A Brazilian Butt Lift Can Enhance Your Butt!

By Cindy Marx; Practice Manager, Raj Plastic Surgery The Brazilian Butt Lift is becoming a popular body enhancement procedure desired by many. Safe options for creating a fuller, more rounded buttocks have developed over the past few years. In 2012, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, about 8,500 buttock augmentations were performed in the United States. Derriere’s in the spotlight, like Kim Kardashian, J. Lo. and Beyonce, drive women to desire a great derriere! Diet and exercise can, certainly, help tone one’s body. However, it does not often help to create a shapely butt. Buttock augmentation today is performed with fat grafting. A double bonus of body contouring is achieved with a Brazilian Butt Lift. Liposuction removes fat from areas where fat usually accumulates like the abdomen, flanks, hips, thighs and back. The fat is purified and then re-injected back into the buttocks giving a more natural feel and appearance than the silicone or saline implants that were used for buttock augmentations in the past and were fraught with many complications. The combination of fat removal from “problem” areas and fat transfer to the derriere creates a more shapely figure. This procedure of fat transfer is a delicate procedure that helps one achieve a fuller, sleeker, round or shapelier buttock and hips. Like any plastic surgery, it is important that this procedure is performed by a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. A good candidate for this procedure is one who has fat accumulations in other areas of the body allowing for the harvesting of fat for transfer. Very thin individuals may not have enough fat to transfer to the buttocks. More than one procedure may be necessary over a course of time to achieve patient’s desired result. Recovery for fat grafting to the buttocks is very important and must be followed exactly so that proper healing occurs. To avoid compromised results, commitment to proper recovery is important. If you are interested in body contouring and would like to find out more about a Brazilian Butt Lift, call Raj Plastic Surgery. Impact Your Life

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Starting a Fitness Routine at Any Age has Benefits Beyond Physical Fitness trends come and go, but weight training in particular never seems to come into style. Most people tend to reach the apex of their physical strength during their 20s and 30s and it gradually declines from there. Once our strength starts to go, so do other things. Muscular weakness is indelibly tied to not just our quality of life, but also to our life expectancy. Two recent studies published in The British Medical Journal revealed that muscular strength is a remarkably strong predictor of mortality, even after adjusting for cardiorespiratory fitness and other health factors. This conclusion was reached after an analysis of more than 30 studies that recorded physical attributes like bench press strength, grip strength, walking speed, chair rising speed, and standing balance. What the researchers found was that poor performance on any of the tests was associated with higher all-cause mortality, anywhere from a 1.67 to a threefold increase in the likelihood of earlier mortality. Now, here’s the good news: despite the inexorable effects of aging, physical strength is an attribute we can control. As the science is increasingly showing, resistance training can add years to your life, and the earlier you get to it, the better.

Hit the Weights Everyone

As these studies indicate, not all exercise is equal. Resistance training (like lifting weights) in conjunction with high-intensity workouts (like aerobics and running) is key. It’s never too late to start. And, yes, women, that means you, too! “Bulking up” is a myth. It’s arguably more important for women than men to lift weights because of a greater propensity for osteoporosis. Studies show that older individuals can still experience the benefits of gene shifting even if they’ve never lifted weights. It also results in an increased production of growth hormones and testosterone and lower levels of cholesterol. And it can stave off the effects of neurodegenerative disorders and depression. Weight training also offers innumerable positive effects on our physical, cognitive and emotional well-being. Taken as a whole, exercise has been shown to add between six to seven years to a life span, if not more.

Start Easy

Isometric exercises are of cused on tensing the muscles without movement. These exercises are not focused on increasing motion or flexibility, but rather on increasing muscle size and strength. The following exercises are geared toward preventing muscle loss with aging and promoting a modest increase in strength: Palm Versus Palm - Place your left palm on top of the right palm and attempt to bring the palm up to your chin while resisting with the other palm. Shoulder and Chest Muscles - Arms extended in front of you, palms facing, push palm to palm. Flex your muscles vigorously, but do not hold your breath or overdo it. Knee and Hip - Strengthen the knee by sitting on the floor or on a table with your leg stretched in front of you. Squeeze your thigh muscle to fully straighten the leg while flexing your ankle and lifting your toes up. Hold the contraction for 5 seconds and rest for 3. Repeat up to 10 to 15 times. This approach can be used for any muscle.

Jeff is also a personal trainer and professional body-builder committed to helping clients achieve their health and fitness goals. Visit www.maxstrengthfitness.com or call 440.835.9090.

Safety Tips

1. Be sure to warm up 10 minutes in advance and cool down for 10 minutes after the exercise is performed. 2. If your joints hurt, stop the exercise immediately. Soreness in the muscle groups can be expected. 3. Maintain good posture during exercise. 4. Do not hold your breath and be sure to breathe during exertion while exercising. 5. Do not grip weights tightly. 6. Movements should be performed in a slow, moderate, and deliberate manner.

Give Them What They Need – Not What You Want By Dr. Scott L. Rose

It's an indisputable fact - our bodies change as we get older and so does our need for dentistry. These changes take different forms in different people, depending on our inherited physical traits, our lifestyle and nutritional habits, and our medical conditions. Age brings changes in our oral health and changes in the delivery of dental care. Lack of oral health and the ability to chew can negatively affect nutrition and other systemic problems. I often find that a big issue is not taking care of simple things when they are small and easy to fix. I also find that people come in with tens of thousands of dollars of estimated treatment asking if they really need all this work. I think it is really important for the patient clearly state their needs and wants, and for the dentist to tailor treatment to those needs and wants, but in a fashion that addresses the overall health and well-being of the patient. Having a perfect mouth, but no money left over to pay for rent or utilities is not a healthy balance for the patient. I used to run the dental department at a skilled nursing facility along with being in private practice a few years out of dental school. Working with seniors and medically compromised patients helped me realize that dentistry is not just about filling cavities, making crowns and dentures. It is about helping people achieve overall health to live a normal balanced life. Many times it is very simple treatments that

achieve these goals. Sometimes doing less is actually what the person needs, not doing more. One of the keys to approaching dentistry in this holistic manner is to first listen to the patient, understand where they are, and let that dictate goals. Doing this will lead to a balanced, successful outcome for the patient, one that fits their lifestyle and needs. It’s all about the patient!

Back to School Time is Bike to School Time at Century Cycles!

— With the end of summer and the onset of homework, heading

back to school isn’t a joyful occasion for some children. Bicycling to school can help kids by providing experience with freedom and independence, and bring back some of that joy. Studies also show that students who bike or walk to school have better concentration and academic performance. Since 2008, the Century Cycles Bike To School Challenge has been helping over 5,000 children a year in Medina, Bay Village, and Rocky River improve their health and reduce traffic by biking to school. The program has won numerous awards, and was cited as one of the reasons Medina was recently named “one of America’s most livable small cities” by a national publication. Century Cycles can make sure that bicycling is safe for you and your school children with free bicycle safety inspections. Tune-ups and other repair services, along with a wide selection of accessories, including helmets, lights, and locks, are also available.

Malisse Sinito — Warm, Welcoming and Kind By Barbara J. Daniel Malisse Sinito and her husband Frank turned a small rundown bar in a historical building on Rockside Road and Canal into LockKeepers in 1992. It opened for lunch as a steakhouse. Malisse worked part time as the chef. Their lunch crowd loved their excellent food and their very personal service.

taurant, are good principals to follow,” says Malisse. She learned her love of food and cooking from her mother, aunt, grandmother, and grandfather. Old family recipes nurtured her passion. This Italian heritage is reflected in the menu that features handmade pastas, fresh baked pizza and desserts, steaks, chops, and seafood. “Desire to be really good at something. Let passion for your business drive you and not the profit. Money comes later. This can apply to any kind of business,” advises Malisse.

When Malisse started raising children, she was no longer involved with the restaurant. Today, LockKeepers occupies an arts and crafts building located between the Erie Canal and the Cuyahoga River. Malisse oversees all operations of the restaurant including the menus which change four times a year. Executive Chef Alberto Leandri from Venice and Malisse discuss the trends in food and what their customers like. Their goal is to respond to clients and continue the personal service they were known for in 1992.

Malisse has supported her husband throughout his career in the restaurant business and then his company that develops and manages affordable housing for low-income families and seniors. Now she oversees a successful restaurant. And she did all this while raising children. Malisse is definitely a “woman you should know.”

Malisse and Frank love Italian food and hospitality. They entertain well at home and carried this talent over to the restaurant business. “Be welcoming and kind to your guests, whether at home or in the res-

Preparing for Your Divorce

Ending your marriage, whether through a divorce or dissolution, can be an overwhelming experience. One of our goals at Alice Rickel, LLC is to keep clients focused on what is important such as the children, maintaining financial stability going forward, and planning a future based on a new financial reality. Remember to take each day at a time. You may consider implementing some of the following suggestions: The Children: 1. Determine the best parenting and physical living arrangement that makes the most sense for your family. Look at the situation realistically to determine what parenting possession schedule is best for you and your children. You may consider contacting a mediator or a parenting coordinator to assist in designing a parenting plan. Keep in mind that these changes are affecting your children. For example, they will need to adjust to living in two separate houses or they may need to go to a new school. Try to implement a parenting plan that minimizes disruptions in your children’s daily lives. 2. Keep a journal. If you are involved in a custody dispute, consider keeping a written journal of what goes on between you, your children, and your former spouse. You may want to record how much time each parent spends with the children; what activities or tasks each parent does with the children; and who is responsible for routine doctor visits, teacher conferences, etc. Keep a log of your children’s responses to their changing environment so you can determine whether your parenting plan needs to be modified.

Oral Health: THE MOUTH BODY CONNECTION By Claudia Minadeo-Fox, D.D.S.

Years ago a physician who suspected heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy or any medical condition would probably not refer their patient to a dentist. Times have changed and over the past five years, evidence has concluded that the health of your mouth can affect your whole body. Physicians are taking a more holistic approach and so are we. In one recent study, people with serious gum disease were 40% more likely to also have a chronic condition. It has also been reported that three out of four Americans have signs of periodontal disease.

We are passionate about raising awareness of the compelling evidence about the role of oral inflammation in disease. Our office is uniquely qualified to evaluate and treat these conditions and help our patients lower the inflammatory burden in their bodies to improve their quality of life. Helping patients develop and maintain wellnessfocused habits and lifestyles are critical to long-term success. Saving lives through oral health matters!

It’s All About Inflammation Bacteria and inflammatory chemicals in gum disease can enter your saliva and circulatory system and travel to all parts of the body. As they travel, they can cause other infections and contribute to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, arthritis, and even orthopedic implant failure. The inflammation continues unless the infection is brought under control. When we examine our patient’s gums, even those with good oral hygiene, and see bleeding more than normal, we view it as a red flag! This means the person could be at risk of developing systemic illness. Along with the proper treatment, good oral hygiene, a carefully taken medical and family history, nutritional support, and stress reduction, are all important to decrease inflammation and protect from illness. 14

Does the Refrigerator Call Your Name Too? By Paula Weisenberger, Owner Last Diet Ever was TRULY my last diet ever. Over the course of my life I have done many, many diets only to have gained the weight back. I had sworn off any type of diet and was going to live with the consequences. But guess what, you don't have to! What sold me on this program was the ability to "keep the weight off". I also no longer have that little voice in my head that says, "eat me, Paula," as I walk past the refrigerator. I even learned a few things about myself that has helped me to maintain my current weight. You will too. I was eating the wrong healthy foods for my body chemistry, once I discovered the trigger foods, I can now make healthier choices. You will too. And guess what, I don't have to worry about waking up the next day a few pounds heavier. I continue to have more energy, feel better, clothes fit better /more comfortable, and I am six years older than when I did the protocol. You will too. We have hundreds of past patients who have also experienced these same things and will occasionally call and express their thankfulness for our protocol and the support they received throughout the program. Some have completed their protocols, 3 - 6 - 9 months up to a year or two or more ago. They are reading labels and paying more attention to what is in foods. They find out what their trigger foods are and avoid them. The Last Diet Ever protocol just gives you

Professional Working Mom Created the Perfect-fit Cleaning Service Company! PetalSweet Cleaning is a locally and independently owned and operated business headquartered in Medina, Ohio. Prior to launching PetalSweet, owner Jesica Wilfong would hire and fire numerous cleaning services through the years. Our philosophy is simple: If you pay someone to clean your home, it should be exceptionally clean. “I told myself I was being to unreasonable but in the end, I was paying to have my house cleaned and it was rarely if ever to my satisfaction.” said owner Jesica Wilfong. If this type of cleaning company didn’t exist, she was compelled to fill that need.

my boss, to fixing the copy machine (while having my own house professionally cleaned because I didn’t have the time), and I realized I needed to do this on my own. Following my dream, I founded PetalSweet Cleaning providing residential and commercial clients with flowers, chocolates and my personal dedication to perfection.” Jesica is also dedicated to helping others thrive as entrepreneurs. Although her career has been full of many outstanding triumphs, the part that fills her with the most pride is the achievements of her employees, clients and friends.

In rapid succession, Wilfong has grown the company with 10 employees and over 200 active, recurring cleanings a month. Our employees value the philosophy of the company and are committed to the level of excellence set forth by the company’s owner. Other companies may cost less than we do, but for good reason.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR YOU?

JESICA WILFONG, Owner/Operator was named the 2014 Athena Young Professional Award recipient, Jesica Wilfong, is an entrepreneur redefining leadership. “I had no idea I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but I made the decision and changed my life forever in 2012. THE DIFFERENCE

You might ask what makes us different from any other cleaning company. There are a lot of cleaning companies and individual people to choose from, but we are very confident in saying we are best at what we do and are completely different than others.

We Provide a Better Overall Cleaning Experience

We take quality seriously. It is our number one priority. Our team members go through extensive training and testing to ensure that they are cleaning using our specific methods that deliver unparalleled clean. We leave things looking brand new!

We Deliver Unparalleled Individualized Service

We do custom cleaning. Our team members do not use a checklist. Each client and home is different, so we tailor our services to fit your needs, and we do it better than anyone else.

We Ensure Quality, Reliability, and Integrity

We are privately owned, started by Jesica Wilfong, a busy working mother, who after using most of the cleaning services in the area for her own home was not satisfied with the quality and service of cleaning she was paying for. Because we are privately owned, you will speak with the owner when you call. She did not purchase a franchise (like many cleaning companies); she started PetalSweet to meet a need she is passionate about and she loves making sure our clients are completely satisfied.

Cleveland

- The Home of Beautiful!

There is a lot of excitement happening in Cleveland this summer. The biggest event was the Cleveland Cavaliers bringing home the win. LeBron James and the CAVS are the 2016 NBA Champions. Witnessing this event was truly an amazing experience. What I really enjoyed most was seeing the excitement first hand in a sea of beautiful people in Downtown Cleveland. Witnessing the pure energy of joy on people’s faces made me think “WOW” we really do look beautiful when we are happy! Yes, we have some beautiful people in Northeast Ohio! This brings me to my theme. As many of you may know, I have been in the beauty industry for well over 20 years. As a business owner, Licensed Esthetician, and Certified Reiki Master, the fun part of my job is helping people look and feel their best. Being able to see the true essence of a person’s inner beauty is my gift. I know that the summer months can be harsh on the skin. Extreme temperatures/sunburn, sweating with makeup on and chemicals from swimming pools are some of the things that can create problems for your skin. I have found that very often women are using the wrong products on their skin, which can result in breakout, dry flaky patches or other skin problems. Also as we

mature, our skin changes—it loses elasticity resulting in saggy skin. The lack of collagen can show up as fine lines and wrinkles. Proper cleansing is the first line of defense in maintaining a beautiful healthy, radiant skin. I love helping women find that proper balance. Most ladies with busy schedules don’t want to deal with a time consuming skin regiment. Nor are they ready for more extreme measures like plastic surgery. If you are not feeling like your most beautiful self, then join us at Studio LL50. It is a relaxed, private salon located in Beachwood. My team and I look forward to welcoming you to where true beauty is an inside job!

Bleeding gums and bad breath (halitosis) are usually signs of gum (periodontal) infection. There are several types of gum diseases depending on the severity. Bleeding and painful gums means that the bacteria that causes this infection has started the process of destruction of the bone and tissues that hold your teeth in place. Gum infection is a chronic disease that is affected by multiple factors. It’s estimated that 8 out of 10 individuals suffer with one stage of periodontal disease. It is affected by oral hygiene, medical condition, risk factors like smoking and drinking, stress, and hormonal changes in female patients. It’s a very serious condition because it cannot be cured. As it progresses, it causes teeth to shift and become loose. Patients suffering from advanced periodontal disease lose their dentition, even when teeth are healthy and do not have cavities. Periodontal disease is preventable. Through conscientious oral hygiene, including daily flossing and brushing, everyone should be able to keep their teeth indefinitely. Do you Know How Your Wellbeing is Being Impacted by Those Around You?

By: Debbie Jones The Ideal Method 216.536.9426 www.TheIdealMethod.com

Have you ever heard of sympathy pains or notice how your mood can be impacted by someone else's? This is a real phenomenon that occurs when the energy of one person is impacting the energy of another person (or animal) since living beings are constantly emitting and receiving energy messages. When energy is flowing freely, we tend to feel balanced and experience health, also referred to as a state of wellness. When the energy within us is disrupted, we can feel stress or illness. The Ideal Method of healing was founded with understanding that there is a deep connection between our emotional and physical well-being, and the emotional and physical well-being of everyone around us, including our animals. The Ideal Method is a gentle, yet powerful and effective approach to addressing physical, mental, or spiritual imbalances that you may be experiencing. Your personal healing consultation will be facilitated by Debbie utilizing the ancient art of Reiki Energy Healing. Each session is unique and will be specific to your needs and situation.

Enhance your Selfie! By Dr. Ritu Malhotra, Enhanced Image Center Why Look Younger? ...Because You Can! Do you look in the mirror and see a tired face and a sagging jawline? What if... you could get firming of the jawline that looks completely natural? What if… it was actually affordable? What if… it only took a couple of hours? You don’t have to look your age. You should look as fresh and youthful as you feel, as young as you want others to see you. Understanding facial aging can help you head off time’s effects. An awareness of rejuvenation treatments will help you to appreciate what will work best for the specific desired changes you want to make to your appearance. The Elements of Facial Aging Changes that transform your face into a tired and aged appearance: • Skin changes • Volume loss • Muscle/ligament changes • Gravity • Fat accumulation However, you can diminish or reverse these effects. SKIN CHANGES As we age, our skin loses elasticity and begins to retain lines where expressions cause it to fold, and wrinkles form. The skin gains a translucent, crepe-like appearance. You can reduce the impact of sun damage and a loss of nutrition by utilizing a recommended Skin Care regimen—with a cleanser, toner, prescription strength skin lightener and exfoliator. Dr. Malhotra is board-certified to practice facial plastic surgery with 15 years experience in cosmetic surgery and anti-aging skin care. She is the founder and medical director of The Enhanced Image Center, The Cleveland Area’s premier medical facility for Cosmetic Enhancement since 1998. She is frequently approached by the news media as an expert in her field. Dr. Malhotra is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery to practice facial plastic surgery after having

completed her residency at Thomas Jefferson University Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA.

In addition, as you age, the skin’s normal process of rejuvenation slows so that more and more skin cells on the surface are older, and more damaged. You can counteract these changes using laser skin peels for resurfacing ($275 and up) or laser collagen rejuvenation ($275) to stimulate the skin’s natural rejuvenation process. Fractional laser treatments are amazing for improvement of tone texture and tightening of the skin ($1000 and up.(Call us for an article on lasers, Lasers A to Z.) Loss of Facial Volume With age, the body changes its patterns of fat deposition. The face loses priority, so it begins to lose fat. This is worsened by the displacement of tissues by gravity (see below), creating a haggard, worn, or tired appearance. This can be countered using dermal fillers such as Belotero Balance ($600), Juvederm® ($650) or Radiesse® ($750 and up) or fat grafting or the new filler Voluma ($800). (Call us for an article on fillers, Fillers A to Z.) BEFORE

Changes in Facial Tissues It’s not just skin and fat, even some of the facial ligaments can lose elasticity. This contributes to the displacement of facial tissues. Where the ligaments retain their tautness, it can create facial grooves. These grooves can be concealed using dermal fillers such as Restylane® ($550), Juvederm® ($600), or Radiesse® ($750 and up) or fat grafting. Over time the muscles become conditioned to repeated responses and will anticipate routine contractions. In the face, this leads to the

Massage Should Not Be a Painful Experience

A study of the effects of massage on blood pressure found that painful massage was not beneficial. It increased blood pressure and contributed to elevated stress markers. In some massage circles, it is popular to say that pain is necessary to “release” the muscle, especially in deep-tissue massage. It is not muscle that needs to be released, but the fascia that surrounds the muscle. Your body makes a knot to compensate for a postural problem. I once had a massage and the therapist found a knot in my right thigh and proceeded to strip it. It was very painful. Not only was I not relaxed, but my right hip hurt for days. If you get a massage for a sore neck or shoulder, the problem might be in your back or your foot. Posture is affected by past traumas. A trauma could be a car accident, a fall or a repetitive job function like keyboarding. The effects of every trauma are cumulative. Maybe you fell off your bike as a child. Your body compensated to protect your brain and spinal cord. Later in your 20’s you were hit from behind in a car and a year later developed headaches. You don’t connect the relationship of these events, which led to a misalignment of your posture and causes pain. You want to look for a massage therapist who is experienced in releasing trauma. They should ask questions about sports injuries,

accidents, falls or fractures as these all affect posture. There is a “hurts, but feels good” sensation as the trauma is released. You should not wince when getting a massage. Pain sends the body into a stress response and can be detrimental. Massage does not have to be painful to be effective. Services We Offer: • Therapeutic Massage for headaches; TMJ pain relief; release of soft tissue; improved joint mobility after a fracture; shoulder, back or neck pain; sciatica; and plantar fasciitis. • Hypnosis for weight loss and smoking cessation. • Energy Medicine: Reiki; integrative energy, tuning fork, and polarity therapies; and Reflexology.

Sugar addiction, nicotine addiction, laser therapy?

What’s the Connection?

By Luciana McCartney The method, relies on an FDA approved cold low-level laser, that is applied to certain pressure points of the body. Although it is not very well known, the benefits of laser therapy are well documented throughout the world. Each year, thousands of people make up their minds to lose weight or to quit smoking. It is a goal that is always on their minds. Unfortunately, within a few days, weeks or months, most of their goals have gone up in smoke. Don’t give up hope because help has arrived! By replacing traditional acupuncture needles with advanced laser technology, cold low-level laser has been successfully helping thousands of people recover from their addiction to nicotine, or to sugar. This is done by providing a safe, painless, and highly effective solution to the problem which strengthens their resolve. Operating on principals similar to acupuncture, which is an ancient art of healing, cold lowlevel laser therapy stimulates pressure points that can reduce tension, increase circulation, and enable the body to relax more deeply allowing the person the control needed to succeed. The average American today is considered to be overweight, but there are no miracle cures to solve this problem. Achieving your ultimate healthy goal takes time and commitment. Many people suffer from sugar addiction, which can be just as hard to break as certain drugs. Laser therapy will not only enhance and stimulate the metabolism, which enables the body to burn calories at an accelerated rate while increasing your sense of energy, but it will allow you to experience minimal withdrawal and cravings as you detox from carbohydrates. Key points are targeted to encourage feelings of relaxation, and to decrease the sense of stress and anxiety. This is most important for those who consider themselves stress eaters. The use of low-level laser therapy makes it easier for one to stay motivated. With the advantage of laser therapy, combined with proper nutrition and regular daily exercise, you will be well on your way to a healthier lifestyle. For the smoker, points are targeted that control addiction to nicotine, which eliminates the physical connection the brain and body have to this powerful drug. Stress and relaxation points are stimulated to help avoid withdrawal symptoms. The laser helps to rebalance the body without harmful side effects. The entire procedure is external, noninvasive, and non-thermal. Laser therapy has been successful in the fight against tobacco for the last 20 years. Clients report laser treatments are nothing less than amazing. Since 2005, AcuLaser has had a significant success rate in helping clients quit smoking and lose weight. AcuLaser combines the ancient practice of acupuncture with the new technology of FDA approved low level laser. LLL provides one of the most advanced forms of

therapy used today to help clients rid themselves of nicotine and sugar addictions. Our clients are amazed by how the relaxing, calming, and pain free treatment provides the final answer to end their vice. We deal with every aspect of change in the most supportive way enabling clients to move on with confidence and to ensure continued success. Growing my practice has brought me a great deal of satisfaction. I see such positive change happening in my clients’ lives. Beating the odds to fight addictions once and for all is such an accomplishment, and I am proud to be a part of that. AcuLaser Treatment Center is Located in Broadview Heights. HEALING from the

Being a working mother of three children, I found it difficult to balance work, kids, and homemaking. I got caught into the trap of looking for fast and easy meals. I thought that I was choosing healthy meals for my children. After all, the labels said, “healthy, natural, low-fat, no fat and diet.” How could they not be? Then my daughter became sick. She developed gastrointestinal issues that lead her to several hospital stays - going home with more medication. When she got to college we decided to figure it out on our own. We researched the Standard American Diet, the SAD diet, and discovered our food was chemical junk. Labels had deceived us and what the food industry was doing to our food was mind boggling. Pesticides, hormones, medications, genetically modified crops are killing us. I learned that the bleaching process of flour that is being used in America, is illegal in every other country. I decided to go back to making all of our food. I made her bread, yogurt, granola, snacks, and desserts. Her symptoms disappeared! My other daughter had asthma. On inhalers, steroids and was exacerbated by exercise. I had read that since the bleaching processed was used in the U.S. that childhood asthma and allergies have gone up 300-400%! So I decided to have her change her diet as well. NOW, she runs every day without any inhalers. Since my mom and I were making all these fresh whole foods, we started eating clean too. I was having lunch with my mom and she said, “Dawne for everything you have been through this is so easy.” A light bulb went off in my head - I had struggled with an eating disorder for years. I was in two treatment centers and did every diet imaginable trying to find something that worked! This was the first time my cravings, obsessions, fluctuating weight, brain fog, fatigue and vast amount of other symptoms had dissipated. I decided I needed to go back to school and learn more so I could help others. Our bodies are on toxic overload from environmental, food, stress and chemicals. • 170 billion pounds of chemicals come into this country each day. • 1.2 billion pounds of pesticides being used each day. • 80% of antibiotics are used for corporate farming. • The average woman uses 168 chemicals on her body each day. Our livers cannot keep up with the toxins going into our system. Toxic overload affects our energy, metabolism and cellular health. Until we eliminate the toxic load from our bodies and restore our gut health, we won’t lose weight. It is not only what is on our plates. I work with clients to find balance in their relationships, careers, finances, sleep, physical activity and stress. The goal is to find a whole life balance. We tend 20

Inside

to function through each day instead of living each day. We are a society stuck in the “busy” mode looking for convenience and fast results. We utilize fast food restaurants, meals in a box, bag or tin that we can throw together for a quick meal. Most of us are overworked, overstressed and sleep deprived, which also deteriorates our health. I see individuals and corporations doing the same thing over and over again. Our society spends billions of dollars on health-related products and diets, with a 1% success rate. We need to get to the root cause of symptoms instead of putting a band-aid on a major health crisis in America. We need to educate employees on the toxic effects of our food and stress to find the source of their symptoms. We continue to take medications, pills and shakes looking for a quick fix for our busy lives. I work with my clients to find the right lifestyle change I call it your, “blueprint to health." One persons plan can be another persons poison. It is developing a sustainable lifestyle change that works for you. I don’t count a carb, calorie or step. I found that when I eat real whole foods, my body knows what to do with it. I am very passionate about what I do. I hope I can help you achieve goals that motivate you to reach lifestyle and health goals that you never thought were possible. I have found when I make my health and well being a priority, I am a better mom, wife, and overall person. How big of a priority is your health? What will you choose, a food or lifestyle plan that will empower you or poison you? I specialize in corporate health, groups, speaking engagements & individual coaching. Creating n Smiles and Hope for Hospitalized Childre

Witnessing a hospitalized child smile for the first time in days or learning that your visits are the one thing a child looks forward too are hard to ignore. The immediate impact of her visits with children in the hospital compelled Jen Koch to create Smiles with Style. Smiles with Style (www.smileswithstyle.org) is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to creating smiles and improving the self-esteem of hospitalized children. Through one-on-one interactions, their volunteers provide mini-makeovers and dress-up experiences for children. Children battling life-threatening illnesses may experience a change in their appearance. Perhaps they’ve lost their hair or a limb. Smiles with Style volunteers help children embrace the changes and feel good about themselves. Studies have shown that when people are playful and have a positive attitude, their immune systems are functioning at their best. Therefore, their mission is to put a smile on the face of every child suffering from illness and by doing so create hope and lift the spirits of sick children. Smiles with Style services are free of charge and all of the makeover products are donated to the children. The makeovers are small in terms of physical transformation, but the huge smiles created are tremendous. Some of the items they may use are tiaras, lip-gloss, costume jewelry and accessories. They also have sticker tattoos, hats, super hero capes, and pirate outfits for little boys. Since creating the organization in 2012, Ms. Koch has expanded

operations to Cleveland, Akron, Columbus, Dayton, Toledo and Chicago. Ms. Koch plans to continue to partner with other major pediatric hospitals so they we can bring smiles to all children suffering from illness. If you would like to volunteer or donate please visit our website – www.smileswithstyle.org. Just $10 will fund a smile!

ATTORNEYS WANTED!!

...THIS COULD BE YOU... Advertise with Us! Attorneys will often provide a free or very low-cost consultation to discuss the details of your situation and to provide answers to some basic questions about your concerns and their firm.

If you are one of these attorneys, then join us to inform readers about your law practice in our next issue. We will be featuring attorneys in our special section, “Looking for the Right Attorney”? Lawyers will often provide a free or very low-cost consultation to discuss the details of your situation and give you an opportunity to ask some basic questions about the attorney. This meeting should not only help you decide whether to go forward with a lawyer in general, but also whether you should proceed with this lawyer. If you later decide to hire the lawyer, you will go into a more detailed discussion of your case and ask more specific questions along the way.

Generally speaking, you'll want to have a list of questions in mind to ask during the meeting. Also, you should feel comfortable enough asking questions that relate to the lawyer's expertise, experience, fees, special knowledge, and management of the case.

Below are ten questions to ask your potential lawyer.

1. How long have you practiced law? At a minimum, you'll want to know about the lawyer's expertise and whether the lawyer is a veteran or beginner attorney, for instance. Your legal issue may very well be handled by someone who is fresh out of law school, (or not). It all depends.

2. What type of cases do you generally handle? What percentage of your practice is devoted to (the practice area in question)? You'll also want to know about a lawyer's expertise and how much of the attorney's practice is devoted to topic area your legal issue falls within. For example, if you need help with an adoption case, you may wish to seek a family law lawyer who has worked on, well, adoption cases 3. Who is your typical client? This is an important, but often-overlooked question. For example, if you are an individual with a particular legal problem, but the attorney your meeting with represents only corporations, this may not be the best lawyer for you. Likewise, you may wish to know the financial background of some of the lawyer's clients. This is because there may be different issues a lawyer is used to factoring when working with high net-worth individuals vs. college students.

4. How many cases have you represented that were similar to mine? Now is not the time to act shy. Feel free to ask about the attorney's track record, such as the number of cases won or settled, for example.

5. Other than a law degree, What kind of special training or knowledge do you have that might apply in my situation?

Some cases, like DUI and patent cases, require specialized training and knowledge for effective representation. Be sure to inquire whether your case fits into that category.

of the Northwest

Suburbs ®

8. Are there others ways for solving my legal problem? Go ahead. Ask the professional whether there are any alternatives for solving your legal problem, such as through arbitration or some other out-of-court arrangement. A good attorney will generally inform you if your case can be handled through other less expensive

and time consuming means.

9. How will you let me know what's happening with my case? Communication is key when working with a lawyer. Ask the lawyer how often and under what circumstances you will hear from him or her. You'll want to know how your case is coming along and about other important dates. 10. What is the likely outcome in my case? Generally speaking, it is fair game to ask the attorney whether you have a good chance of winning your case. You are not looking for the "right" answer, just an honest one. For instance, if you're facing an uphill battle in, let's say, a nasty divorce situation, you'll want to know up front from the attorney so you can prepare yourself for what lies ahead.

While the answers to questions you ask your lawyer will vary widely, it is important to keep in mind that nothing should be taken as a guarantee. Instead, these questions should give you general knowledge of a specific lawyer's experience and skill-level, and whether the lawyer is a good fit for you.

6. What are your attorney fees and costs, and how are they billed? Will a portion or all of my case be handled by paralegals or legal assistants? If so, ask about reduced costs. This step is obviously an important one. You'll want to

Suburban WOMAN

know whether you can afford the lawyer's services and how you will be required to pay. This is also the time to ask about payment options and how often, and under what circumstances, you will be billed.

7. What is your approach or philosophy to winning or representing a case? This can be important in two ways. First, if you are seeking an amicable divorce, for example, but the attorney is known to "go for the kill" in divorce cases, the attorney may not be the right one for you. Similarly, if you're looking for an aggressive attorney to handle an upcoming corporate merger, for example, you'll want someone who isn't afraid to push the envelope, so to speak.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Caregivers: The Unsung Heroes By Joanne Parrino Cahill When his 35-year-old wife was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, Vince Yee was overwhelmed, and a whirlwind of questions ran through his mind. Who can I talk to? What can I learn? “Knowledge is strength,” says Yee, who is the father of two young children. He sought out as much help and information as he could to help fight his wife’s illness. “Who can I talk to…to help me help my wife? I wanted to know that I did the best I could for her.” Caregivers can indeed be the unsung heroes in the fight against cancer. Many new responsibilities fall upon their shoulders: they can become decision-makers, advocates, communicators, hands-on care providers, and social supporters. At the same time, some still work at their fulltime jobs with the added pressure of being the primary insurance carriers. “Doctors, researchers, and drug companies get a lot of credit in the fight for the cure, and rightfully so,” says Ellena Muraco, director of OROC. “But caregivers manage all the dayto-day ups and downs. They can make a huge difference in a patient’s ultimate recovery.” Muraco, a 14-year ovarian cancer survivor, also reminds women that early detection is key. Symptoms can include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, trouble eating or feeling full quickly, and urinary symptoms like urgency or frequency. While these symptoms are vague and could be caused by less serious conditions, it is best to have anything unusual checked out by your physician. As for Yee, he credits the world-class medical care in Cleveland, along with family and extended family – what he calls a network of

Vince,Tyler, Lauren and Meghan Yee

“superfriends” – with supporting him and wife Meghan during her treatment and recovery. “Don’t bear all the weight on your shoulders,” advises Yee. “There are so many people and organizations willing to help you. Let them help…Good things will happen!” Yee also gained information and resources from organizations like OROC and The Gathering Place. Susan Marinac, a social worker with The Gathering Place, echoes his advice. “When friends ask, ‘Is there something I can do?’ say yes,” emphasizes Marinac. Marinac leads free weekly support groups for caregivers at the Gathering Place locations in Westlake and Beachwood. The groups run simultaneously with sessions for cancer patients, so that caregivers and patients can drive together. The Gathering Place also offers a wide variety of programs and services, all free, that address the emotional, physical, spiritual, and social needs of people touched by cancer, including one-onone counseling, educational materials, and help with community referrals. “Caregivers need to normalize their stress levels,” says Marinac. “Their stress is real, and they need to take care of themselves as much as the patient.” One thing she encourages caregivers to do is to visit their own doctors, as it is easy to get sick and run down during this stressful time. She also encourages caregivers to “take a cancer vacation” once a week by doing something simple that has nothing to do with caregiving, like getting a manicure or going to lunch with a friend. Now Yee is paying it forward. Megan’s scans and numbers still look great after eight years, and both are OROC volunteers. “I have a reinvigorated purpose in life,” he says of his work with OROC. “It doesn’t feel like a chore at all. I want to help people in the same way so many people helped us.” To honor and remember all who have been touched by ovarian cancer, OROC facilitates the lighting of the Terminal Tower in teal lights on September 1, the beginning of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. OROC will also host a luncheon and fashion show on September 24 for ovarian cancer survivors. For more information about OROC, or to make a donation, visit WWW.OROC.org.

A Caregivers Bill of Rights By Jo Horne, Author of Caregiving: Helping an Aging Loved One

I have the right ….. To take care of myself. This is not an act of selfishness. It will give me the capacity of taking better care of my relative. To seek help from others, even though my relative may object. I recognize the limits of my own endurance and strength. To maintain facets of my own life that do not include the person I care for, just as I would if he or she were healthy. I know that I do everything that I reasonably can for this person, and I have the right to do some things for myself. To get angry, be depressed, and express other difficult feelings occasionally. To reject any attempt by my relative (either conscious or unconscious) to manipulate me through guilt, anger, or depression. To receive consideration, affection, forgiveness and acceptance for what I do for my loved one for as long as I offer these qualities in return. To take pride in what I am accomplishing and to applaud the courage it has sometimes taken to meet the needs of my relative. To protect my individuality and my right to make a life for myself that will sustain me when my relative no longer needs my full-time help. To expect and demand that as new strides are made in finding resources to aid physically and mentally impaired older persons in our country, similar strides will be made toward aiding and supporting caregivers. To_____________ (add your own statement of rights to this list. Read it every day.)
