075 Windfall Rd. The groups are open to anyone in Medina and the surrounding communities who has experienced a death, whether or not their

loved one received hospice care. The groups are facilitated by licensed and/ or certified counselors. Registration is required for most of the groups, but there is no cost to attend. “The community grief support groups are made possible through funding from grants and through generous support from donors in the community,” said Diane Snyder Cowan, Director of Western Reserve Grief Services. “Our goal is to meet the needs of the grieving community. Loss-specific groups are available for partner/spousal loss of various ages, death of both parents, death of adult children and more. Be Healthier & Stronger with Yoga – A Practice for Life Do you think you’re too old, too large, too inflexible, or too weak for yoga? Or you’re not good at “doing yoga”? Are you intimidated by images of yogis twisted into seemingly impossible shapes? Those images are all too common and, frankly, do a disservice to many who can benefit from this healthful and beautiful practice. Yoga is for every body, regardless of size, age, flexibility, or physical limitations. It truly is a practice for life – to help you live a fuller, healthier life now AND into the future! That’s what HeartSong Yoga Studio is all about. HeartSong co-owner Vicki Karabinus found yoga over ten years ago, looking for relief after years of corporate travel had left her body tired and achy, and her mind frazzled with stress. At first, her yoga practice focused on finding physical release. In time, the mental and emotional benefits followed, offering stress relief and the ability to find calm amid the chaos of a busy life. The experience was similar for co-owner Serra Sandlin, who credits yoga for overall improvement to her physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Both women have a passion to share this gift with others, in a safe and nurturing environment. Their philosophy is that every body can be stronger, more flexible, and healthier with a regular yoga practice.

In my opinion, the best yoga anyone can practice is done without gazing in the mirror…, without worrying about wearing the latest yoga label, without worrying about bad hair days, or whether they’re a size 8 or 18. ~ Sarah Dawson, Karmi Yoga HeartSong Yoga Studio offers classes for every age, body type, and physical ability. Join us for classes that include Beginner Level, 50+ Yoga, Gentle Flow, Yin Yoga, Restorative, Power and Buti Yoga, and more! Healthy. Strong. HeartSong.

Does Your Skin Need a Nudge? Quite often I am asked the question “just what exactly does an esthetician do?” Here’s my answer. We give the skin the little nudge that it sometimes needs, to effectively do what it was designed to do naturally. As we age, the skin’s cellular activities become a bit sluggish which results in a more dull, flaky, discolored, or wrinkled appearance. Estheticians perform treatments that gently and effectively refresh and “jump-start” the skin resulting in a more healthy, vibrant appearance. For example:

Exfoliation (the shedding of dull, lifeless skin cells at the surface)

is encouraged by mechanical or chemical stimulation. After age 30, the natural shedding of these cells slows considerably which not only makes the skin appear dull but also prevents product ingredients from being effectively absorbed.

Oxygenation

(increasing the blood flow to the skin’s tissues) is encouraged through the infusion of specially-formulated serums and administering a facial massage. Skin that is rich in oxygen content appears more hydrated and supple. Collagen production begins to slow after age 25 and can also be encouraged through regular facial massage and the introduction of collagen-rich products.

Non-invasive. Natural. Necessary.

Routine facial treatments provide your skin with the help it needs to stand up to the challenges of sunshine, toxins, and time! Enlist the help of an esthetician today! When To Call Your Dermatologist By Darla Hadden PA-C 1. Do You Have a Mole or Sun Spots? Whether it's a mole you've had since birth or a new spot that just appeared, it's important to get a full skin exam at least once a year. It is especially important to have the moles or spots evaluated if you have noticed any changes in size, shape, or color; or have symptoms, such as itching, bleeding, pain, scabbing, or non-healing sores. If you have family members with abnormal moles or skin cancer, or if you have a history of sunburns, you should definitely see a specialist.

2. Suffering Form Acne That Isn't Going Away? Acne is the most commonly diagnosed skin condition in the United States. Although many people use over-the-counter treatments and home remedies for it, there are times when it is necessary to get a more tailored — and often more effective — treatment regimen. Certain skin conditions can resemble acne but aren't actually acne, which means you could be treating the skin issue incorrectly. If your acne isn't responding to what you are using at home, or if it is causing scarring and/or feelings of embarrassment, see your local dermatology practice.

3. Do you have thinning hair, scalp rash, or patches of complete hair loss? First, know that there are several different types of hair loss and many causes; including thyroid issues, illness, stress and hereditary. There are even types of hair loss that result in permanent scarring, such as LPP. Some are linked to internal diseases. To have a full evaluation, call for an appointment.

Darla encourages her patients to be proactive and to get a full skin cancer examination once a year. This exam is painless and only takes about 15 minutes.

4. Do you have dry, cracked or brittle nails? Most often fungus is not the only condition that affects the nails. Other causes can be; bacterial, fungal, psoriasis, lichen planis, growth of the nail bed. Some are more serious than others.

5. Experiencing red skin flare-ups? A number of skin conditions can cause the skin to be red and inflamed. Most of these conditions only affect the skin, such as eczema or seborrheic dermatitis, but some, like lupus and psoriasis, can be associated with internal symptoms. The mission of the doctors and staff at Dermatological Surgery Center of Northeast Ohio is to provide the highest quality care in an ethical and caring environment. Over a Decade Dedicated to Dogs By Kristi Charbonneau, Owner & Professional Pet Stylist

My love of pets began at a young age. After working a variety of different jobs throughout my adult life, I found myself continually gravitating back to something I loved – animals! I graduated from The Ohio Academy of Pet Styling, where I also worked as a groomer after graduation. Then while living in Florida, I learned more about animal behavior from a very knowledgeable groomer while working at a pet grooming shop. Later returning to Ohio, I continued to groom dogs in my house part time and worked for a construction company while raising my two children. Ultimately, I decided grooming pets was something I enjoyed, in 2006 I left my full-time job, and Bubbles-N-Biscuits Mobile Pet Grooming was born. My daughter Krystal joined me ten years ago, learned the trade, and we now have three vans with four groomers including myself on the road daily. We discovered our personalized, convenient and compassionate services that focus on safety and comfort of our client’s pets, has been the secret to our success. Currently, I am working on my certification as a Pet Aesthetician so that I can cater to pets with severe skin issues. Our service takes the stress out of trips to the grooming shop and has given numerous pet owners the comfort and convenience of having their pet groomed right outside of their front door! 14

Looking for the Right Attorney?

Women You Should Know

The Hazards of Co-Owning Real Estate By Attorney Monica Russell It is common for married couples to jointly hold title to their home. If the couple separates, then they either agree on who will keep the home or a judge decides through divorce proceedings. But what if the property owners are not married? For example, consider the case of Jane Smith. Jane and her boyfriend George Green decide to purchase a property together at a price of $150,000.00. The deed is in both of their names. Jane makes a $30,000.00 down payment on the property and she and George obtain a loan for the remainder of the purchase price. For five years they equally contribute to the mortgage payments. George also installs a new roof on the property. But then the relationship sours and they break up. Whose house is it? Can Jane force George to leave? Who is responsible for the loan? Under Ohio law, it is presumed that Jane and George are equal owners of the property and each has a right to the use and profits (i.e. rent) from the property.

Because they are not married, this is not an issue that can be heard in the domestic relations court. As a result, unless Jane and George agree on the disposition of the property, Jane will ultimately need to file a “partition” action in the common pleas court in order to sell the property or buy out George’s interest. Partition actions allow one cotenant (the plaintiff) to force the sale of a property. What can be done to prevent this situation? One option is to have one party in title and the other pay rent pursuant to a written lease. That way there is no confusion over who is the owner of the property. But if both individuals want to be in title, a potential solution would be to have the parties sign a written agreement regarding their ownership of the property. Questions on co-ownership? What to Look for When Choos

You’ve just found out that the nagging pain you’ve been suffering from calls for the expertise of an orthopaedic surgeon. If you’re like many people, you may not have needed to see a specialist for a medical issue before. And, with so many doctors in our area, it can be hard to know whom to select to best address musculoskeletal problems affecting your bones, joints and muscles.

Request Personal Recommendations

Getting a recommendation from your primary care physician, a family member or a friend is a great place to start. Like many other things in life, we turn to the people we trust for recommendations on auto mechanics, plumbers, financial advisers, lawyers and other service providers. The medical profession is no different. Talking to someone who has been through a similar experience is very beneficial. When discussing this with others, find out what their personal experience has been with the surgeon. How did the physician interact with them? Did he or she take the time to explain a procedure and answer their questions? Has the person completed their treatment and arrived at a good result?

Consider Experience

Experience is another factor to consider. The broader and deeper a

physician’s experience, the more accurately he or she can diagnose and treat patients. Along with that, it’s helpful to find out if the doctor has performed a high volume of surgeries like the one you need. It seems fairly obvious, but wouldn’t you prefer a surgeon who has performed 250 procedures in the past year to one who has only done 25?

Know What Your Insurance Covers

One other important consideration is whether the orthopaedic surgeon is covered by your insurance. Nobody will be happy to come into a doctor’s office and then find out it’s more expensive due to being out of network. All insurance companies have lists of physicians who are in their network plan. Most offices, including the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center, will also confirm that information. Patients should always check to be sure that they’re covered the way they expect to be covered.

Get A Second Opinion

There are a few situations that can lead to getting a second opinion. First, you may like your doctor, but he’s advising a specific course of action that you’re not sure about. Second, your primary care physician may suggest that you see a specialist for a second opinion and then return to your original doctor for treatment. Lastly, if you’ve had a bad experience with a physician,

Women You Should Know

osing an Orthopaedic Surgeon you might want to pursue a second opinion from someone else. While it’s wise to do your research when choosing an orthopaedic surgeon, deciding on whom to see boils down to someone you’re comfortable with. You’re entrusting your healthcare to someone. Ultimately, you must have faith in that physician to treat you. At the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center, we have physicians trained in all orthopaedic subspecialties. If you have a rare or unusual problem that requires highly technical or advanced treatment, one of our doctors will be able to treat you. Our expertise is unmatched in the Greater Akron area. The Crystal Clinic is the only Akron hospital recognized by The Joint Commission for excellence in knee, hip, and shoulder replacement, and spine fusion.

Women You Should Know

Women of Worth VALUE THEIR TIME

As women, we get more done in a day than anyone. Many of us operate as "one-woman show" in business and our personal life. We're entrepreneurs, executives, moms or maybe running a household with a spouse that travels full time. We’re running errands, picking up office supplies and cleaning the office while trying to juggle the phones, deadlines, sales and more. On top of that, we have kids to pick up at school, laundry, meals, shopping, and church or sports activities. Whether you have help or not, it all needs to get done on time. Knowing what your time is worth is the first step to knowing when and where you should outsource. In business ask yourself “am I doing $10 an hour work?” that’s keeping me from doing “$100 an hour work?” Decide, then prioritize, and then outsource or delegate. We’re undermining our own time, and the value of it by thinking we can and should do it all. Think your time is less valuable as "a stay at home mom?" Think again. In 1979 an attorney successfully argued a housewife was worth more than $40,000 a year as a full-time homemaker. Our time is worth a lot more than we often think. And some of the things we do are priceless, like nurturing a fevered brow, kissing a boo-boo on the knee, or closing that really big sale. To get you thinking confidently about your time, here are some tips:

Value Your Time

Start with how much you think each hour of your day is worth. Factor in everything you do, and all the pop-up responsibilities that pull you away from larger priorities. Is it worth $10 an hour? $25 an hour? $300? Then have the confidence to own your worth and find ways to spend your time on high-worth activities, outsourcing where you can.

Respect Your Time

Once you know your time is valuable, don’t let anyone undermine it. Respect your own time by disciplining yourself not to give your time away to people and projects that do not align with your values or goals, whether in business or life. Get good at saying no to things that waste your time and energy.

Teach Others To Respect Your Time

Set boundaries, and be clear about what you can and cannot do. Don’t waver and don’t ever over-explain why you must pass on something. We tend to ever-explain, and we just don’t need to. Over-explaining leads to negotiations, which leads to caving in. While I was working for a company doing everything from talking to clients to servicing accounts, to getting coffee for my boss, to fixing the copy machine (while having my own house professionally cleaned because I didn’t have the time then hiring and firing numerous cleaning services), I realized I needed to do this on my own. Following my dream, I founded PetalSweet Cleaning providing my personal dedication to perfection. Our philosophy is simple: If you pay someone to clean your home, it should be exceptionally clean. Ask the Expert...What you want to know and more! Ask the Wig Experts Finding the right wig and style could leave you feeling frustrated and confused. What color, length, or texture, do you want curly or straight hair? There is a lot to consider! Below are a few tips to help you find the perfect wig: What style best fits the shape of your face? Most women who need a wig because of medical induced hair loss just want it to look as normal and natural as possible. Try on wigs that are a little longer than the length you are used to, that way a wig stylist will have more room to design the wig to fit your face. What kind of wig/cap do I need? If you need full coverage due to hair loss or you want to try a different color or style altogether, then you want to choose a full wig. If you want a solution for thin hair, and want to add fullness or additional volume, length, or curl, then try a top piece. The top piece blends into your own hair to look very natural. Contact us to schedule an appointment for a personal, private consultation. Find us on Facebook! (Wigs N Things) and receive $30 OFF with this ad.

How Much Water is Enough?

by Molly Ludwig, PN Nutrition Certified

Dehydration is caused when the body loses fluids and electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium and Calcium) faster than they can be replaced. These are the minerals that make the muscles and nerves work properly. Studies suggest that at any given time, 75% of Americans are dehydrated. Poor or incomplete hydration and loss of these critical nutrients can lead to a host of issues such as muscle fatigue and cramping, decreased metabolism and alkalinity, reduced energy and brain function. THE PROBLEM: • 1/3 of Americans turn to sugary drinks and sports drinks. These can be loaded with sugar and lack many of the vital nutrients that are needed. • Kids are the primary market, contributing to the growing rate of 1/3 of kids that are now overweight in America. THE SOLUTION: IDLife “Hydrate” to the Rescue. The IDLife Hydrate formula delivers a carefully researched and designed complex of vital electrolytes, vitamins, antioxidants, MCT’s (Medium Chain Triglycerides), minerals and energy nutrients to address hydration and its essential components of electrolyte depletion, cellular uptake, kidney and cardiovascular health and proper nutritional support for the body’s muscle and nervous systems. • IDLife Hydrate offers a scientifically proven effective balance of these vital electrolytes without any sugar. • This product is safe for all ages. FIVE Year Anniversary! A few weeks ago, I met with some friends for lunch and one friend asked how the weight loss business was going. I replied that we were doing Great and that this month we are celebrating our five year Anniversary and that I just can't believe where the time went. Another friend then asked about how many people I have helped lose weight. After a moment of thought, I realized that I have helped over 1000 people to improve their lifestyle with better health and even got some off of their medications - not just lose weight. My friends were like "WOW" most businesses usually don't make it five years, let alone help so many people get their life back. Because you eat REAL food, not processed, it makes it easier to change eating habits and keep the weight off once the program has ended. My one friend said, you mean you don't have to buy the "mystery meals" that taste like Cardboard! She said it, I didn't! I replied, nope, just fresh fruits, vegetables, and clean meat with no additives that you purchase at the grocery store. You can learn more about our all natural, healthy weight loss program by contacting Paula directly at 330-721-1422 for a complimentary consultation. Please read our article on Page 5.

Ask the Expert...What you want to know and more! Clutter ruining your life? by Lisa Cwalinski- Owner Clutter wastes time…. When you can’t find things because you are unorganized it wastes time, sometimes making you late because you can’t find things you need; keys, sunglasses and other necessary items. Clutter costs money…For example: when you can’t find things you need, you buy more of the things you already have. If you don’t have an organized office area and can’t find bills, they acquire late charges, if your pantry is full but the food expires before you can finish it because it’s unorganized, it costs money. Clutter makes it hard to focus…If you find it hard to work at home because of the clutter, it saps your energy and overwhelms you. You don’t feel like doing anything because of the chaos of your environment. Clutter robs you of a relaxing home, making things seem hopeless….when you have excess clutter, your home is no longer the relaxing place it’s supposed to be. When it’s cluttered YOU don’t even want to be there, let alone inviting your friends in to entertain. you are embarrassed about your mess, and stressed in your own space. Clutter tends to make you feel it’s hopeless. People like me exist to help people who feel hopeless and overwhelmed by their clutter. How Can You Prevent Premature Aging Skin?

Jackie Cassidy, a Registered Nurse for over 20 years and an Independent Executive Consultant with Rodan + Fields.

• Consider using an AHA or retinoid product: Products with alpha hydroxy acids or retinoids can make your skin look younger. • Moisturize: Oil production in the skin diminishes in our 40s, so it is important to moisturize your skin regularly. • Protect your skin from the sun: Research has shown that ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun accelerate skin aging – making sun protection a critical part of every anti-aging skin care plan. There are so many products on the market, how do I know what to use? Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields have taken the guesswork out of your skincare routine with the Rodan + Fields Solution Tool. With answers to a few easy questions, we can create a skincare routine specifically designed for you! Rodan + Fields products are based on Stanford-trained dermatologists’, Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields. The Secret to Healthy Aging from WebMD

Who doesn’t wish for a fountain of youth? Magical youth-restoring springs exist only in legend, but science does point to a few simple, healthy habits that can help extend your life. Heather Whitson, MD, associate professor of medicine (geriatrics) at Duke University School of Medicine, shares the most effective tips.

DON’T SLOW DOWN

“Exercise and physical activity is where the strongest evidence lies, not just for reducing mortality, but also for across-the-board health benefits,” Whitson says. She ticks off exercise’s advantages: fewer heart risks, improved sleep and memory, less depression and pain, better bone strength, and fewer falls. What kind of fitness is best? “If you’re only able to do one kind of exercise, aerobic exercise is what you want to do,” she says. Do anything that sounds like fun. In other words, walk briskly, ride a stationary bike, or take a dance class. Even better, alternate aerobics with strength and flexibility training for a well-rounded program.

The Mediterranean diet has been linked to better heart health and greater longevity. Whitson recommends it to her patients. Ban butter. Switch to unsaturated olive oil for cooking, and use olive oil for salad dressings. Vegetable oils such as canola and grape seed are also healthy. Switch to fish. Twice a week, substitute a serving of salmon, herring, or albacore tuna for red meat. Load up on veggies . Leave more room on your plate for vegetables like broccoli, kale, carrots, and tomatoes. Grill or steam them, or serve them raw, instead of frying.

STAY CONNECTED

When family moves away and friends move on, you can lose touch and get isolated. Don’t let that happen. “The more connectedness people have, the better,” Whitson says. Build a support network through your doctor, community center, or religious organization.

GO MEDITERRANEAN With its emphasis on fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, the Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest ways in the world to eat. Plus, it’s delicious, so you’ll want to stick with it.

Have a Direct Impact in the Fight Against Breast Cancer The countdown is on the for the 2017 Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio Cleveland Race for the Cure! The 24th Annual Cleveland Race for the Cure is on Saturday, August 26th at Malls B&C in downtown Cleveland. As more than 5,000 participants from the surrounding areas Race for the Cure, they will help Komen Northeast Ohio turn Cleveland into a sea of pink. The Race is an opportunity for women, men and children of all ages to come together to celebrate survivors and honor those who have lost their battle with the disease. Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio has a significant impact on our community. During the last year, almost 35,000 services were provided to just over 16,000 individuals through grant dollars provided by Komen Northeast Ohio to organizations that serve uninsured or underinsured people that cannot access the care they need. The services that Komen grant dollars provide range from education to clinical breast exams, mammograms, diagnostic procedures, patient navigation, transportation, and survivor support. By investing the dollars raised in Northeast Ohio back in to our community, we can ensure that the highest quality of service is being provided to people most in need.

Whether you walk, run, volunteer or donate, your support helps save lives and provides priceless support to those in need. “The Race helps provide significant funds and bring critical breast cancer resources, like free mammograms and low-cost diagnostic procedures, to the low-income, underinsured, and uninsured in our local community,” said Sean Shacklett, Executive Director of Komen Northeast Ohio. “Every dollar makes a difference. Each participant is making a direct impact in the fight against breast cancer in Northeast Ohio.” Through events like the Komen Cleveland Race for the Cure, Komen Northeast has provided $15 million in grants to more than 50 local organizations that serve the most vulnerable populations in our community. In 2017, six organizations received close to $300,000 in grants for programs dedicated to serving those most in need in the local community. Additionally, more than $5 million has been contributed to the Susan G. Komen Research and Training Grants Program. You too can make a difference in the fight against breast cancer! MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Working Toward a Cure for Ovarian Cancer IN THE LAB. IN THE RACE. IN NORTHEAST OHIO

By Bridget Cook Growing up, Dr. Analisa DiFeo, PhD, noticed an innate curiosity inside herself. She constantly wanted to know and discover more about the world. Her favorite question was always, “Why?” For Dr. DiFeo, every day is a chance to put this boundless curiosity into action. As a Principal Investigator for DiFeo Laboratory and Professor of Dr. Analisa DiFeo Ovarian Cancer Research at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), she works towards a cure for ovarian cancer through research and advocacy. After earning her PhD in cancer biology from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai, there was one particular “why” question that drove Dr. DiFeo’s career path forward. Why, she wondered, was ovarian cancer receiving so little funding? “What really struck me was the lack of research at that time that was being done in the field,” DiFeo said. Two of her family members had been diagnosed, joining the more than 22,000 women who are diagnosed annually in the US. Dr. DiFeo was motivated by the need she saw in her own family for better treatment. “If you actually look at the ratio of mortality versus incidence, ovarian ranks third out of all cancers,” DiFeo said. “So obviously there is a need to do research in this cancer.” DiFeo Lab, in cooperation with the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, is part of a regional, multi-hospital effort to bring top-notch resources together for researching ovarian cancer. Today, Dr. DiFeo and her team are focused on investigating disease progression in mice. “We are trying to find genetic factors that predict whether the patient will respond to chemo, but also factors that will diagnose ovarian cancer earlier,” DiFeo said. In her nearly five years at CWRU, Dr. DiFeo has been a part of remarkable growth in the field. “When I came here in 2012, I was pretty much the only one working in ovarian cancer. Now we have about 11 cancer research labs in Northeast Ohio working in ovarian cancer,” DiFeo said. “There’s very few places that have a strong program such as this, so it’s been great to build a program in the area.” This strong sense of collaboration has led to new projects like a gynecological tumor bio-bank at DiFeo Lab. “We put patients’ tumors into mice. Essentially, we try to generate a mouse avatar for every patient that comes in. So now, we have about 320 samples collected, and about 44 mice avatars corresponding to those samples,” DiFeo said. “It goes to show that if you form a good team, which was very easy to do in Northeast Ohio, you can make things happen.” Patient support and outreach is what brings all of Dr. DiFeo’s work full circle. Her involvement with OutRun Ovarian Cancer (OROC) is one such example. Every August, OROC holds a 5K run and walk in downtown Cleveland, complete with celebrations and ceremonies at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Signs and Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer May Include: • Abdominal pressure, bloating or discomfort, feeling "full" • Constipation, diarrhea/changes in bowel function • Frequent urination/changes in bladder patterns • Nausea, indigestion and/or gas • Abnormal bleeding • Shortness of breath • Unusual fatigue/backaches • Unexpected weight gain, increased abdominal circumference • Unexpected weight loss Symptoms may be experienced by women at some point in their lives, and usually do not indicate ovarian cancer. However, if symptoms persist for three weeks or more with no diagnosable cause, contact your doctor and ask about ovarian cancer.

and Museum. In 2016, Dr. DiFeo was the race’s keynote speaker, where she offered words of hope to over 100 ovarian cancer survivors and their families. “I like to team up with organizations like OROC, because they are out there showing patients and survivors that they have a team behind them,” DiFeo said. “The mission of OROC is truly the same as the mission of our lab.” This year’s 14th Annual OROC 5K Run/Walk and Family Fun Run was held on August 5th. To date, OROC, which is volunteer-driven, has now donated more than $1,000,000 toward ovarian cancer research, awareness and education in Northeast Ohio. In the day-to-day demands of parenting three children, teaching, mentoring and so much more, it could be easy to lose focus or burn out. But the women fighting ovarian cancer constantly bring DiFeo right back to her mission. “What helps me push forward and keep going, is talking with patients,” DiFeo said. “We make it a point to involve patients in our research. Not only by collecting samples, but going into the community and telling them what we’re doing. I’ll go to survivor groups and speak about research, and I see how strong these women are that are fighting the battle."
